At Leiden Bio Science Park 93 companies and organisations, together
with Leiden University and the LUMC are active in the life sciences R&D.
Here they develop innovative drugs, vaccines, diagnostics and platform
technologies.
They work, for instance, on solutions for major health issues like
infections, HIV, arthritis, brain diseases, various types of cancers, and
orphan diseases like Cystic Fybrosis and Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Leiden Bio Science Park has seen companies
start from academic spin-off phase and grow
to SME´s or to stock market listed companies,
whereas others have been taken over by large
pharmaceutical companies.
The more than 30 years history
of ­Leiden Bio Science Park has
fuelled the next wave of young and
fast growing companies like ProQR
Therapeutics, ISA Pharmaceuticals,
2-BBB, and DCPrime.
For example, the successful company
Prosensa that grew up on Leiden, was
acquired by BioMarin in 2015. And the
Janssen family of companies of Johnson &
Johnson, includes former start-up Crucell, and
Centocor and Mentor.
And, the park attracted numerous
innovative service providers such as
Pluriomics (stem cell technology), Mimetas
(organ-on-a-chip), OcellO (3D drug discovery
screening services), BaseClear (genomics) and
many others.
World class clinical trial facilities are
available at the Centre for Human Drug
Research (early clinical evaluation of novel
therapeutics).
Together, the companies and institutions at
Leiden Bio Science Park are well prepared
as the leading cluster for innovative therapy
development in Europe.

Modern therapy development is a complex
multidisciplinary endeavour requiring extensive interplay between academia, doctors,

stimulates this interaction.

Leiden University (that celebrates its 440th anniversary in 2015) is an international research

Recent drug
developments

2-BBB Medicines
BioMarin
2-BBB’s lead product 2B3-101 completed
a Phase I/IIa trial treating patients with
various forms of cancer. The product
2B3-201 (several CNS indications) is
finishing a Phase I clinical trial in healthy
volunteers and MS patients.
In June 2015, BioMarin submitted the
New Drug Application at the FDA for
drisapersen, the lead candidate for
the treatment of Duchenne Muscular
Dystrophy, developed by Prosensa. The
European Medicines Agency (EMA)
validated drisapersen’s Marketing
Authorization Application, which means
that the submission is complete and the
EMA’s standard review process will start.

ISA Pharmaceuticals

ProQR Therapeutics
In June 2015, the DARWIN 1 and
DARWIN 2 studies of Galapagos both met
their primary endpoint at 12 weeks of
treatment with the selective JAK1 inhibitor
filgotinib. Patients in both studies showed
improvements in signs and symptoms of
active rheumatoid arthritis.
Two Phase II clinical trials of ISA
Pharmaceuticals´s lead compound
ISA101 are currently ongoing in cervical
cancer and anal intraepithelial neoplasia.
In addition, clinical trials with ISA´s first
SLPR-AMPLIVANTR conjugates (ISA201
program) have been initiated in February
2015.
In July 2014 after a long trajectory,
Pharming celebrated the FDA approval
of Ruconest R for the treatment of acute
attacks of angioedema in patients with
Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) in the US,
and initiated a Phase II clinical trial to
investigate Ruconest R for the prophylaxis
of HAE.
ProQR Therapeutics successfully raised
funds of $102 million (€79.3 million) at
NASDAQ, $3 million from Cystic Fibrosis
Foundation Therapeutics, and €42 million
from institutional investors. The company
is preparing a first clinical trial for its
lead candidate, QR-010, an RNA-based
therapy for Cystic Fibrosis.
Results of the Phase II study with
filgotinib) in Crohn’s disease will be
available in Q4 2015, and the cystic
fibrosis program entered the clinic.

operations used in the industry will be

We offer all sorts of training programs: 1-day
GMP introductions, SOP writing to complete
courses on cleaning validation, upstream &
downstream processing, process validations,
aseptic filling of vials, etc.
The facility also offers tailor-made courses, e.g.
to train how to use new equipment, train-thetrainer, training for support personnel, and
much more.

The Leiden Bio Science Park foundation invests in various activities
revolving around human capital. For example, the ‘LBSP HRM network’
and its bi-annual meetings allow local human resource professionals to

Red Career
Together with the OV BSP, the Red Career
project was started. This project will deliver a
series of 3 minute videos that illustrate the
broad range of jobs or careers at Leiden Bio
Science Park.
In particular, jobs will be selected where finding
the right professional can be difficult. The first
Red career ‘episode’ was produced to cover
the work of biochemistry technicians and was
filmed at Apotex Nederland.

Members of the Leiden Bio Science Park community celebrated several
anniversaries, won prizes, had their new facilities opened, or attracted
investments:
1. Avery Dennison officially opened their new sustainable European HQ
at the Oegstgeest area of the park.
2. The first investment of the regional
development agency Innovation
Quarter went to Leiden based
BabyBloom Healthcare, that develops ergonomic incubators.

4. Charles River Laboratories acquired

5. Condi food won the Herman

its FSHD drug development program. FSHD is a rare, hereditary form of

Leiden University and €500,000 euro
to further develop the technique that can determine the gender of chicken

Housing for young and maturing
