Inclusion through Art
Youth PROGRAMME
The YOUTH programme is the EU’s mobility and non-formal education programme targeting young people
aged between 15 and 25 years.
The Programme is open to youth in 31 European countries and other partner countries. The YOUTH programme offers
possibilities to young people from Eastern and Western Europe for joined activities in the form of:
Action 1: youth exchanges
Youth groups experience other cultures by multinational youth meetings.
Action 2: European Voluntary Service
EVS allows young people to experience Europe while making a difference by volunteering in one of the many placements
across Europe
Action 5: Support activities
This sector provides support and assistance for youth workers and youth leaders to develop projects that further explore
the ideals of the YOUTH Programme. There are National Agencies for the YOUTH programme established in all
31 Programme Countries. The Agencies assist with the promotion and implementation of the Programme at national level.
The YOUTH programme also supports international co-operation activities with other Partner Countries,
i.a. the Eastern Europe and the Caucasus (former CIS - Commonwealth of Independent States).

Editorial
The main idea for the creation of this catalogue was to introduce to you all the participants involved in YouthNET CIS
project „Inclusion through art”, which took place in Wrocław in May 2006. We find it particularly important to gather the
information about the organizations promoting art as a tool of inclusion from Wrocław, European Union and Eastern Europe.
For more than 6 years, since the very beginning of Semper Avanti’s work in Wrocław, inclusion was an extremely important aim
for us. Wrocław, being one of the fastest developing cities in Poland, still has many social problems to cope with. We are glad
that the seminar took place here, in the city with the great potential of young, talented people, full of festivals and cultural events.
On the final event of the seminar - the International Fair “Inclusion Through Art”, we gathered the most active young local
groups, institutions and organizations and mixed them with the leaders from 17 Europeans countries. With the great support
from the local Health andCulture Departments we organized a big public event for youth and NGOs.
We would like to express our gratitude to everybody for coming there. It was a very unique experience to see so many different
groups of people with various backgrounds working together and sharing their artistic methods. There was enthusiastic youth who
views juggling, breakdancing or playing footbag as the way to spend its free time. There were great art therapists so devoted
to working with young people and bringing inspiration for creating something beautiful. We witnessed amazing examples of
talent and passion for drawing from the disabled girls of Ostoja.
Nowadays the term “inclusion” is widely used especially by NGOs. However, it would not be an easy task to explain the meaning
of this term. The word “art” is also often used in our everyday life. If we try to explain the concept of art, it would
probably take us even longer. Instead of compicated explanations we prefer to illustrate what is inclusion through art.
We hope that this catalogue will provide you with inspiring examples and useful contacts of organizations ready
for future cooperation. Good luck in your work!

International Public Fair “Inclusion through Art”
22-28 May 2006
Wrocław, Poland
Organized by “Interkulturelles Zentrum”, Vienna and “Semper Avanti”, Wrocław
Seminar aimed at promoting international youth work as an extra tool for inclusion of young people into society. The seminar
focused on using artistic methods with the purpose of reaching youth on the edge of society. The results of the seminar were
quite fruitful. The participants exchanged methods and best practices, came up with ideas, and initiated long term cooperation.
The International Fair “Inclusion Through Art” was a public open air event in the
centre of Wroclaw, where 30 organisations participating in the seminar and
20 local organisations presented their methods of work to the local
youth and to each other.
One of the greatest outcomes of the project was the increase of the knowledge of
realities and cultural understanding between Eastern and Western European citizens.
The participants of the seminar were youth workers and youth leaders
of organisations from Bulgaria, Great Britain, Portugal, Austria, Sweden,
the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, France, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia
who are using artistic methods in their work with young people in
order to include them into society.
INTERNATIONAL OPEN FAIR “Inclusion Through Art”, Wrocław, 27th of May 2006
The International Open Fair “Inclusion Through Art” was a public open air event held in the centre of Wrocław,
where 30 organisations from the international contact making seminar and local Polish organisations presented actively
their methods of work to the local youth and to each other. International Open Fair was also called Youth Info Day as a final
event within youthNET CIS project.
Having started in the afternoon, the event lasted for four hours. Young active Europeans were leading various kinds of artistic
workshops in the specially equipped space with tents, stands and a stage. There local youth had an opportunity to play drums,
juggle, play footbag, draw with palette-knife as well as to make drawings from thread and inch, dance breakdance and folk
dances, see performances and learn some circus elements. Besides, young people could learn about Youth Programme and
EVS opportunities, SLOT Art Festival, Krzyżowa Foundation, European information network EURODESK, and of course,
about youthNET CIS.
Youth Info Day was an essential part of youthNET CIS seminars since there is a need to introduce the idea of our project
and European cooperation to the local partners, authorities and community.
The fair became a broad platform for:
-starting future cooperation
-providing an opportunity to exchange artistic methods
of inclusive youth work
-the promotion of programmes which integrate EU and Eastern Europe

original background that they generally ignore as a whole and the French
schooling/professional environments very often reject them. With them we face numerous
issues concerning inclusion, intercultural dialogue and participation. Therefore, our main goal
is to lead these minority young people to an appropriate integration in their daily environment
& community, through their learning of the French language, of their own culture, the practice
of dialogue and the use of conflict management & crisis prevention tools. For this, we provide
them with various services on a short-term, middle-term and long-term basis: daily meals,
medical, social & legal support.
Obviously this inclusion process is also based on intercultural learning through professional
training courses (i.e computers, language courses), cultural & leisure activities
(i.e arts, music), indoor & outdoor games or sports (i.e football).

Country, city: Italy, Torino
Professional info: I was born many years ago in Torino, after the Roman Empire ending
anyway. I play the piano and like to sing and act, not very much to dance, except tango. I love
to dance only with Agnieszka. I love sports such as skiing, swimming, sailing and especially
cycling. I tend to live my life with curiosity as life is really to short to get all interesting activity
on the Earth. I love bitter chocolate, sweet girls smiling with eyes, passionate people with
sense of humor. I love silence of nature in high mountains on in the middle of the sea.
I hate smoke and smoky places, uneducated rude and pointy persons, hot and wet weather
to see. I hate to have someone suffering near me and know I can't do anything to make him
or her smile.

Interkulrturelles Zentrum
Interkulturelles Zentrum promotes the development of relations between people of different cultural backgrounds and
trains people to carry out practical intercultural work (e.g. multipliers in youth work, educators). Beyond this,
the Center defines itself as a mediator between political decision makers and culturally active institutions
(e.g. youth organisations, basis initiatives) with the aim to generate high-quality opportunities, transnational meetings
and cooperations.
In particular, Interkulturelles Zentrum attempts to improve the social conditions for intercultural youth and school projects
with the help of target-orientated information and public relations work. It provides training and continuing education events
that serve to develop intercultural competence and support the generation of international networks of organizers
and educators. Exemplary projects that encourage peoples to meet and continuing education are intended to
boost innovation and enhance the quality of existing cooperation projects.
Interkulturelles Zentrum is an independent non-profit association directed by an honorary Managing Committee of experts
and a full-time management. A Board of trustees comprising scientists, artists and notables carries part of the workload.
The activities of Interkulturelles Zentrum are evaluated on a regular basis. This is done by collecting target-group-specific
feedback pertaining to the quality of the training and services offered.
Interkulturelles Zentrum was awarded the World Aware Award for Global Education 2000 and 2005 by the Council of Europe.
