Hello Fellow RHASC Members,
February was the month of our Winter Beach Blast. I hope you were able to come because it was a great party! As always there was so much food. I have heard so many
people rave about how the food is the hit of our party and we always have enough. The
Entertainers were, well, fabulous entertainers. I believe we had more people dancing
this year that ever before.
We made a lot of effort this year to have more freedom to move about the room. Last
year there were many comments about the room being over crowded. This year we were
able to reduce some of the crowding by selling less tickets and still provide quality
entertainment and good times.
Phil Long was our DJ for the night and did a fabulous job. A great big thank you for
your help!
Debbie Brown, as always, was on top of everything. Debbie and her committee worked so
hard to put this together for our club. Since this is the big fundraiser for our annual
budget, it is important for all of us to make this party a success. This team works tirelessly to make sure that everything is in its place and ready to go. We appreciate their
hard work and tremendous effort to provide a good time.

There were several members of the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC) Board
at the party as well. This also helps to illustrate how big this event is viewed from outside of our club. We had shaggers from as far away as Atlanta, Orlando, and
Connecticut.
Our next party will be held on March 19th. I am looking forward to an old fashioned
Rock Hill Area Shag Club party. I know our membership worked hard at the Winter
Beach Blast, and I, for one, am looking forward to getting together with you and having
a party.
As always I would like to encourage you to come to our Friday night Meet and Greet
sessions. These parties are really picking up lately. We always have such a good time on
Friday nights and you really don’t want to miss out.

The February party was a blast… actually our Winter Beach Blast and man what a fantastic crowd! The Entertainers kept everyone hopping on the dance floor and a big
THANK YOU to Phil Long who served as the DJ and played wonderful music before
and after the band and during the breaks. I was out by the door prize table as our
guests started to leave and they all said it was a fantastic party and they had a blast.
Thanks to all of you that provided the food for the table – that was one of the things
that got mentioned often as they were leaving- just how wonderful the spread was.
Get ready to come out and enjoy activities in March:
March 4, 2016 - Friday Night Meet and Greet. Shag lessons will begin at 7:30 pm.

Our Thoughts and Prayers...
Please keep Tom Smythe’s sister, Sara Scott, in your thoughts and prayers. Sara, who is 93 years young, recently fell and had
to be taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Please remember Darlene Spoon who recently underwent eye surgery.
On February 24th we lost Deborah Jackson Shehan. She was a former member of the RHASC. Debbie had been struggling
for the last few months with some pretty serious health issues. Please lift her husband, John, her son, Scott, and her daughter,
Ashley, up in your prayers in the days ahead.

Butch and I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you for the thoughts, prayers, greeting cards, gift cards, visits, and
food you blessed us with during our traumatic experience with Butch’s
(Max’s) recent illness. An expected hospital stay of 7 days turned out to be
5 weeks hospital plus, then some home rehab, and we truly do not know
how we could have survived without our friends’ encouragement and support. It was a very frightening time for us, and it certainly humbled us letting us know that we certainly are not promised tomorrow. Butch is back at
work now and doing extremely well. Thinking back over this entire experience, I must say that it was also a very gratifying experience with all our
family, neighbors, friends, and co-workers being “at-the-ready”, assuring us
of their support and offers to do anything to help us in any possible way. It
is wonderful to have so much love and caring in our lives. Again, we would
like to say thanks and you will always be in our prayers.

WINTER BEACH BLAST
Thank you to everyone who attended the 7th Annual Winter Beach Blast. Once again, it was a huge success.
All the comments I have heard have been very positive. My committee and I worked very hard to iron out the
problems from last year. I think we did just that.
I did hear a few comments that some folks were a little upset that they were not able to have seats. For this, I am
truly sorry. Let me express, once again, that we cannot possibly seat everyone that attends this party. Even though
we did not quite "sell out" this year, we still had 368 people in attendance. We were able to seat about 290, with the
chairs around the outside of the room. That still leaves about 80 people without seats. Being the "host" club, we try
to accommodate our guests. There were plenty of folks willing to "share" their seats. So everyone should have been
able to sit for a while during the night. I truly hope, that as members, you do understand this. We do our best to seat
as many as possible. Thank you all for your understanding in this matter.
The food line went very fast this year. The new line formation and going down both sides of the food table made the
difference. Dean brought in the narrow tables, which made the traffic flow so much better. Everyone showed up and
worked very hard at all the stations. A lot of folks worked much more than their assigned time. This is the kind of
"teamwork" it takes to "host" a party of this size. The food was out of this world. As always, we wound up with
more than we needed. But remember, it is always better to have too much than not enough. Our food spread is
always the talk of the party. This was the second year we have had the "Door Prize" table. You all outdid
yourselves. We ended up with over (50) prizes. And might I add, they were all fantastic items. Thank you to
everyone who was so generous in making donations to make this part of our party possible. I think it is an added
feature that everyone enjoys. I must also say "thank you" to those who donated the liquor for the "Raffle Basket".
We had over ten different bottles of liquor. Tommy & Gail arranged it so creatively in the cube cooler. Our very
own Chris Davis was the lucky winner. We must all be sure to look him up at SOS!! Chris, we do expect a shooter
party. The proceeds from this will be "earmarked" for "The Hall of Fame Foundation". It will be added to the
amount that will be raised in June at the fundraiser party for HOFF.
Our band this year was THE ENTERTAINERS. What a fantastic job they did! They kept the dance floor full the
entire night. I would also like to add what a joy they were to work with - not demanding at all and very
accommodating. We will definitely invite them back again. Great Job!!
Our DJ for the night was our very own Friday Night DJ - Phil Long. He did a wonderful job during the band break,
as well as cranking the party up and winding it down. He took requests, did lots of line dance music, and kept the
dance floor full as well. Thank you so much, Phil, for donating your time for our event.
Once again, I want to say a very huge "THANK YOU" to my committee, who always goes way above and beyond to
make this party possible - Dennis Brown, Lauren McCauley, Debra Ledford, Marita Copeland, Maria Williams,
Terry Branch, Debbie Brown, Frankie McConnell, Chris Davis, Judy Baker, Dean Baker, and Tommy Davis. This is
the best group anyone could ever hope to work with. I could not do what I do without them. You are all the best!! I
must also say "thank you" to their spouses - Marty, Mike, Steve, Barry, and Gail. The hours that go into planning
this party months in advance is tremendous. Then comes Friday, where some of us spent hours setting up and
arranging tables to try to get the most seating possible. Back Friday night, to decorate. Thank you to those who
came out to help. Back Saturday morning, to put the final touches on everything. Then my committee was back at
4:00 to meet the band and be ready for food arrival. Then you have those faithful ones that hang on till the end and
help with the clean up and packing everything away and loading up cars. We had a large group this year to stay. In
closing, I truly appreciate everyone's help and gracious donations that made this party a success.
Thank you all for the privilege of serving as your Committee Chairman for this party for the last seven years. I was
very surprised and honored to be recognized and presented the plaque during the party as the "creator and chairman"
of this party. I love this party and I love this club. We are, by far, the best club around.

We are sending you this letter on behalf of the Junior Shag Dance Team, which is comprised of juniors from North and South
Carolina. Each one of them is working hard to spread Carolina Shag as far and as wide as possible with hopes of preserving the
dance and its traditions! In the efforts to help minimize the financial burden for each of their parents, we are seeking corporate
and personal sponsorships and/or donations to help absorb the costs associated with traveling, lodging, clothing, & food to
different events throughout the year. The Junior Shag Dance Team is now acting as a 501c Non Profit Organization and your
donation is tax deductible.
We would consider our dance, the Carolina Shag, as a dance with extremely deep roots in ideals once shared at the dinner table, a sub--culture that is self---sustaining and a lifestyle that once it has infected you is very hard to leave behind. Many friendships and long--lasting relationships are formed through our dance and sometimes the dance even bridges generational gaps. None is more evident
than when you enter an establishment and see young adolescents having fun and dancing with their parents and grandparents.
We would like to give you a little insight regarding the history of this team, both past and present. The Junior Shag Dance Team
was founded in 2008 by Brennar Goree and Autumn Jones. The 2016 Team is Choreographed and Directed by Brennar Goree and
Krystal Bravo, and Managed by Ashley and Tobitha Stewart.
We are in our 5th season with The Junior Shag Dance Team and we are starting to raise monies needed for The Junior Shag Dance
Team to travel to as many Shag Events possible to keep our dance alive!! Some of our big events this season will be the Nationals
Living Legends, USA Grand National Dance Championships, and the US Open! The Team’s Mission Statement is to “Spread
Carolina Shag dancing around the world and to preserve the concepts that separate it from the rest!”
Even though the economy is in dire shape nowadays, charitable gifts and donations to organizations, such as ours, will bring pure
joy to your eyes once you see how much our juniors love this dance. Just because our world these days is in the balance it doesn’t
mean we can’t still invest in things like this team that will ensure the future of things we love. Please be proactive and help the
group accomplish their goals. We will do our part and rest assured, if we were millionaires we would make it happen unilaterally.
☺ However, we can’t. Let us show the world how great our community is and let us get behind these kids, together! Any gifts or
donations will go 100% directly to the expenses of the Junior Shag Dance Team such as lodging, entry fees, wardrobe, meals, and

Hi Shagging Friends,
In a little over three weeks we will host the first ever Junior Cyclone event on March 18-20. It is designed to introduce shagging and
shag music to those under age 21, and to help the kids who already know how to shag to improve their dancing abilities.
We have already received well over 100 ticket orders and over half of those are for juniors, age 7-19. A few of the cities represented so
far include Charlotte, Chester, Concord, Cornelius, Dunn, Durham, Fort Mill, Gaffney, Gastonia, Kannapolis, Little River, Lynchburg,
Madison Heights, Martinez, Mooresville, North Myrtle Beach, North Augusta, Pineville, Raleigh, Rock Hill, Siler City, Simpsonville,
South Chesterfield and Stedman, just to name a few. And we are expecting a lot more orders, and sales at the door. This is truly going
to be an awesome event.
Do you have children or grandchildren who might enjoy this weekend event? Bring them! This could be the best $20 you will ever
spend on them!!!
