Namita Devidayal
The sensational follow up from the bestselling author of The Music Room
Mummyji, the matriarch of a prosperous mithai business family, lies comatose in a Mumbai hospital.
Manipulative, determined and seemingly invincible, Mummyji has held together (and mastered) her
family through bribes of money, endless food and adoration. Surrounding her are her four children:
the weak and ineffectual Papaji who is desperately in need of cash; Samir, the dynamic head of the
business with an ugly marriage and a demanding mistress; Suman, the spoilt beauty of the family
who is determined to get her hands on Mummyji’s best jewels; and Nina, Suman's unlucky sister,
who has always lived in her shadow. Each one of them wants Mummyji to die. Worldly, astute
and utterly riveting, Aftertaste bares open Indian family politics like no other novel. It is another
magnificent achievement from the acclaimed writer, Namita Devidayal.
Namita Devidayal is a journalist based in Mumbai. Her first book, The Music Room, was a winner of
the Vodafone Crossword Popular Book Award 2007 and named an Outlook book of the year.

Rahul Mehta
An accomplished collection of stories about gay Indian men—the fiction debut of
the year
'Spare, elegant, brave.' Moni Mohsin
"Last week during one of our marathon telephone conversations my mother asked me which one
of us, me or Frank, was the woman in our relationship. ‘Neither of us, obviously,’ I said. ‘That’s what
makes us gay.’ ‘Very funny,’ my mom said. ‘Someone on Oprah said that often gay couples have
one person who plays the man and the other who plays the woman. So I was wondering which
you were.’ ‘Frank and I don’t believe in hetero-normative gender roles,’ I told her. I knew my mom
didn’t know what ‘hetero-normative’ meant, so I figured she’d drop it. ‘So who does the cooking and
cleaning?’ she asked. I could have truthfully answered ‘neither of us.’ Instead I asked, ‘Is that what
you think womanhood is, Mom, cooking and cleaning?’"
Rahul Mehta’s stories are inhabited by young, gay Indian men on the wrong side of the American
dream: adrift in the world, in complicated relationships, and with uncertain futures. Here are lovers
who go to a nightclub deciding to cheat on each other; a couple slowly breaking up while they
holiday; a young man who can’t stop himself from burning up all his money; another who reluctantly
prepares his grandmother for her US citizenship test. In a voice that’s bare and wry, edgy and tender,
Rahul Mehta writes of desire and family ties with rare candor. This is an outstanding debut.
Rahul Mehta was born and raised in West Virginia, USA. He is currently a lecturer in English at
Alfred University.

The Ganesh Scriptures
ALICE Albinia
From the author of Empires of the Indus, an extraordinary novel that weaves
together ancient scriptures, genetic testing, poetic creation and a clutch of
overlapping love stories
Leela—aloof, taciturn, haunted—is moving back to Delhi from New York. She knows her return will
unlock many secrets. Twenty-five years ago, her sister Meera was seduced by Vyasa. Now an eminent
Sanskrit scholar, he is preparing for their son's marriage to the daughter of his Hindutva nemesis. At
the wedding, thanks to the machinations of Vyasa, Leela will be made to face her past. But she is not
the only one with things to hide. Vyasa, too, has his ghosts. His son, meanwhile, is having an affair
with the brother of his bride.
Presiding over the drama—indeed, inventing it—is Ganesh, the elephant-headed scribe of
the Mahabharata, who, having fallen out with its author Ved Vyasa, has decided to write his own
version.
Playful, ambitious and supremely entertaining, The Ganesh Scripture draws on themes from the
great Indian epic to weave a tale of contemporary Delhi that crosses religious and social boundaries.
With this extraordinary follow up to Empires of the Indus, Alice Albinia has proved herself to be one
of the most talented young writers of her generation.
Alice Albinia’s first book, Empires of the Indus, won a Royal Society of Literature / Jerwood Foundation
Special Prize for non-fiction work in progress, a Somerset Maugham Award and the Dolman Travel
Prize. She lives in UK.

Maggi Lidchi Grassi
The Great Golden
Sacrifice of the
Mahabharata
‘Of all the retellings of the Mahabharata…this one
is the most committed, the most passionate and
the most moving.’ Indian Review of Books
‘A never-to-be-forgotten work.’ The Independent
‘Told with passion, understanding and imagination,
a story that deserves to be read.’ Times of India
A stunningly lyrical work, The Great Golden Sacrifice
of the Mahabharata reinterprets Vyasa’s epic from
Arjuna’s point of view. As Arjuna relives the battle
of Kurukshetra, he senses a profound change
coming upon himself. He begins to understand
the true meaning of surrender and sacrifice. The
book comprises three parts, narrated principally
by Arjuna. Part I takes us through the childhood
and youth of the Pandavas and Kauravas, the game
of dice, the Pandavas’ forest exile, and ends with
the armies arrayed for battle at Kurukshetra. Part
II recounts the battle itself, and the teachings of
the Bhagvad Gita. Part III presents a moving and
brilliantly original take on the Mahabharata as
Lidchi-Grassi gives a voice to the forgotten victims
of every war—the ordinary citizens who must
pick themselves up and resume the business of
life. Vastly ambitious in scope and epic in scale,
The Great Golden Sacrifice of the Mahabharata is an
astonishing read.
Maggi Lidchi-Grassi is a writer and homeopath, and
has lived at the Aurobindo Ashram at Pondicherry
since 1959.

Kalila and Dimna
Once upon a time, a powerful young king called
Dabschelim ruled over India. One day, he came
upon a hidden treasure from a long-dead king. With
it was a letter addressed to him. How had the letter
come to be there? And what did it mean? To solve
the mystery, Dabschelim summoned the wisest man
in his kingdom, Dr Bidpai, to his side. And so began
the tales of Kalila and Dimna…
Of all the storytelling collections from India, it
is the animal fables found in the The Pancatantra
that have travelled the furthest. Ramsay Wood’s
delightful retelling of The Pancatantra not only
modernizes the fables, but uses all the main
versions from the Sanskrit to the Persian and
Arabic, and even the early English. Written with
great colour, style and panache, and beautifully
illustrated, it makes the perfect introduction to a
global Indian classic.

Palpasa Café
‘A clever and original novel set amid the death
and fear of the Maoist guerrilla war in Nepal.’
Independent (Picked in ten great books to come
out of the subcontinent)
‘A powerful anti-war novel that will be read and
talked about for years.’ Nepali Times
A journalist sits in a café waiting for his subject—
an artist called Drishya about whom he wants to
write a novel. But Drishya doesn’t come. For that
morning he has been visited by Maoists at his
home and abducted by them. So begins Palpasa
Café, the extraordinary novel by Nepali journalist
Narayan Wagle, which has become a sensation in
the country. Starting with the murders of the royal
family, it tells the troubled story of contemporary
Nepal through the eyes of a romantic artist who
falls in love, wanders the war-struck countryside
and dreams of creating a café named after his
beloved which serves the best coffee in the country.
Playful, moving and melancholic, fusing the
boundaries between fiction and nonfiction, Palpasa
Café presents a rare picture of Nepal at war.
Narayan Wagle was the editor of Kantipur Daily,
Nepal’s largest circulating newspaper. Palpasa Café
was published in 2005 and became a bestseller,
winning the Madan Puraskar, Nepal’s most
prestigious literary prize. It was translated into

HOLMES OF THE RAJ

'The reader gets infected by his high spirits.’
The Hindu
It is 1888. As Central Asia reels under the intrigues
of the Great Game, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson
sail to India on a secret mission in the service of
Empire. The accountant of a Hindu monastery
has been brutally murdered, and the head priest
is the prime suspect. But as both detective and
doctor soon discover, their Indian autumn has
only just begun. They are plunged into a series
of adventures that take them from Madras and
Pondicherry to the princely courts of Hyderabad,
the uncharted jungles of the Central Provinces,
pine-scented Nainital, and the bustling metropolis
of Calcutta. Even as Holmes unravels sinister plots,
Watson busies himself helping Ronald Ross track
the malaria parasite and advising a schoolboy
called Dhyan Chand on the finer points of hockey.
Sprightly, colourful and remarkably faithful to
Conan Doyle, this is an unforgettable collection.

The Betelnut Killers
Chimanbhai Shah is the content, mild-mannered
owner of a grocery shop in Portland, Oregon. But
when Supriya, the sexy siren, draws his customers
away to her slick new store, it leads to a sudden
downturn in his business. In desperation, the Shahs
turn to Osmanbhai, a Mumbai supari killer, to help
them get rid of their competition. Literally.
The Betelnut Killers is a farcical black comedy
about an NRI Gujarati family where Sopranos meets
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron; ambition leads to crime;
passion overwhelms reason; and trial transforms
into tragedy. Gripping and absurd in turns, it is
soon to be made into a major Bollywood film.

From Peary Chand Mitter’s Alaler Gharer Dulal (1857) to Samaresh Basu’s Mahaklaer Rather Ghora
(1977), Random House India presents the greatest Bengali novels in their definitive translation.
Many of these books will be translated into English for the first time. Random House India will
publish two books a year, starting in 2010 with Bankim Chandra Chattopadhya’s Durgeshnandini and
Rabindranath Tagore’s Three Novellas (Nashtaneer, Dui Bon and Malancha).
Durgeshnandini (The Lady of the Fort) by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay
Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay is the father of the Bengali novel and considered by many as its
greatest novelist. Durgeshnandini is his first novel in Bengali and the first complete novel in Indian
literature. Inspired by the romances of Walter Scott, it is a swashbuckling historical epic set in Bengal
in the 16th century during the reign of the Mughal emperor Akbar.
Three Novellas (Nashtaneer, Dui Bon Malancha) by Rabindranath Tagore
Nashtaneer (The Broken Nest), Malancha (The Garden) and Dui Bon (The Two Sisters) are considered
to be some of Tagore’s finest prose works. Subtle, full of psychological nuance and lyricism, this is
vintage Tagore.

Adventures in neuroscience

‘The Marco Polo of neuroscience.’ Richard Dawkins
‘The patients he describes are fascinating and his experiments on them are both simple and
ingenious. If you are at all interested in how your brain works, this is the book you must read.’
Francis Crick on Phantoms in the Brain
The brain remains a mystery to us. How can a three-pound mass of jelly that we can hold in our
palm imagine angels, contemplate the meaning of infinity, and even question its own place in the
cosmos? How can one study such a mystery?
Eminent neuroscientist Professor VS Ramachandran takes us on fascinating journey into the
human brain, studying patients who exhibit bizarre symptoms, and using them to understand the
functions of the normal brain. Along the way he asks big questions: How did abstract thinking
evolve? What is art? Why do we laugh? How are these processes hardwired in the neural mechanisms
of the human brain and why did they evolve? Brilliant, lucid and utterly compelling, The Man with
the Phantom Twin is a pathbreaking book from one of the leading neuroscientists today.
Vilayanur S. Ramachandran is the Director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, Professor at

The Valmiki Syndrome
winning the eternal battle between career and family
Ashok Banker
From the acclaimed author of the Ramayana series comes a book that may just
change your life
Hard work, ambition and maxing our careers are our ‘dharma’ in this age of Kali. But at what
cost? Like Arjuna on the field of Kurukshetra, we have ears only for Krishna telling us to do our duty;
increasingly this means we have little time for ourselves or our loved ones. Yet, family fulfilment,
personal relationships, filial responsibilities are as vital (more vital, in some ways) than a promotion,
turnover or profit line. How do we balance the two?
In his first major work of non-fiction, bestselling author and former journalist Ashok Banker
goes back to the Puranic sources to address this question. He writes of several classical figures, in
particular Ratnakaran the bandit and his transformation into Valmiki the sage, looking at how they
balanced work and personal needs, and finds valuable lessons we can learn from them. Using their
examples and real-life stories, he shows us how they contain the answers to today’s most pressing
issue: how to prioritize, manage and enhance our professional as well as personal lives. Insightful,
thought-provoking and utterly inspiring, The Valmiki Syndrome is a map to the most elusive treasure
of modern existence—personal fulfilment.
Ashok Banker began his career in market research, advertising and direct marketing before
embarking on a highly successful career as a journalist. The author of over twenty-one bestselling
books, he is best known for his internationally acclaimed Ramayana series. Over one million copies
of his books have been published in fifty-six countries and in seven languages.

The story of the Bengal
Renaissance
Awakening
A gripping narrative about the Bengal
Renaissance of the 19th century
In the 19th century, Bengal would witness a
revolution like it never had. It began with a band
of Englishmen, led by the brilliant William Jones.
Then there was the enigmatic Rammohun Roy
who invented a reformed Hinduism called the
Brahmo Samaj; and his friend, David Hare, who
conceived the idea of the Hindu College. There
was the tempestuous Michael Madhusudan who
created new forms of Bengali verse; and Michael’s
well-wisher, the scholar Vidyasagar, who fought
fiercely for the cause of Hindu widows. There
was Bankim Chandra, a civil servant who helped
create the Indian novel. There were Jagadish Bose
and Prafulla Chandra Ray, two lonely workers in
laughably primitive laboratories who became the
frontiersmen of Indian science; and Vivekananda,
the monk who preached a new form of Vedantism,
home and abroad. There was, finally, Rabindranath
Tagore, the very epitome of the Bengal Renaissance.
How did such an astonishing flowering come to take
place? And how did it change India? Immaculately
researched, told with colour, drama and passion,
Awakening is a stunning achievement.

Anagha Neelakantan is a freelance journalist who
has written for Newsweek, Far Eastern Economic
Review, Himal and Biblio among others. She was
educated at Princeton University and has worked
with the Nepal Mission of the UN and been an
executive editor of The Nepali Times.
Nepal at war and peace
Nepal has seen more change in the last fifteen
years than most countries. Its two-hundred-andthirty-years old monarchy was dealt a grievous
blow with a horrific multiple murder that remains
unexplained to this day. Alongside it came a decadelong civil war spearheaded by the Maoists. 16,000
people died, over a thousand disappeared, tens of
thousands were affected, the little infrastructure
and state presence the country had was destroyed.
Peace has come with uncertainty. Elections
were held in 2008 with the Maoists coming to
power in a coalition government. A year later the
coalition crumbled, replaced with another one.
Ethnic assertion is posing new and unpredictable
challenges, impunity and corruption are rife and
there are two standing armies in the country.
What does the future hold? Combining reportage
and political history, and superbly narrated, A Half
Revolution is the definitive book on Nepal’s recent
history.

Death in Mumbai
It was the murder that had Mumbai hooked. On
May 7, 2008, Neeraj Grover, a young TV executive
disappeared mysteriously. A beautiful aspiring
actress, Maria Susairaj, and her dashing naval
officer boyfriend, Emile Jerome, were accused of
hacking his body into three hundred pieces, and
then setting them on fire.
The players were young, attractive and upwardly
mobile. The press, hungry for a headline. As
the details of the case unravelled, so too did the
questions: What had gone wrong? Why were these
young professionals taking to violent crime? Was it
the savage pressures of the city? Or was the cause
even darker?
Meenal Baghel, editor of Mumbai’s leading
tabloid, Mumbai Mirror, uncovers the true story
of the most sensational crime that has hit the
maximum city in recent years. Using exclusive
interviews with the police, friends and family of
the victim and the accused, Baghel draws a riveting
picture of a murder whose mystery has not faded,
even though the killers may have been found.
Gripping and hardhitting, Death in Mumbai is
a fascinating insight into the new wave of crime
affecting the Indian city.

is a remarkable new phenomenon. Mastering
Knowledge Management investigates the role

Seal the Deal and Make it Work
Understanding Mergers
and Acquisitions
All that you never knew about making and
breaking corporate deals
Despite their immense popularity as an idea,
M&As have had an astounding history of failure.
But there have also been companies that avoided
the usual pitfalls and these offer invaluable
lessons to managers. An excellent introduction to
corporate collaboration, Understanding Mergers and
Acquisitions demystifies the complexities of dealmaking and offers practical insights to managers.
Beginning with a broad overview of the world of
M&As and its major players, the book goes on to
explore the phases in M&A activity—planning,
deal execution and post-deal integration. It also
examines the potential roadblocks and dealbreakers that have caused most talks to fall through.
With a wide variety of case studies spanning
different Indian industries, Understanding Mergers
and Acquisitions brings a critical business subject
vividly to life.

managers and decision-makers need to be more
perceptive, agile and vigilant than ever before.
Drawing on contemporary business affairs and
corporate strategies, it explores the nature and
scope of IP and the evolution of national laws
and global agreements like the TRIPs to protect it.
It also explores the measures (the use of patents,
copyright and trademarks) used by some of the
biggest brands—Coke, MGM, 20th Century Fox,
Microsoft, Harrods, Maruti, Tata—to manage
disputes and protect themselves. Accessible, clear
and using a wide range of case studies, Business

Biryani
Pratibha Karan
'An extraordinary book. One that will become a classic.' Vir Sanghvi
The biryani is India’s most beloved dish—one that has spread to all the four corners of the
country and assumed many forms. It originated in the Mughal courts, flowering in the jagirs of
Awadh, and it is in Lucknow, Delhi and the small Muslim principalities of north India that one
finds the classic versions, subtle, refined and delicately flavoured. Pratibha Karan gives us not
just the definitive recipes from these regions, but unearths rare and old dishes such as a biryani
made with oranges, Rose Biryani and Kebab Biryani. In the south, the biryani has an equally
distinguished lineage, if not more so. There are the blue-blooded biryanis of Hyderabad, which
include gems such as the Doodh ki Biryani, Keeme ki biryani and Bater ki biryani. Away from the
royal courts, the biryani has adapted itself into a spicy local delicacy in Tamil Nadu, with many
towns like Salem, Aambur, Dindigul boasting of their own signature version of the dish. Kerala
too is home to many—a prawn biryani spiced with curry leaves and aniseed, a mutton one laced
with star anise. There are as many stunning variations in the east and west—Goan biryanis
using vinegar and olives; unusual dishes from the Parsi and Sindhi communities; Bengali
adaptations using fish and mustard seeds, even a dish from Assam! Immaculately researched,
full of extraordinary recipes, and beautifully designed and photographed, Biryani is the ultimate
book on this princely dish.

He was the most famous Indian artist of his age: the
darling of the royal courts; an artist whose depiction
of gods and goddesses as men and women put a
human face to divinities; and the entrepreneur who
realized his dream of bringing art to the masses. For
the first time comes a grippingly told story of Raja
Ravi Varma (1848–1906), from his early days with the
royal family of Travancore in Kerala, to the years he
spent teaching himself to paint and blend European
art’s sensuality with Indian subjects, through to his
sojourns into the royal courts of India as a celebrity
portraitist, and his move to Mumbai where he
started a printing press that left him bankrupt.

‘Passionate and convincing.’ New Humanist
As India’s economy has liberalized, so too has it
become Hinduized. The last decade has seen the
proliferation of powerful godmen, a massive rise in
temple rituals and an increased demand for priests.
Political campaigns regularly use pujas and yajnas.
From promoting religious tourism to handing
higher education to private sector players who
use religious trusts to run their institutions, many
of the government’s privatization measures are
linked with the promotion of Hinduism. Why has
this happened? Is this end of Indian secularism?

arguably the most turbulent period of Pakistan’s
