MESSAGE
Now that all the snow has melted, we get to enjoy our spring and
summer. I am sure there are few who appreciate the warmer
months as much as we do.
Our 36th Annual Conference and Tradeshow
wrapped up a few weeks ago in Canmore,
and I have heard some amazing feedback
about the education sessions and the
activities that took place. The presenters and
speakers that were brought in did a great job
of teaching us and inspiring us. Also, that
fresh layer of spring snow made for some
beautiful views. Hosting a conference is a lot
of work and the organizing committee did a
great job in putting it together. We truly
appreciate the work that is put in to enhance
our experiences. Please check back to our
website, www.aarfp.com, as information
regarding next year's conference in Jasper
gets posted.
After our conference, I got the opportunity to attend the
Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia conference
with our Executive Director Kim Snell. They put on a very good
event, and it is great to meet the members of their association.
This is a valuable part of our relationship, as

At the AGM and the Zone Meetings, it was nice to see the great
attendance and the number of elections that took place. I am
excited to see the numbers of members interested in getting
more involved in our association. I hope that those who were
not successful this time consider running again in the future.

Lifetime Membership Award
Don Dombrosky
Thank you all for your warm appreciation when I was
awarded the Association Life Membership Award. Receiving
this honor is not something I have thought about receiving
through my involvement in the Association. I've been a part
of the organization since the beginning and I have tried to
contribute to its success and growth. Along the way I have
met many people and established some great relationships.
Your response when my name was announced at the banquet
was humbling and overwhelming. At that moment I know I
was in a room with people who were more than Association
members, I was in a room with friends.
Thank you once again, have a great summer, and I'll see you
all in Jasper. o

Riparian Areas
Do you have a wetland, pond, creek or storm water
retention areas in your park or Town limits? Are they manmade or natural? Did you know that part of parks
maintenance can include these areas?
One of the most important areas associated with these
types of water features is the riparian area. Riparian areas
are strips of green vegetation influenced by water and
found around creeks, sloughs, rivers, ponds and lakes that
begin with fine wet soil development1. You may also know
them as floodplains, shorelines, or green zones.
The functions of riparian areas are endless and if protected
and maintained properly, can add value in many different
ways to your parks and natural areas including increased
aesthetic value, biodiversity and water quality.
Depending on the region and ecosystem, riparian zones
can consist of grasses, sedges, shrubs, woody plants, and
trees. These zones share important functions and benefits
when riparian zones are kept healthy. Some of these

Establish and Protect a Riparian Buffer:
So is your riparian area healthy? Consider doing a riparian
health assessment on your own! Cows and Fish, a nonprofit society, is a great resource to help you with the

Buffer zones will vary in width depending on the region,
watershed, and identified objectives. Designs or restoration
plans should also consider erosion potential of the soil,
native plants suitable for wildlife and fish, and identify
permitted or prohibited activities within the buffer zone.
This could be as simple as mowing further from the
water body.

Effective communication in a
culturally diverse workplace
At its core, cultural diversity is about accepting and
respecting people's differences and understanding that
everyone is unique. The same can be said for communication.
To do it well, you need to understand your audience and craft
your message in a way that will make the most sense to them.
When that audience is culturally diverse, the challenge is to
understand their differences and be sensitive to how your
message will be received.
Four ways to communicate better in today's
diverse workplace
1. Use clear language. When you are communicating with a
culturally diverse audience, keep your language clear,
concise and straightforward. Avoid jargon, slang terms,
euphemisms and colloquial expressions. For example,
you could say: That sales report was fantastic! Instead of:
That sales report was a slam dunk!
LEISURE LINES • AARFP
2. Understand differences in body language. You may be
surprised to learn that different cultures have very
different practices when it comes to non-verbal forms of
communication. For instance, in most countries, people
do not greet each other by shaking hands, and some
cultures find it disrespectful to engage in direct eye
contact. Additionally, some cultures have different
comfort levels when it comes to personal space and
touching. When in doubt, leave at least one arm's
length between you and your colleagues, and keep your
hands to yourself.
3. Practice reflective listening or paraphrasing. When in
conversation, paraphrasing or repeating the message back
is a good habit to get into. This will help clarify meaning
and eliminate issues that may surface as a result of
misunderstanding. The same is true of written
communication – paraphrase to clarify any doubts you
may have.

Giving Back . . .
The feeling of giving was so huge that the committee did it
again in 2013. We received equipment from the City of
Spruce Grove and we refurbished the playground
equipment, we also received some brand new equipment
that was donated by Kompan and Elephant Play. After two
years of fundraising* and communicating with our new
contacts …off to Hoi An, Vietnam we went. The
community was Cam' than. We arrived in Vietnam on
March 2, 2013 and we were met by the Chairperson of a
volunteer group that I had been working with for a year,
and the Mayor of the area. The large container that we
packed in Edmonton for Vietnam arrived on time and was
on the build site when we arrived. I have many years of
experience working with volunteers, and there was no time
wasted getting the equipment, tools, etc unpacked. Being
that we were in Vietnam and not in Edmonton, we did
experience some challenges. We didn't have some of the
resources that we usually had in Canada. It didn't slow us
down any … we dug 80 holes by hand, mixed concrete by
hand and did it all with love in our hearts. We worked
through rain the first 2 days and then very hot weather for
the last 2 days. We also had local community people come
out and assist with the installation of the playground. It is
my experience that this gives the community ownership
and a greater appreciation. We had some Vietnamese that
were very good at speaking English and they worked as
interpreters for us, so the communication was really great.
installation of the playground and moving sand, we found
a magazine rack of large machine gun bullets still intact.
The Vietnam officials were not too happy that this
happened, but we all knew that this was the reality that
they lived with daily.
The equipment installed was valued at $80,000, and the
group had it installed in 4 days. That was amazing. We
continued on next page...
We had 238 cubic yards of sand to install and this was
done with shovels and wheel barrels. Everyone worked
together shoveling, moving sand and raking in order to
have the sand levels at the required depth. There were
times when the trucks were having difficulty keeping up.
We all worked really well as a team. When I started with
this project I knew that Vietnam may still have unfound
remnants of the war, so I made sure that the site was
excavated prior to our arrival. While we were doing the

had a fabulous grand opening of the playground. Present
at the grand opening celebration were approximately 250
children, their parents, and grandparents. Normally we
would have a ribbon cutting ceremony, but these vibrant
excited children simply could not wait for that to happen.
These young, smiling, laughing children were all over the
equipment. The children of Hoi An, Vietnam do not have
these sorts of play structures and they watched and waited
patiently everyday for the “Canadian Playground”, as they
called it, to be completed. It was interesting that with
some of the equipment, the children had to be shown how
to play on it.
The project was so successful that the Governor of
Vietnam made a special dinner invitation for myself,
Thomas Lukaszuk and our wives. Also in attendance was
Giang, or as we called her Jazz. She was absolutely
amazing to work with. Jazz has spent countless hours
volunteering in Vietnam on numerous projects. The
Government was very impressed with our work, but most
importantly we were able to assist in getting Giang
recognized with her Government.

Effective communication in a culturally diverse workplace...
4. Be open and inclusive of other cultures. Although it is
natural to gravitate towards others who share our
preferences and traditions, getting to know your fellow
co-workers from culturally diverse backgrounds can help
build relations, and open up your world to new
experiences. Bear in mind that they may be new to this
country and have challenges of their own, as they try to
navigate a different language, customs and way of life.

It sold out with over 60 booths, and was held at
the Canmore Recreation Centre. The exhibitor's
booths were highlighted throughout the evening
as names for gift cards were drawn every 15
minutes! Both delegates and exhibitors were able
to pass on some knowledge and business
opportunities. Thanks to all the Exhibitors for
coming to Canmore to connect with new and old
clients.

The entertainment that night was Roman Danylo, and
he managed to get the crowd laughing while teasing a
few of our delegates!
This very busy and successful conference was
wrapped up perfectly by our closing keynote speaker,
Alvin Law. He captivated the audience with his humor
and ability. Once he was finished, the conference
committee drew a name for the Grand Prize (Gift
certificate for a Helicopter ride, Canmore hotel stay
and meals). This was won by Colleen Fecteau from
Edmonton! o

June Larson, Recreation Facilities Supervisor,
Recreation, Parks & Culture is Retiring
We would like to recognize June
Larson, Recreation Facilities
Supervisor, for her many
contributions leading and
managing a team of staff at the
Rotary Recreation Complex,
G.H. Dawe Community Centre
and Roland Michener Aquatic
Centre from 2008 to 2012. June
came to us with a wealth of
experience in the field of
recreation and contributed greatly
to the revitalization of these
aquatic-based facilities into
thriving hubs of programming and activities. She has also
contributed provincially to the two professional
organizations of the Alberta Association of Recreation
Facilities Personnel (AARFP) as an active member and
with the hosting of the annual conference in Red Deer in
2010, and as a board member
representing Central Alberta for
the past two years with the
Alberta Recreation and Parks
Association (ARPA).
June is always dressed like a
fashion model, with a different
outfit each day, hair, makeup,
accessories and jewellery to
match. June has a great sense of
humor, and is always “on the go”
from one facility to another to
meet with her team members and
encourage them to ever greater achievements. She never
walks … always runs … unless she is cooking up a
gourmet lunch from the leftovers of Chef John's feast from
the night before.

June Larson, Recreation Facilities Supervisor,
Recreation, Parks & Culture is Retiring . . .
It is with fond memories of a very “colourful” gal,
with a love for people, an engaging personality,
and an unmatched zest for life, that we bid adieu
to June to take on her new adventure in retirement
of … even more activity (golf, skiing, hiking,
travelling) … and even more socializing (dinners,
hot tub parties, grandma sleepovers) … to catch
up with her man, John, who has been very active
in his retirement for a while now.
All the best, June! Thank you for sharing your
best five years in Red Deer with the Recreation
Section Team. You will always hold a special
place in our hearts.
