This time the organiser has decided to go back to a layout used in previous years of the Baja Portalegre 500, introducing a new SS on the event’s first day and after SSS1. Besides the traditional 5 km of the Prologue which signals the start of the competition, Cars, Bikes, Quads and UTV/Buggy will face a further 85 km on SS2, giving the Baja Portalegre 500’s Day 1 a different and more relevant dimension in comparison to recent editions. As in previous years, the event remains a part of the FIA Cross Country World Cup, signalling the end of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s off-road season, as well as the end of the FPAK and FMP calendars. Therefore, and as usual, the Baja should be decisive for the several national and international titles, a fact that not only underlines the international relevance of the event, but also brings to Portalegre the best international off-road drivers. We are, once more, grateful for the support of our sponsors – BP, Alentejo Tourism Board, Municipality of Portalegre and Municipality of Ponte de Sor – as well as for the collaboration of the Municipalities of Abrantes, Alter do Chão, Crato, Gavião, Monforte and Nisa, and the Community Councils of Arez e Amieira do Tejo, Chança, Comenda, Cunheira, Monte da Pedra e Foros do Arrão, without which the Event would not be possible. We also count on the collaboration of the National Guard (GNR), the Fire Brigade of Portalegre District, as well as on the support of Hertz, Fonte Viva, Ibermedia, SNB, Fencaça, Portuguese Hunters Federation, RTP and Rádio Portalegre (104,5). We also appreciate the support of all the elements of the organisation and we owe a special thanks to the support of the owners who allow the race to cross their lands. This collaboration is the secret of our success and the reason for the longevity of this race. For all these reasons, we hope that you will be able to join us for the 29th Baja Portalegre 500. Carlos Barbosa President of ACP 3 HISTORY Brief History of the Event The Baja of Portalegre was the first cross-country event held in Portugal, in June 1987, based in Portalegre city. In fact, Clube Aventura, headed by José Megre, an ex-Dakar Rally driver, had this event in mind since 1983, but it took him almost four years to materialize the idea, since he had to get the help and authorization from the local authorities. Dr. Miranda Calha, today a member of Parliament and, at that time Minister of Sports, was behind this idea. 100 cars and more than 100 bikes entered the first Baja Portalegre, at that time called Rali Maratona de Portalegre and sponsored by Finicisa. The event ran on a 350 km route long to be done twice with no stops. Heavy rains and mud made the event a remarkable challenge for cars and bikes. The second and third edition, were held on the following two years, where entries and mud conditions doubled. On the memorable fourth edition in 1989, there were 250 cars and 450 bikes but only 10% of the competitors finished! It was amazing, besides the conditions! Since the first year, many international riders, even the best of them, who came from around the world just to join Portalegre, represented bikes. From Serge Bacou, Thierry Charbonnier, Gilles Lalay, Stephane Peterhansel, David Castera, Cyril Esquirol, Richard Sainct, Alain Perez, Thierry Magnaldi, and many others have participated in this event. Only in 1995 and 1996, foreigner riders reached the podium, as it was the case of Richard Sainct and Alain Perez. 4 THE EVENT 1988 The 1st edition of the event under the name Rali Maratona de Portalegre Finicisa, run with 2 laps on 350 km itinerary. 2nd edition with 2 laps on a 400 km itinerary (800 Km Finicisa – Portalegre) 1989 The event ran on a single lap of 500 km, under the name – 500 km Cerveja Sagres Portalegre. 1990 On the bikes, the race changed to one rider per bike. Entries rose to 250 cars and 450 bikes and an identical figure ran on the following three years! 1997 11ª Baja Galp 500 Portalegre – The event gets a new sponsor and, due to heavy rain, it was shorten to 200 Km. The main National TV Network – SIC, started a 5 years strong coverage of this event. 1999 Baja Porta da Ravessa 500 / Portalegre – A new sponsor entered again. The Adega Cooperativa do Redondo, producer of some of the best Alentejo Wines (Porta da Ravessa), became the main sponsor. For the first time this event was ran on two special stages for cars. A 3rd special stage was introduced for cars, to be ran on Sunday morning. The event was candidate of the FIA Cup of Bajas. 1987 2001 2002 As a FIA Baja Cup event, the race re-entered the National Championship, as a “Joker” event. National TV Station RTP was granted the exclusive TV rights of the event. 2003 Porta da Ravessa wine gives way to a new wine: Anta da Serra, from the same company, therefore it became the name of the event. 2004 Colin McRae raced his first race with his new Nissan Pick Up, entered by Nismo. 2005 201 bikes and 133 cars at the start and a great participation from the factory teams. VW with Carlos Sainz (first cross country race), Bruno Saby, Jutta Kleinschmidt and Mark Miller, and Mitsubishi, with Luc Alphand and Hiroshi Masuoka. Under some heavy rain the race between Sainz, Kleinschmidt and Alphand was a great one. The winner was the Mitsubishi of Alphand. 2006 211 bikes and 114 cars at the start. Marc Blazquez dominated the race. Between the bikes, Mario Patrão won and Luis Engeitado was the fastest of the quads. 2007 2008 Portalegre saw for the third time, Miguel Barbosa and Miguel Ramalho claim victory. António Maio wins at the Bikes. 144 Bikes and 90 cars at the start. The new brand Pajero Racing Lancer with Stephane Peterhansel and Jean Paul Cottret won its first race. In the Bikerbikes the local “hero” António Maio won again. 2010 Krysztof Holowczyc (auto) and António Maio (bike) win the Baja. 2011 The celebration of the 25th edition was praised with more than 600 competitors, a tribute to the first cross-country race held in Portugal. 2012 As a FIM Baja World Cup for the first time, António Maio wins the race for the 5th time. Victories for Roberto Borrego (Quads), David Além (UTV), João Guilherme (Buggy) and Miroslav Zapletal / Maciek Marton (Auto). 2013 Holowczyc (Auto), Patrão (Bike), Carita (Quad), Tavares (UTV) and Ferreira are the winners 2014 Ricardo and Manuel Porém (Auto); Mário Patrão (Bike); Luís Engeitado (Quad); João Lopes and Bruno Santos (UTV); Bruno Martins (Buggy) are the winners. 5 PAST WINNERS Year Auto Bike Quad UTV Buggy 1987 Bayona / Costa Marques / Carvalho 1988 Tucha / Castro Lopes / Lopes 1989 Almeida / Almeida João Lopes 1990 Guedes / Choças António Lopes 1991 Almeida / Silva António Lopes 1992 T.Breyner / Baptista António Lopes 1993 T.Breyner / Baptista Carlos Crespo 1994 Vassalo / Caiado Paulo Marques 1995 Garcia / Janela Richard Sainct 1996 Campos / Figueiredo Alain Perez 1997 Godinho / Jesus Miguel Farrajota 1998 Campos / Figueiredo Ruben Faria 1999 Vassalo / Condenso Ruben Faria 2000 Sousa / Silva Luis Serra Paulo Barbosa 2001 Campos / Figueiredo Paulo Gonçalves Mário Reis 2002 Barbosa / Ramalho Luis Serra Vítor Santos 2003 Barbosa / Ramalho Sandro Marcos Jordi Saborit 2004 McRae / Thorner Mário Patrão João Lopes 2005 Alphand / Picard Mário Patrão Rui Fernandes 2006 Blazquez / Mercader Mário Patrão Nelson Caxias 2007 Barbosa / Ramalho António Maio Vitor Santos 2008 Peterhansel / Cottret António Maio Rui Mendes António Val 2009 Campos / Baptista Mário Patrão Humberto Pinto Jorge Monteiro 2010 Holowczyc / Fortin António Maio Roberto Borrego Esteves / Amado Val / Carvalho 2011 Campos / Baptista António Maio Roberto Borrego Jorge Monteiro Porêlo / Porêlo 2012 Zapletal / Marton António Maio Roberto Borrego David Além J. Reality lies here, waiting to be unveiled, in the endless plains and mountains, in the water that entertains and cures, in the great open spaces of nature or in those built by man both for ancient wars and for peace. Authenticity lies here, in the nobility that our ancestors lent to the stones of the dolmens and menhirs, to the armorial bearing of the manor houses and to the unique flavours generated in secret in the ancient convents and wineries. The truth also lies here, in the festival and the fair, in the music, the dancing and in the local art, where tradition is maintained. The city of Portalegre, with about 16000 inhabitants, grew up mainly from the 16th century on, moment when Portalegre became town and bishopric. Also the economic progress, result of the agriculture, trade and industry, took some noble and bourgeois families to the new town, where they built houses with some charm and greatness. The places to visit are open every day, except Mondays; the schedules are similar (9h30 -12h30 /14h – 18h). DISCOVER PONTE DE SOR Ponte de Sor is a municipality in Portalegre District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 16,722 in an area of 839.71 km². The city's name is derived from the first roman bridge, which was part of the 3rd military road connecting Lisbon to Merida. An area of upheaval in between borders during the reconquest, Ponte de Sor, which initially belonged to the Templars, was taken back by the Order of St. Benedict. Its first "Foral Charter" was bestowed upon it by the Diocese of Évora in 1161, and later ratified by D. Manuel. Once the roman bridge was gone, King João VI had the bridge that stands today built in 1822 PLACES WHERE TO EAT PORTALEGRE O Tarro - +351 925 700 721 Grelhados do Bonfim - +351 245 202 585 A Gruta – +351 245 201 402 Solar do Forcado – +351 245 330 866 Tomba Lobos - +351 245 906 111 Escondidinho – +351 245 202 728 Caldeirão de Sabores - +351 966 795 751 Álvaro (Urra) - + 351 245 382 283 Convívio Pizza & Grill - +351 245 399 999 Tomba Lobos - +351 245 906 111 PONTE DE SOR O Lusitano - +351 936 223 597 Olivença - +351 242 206 201 O Padeiro - + 351 242 206 957 O Barril - +351 912 740 384 Quadrifonia - +351 242 203 283 FOROS DO MOCHO Retiro do Mocho - +351 242 904 271 MONTARGIL A Tropical - +351 242 904 606 CRATO Prior do Crato - +351 245 990 197 A Adega - +351 968 087 480 FOROS DO ARRÃO O Vicente - +351 242 965 169 FLOR DA ROSA O Recanto - + 351 245 996 112 ALTER DO CHÃO Páteo Real - +351 245 612 301 GAFETE O Lagarteiro - +351 245 790 113 GAVIÃO Casa Marinheiro - +351 241 632 195 NISA Flor do Alentejo - +351 245 429 424 22 23
