WHAT DO I
THINK IS THE
‘MAX’ ABOUT
GHENT?
"
Where shall I start? It’s bad enough trying
to translate the ‘max’, Ghent’s word for
fantastic, amazing, awesome. It is the ‘max’
that this city combines picturesque stepped
gables with a seriously cool music scene and
parties in mediaeval cellars. It is the ‘max’
how the Ghent Festival attracts almost two
"You have
picked a
perfect time
to come here"
million visitors in July, in the middle of the city,
with no unpleasant incidents. It is the ‘max’
that KAA Gent football club won the national
title for the first time in its history last year,
and that elderly supporters stood quivering
with happiness.
Plenty has been written about what characters
the people of Ghent are, with their stubbornness
or rebellious nature. Those are clichés, but
there really is a different atmosphere here
than in other European cities—or even other
Belgian cities. Anyone who opens a new bar
will always make sure it doesn’t look too new.
There is not much call for trendy lounge bars.
And if you make too much noise in a restaurant
or complain that your food hasn’t arrived fast
P.2
enough, you will probably accidentally get
forgotten about for just a little bit longer.
Even in haute cuisine restaurants, they invest
more in a good atmosphere than silver cutlery
or waiters who come and help your backside
find the chair. Ghent has even made a name
for itself with the ‘Flemish Foodies’, who are
not so much after a Michelin star as looking
to buy good bacon from a butcher they know
personally. ‘Veggie Thursday’ is another one
of those things: vegetarians in Ghent realised
that they couldn’t convert everyone right away.
And that eating less meat is a good start in
itself. The idea of serving vegetarian food only
for one day a week in all the city-run schools
has since convinced many other towns and
cities to do the same.
winter
Ghent
But we shouldn’t be blowing our own
trumpets, right? As for myself, I lead a
double life in Ghent: for half the week I’m
out on the town at night, for the other half I
look after my daughter. This is a place where
you can easily combine the two. The centre
of commercialised student life is on and
around Overpoortstraat, but that was never
my thing (and I’m too old for it now anyway).
I’d rather go out in the area around Bij SintJacobs and the Vlasmarkt. My seven-yearold daughter’s top tips are the Rozebroeken
swimming pool and STAM city museum, with
an impressive aerial photograph of Ghent
on which she tries to find our house. And
on cold days she always wants to go for
pancakes at Gwenola.

WINTER LIGHT
"Welcome to
Ghent!
I hope we’ll
meet again,
one day or
one night"
By the way, you have picked a perfect time
to come here. The good thing is that in
the winter you often see Ghent as it really
is. There are fewer visitors, which makes
a walk over St. Michael’s Bridge doubly
breathtaking, with its unlimited view of the
three impressive towers. They are always
pretty amazing, even for people born and
bred here. The best time to see them is early
on a clear autumn morning. The city is also
unbelievably beautiful at night, because
all the monuments are lit up in different
but subtle ways. I think we’ve even won
prizes for the lights. Welcome to Ghent!
I hope we’ll meet again, one day or one
night.

LIGHT
HEADED
Discover how Ghent reinvents itself when the sun
goes down. The Light Plan makes the city sparkle,
highlighting new features of buildings, squares
and monuments. Enjoy it until midnight, when it
is replaced by functional lighting. You will find
the Illuminated Walk in our tourist guide, but
here are a few gems a little further afield to enjoy
as extra treats.

INTO
WINTER
GHENT
At the beginning of December, it feels as
though Ghent is shaking off the miserable
weather, getting all dressed up and making
a beeline for Christmas and New Year. The
historic centre gradually metamorphoses into
a winter landscape, from Sint-Baafsplein to
the Korenmarkt. Even the Castle of the Counts
is transformed into a fairytale winter castle.
The city is ready for its annual date with the
Ghent Winter Festivities!

More than 130 wooden huts spread out
from Sint-Baafsplein, along the Botermarkt
and Klein Turkije to the end of the
Korenmarkt. The whole neighbourhood gets
out its Christmas decorations, including
Donkersteeg, Groentenmarkt and SintVeerleplein. Wander among firs and pines,
amble past stalls selling snacks and drinks,
fancy trinkets and authentic crafts. The
scent of pine resin and mulled wine make the
experience complete. Ghent under its green
winter blanket, a Christmas city at its best.

Emile Braunplein looks like a tableau from a
Brueghel painting: warmly wrapped-up skaters
whirl around in a mediaeval setting. If you look
upwards for a moment, you will realise that the
contemporary architecture of the City Pavilion
fits the scene perfectly. There is a separate ice
rink for young skaters.
BIG WHEEL
The big wheel, ‘La Grande Roue de Paris’
is coming all the way to Ghent from the
Place de la Concorde in Paris this year. The
comfortable cabins take you 55 metres up
into the air, where you can see all the way to
the port and beyond.

"
The cliché is true: a portion of fries is a weekly ritual for every
normal Belgian. Ghent’s favourite order is large fries with beef
stew sauce and mayonnaise. Think of it as an edible yellow,
brown and white expressionist painting.
Everyone has their favourite chip shop, but personally I always go
to the big place near St. James’ Church. The Turkish Ghent family
who run it learned their trade from retired chip shop owners and
they fry them twice at the right temperature to get them golden
yellow.
De Frietketel is a good choice for vegetarians, because they use
vegetable oil. The portions are probably the biggest in the whole
of Ghent, because vegetarians who eat fries deserve to get fat too.
De Gouden Saté in the student area is famous because it only
closes for a couple of hours a day. Its legendary owner Julien died
in 2013, and to be honest we are still waiting for a statue of him to
appear on that big, empty Sint-Pietersplein.
Ghent’s most typical chip shop is right in the centre, against the
wall of the Great Butchers’ Hall. The owner, Filip, will help you
pronounce ‘ne grute mee mayonaise en stuverijsause’ with a
Ghent accent.

OUTSIDE THE
CITY CENTRE
MARICHAL
"
You only really know this city if
you have been outside the centre,
and the best way to do it is on your
bike! ‘Kerk Gent’ in Gentbrugge
is a magnificent example of nobullshit creativity. In the hall of
an old plastic factory you are
just as likely to find experimental
dance, performances or a screenprinting festival as a table tennis
evening on Tuesdays or food
trucks on Sundays. Check out
their Facebook page (Kerk Gent)
to see what’s happening and be
ready to be welcomed as the only
tourist in the place!
There are all sorts of things going
on in Sint-Amandsberg as well.
A good tip is the restaurant
Alberte, with its contemporary,
seasonal Belgian cuisine. It is
typical of Ghent: really good
chefs in a down-to-earth café
setting.
The old port area of the Muide
is also changing fast, and is
certainly worth a cycle trip with
a stop for a pint in the authentic
working class pub De Viking,
while you still have the chance!”

PRACTICAL
ON FOOT
If you really want to enjoy Ghent, choose your
means of transport wisely. Distances within the
‘kuip’—the historic centre—are not that great,
and it is easy to discover the city.
Doing it on foot is perfectly feasible. You
will find an unbelievable treasure trove of
things to see and do within walking distance.
Incidentally, the city has the largest low-traffic
pedestrian zone in Europe. Wander through
the streets, among the people, and experience
Ghent at a walking pace.

Experiencing Ghent by bike is a really good
idea: the city loves bicycles and cyclists love
the city. If you don’t have a bike with you, you
can rent one at either of the railway stations
and in the centre under the City Pavilion.

You will find taxi ranks at which you can pick
up a cab at strategic locations around the city.
A trip from Sint-Pieters railway station to the
Korenmarkt costs at least 12 euros.
USING PUBLIC
TR ANSPORT
The city is easy to reach by public transport as
well: buses and trams will take you to where you
want to go from early in the morning until late in
the evening. You will find a ‘Lijnwinkel’, a place
where you can buy tickets, at Sint-Pieters railway
station, on the Korenmarkt and at ‘Gent-Zuid’
(Woodrow Wilsonplein). Tram lines 1 and 21/22
take you from one end of Ghent to the other,
passing right through the city centre.

RESTORATION OF THE GHENT ALTARPIECE A TEMPORARY EXHIBITION ALONGSIDE THE
PERMANENT ONE - MYSTIC MUSIC
The two musical panels of the Mystic Lamb are firmly
embedded in the collective memory of all musicians and

detail. The vocal ensemble Psallentes will once again bring
the musical universe of the Mystic Lamb to life.

MIAT
WOW, ENAMEL!
Enamel is more than just trendy collector’s items such as
advertisements. A century ago, enamel was part of daily
life: stoves, ovens and bath tubs were enamelled to prevent
them from rusting. Belgium was an important producer of
enamelled utensils and advertisements. This exhibition in
the Museum on Industry, Labour and Textile tells the story
of the Belgian enamel industry.
3/12/2015-26/6/2016
MSK
LINES OF TANGENCY
Where do the tangents between past and present, myself
and others, nature and culture, lie? The Museum of Fine Arts
(MSK) invites contemporary artists to the museum to work
in this grey zone where borders blur and alternative ways
of seeing things emerge. In this way the artists and public
formulate a new vision of the world, starting locally.
10/10/2015-5/3/2016
HOUSE OF ALIJN
THE SIX-DAY RACE
The roar of Derny bikes, the smell of Algipan, the creaking
oval track and the winner’s cries: it’s race time! This
exhibition brings the glory days of the Belgian Six-Day
Race back to life. Tighten your belts for a ride through life
on and beside the track. The life of champions, legends,
minor heroes and great races

DRAWING | THE BOTTOM LINE

Art (S.M.A.K.) presents work by around 50 international

art today. The exhibition shows various facets of drawing.

AYSE ERKMEN & ANN VERONICA JANSSENS
In the spring of 2016, Erkmen and Janssens will each create
a permanent sculpture on the Korenmarkt, commissioned by
the City of Ghent. The Municipal Museum of Contemporary
Art (S.M.A.K.) has taken this opportunity to organise a
double exhibition giving a broader context for these works
within the oeuvre of the two artists and investigating the
points of contact between their works.
31/10/2015-14/2/2016
ST PETER'S ABBEY
HISTORY@THE MOVIES
Hugh Grant, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson and Colin
Firth are just a few of the names of the period drama
stars in the exhibition History@The Movies. Costumes,
film excerpts and stills from historic films and television
series like ‘Downton Abbey’, ‘Sense and Sensibility’, ‘Pride
and Prejudice’ and ‘The White Queen’ take pride of place,
showing how history is presented on screen. With glorious
costumes and romantic film scenes, this unique exhibition
takes you back to a distant past or more recent history.

Meet the cheeky young lady who chops her disgusting
frog bridegroom to pieces, Vuil Vel, the dirty old man
and other characters. Marita De Sterck retells these
old stories in the form of easy to read fairy tales
which, in their adult form, fascinate readers of all

by Jonas Thys.

OUT OF THE SHADOWS - 200 YEARS OF THE
BROTHERS OF CHARITY AND PSYCHIATRY
200 years ago, psychiatric patients were released
from their shackles in the Castle of Gerald the Devil in
Ghent. This event can be considered the beginning of
psychiatric care in Belgium. Using photos, film clips,
witness accounts etc., this exhibition shows how
inhumanely mentally ill people were treated in the
past, and often still are even today.
30/9/2015-17/1/2016

Shame is a personal and social phenomenon: just
as every individual deals with it differently, so does
every culture. This exhibition explores the issue
through objects from other cultures, documents from
the history of psychiatry or present-day testimonials.
Modern and contemporary artists address the feeling
in paintings, sculpture, photography and video.
