AU Men’s Basketball 1 Meet the Head Coach JAMES LANCASTER Head Coach 12th Season James Lancaster is beginning his 12th season as the Head Coach of Aurora University’s men’s basketball program. Prior to becoming the men’s coach, Lancaster coached the AU’s women’s program for four seasons. During his tenure as the men’s Head Coach, Lancaster has amassed a composite record of 199-88 (.693), which is the highest winning percentage of any men’s basketball coach at AU. Currently, Lancaster is 27th in wins among the NCAA men’s basketball active coaches and 31st in wins all-time. The Spartans won back-to-back titles in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference in 1996-1997 and 1997-1998, and again in 20032004 and 2004-2005. Lancaster also led the men’s program to their first NCAA Division III playoff appearance in 1998, and the team repeated that performance in 2001, 2002 and 2005. In 2005, AU hosted its first NCAA men’s basketball tournament game. Lancaster was named NIIC Coach of the Year five times, in1994-1995, 1997-1998, 1998-1999, 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. In his first season as AU’s men’s Head Coach in 1994-1995, he was tabbed NIIC Coach of the Year. That gave him the unusual distinction of winning that award back-to-back as women’s coach in (1993-1994) and as a men’s coach. In addition to success in terms of won-lost records, Lancaster has built the AU program with a reputation for being competitive with a strong schedule of top-flight opponents. One of the biggest highlights for the men’s basketball team was a first-round victory at Trinity (TX) University in the 2002 NCAA Tournament. AU has dominated Meet the Assistant Coaches DREW GRONAU Student Assistant Coach First Season 2 AU Men’s Basketball the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference under Lancaster, going 94-31 in the past 11 years for a .752 winning percentage. A 1986 graduate of Aurora University with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, Lancaster was an Assistant Coach for the AU men’s team from 1986 to 1990. Lancaster played two seasons for Aurora University (1984-1986). As a senior, he was named All Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference and AU’s male Athlete of the Year. Lancaster was also the Spartans’ MVP. Lancaster went on to earn a master’s degree from Chicago State University in 1999. Prior to attending AU, Lancaster attended Wabash Community College (WCC), where he played for one of the nation’s top junior college programs. While at WCC, Lancaster was teammates with former NBA star Kenny Norman. Lancaster also enjoyed a stand-out prep career at Taylorville High School. As Head Coach of AU’s women’s program, Lancaster had a composite 58-42, including a 32-8 record in the NIIC. During this time, his team had a pair of second-place finishes in 1991 and 1992, and won back-to-back NIIC titles in 1993 and 1994. The 1993-1994 team qualified for the NCAA post season playoffs for the first time in school history. In 1997-1998, they made the NCAA Tournament. Lancaster and his wife, Michele, have four daughters, Baylee, Kelsey, Jenna and Delaney. They reside in Sugar Grove. In addition to his duties as men’s basketball coach, Lancaster is also the Director of Freshman Recruitment. JABARI HARRELL Assistant Coach Fourth Season Jabari Harrell joined the men’s coaching staff in the 2002-2003 season. Harrell played three years on the Spartan men’s basketball team. He was the team captain of the varsity basketball team from 1997 to 2001. He was named NIIC All-Conference his sophomore, junior and senior years. Jabari was also named CoConference Player of the Year his senior season. In 1998, he was a part of the first NCAA Division III playoff team and returned to the playoffs with the Spartans in 2001. Harrell is the all-time assist leader at Aurora University. A 2002 graduate of Aurora University, Harrell earned his degree in recreation administration. He currently is Assistant Director of Student Activities and Intramural/Rec-Time Coordinator at AU. 2005-2006 Season Preview The 2004-2005 Aurora University men’s basketball team had one of the most successful seasons in its history. After sweeping the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference regular and tournament championships, the team entered the 2005 NCAA Division III Championships, hosting their first NCAA postseason contest in school history. AU fell to Calvin College 71-59 on Saturday, March 5, 2005, in the second round, the furthest AU has progressed in the NCAA tournament (matching the 2002-2003 Spartans). Last year marked one of many firsts for the AU men’s basketball team. On February 15, 2005, the team made its first appearance on the D3hoops.com Top 25 as No. 24. AU concluded the season at No. 20 with their 23-5 record. The 2005-2006 Spartans, ranked preseason No. 22 by D3hoops.com, aim to match the success AU has experienced over the past decade under Head Coach James Lancaster. “It will be difficult with no automatic bid this year, but we will just have to watch and make the nonconference games just as important as conference,” said Lancaster. In his 11 seasons at the helm of the men’s program, Lancaster is 199-88 overall and 94-31 in the Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference. Following last season, Lancaster was named Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year after leading the men’s team to a 23-5 record and 11-1 in the NIIC. The conference championship marked the Spartan men’s second consecutive title, and the Coach of the Year award was Lancaster’s fifth in his 11 years as men’s basketball coach, the other four coming after the 1994-1995, 1997-1998, 1998-1999 and 2003-2004 seasons. The 2005-2006 Spartans return a core of players from last season, including three starters. Sophomore forward Larry Welton (Chicago/Thornwood HS), a D3hoops.com Third-Team Preseason All-America selection and AU’s leading scorer last year, returns after having a remarkable first season as a collegian. “It will be a much tougher year for Larry having more pressure and a bigger presence on the court to other teams, getting double teamed and pressed all the time,” said Lancaster. “He is up for the challenge, I’m sure. He will just have to continue his work ethic on his inside and outside game.” Welton was named a finalist for the V Foundation Comeback Award, NABC Second Team All-American, D3hoops.com Midwest First-Team All-Region, NIIC Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year and All-Conference. Welton finished third in the league in scoring with an 18.3 point per game average in 12 contests, leading AU to an 11-1 regular season record and 2-0 in the tournament. In addition to his scoring prowess, Welton averaged 7.8 rebounds and shot 50.6% (89-176) from the field. On the season, Welton averaged a team high 20.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 1.46 blocks per game. Joining Welton are four seniors, guard Courtney Carson (Decatur, IL/MacArthur HS), forward Jeremy Cartwright (Joliet, IL/Joliet Township HS), forward Jeremy Rauch (Tinley Park, IL/Rich Central HS) and guard Tony Carson Jr. (Decatur, IL/MacArthur HS). Carson will once again drive the AU offense. An NIIC Honorable Mention All-Conference selection last season, he was one of four Spartans to average double digits in scoring (10.1 points per game), with 4.04 assists and grabbing 4.1 rebounds per game. Cartwright averaged 7.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while Rauch was a spot starter and regular off the AU bench, averaging 5.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. Lancaster stated, “It is important for these guys to step up for the program and start to stand out as two-to three-year players on varsity.” The 2005-2006 Spartans will have two big pairs of shoes to fill from last year’s graduating class. “There is no way you can replace a three-year and four-year starter. However, team defense, controlling the boards and improved shot selection should help us recover from losing two veteran players,” said Lancaster. Last year, guard Adam McCoy was named D3hoops.com Midwest First-Team All-Region and NIIC All Conference. McCoy entered the record books by scoring his 1000th career point on December 22, 2004, against Illinois Institute of Technology. He finished his career with 1,199 points, placing him 15th all-time. McCoy is also the AU record holder for three-point field goals made (244) and attempted (636) in a career. McCoy was named one of 10 finalists for the 2004-2005 Jostens Award, Division III basketball’s top honor, and was named to 2005 ESPN the Magazine’s Academic All-American Second-Team and FirstTeam All-District V College Division Men’s Basketball, which is selected by the Sports Information Directors from throughout the country. Forward Drew Gronau was named NIIC Honorable Mention All-Conference. He entered the Spartan record book last season as he scored his 1000th career point on February 2, 2005, against Rockford College. He finished his career at AU with 1,091 points, which placed him 20th on the all-time scoring list. He went on to average 12.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. Lancaster will look to several returning and incoming players to fill McCoy’s and Gronau’s shoes. Junior Aaron Burden (Park Forest, IL/Rich Central HS) and sophomores Luke Engelhardt (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville HS), Doug Lambert (Warrenville, IL/Wheaton-Warrenville South HS) and John Davis (Indianapolis/Cardinal Ritter HS) will vie for playing time at the guard and wing positions. Incoming freshmen Chad Trudo (Yorkville, IL/Yorkville HS), Vic Mendez (Plano, IL/Plano HS) and Dusty Magee (Knightstown, IN/Knightstown HS) enter the AU program with top high school accolades and look to see early action for the Spartans. Trudo was the Aurora Beacon News Class AA Player of the Year, Mendez was the Class A Player of the Year, while Magee was a participant in the Indiana Top 40 game. The Spartans will aim to match their scoring prowess of last season, when they tallied 83.1 points per game while giving up 71.1. A tough nonconference schedule that includes several ranked Division III programs as well as Division I Northern Illinois, will test the Spartans before beginning the tough Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference schedule. With regard to playing NIU, Lancaster said, “A DI game is great experience for any DIII program. Not only the large crowds, but being televised and broadcasted will give our team experience in a tournamenttype atmosphere.” With a quick-strike offense and hounding defense, AU will strive to capture its third consecutive NIIC crown, a second consecutive bid to the NCAA tournament, as well as a second straight 20-win season. Julian Eison – 1,033 (1989-1992) Aurora College - 1970-1974 and NBA Great - 1974-1986 In a pre game ceremony prior to the March 17, 1978, game between the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls, Dr. Sam Bedrosian, Aurora University’s former Athletic Director, ceremoniously took Aurora College’s #43 out of commission. It was a day to honor “MJ” of “Da Bulls.” No, not that “MJ.” This was a tribute to Aurora College’s original “MJ”...Mickey Johnson, formerly of “Da Spartans.” At a time when the other “MJ” was probably just learning to dribble a basketball and pounding milk (instead of Gatorade), Mickey Johnson was performing feats of excellence against the opponents on AU ’s schedule. Johnson also helped dispel any nay sayers who may have felt that his incredible collegiate numbers were a result of playing at a nonNCAA Division I program. In his 12year NBA career– the first five of which were spent with the Bulls – Johnson averaged 14.1 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He racked up 904 NBA games played with the Bulls, Indiana, Milwaukee, Golden State, and New Jersey. He appeared in 22 post season games with a scoring average of 13.7 p.p.g. As a forward, he also averaged nearly three assists per game and had two years with 300+ assists. But Johnson is about more than numbers alone. He completed his degree work in business administration in 1974 (prior to entering the NBA), enjoyed an outstanding professional basketball career, worked to refurbish his old neighborhood, and is now a successful businessman in the Chicago area. That’s not too bad for a kid who grew up in the shadows of the old Sears Building and played very little high school basketball. Perhaps the inscription on the plaque presented to Johnson by Dr. Bedrosian that night in 1978 said it best: “...in appreciation for your contribution to Aurora College and SOCIETY - student, athlete, alumnus, gentleman. A model for every person who strives for excellence...” Mickey Johnson’s efforts and humanitarian outlook on life will forever be the standard for future Spartan athletes. He was – and is still today –The Pride of the Spartans. #3 Joe Weber (1980-1984) with 1,818 points. Though established initially to prepare graduates for ministry, the institution soon adopted a broader mission and moved to a new campus on the western edge of the nearby community of Aurora. With this change came a different name and a growing enrollment. In 1985, the institution was rechristened Aurora University. In 1992, the Aurora and George Williams College traditions blended when the two institutions entered into the affiliation agreement that paved the way for a merger eight years later. Today Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to award degrees at the baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral levels. The institution enrolls approximately 4,000 degree-seeking students a year on its Illinois and Wisconsin campuses. AU offers its undergraduates a wide range of on- and off-campus learning experiences. Students participate in more than 40 musical, literary, religious, social and service organizations and play active roles in campus governance. The university also fields 18 NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletic teams. The Spartans boast a winning tradition with 37 conference titles in recent years and 32 regular appearances in national tournaments. The Alumni Hall of Physical Education features a racquetball court, climbing wall, complete locker-room facilities, training room, weight room, aerobicactivities room, classroom and coaches’ offices. At AU, we believe that the educational needs of students are served best through the formation of strategic partnerships with institutions of like vision, mission and values. Such collaborations also enhance the well being of the communities around our campus. For example, our innovative partnership with the West Aurora School District is recognized nationally as a model for educational reform. Opening this year is AU’s $14 million Institute for Collaboration that will house this growing collaboration and the students and faculty it nurtures. Our George Williams Campus at Williams Bay, WI, is also the scene for important collaborative efforts. Last year, the residential, conference and academic facility, developed in partnership with Children’s Oncology Services Inc., opened. In the years ahead, the new building will serve as the home to the One Step At A Time Camp for children with cancer and the university’s rapidly growing academic program. Aurora University is located in west Aurora, within an hour’s drive of Chicago and at the western end of the Illinois Research and Development Corridor. It is accessible via Interstate 88 at the Orchard Road exit. statistics highlights upcoming games For Complete NIIC Conference Standings, Results, Directions and News LOG ON TO www.niiconline.com 2005-2006 Men’s Basketball Schedule Date Nov. 18, Fri Nov. 19, Sat Nov. 21, Mon Nov. 23, Wed Nov. 26, Sat Dec. 1, Thu Dec. 3, Sat Dec. 7, Wed Dec. 10, Sat Dec. 19, TUE Dec. 21, Wed Dec. 22, Thu Jan. 3, Tue Jan. 7, SAT Jan. 14, Sat Jan. 18, Wed Jan. 21, Sat Jan. 25, Wed Jan. 28, Sat Jan. 31, Tue Feb. 4, Sat Feb. 8, Wed Feb. 11, Sat Feb. 15, Wed Feb. 18, Sat Opponent Wheaton College Thunder Classic vs. McMurray University (TX) Wheaton College Thunder Classic vs. Wheaton College DOMINICAN UNIVERSITY CARLETON COLLEGE Northern Illinois University Millikin University Loras College Monmouth College Beloit College MILWAUKEE SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING DIII Desert Shootout vs. UW-Oshkosh DIII Desert Shootout vs. Wartburg or Mary Washington BLACKBURN COLLEGE NORTH CENTRAL COLLEGE Rockford College* EUREKA COLLEGE* CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY (IL)* CLARKE COLLEGE* Benedictine University* Judson College ROCKFORD COLLEGE* Eureka College* Concordia University(IL)* Clarke College* BENEDICTINE UNIVERSITY* Time 6:00 p.m. Site Wheaton, IL 8:00 p.m. Wheaton, IL 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 4:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 7:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. AURORA, IL AURORA, IL Dekalb, IL Decatur, IL Dubuque, IA Monmouth, IL Beloit, WI AURORA, IL 8:00 p.m. Las Vegas 8:00 p.m. Las Vegas 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 3:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m. AURORA, IL AURORA, IL Rockford, IL AURORA, IL AURORA, IL AURORA, IL Lisle, IL Elgin, IL AURORA, IL Eureka, IL River Forest, IL Dubuque, IA AURORA, IL All home games in BOLD * Northern Illinois-Iowa Conference Game 347 S.
