He moved in rarefied circles, a friend to presidents, vaudeville stars, leading thinkers. But when he was thirty-two years old, in 1900, he gave it all up to pursue his Great Idea: to capture on film the continent’s original inhabitants before the old ways disappeared. Curtis spent the next three decades documenting the stories and rituals of more than eighty North American tribes. It took tremendous perseverance — ten years alone to persuade the Hopi to allow him to observe their Snake Dance ceremony. And the undertaking changed him profoundly, from detached observer to outraged advocate. Curtis would amass more than 40,000 photographs and 10,000 audio recordings, and he is credited with making the first narrative documentary film. In the process, the charming rogue with the grade school education created the most definitive archive of the American Indian. Timothy Egan is an acclaimed writer and veteran chronicler of the West whose interests range wide across the American landscape and American history. He is a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, a popular columnist, and a National Book Award-winning author. His weekly online column for The New York Times, the popular “Opinionator,” is consistently among the most read pieces on the NYT site. Before that, he worked as one of the newspaper’s national correspondents, roaming the West and serving as its Pacific Northwest correspondent. In 2001, Egan was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winning team that wrote the series “How Race Is Lived in America.” Egan is the author of several books, including The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire That Saved America, a New York Times bestseller and winner of the 2009 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award. The Big Burn was also the inspiration for a recent documentary also titled The Big Burn which aired on The American Experience (PBS) in 2014. Egan’s book The Worst Hard Time: The Untold Story of Those Who Survived the Great American Dust Bowl, a work Walter Cronkite called “can’t-put-itdown history,” won the 2006 National Book Award for nonfiction. Egan is featured prominently in Ken Burns’ acclaimed 2012 film, The Dust Bowl. Professor, Northern Arizona University, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Department of Applied Indigenous Studies and Co-director, Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development Monday, 11:45 a.m. – 1:15 p.m. “Indigenous Nation-Building: Creating Strong Partnerships Between Higher Education Institutions and Native Nations” In an age of Indigenous Nation-(Re)Building, higher education institutions and Indigenous nation governments and organizations can create meaningful, effective, and lasting partnerships. In his presentation, Dr. Begay will highlight this effort, particularly focusing on the knowledge and skills that higher education administrators and students need to become aware of and responsive to Indigenous nations, as they look to partner with them to solve shared challenges. Manley A. Begay, Jr. is professor in the Department of Applied Indigenous Studies (AIS), and Department of Politics and International Affairs, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. Professor Begay is also an affiliate faculty member of the W. A. Franke College of Business at Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff (NAU). of nation-building and economic development. At NAU, he has primary responsibility for teaching about Indigenous Nation-Building and developing the Tribal Leadership Initiative. Professor Begay joined the NAU faculty in fall of 2014. Beginning in 1997, he has also been co-director (with Professors Joseph Kalt and Stephen Cornell) of the award-winning Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Gomez Assistant Provost, Dean of International Studies & Senior Fellow in Cuban Studies, University of Miami (Retired) Tuesday, 2:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Dr. Andy S. Gomez is a Senior Advisor with the law and public policy firm of Poblete Tamargo LLP. Prior to joining the firm, he served as Special Assistant for International Affairs at the University of Miami, in Florida. In this role, Dr. Gomez served as the university’s liaison between the international business and the diplomatic communities. He served as Assistant Provost for Planning, Institutional Research, and Assessment from 2005-2012. In this capacity, Dr. Gomez was responsible for the continuous academic improvement of all university-wide programs. He also served on the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities (SACS) Board of Trustees from 2008-2012. At the University of Miami, Dr. Gomez also served as Dean of the School of International Studies, 2001-2004. Dr. Gomez is considered an academic scholar in Cuban studies. He currently serves as a Senior Fellow at the University of Miami’s Institute for Cuban and CubanAmerican Studies. His research agenda focuses on the ideological and psychological reconstruction of human values and attitudes in a post-Castro Cuba. AACRAO’s Screening Debut is being launched at the Phoenix Annual Meeting. We invite you to submit up to three videos, which will run on a continuous loop during breakout session times on Monday and Tuesday. If you are attending the Annual Meeting, there will also be designated time for you to discuss the concept behind your video and explain to colleagues how to develop something similar for their own campus. Apply for a Conner Scholarship, which offers $300 to $500 to defray expenses associated with attending and presenting at an AACRAO meeting. Learn more. Registration Fees To qualify for the member rate, the registrant must be a paid member on an active AACRAO membership roster (institutional, affiliate, corporate, organizational, or individual). Registrants may register at the One Day Only rate once. If attending more than one day, they must register at the applicable rate for the entire meeting. Guest registration is available for spouses, companions, and children of registrants. A discounted guest registration fee is offered to children under 18. Registered guests may visit the Exhibit Hall and attend the Welcome Reception and other special events (excludes professional development sessions). Discounted registration is available to first-time minority attendees from higher education institutions. The completed First-Time Minority Attendee Form must be submitted with the registration form. If registering online, the form may be submitted separately. Early Bird Deadline The deadline for early bird registration is February 19, 2016. Registration forms must be faxed or postmarked by that date to qualify for the early bird rate. Online registrations must be entered by 12 midnight EST on February 19 to qualify. On-Site Registrations On-site registration will be available, although attendees are encouraged to register in advance. Meeting registrations will be accepted on-site at an additional $50 fee. We cannot guarantee that registrations mailed after March 10, 2016 will be processed prior to the meeting. Payment Registrations MUST be accompanied by check, money order, or credit card charging authorization. Forms received without payment will NOT be processed. Funds must be in U.S. dollars. Checks or money orders should be made payable to AACRAO. (For accounting purposes, the AACRAO Federal Tax ID number is 52-2274900.) Confirmations Confirmations will be sent via e-mail to registrants within one week of receipt. If an e-mail address is not provided, or if an e-mail sent to you is returned as undeliverable, you will receive a confirmation via fax or regular mail within 5-7 business days. Tickets & Badges Paid workshops, luncheons, and the International Educators Reception require tickets that will be distributed along with your badge at the Annual Meeting. Name badges are required for admission to all events and the exhibit hall. The National Network of Law School Officers Luncheon is an event for NNLSO members and those interested in Law Schools. This is not an AACRAO event. A ticket is required. All substitutions, cancellations and refunds will follow the AACRAO Policy listed below. Substitutions, Cancellations, and Refunds All changes, substitutions, and cancellations must be made in writing. Substitutions may be made without penalty. Special Opportunity: University of Phoenix Tour We are pleased to offer a walking tour and demonstration of key processes in the Office of Admissions and Records at the University of Phoenix, a high-volume operational entity that handles several hundred thousand student records annually. The tour includes a visit to the John Sperling Center for Educational Innovation; an interactive demonstration in the Classroom without Boundaries; and visits to the Student Advisement Center, Student Resource Center, Counseling Skills Center, Nursing Lab and more. Registration for the tour will be made available on a first-come, first-served basis for the first 50 attendees. Transportation to and from the University of Phoenix will be provided. Attendees will return to the Phoenix Convention Center in time for the closing plenary session. Registration details will be e-mailed to all attendees prior to the meeting.
