Emporium | autumn Essential luxuries for home, life & leisure Edited by Lynnette Peck Bateman For her a handle on style This season there is a return to classic handbags – such as the Brea GM by Louis Vuitton, shown here in Monogram Vernis leather. Available in four shades and inspired by the traditional doctor’s bag, it is large enough to carry a laptop. Made to last, the Brea GM will be around longer than just one autumn. Buy one in classic black or lipstick red to ensure it matches every outfit. Yes, we are back to black in the world of fashion – again – and you could arguably say, ‘black is the new black’. Of course the very wearable ‘camel’ shade is still a huge fashion colour story and has moved from taupe summer shift dresses to moltentoffee coloured winter capes, as seen at Celine, but dark-dark is more daring. One clothing brand are calling their new season pieces ‘Dark Nouveau’ and a new beauty range for autumn is called ‘Black Velvet Collection’. But there is a touch of colour there too, with red making a bold appearance. Think red and burgundy lipsticks from the ‘Vintage Christmas’ collection at Givenchy, silk and cashmere scarlet scarves at Liberty and red and black frocks at Prada and you have a modern take on 1940s style. This is all about nostalgia and a harking back to a time that is now perceived as more rose-tinted than ours. This summer there was a vintage festival for the first time called Vintage at Goodwood and popular singers such as Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera dressed in vintage-style. If a neutral palette is more your style then grey is all a go, too, and if you mix a grey silk evening dress from Suzannah with some grey pearls, a slash of red lipstick and throw on a black cape, you too can be the season’s fashion goddess. This is because of the dichotomy between the two arenas in which dinner jackets are worn. Work dos usually call for sober outfits, so an ideal jacket will be black with peak lapels, be double or single breasted according to preference, have matching grosgrain silk on the lapels (and down the seam of the trousers’ legs), have, in addition to the breast pocket, two jetted hip pockets (without flaps) and cloth-covered buttons. If you want to make an impression on private occasions, however, try a velvet smoking jacket. I’d suggest a shawl collar, again either double- or single-breasted. Claret red, bottle green, rich navy or even nearly azure blue will be eye-catching. Luckily the rest of the outfit needn’t change with the jacket. The only tie to wear is a proper grosgrain black silk bow, not least because clip-on ties can’t hang down either side of an open shirt collar after an energetic spell of dancing. The shirt should be in white cotton with a Marcella front and holes for shirt studs, but in winter a heavy cream silk shirt with a fly front is better; both should have soft collars and double cuffs. The trousers, which never have turn-ups, must be high enough to ensure no shirt fabric is visible beneath the jacket’s button when it’s done up – a low-cut waistcoat is a better guard against this than a cummerbund. The socks, which are ideally silk, must be long, black and fine – the spell of elegance cast by the dinner jacket will be broken if you flash pale hairy ankles between the top of your socks and the hem of your trousers when you sit down. Bear in mind that you’re going to be enjoying food, drink and dance in your suit; if you wear trousers with braces, the trousers’ waistband can be worn comfortably loose. Shoes should be highly polished black calf leather oxford lace-ups, ideally whole cut and with silk ribbons as laces. However, if you’re wearing a velvet jacket to a private party another dandyish touch is to wear black velvet Albert slippers, rather than shoes. Either way the required accessories are a cream silk pocket square, shirt studs and cufflinks, a simple watch and a beautiful woman.
