We all look forward to the mid-autumn festival – but for different reasons. For the adults, it is the time of the year for mooncakes and endless teas. The children enjoy more the carnival and playing with colourful lanterns. This year was no different. The celebrations began at 7pm with the first stage game, a mooncake-making contest. The kids were given plasticine and told to create a mooncake. That proved quite a challenge to their creativity! Then came the hula-hoop contest where 20 kids tried to keep the hoop off the ground for as long as they could. There was also a magic show. But the highlight of the evening must be the face changing performance! It was amazing how the performer changed his masks at lightning speed. Then as darkness descended, it was time for the kids to parade round the premises with their lanterns led by Chang Er. The sight of the children carrying their lighted lanterns by the poolside was simply magical! If it’s not dandruff, it’s itchy scalp or perhaps something worse – like falling hair! So it was with eager anticipation that our members came for the hair-care workshop conducted by Beijing 101. The consultant spoke of the various hair problems and their causes. Most could be traced to our lifestyle choices and improper hair-care routines. The consultant gave a demonstration on daily hair care techniques and a scalp massage which can be done at home. A lively discussion followed where members got the chance to ask the hot-button questions they’ve been carrying for a long time. Most of them went away satisfied. One delighted member won the lucky draw and walked away with a hamper of hair-care products. With the new confidence gained from the talk, members couldn’t wait for the weekend – to let their hair down! Here’s how you do your hair massage Will & Estate Planning: 13 October Security for your loved ones by JULIET SEAH Writing wills is not something we like to bring up in social conversation. It is a subject that can be sensitive and unpleasant. On the other hand, it is also something that is vital in ensuring that our loved ones are cared for in the event of our untimely death. The speaker Mr Kenneth Yap spoke of the benefits of writing a will and how the law will distribute assets in the absence of a will. Mr Yap shared a few scenarios to allow the participants to come to a better understanding of how they can ensure that their loved ones do not lose out in the distribution of their assets. Participants found out that there are various ways to distribute their assets. Some of the ways include by percentage, by a fixed amount of cash and by transferring their personal accounts. At the end of the talk, the participants had the chance to ask questions and have them answered by a professional. If nothing else, they left with a more positive attitude towards planning their will and estate. The games were Badminton, Billiards, Bowling, Golf, Squash, Soccer, Tennis and Table Tennis. SSC had a good start by taking the golf game by a solitary point. Then our socceroos came on and had the chance to open up our advantage when they led 3-1 in the soccer game. But they blew their chances and eventually lost the game 4-3. We managed to recapture the lead by taking the Badminton and Table Tennis games. But SIA responded by taking the Squash, Bowling, Billiards and Tennis games to win the annual event with an overall score of 5-3. The dinner cum trophy presentation was held at the SSC Grand Ballroom. Sports Chairman Krishan Kashyap addressed the participants. The event also gave the children an opportunity for interaction and bonding. Furthermore it forced them to exercise teamwork, time management and personal discipline. All participants were presented with a certificate and a souvenir collar pin, which they wore with pride. Grand Prix #4: 28 September Only a Club event but the competition was razor keen by CONDREY LIU The last Grand Prix of the year did not get off to the best of starts. To begin with, the starter’s siren malfunctioned after the first event, leaving us to figure out another way to start off the swimmers. But once the meet got underway, it was the swimmers that took centrestage, as should be the case. The 9-year old boys showed us why they are considered the most competitive age group. The 50m freestyle was won by Matthew Lim, with Nicholas Cheong just two hundredths of a second behind. Then Bertrand Cher outswim Matthew in the 100m backstroke and 200m freestyle, with less than two tenths of a second separating them in the later event. The girls advanced group saw Ashley Khoo, Coline StaesPolet and Esther Chan sharing the honours. Ashley won the first 50m freestyle ahead of Coline and Esther. In the 200m freestyle, Coline edged out Ashley to take first place by four-tenths of a second. Then it was Esther’s turn to show her mettle by touching the board first in the 100m backstroke ahead of Coline and Ashley. The overall percentage of personal best timings for this meet stood at a respectable 83.7%. While it is a relatively high percentage, the signs show that we are currently short of swimmers in the older age groups. Swimmers should step forward to race. It’s a shame for them to train hard for the year and not put their efforts to the test by racing.
