the parent trap - Pushkin Children`s Books
Just as we all are, children are fascinated by stories. From the
earliest age, we love to hear about monsters and heroes, romance
and death, disaster and rescue, from every place and time.
In 2013, we created Pushkin Children’s Books to share these tales
from different languages and cultures with younger readers, and
to open the door to the wide, colourful worlds these stories offer.
From picture books and adventure stories to fairytales and classics,
and from fifty-year-old bestsellers to current huge successes
abroad, the books on the Pushkin Children’s list reflect the very
best stories from around the world, for our most discerning
readers of all: children.
THE LETTER FOR THE KING
TONKE DRAGT, ILLUSTRATED BY THE AUTHOR
A Sunday Times, Times and Metro Book of the Year—now in paperback!
The fate of a kingdom depends on just
one person…
tonke dragt was (b. Indonesia, 1930).
When she was 12, she was imprisoned in a
Japanese camp during the war, where she
wrote her first book using begged and
borrowed paper. After the war, her family
moved to the Netherlands, where she
became an art teacher. In 1962 she pub
lished her most famous story, The Letter
for the King, which won the Children’s Book
of the Year Award and has been translated
into 16 languages. Its sequel, The Secrets
of the Wild Wood, will be published by
Pushkin Children’s Books in 2015. Dragt
was awarded the State Prize for Youth
Literature in 1976 and knighted in 2001.
When sixteen-year-old Tiuri answers a
desperate call for help, he finds himself on
a perilous mission that could cost him his
life. He must deliver a secret letter to the
King who lives across the Great Mountains
—a letter upon which the future of the
entire realm depends. It means abandoning his home, breaking
all the rules and leaving everything behind
—even the knighthood that he has dreamed
of for so long.
He must trust no one.
He must keep his true identity secret.
Above all, he must never reveal what
is in the letter.

If I open this door, he thought, I’ll have broken the
rules. And then the king will not knight me tomorrow.
Tiuri turned the key, opened the door a crack and
peered out into the night. A man stood outside the door,
dressed in a monk’s habit, with the hood pulled down
over his eyes. Tiuri could not see his face, as it was too
dark. He opened the door a little wider and waited in
silence for the man to speak. “Thank you!” whispered
the stranger. Tiuri did not reply. The stranger waited
for a moment and then said, still in a whisper, “I need
your help. It’s a matter of life and death! Will you
help me? Please.”

THE POINTLESS LEOPARD
COLAS GUTMAN, ILLUSTRATED BY DELPHINE PERRET
A walk in the woods turns into a funny, philosophical and charming adventure
colas gutman’s parents were writers,
and for a long time he was convinced that
it was the worst profession in the world ...
Until one day the joy of writing grabbed
him. And it hasn’t let him go since.
He is still a big kid, and writes his books
in exactly the same way he used to do his
homework when he was younger—lying
on his bed, using a comic book as his desk.
In this witty tale of insistent parents and
talking animals, a child questions his
purpose.
In the country, there’s nothing to do,
except: admire. It’s the same as being
bored, but with your eyes wide open.
The hilarious story of grumpy city-child
Leonard, forced to go for country walks
with his greenery-loving mum and dad, is
a wonderful reminder of what use we may
be to the world. What do we know? What
can we do? And is any of it of real value?
The Pointless Leopard is a charming tale
for all, about the parts we play
in the lives of others.
An author and illustrator, delphine perret
has already published a dozen children’s
books of her own, as well as illustrating
many others.
Translated by Stephanie Seegmuller.
‘Lively, idiomatic and always
entertaining ... a decidedly
offbeat little book’

POCKETY
FLORENCE SEYVOS, ILLUSTRATED BY CLAUDE PONTI
A very moving journey through grief: Pockety has things to teach you
In this simple story about grief, and the
continuation of life, a tortoise mourns her
lost friend, learns to live alone, and finds
ways of being happy again. Moving, funny,
and insightful, Pockety captures the
feelings of losing someone we love—
from denial and anger to eventual peace
—through the world of a young tortoise.
It speaks clearly to something we all
experience: what we must pay for having
love in our lives, and how we may grow
around those losses. Pockety is
a tale for everyone, young
and old, and for anyone
who has ever loved.
florence seyvos grew up in Northern
France. At 20 she won first prize in a short
story competition, then went on to

book in 1985. Since then, he has taken us
into a poetic world full of humour with his
many illustrations. In 2006 he received the

THE PILOT AND THE LITTLE PRINCE
PETER SÍS
The life story of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, author of The Little Prince
Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was born in
France in 1900, when aeroplanes were just
being invented. He always dreamt of flying,
and when he became a pilot as a young
man, his adventures truly began. He was
one of the first pilots to deliver mail by
plane and, along with his fellow pilots,
helped to create new routes to faraway
places. Antoine flew over mountains and
deserts, battled winds and storms, and
even tried to break aviation records. He
also crashed a number of times. From his
plane he reflected on life on the earth and
in the skies, and this inspired him to write
about his experiences.
Peter Sís’s remarkable, beautifully
illustrated biography celebrates the author
of The Little Prince, one of the world’s most
beloved books.

THE PARENT TRAP
ERICH KÄSTNER , ILLUSTRATED BY WALTER TRIER
The book behind the world-famous film – in a new translation by Anthea Bell
It’s the oddest of all odd things, when two
girls who have never met before suddenly
come face-to-face at summer camp—and
discover that they ’re the spitting image of
each other. Louise is from Vienna and has
long, curly locks; Lottie is from Munich and
wears her hair in two severe plaits—but
that’s truly the only difference between
them. Louise and Lottie decide to discover
the secret behind their similarity: when the
holiday is over, Louise returns to Munich as
Lottie, and Lottie to Vienna as Louise ...
The Parent Trap was first published in
1949 as Das doppelte Lottchen, and has
been adapted twice into highly successful
Hollywood films.
erich kästner (1899–1974) is perhaps
best known to English-speaking readers
as the author of Emil and the Detectives.
After the end of the First World War,
he studied History, Philosophy, German
and Drama in Leipzig, and soon became
a prolific and acclaimed writer, poet and
journalist—but when the Nazis took power
in Germany, he was expelled from the
writers’ guild and his books were burnt.
Kästner is considered to be one of the
foremost German satirists of his time and
one of the greatest children’s writers of
all time.

THE FLYING CLASSROOM
ERICH KÄSTNER , ILLUSTRATED BY WALTER TRIER
A delightful story about growing up, set in a 1930s boarding school
Five boys are preparing for their school
Christmas play: conscientious Martin, too
poor to pay for his train fare home at the
end of term; Johnny, whose parents have
left him and who’ll have to stay at school
over the holidays; Matthew, strong,
thick-skinned and good-natured, looking
forward to the punching ball he’s been
promised for Christmas; sensitive and
fearful Uli; and intelligent, complicated
Sebastian, who thinks that Christmas is
overrated but is happy to play along. Meanwhile, a rival boys’ school is threatening
their peace, and their housemaster’s
mysterious falling-out with an old friend,
who lives in a (non-smoking) railway
carriage, demands to be explained and
rectified.
Kästner considered The Flying Classroom
to be his best children’s book.

Looking forward to 2015…
The end of 2015 will see the long-awaited sequel
to The Letter for the King published—The Secrets of

The Whale That Fell in Love with a Submarine; and
much more ... !
