INTRODUCTION
Dear friends,
Just one year away from celebrating its 30th anniversary, the 29th edition of the
charismatic Baja Portalegre 500 is back with some novelties, underlining the
Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) commitment to continuously give the Baja
more and more reasons to increase spectators’ interest so that, year after year,
the sporting and organisational level of this event is reinforced as a world wide
reference in off-road events.
This time the organiser has decided to go back to a layout used in previous years of the Baja
Portalegre 500, introducing a new SS on the event’s first day and after SSS1. Besides the traditional 5
km of the Prologue which signals the start of the competition, Cars, Bikes, Quads and UTV/Buggy will
face a further 85 km on SS2, giving the Baja Portalegre 500’s Day 1 a different and more relevant
dimension in comparison to recent editions.
As in previous years, the event remains a part of the FIA Cross Country World Cup, signalling the end
of the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile’s off-road season, as well as the end of the FPAK and
FMP calendars. Therefore, and as usual, the Baja should be decisive for the several national and
international titles, a fact that
not only underlines the international relevance of the event, but also
brings to Portalegre the best international off-road drivers.
We are, once more, grateful for the support of our sponsors – BP, Alentejo Tourism Board,
Municipality of Portalegre and Municipality of Ponte de Sor – as well as for the collaboration of the
Municipalities of Abrantes, Alter do Chão, Crato, Gavião, Monforte and Nisa, and the Community
Councils of Arez e Amieira do Tejo, Chança, Comenda, Cunheira, Monte da Pedra e Foros do Arrão,
without which the Event would not be possible.
We also count on the collaboration of the National Guard (GNR), the Fire Brigade of Portalegre
District, as well as on the support of Hertz, Fonte Viva, Ibermedia, SNB, Fencaça, Portuguese Hunters
Federation, RTP and Rádio Portalegre (104,5).
We also appreciate the support of all the elements of the organisation and we owe a special thanks
to the support of the owners who allow the race to cross their lands. This collaboration is the secret of
our success and the reason for the longevity of this race.
For all these reasons, we hope that you will be able to join us for the 29th Baja Portalegre 500.
Carlos Barbosa
President of ACP

HISTORY
Brief History of the Event
The Baja of Portalegre was the first cross-country event held in Portugal, in June 1987, based in Portalegre
city.
In fact, Clube Aventura, headed by José Megre, an ex-Dakar Rally driver, had this event in mind since
1983, but it took him almost four years to materialize the idea, since he had to get the help and
authorization from the local authorities. Dr. Miranda Calha, today a member of Parliament and, at that
time Minister of Sports, was behind this idea.
100 cars and more than 100 bikes entered the first Baja Portalegre, at that time called Rali Maratona de
Portalegre and sponsored by Finicisa.
The event ran on a 350 km route long to be done twice with no stops. Heavy rains and mud made the
event a remarkable challenge for cars and bikes.
The second and third edition, were held on the following two years, where entries and mud conditions
doubled. On the memorable fourth edition in 1989, there were 250 cars and 450 bikes but only 10% of
the competitors finished! It was amazing, besides the conditions!
Since the first year, many international riders, even the best of them, who came from around the world
just to join Portalegre, represented bikes. From Serge Bacou, Thierry Charbonnier, Gilles Lalay, Stephane
Peterhansel, David Castera, Cyril Esquirol, Richard Sainct, Alain Perez, Thierry Magnaldi, and many others
have participated in this event.
Only in 1995 and 1996, foreigner riders reached the podium, as it was the case of Richard Sainct and Alain
Perez.

DISCOVER PORTALEGRE
The Northern Alentejo - Portalegre - is almost a mythic region, a region where time is time. Reality lies
here, waiting to be unveiled, in the endless plains and mountains, in the water that entertains and cures,
in the great open spaces of nature or in those built by man both for ancient wars and for peace.
Authenticity lies here, in the nobility that our ancestors lent to the stones of the dolmens and menhirs, to
the armorial bearing of the manor houses and to the unique flavours generated in secret in the ancient
convents and wineries. The truth also lies here, in the festival and the fair, in the music, the dancing and
in the local art, where tradition is maintained.
The city of Portalegre, with about 16000 inhabitants, grew up mainly from the 16th century on, moment
when Portalegre became town and bishopric. Also the economic progress, result of the agriculture, trade
and industry, took some noble and bourgeois families to the new town, where they built houses with
some charm and greatness.
The places to visit are open every day, except Mondays; the schedules are similar (9h30 -12h30 /14h –
18h).
DISCOVER PONTE DE SOR
Ponte de Sor is a municipality in Portalegre District in Portugal. The population in 2011 was 16,722 in an
area of 839.71 km².
The city's name is derived from the first roman bridge, which was part of the 3rd military road connecting
Lisbon to Merida. An area of upheaval in between borders during the reconquest, Ponte de Sor, which
initially belonged to the Templars, was taken back by the Order of St. Benedict. Its first "Foral Charter"
was bestowed upon it by the Diocese of Évora in 1161, and later ratified by D. Manuel. Once the roman
bridge was gone, King João VI had the bridge that stands today built in 1822
