No 161860 $1 Youth Rally shows teens importance of fun with education By PAYTON TOWNS III Youth from seven different high schools were dancing and having fun while learning about what was waiting for them after they graduate from high school. Communities in Schools of Laurens County, along with the CSB of Middle Georgia, Suicide Prevention Coalition Dublin-Laurens and Sources of Strength were partners for the annual Living Loud conference held in the DuBose Porter Center at Oconee Fall Line Technical Center Thursday. Denise Forbes, CEO of the Community Mental Health Center of Middle Georgia, said they had a record number 411 students from Dublin High School, East Laurens High School, West Laurens High School, Moore Street School, Johnson County High School, Twiggs County High School and Montgomery County High School. "That's the most we have ever had here," Forbes said. Jackie Pittman Curtis, executive director of Communities in Schools, said they have been doing this event for eight years. When it comes to getting the students energized, there is no one better than Keith L. Brown, Curtis said. Brown, with the use of music and chants, gets the students excited about education. "We plan this (event) around his schedule," she said. "He can keep 400 children energized from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. He's been with us since the beginning." Brown has a big heart for this area. "This is where it started over 20 years ago," he said. "It's always a pleasure to come back and work with Communities in Schools and other agencies that impact the lives of young people and families. This is a highlight." He hopes those he talked to eight years ago are in college or are out making a difference in the community. "Hopefully they are leaders and are doing a great job now," Brown said. He said it's important to have fun with the students and watch them get excited. "It's a blessing," Brown said. "This is a release for me. When you can live and love your purpose, it doesn't feel like work." Curtis said they had speakers tell the students about financial aid and their first year of college experience. "Two former students came back and told them about their freshmen years and what they can expect," Curtis said. Just before lunch, a former student gave a testimony about something that had happened to her. "Sometimes things happen that we can learn from later," the young woman said. "We are all human and mistakes happen." A few years ago, the woman went to the Laurens County Jail for drinking and driving. She recalled not wanting to look at her mother when they got to the scene just before she was taken to jail. "Jail is never a place you want to be," the woman said. "I had to stand before a judge. … I stepped up and took responsibility for my actions." Every once in a while he reached up to scratch his face. By PAYTON TOWNS III He admitted to not knowing what he was going to say. As the rain hit heavily against the top of the building, Bob, who was wearing an orange jump suit, began to talk about how he ended up in jail. According to Bob, there is a big meth problem in Dublin and Laurens County. "There are a lot of folks in Dublin and all over the world who need help from it," Bob said. At the age of 15, he started using meth. What he doesn't know is this is the exact age when former addict Adrian started using the same drug. Adrian, unlike Bob, isn't in jail. He's been arrested but is on the path to recovery. Taking that same path is Patrick. Unlike these other men, he started using meth when he was 29. Bob, Adrian and Patrick tell different stories about how they got started. Some have different experiences. What they all share are stories about the pain and hurt they put their families through as they used this horrible drug. All of them have come to realize this: meth will ruin a person's life. Sheriff: Meth has progressed in Laurens County By PAYTON TOWNS III A recovering Methamphetamine user called it something from the devil while another former user called it a disease. A man in jail said meth is a big problem all across the world, and especially, here in Laurens County. Sheriff Bill Harrell knows all about that. "It has progressed," Harrell said. "The drug of choice at one time was cocaine and then it went to prescription pills. We had always heard about meth and what it does to the body." Harrell never wanted to see meth in Laurens County. "We knew it was going to be bad," he said. "We have been dreading this for years. I know within the last 16 months, we've seen a big peak in it. We try to make arrests. You just can't believe stuff like this is going on in our community. … It's a travesty. I just don't know why people would do this." Methamphetamine, commonly known as "meth" or "crystal meth" is a highly addictive man-made stimulant drug that is extraordinarily dangerous. It is See SHERIFF page 3a Adrian is 27-year-old and has been using meth for 12 years since age 15. "I started using meth because I was trying different experiences," Adrian said. "Nothing good comes out of it. One day it will control your life...This has destroyed people - families." It took Adrian eight years to realize what meth was doing to him. "I thought I had control over it," he said. "At first, I was what they would call a control user. Then it was never an option. Drugs would come before my children. The drugs came first. It came before anything else. It's a disease that you have. When you get into it, you would go to any means necessary to get it." Adrian said there's only three places where people on meth will end up: jail, an institution or the grave. In seven years, he was arrested 15 times for meth. "That drug will make you do things," Adrian said. "It will ruin your life...I've got a kid. She doesn't have a daddy because of meth." Missing his family is why Adrian decided to seek help. "I had been away from my family so long," he said. "I came to realize that a life of drugs is not what I wanted. I'm choosing a different life. (Meth) took me away from my family and my God." Patrick is 33-years-old and had been on meth for four years. House ATLANTA (AP) — The Georgia House has rejected a bill preventing cities from banning plastic bags. The House's 67-85 vote on Friday makes the bill's future uncertain. The Senate approved an earlier version. Officials in several Georgia cities have considered banning plastic bags within their limits, including coastal Tybee Island where supporters argue that sea turtles sometimes mistake them for food. Rep. Tom McCall, who carried the bill in the House, says local bans will create confusion and add costs to businesses while Rep. Trey Kelley criticized supporters as "extreme environmentalists." Other Republicans who spoke against the bill called it a state overreach. Deal signs order requiring readiness for marijuana law ATLANTA (AP) — In an emotional ceremony in his Capitol office, Gov. Nathan Deal signed an executive order Friday ordering state agencies to start preparations now for the enactment the state's medical marijuana bill. Deal said Friday he'll sign it into law soon after the current legislative session ends April 2 to avoid possible procedural conflicts with other pieces of legislation. He said the bill, sponsored by Rep. Allen Peake, R-Macon, will allow the use of cannabis oil for treatment of seizure disorders, cancer, Lou Gehrig's disease, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, mitochondrial disease, Parkinson's and sickle cell anemia. The news conference's mood swung from gleeful to sad, especially when Mike Hopkins of Covington, who moved his family to Colorado last fall so his children could be treated with cannabis oil, stood to express gratitude that the bill is soon to become law. Two have died. "Honestly, I have not had a chance to grieve my children," he said, choking up. The family has two children left, including one who has seizures like those that killed two siblings. Janea Cox, mother of Haleigh, 5, who has intractable epilepsy and has been living for months in Colorado while husband Brian, a Johns Creek firefighter, stayed here, said she'll now move back to their Smyrna home. Patrick didn't understand the dangers of what he was getting himself into. "When I started, all I wanted to do was get high," Patrick said. "That's all that mattered." At one time, he had a beautiful wife, nice job and children. Meth took that away. "I started using meth and it all slipped away," Patrick said. "I saw it go one piece at a time. I saw my boat, house, kids and wife go away...They were telling me to get help. For a long time, I thought I had it under control." Patrick was arrested four times, twice for theft by taking. Both of those thefts were in order for him to get money to buy more meth. "I wasn't thinking about who I was hurting at the moment (of the thefts)," Patrick said. "I was sick." He eventually hit rock bottom. He stopped but then relapsed and had nowhere to go and had nothing to live for. "I realized that I needed help," Patrick said. "I felt like I didn't." He has been clean for almost two months. His faith is playing a big part in staying that way. "I looked for God," Patrick said. "My family offered me tough love. They wouldn't let me (come) home...Meth will wreck your life, home and family. Stay away from it." Bob is 35-years-old and had been using meth for two decades. Using meth began when he was getting drunk, hanging out with an older crowd. The next night, Bob learned how to cook it. He was 15-years-old. "Man, the dangers (of meth) are unreal," Bob said. "I've been to places and seen (stuff) that is unreal. People murdered and people shot. I've been shot at, robbed and slept in the streets. Right before I got locked up, I wanted to get out of it. "I put my body through h---, not including my family," Bob said. "It's hard losing your family. It's like no other thing." Bob has been arrested twice. Once he got help with the Residential Substance Abuse Treatment, which is offered in the state prison system. "RSAT helped me a lot," he said. "When I got out of there, I didn't do any followup. When I got out, I fell back into the same class of people. I was out of work and doing that was easy money. I'm not going to sleep on the street if I can make money easy." Bob considers himself lucky. "My mind is still in tact," he said. "I have pretty teeth and my family will still be there for me. I have a lot of mending to do though." Many things about meth have bothered Bob. At one time he was making money off it. "People were drawn to me in that lifestyle," Bob said. "I'd make them laugh. I saw how I could use these people so that I would be safe." He paused before talking about several regrets which brings him to tears. "I have a friend who had never seen drugs until he met me," Bob said. "Now he's in prison for murder. (Meth) turned him. I've never seen a change like that. It just took his life over." He was asked what he would do if he could go back in time and talk to his 15-year-old self. "I have destroyed and ruined a lot of lives," Bob said. "If I could go back, knowing now what I didn't know then, I would probably kill myself. I made a lot of kids hurt. I hurt them bad, and it's my fault. It eats at me all the time. If I knew now, then, it would be over. I was a walking disaster. The Lord has changed my life. He took meth from me. I ain't going back. I have already gotten my help. I'm going to definitely follow up." Because all he knows is the wrong crowd. "That life is H---," Bob said. "The coolness and materialism isn't worth it...I should be in prison for a long time from what I've done. I've pushed it on kids. There are a lot of things that meth has taken from me. I messed up a lot of children's lives. They'll probably go through H--- because of me." There is hope for those who want it Bob has promised to seek help when he gets out. It may be the same help and path to recovery that Adrian and Patrick are currently on. Both Adrian and Patrick have called meth "a disease." "In 10 years of doing meth, I didn't know about being clean until now," Adrian said. "I was unaware that it's a disease. If you don't use drugs, you are blessed." Now is the time for parents and educators to talk to their children about drugs, especially meth. "(Meth) is the devil," Patrick said. "I would tell people to stay away from it. Parents need to talk to their kids about it. Maybe it will stop them from going down the same road I did." The path to recovery isn't easy. "There is help but it'll be tough," Patrick said. "It's a hard road to hoe. They have to be ready and willing. They have to have an open heart. I couldn't do this until I was ready." Adrian had a message for those who are using meth. "There is hope," he said. "Recovery is possible. It's not easy and it will take a lot of work. You've got to truly want it." Bob wants to help others too. Like Adrian and Patrick, he would tell others not to touch it. "Meth is not a joke," he said. "I saw people on it who thought they could fly. This is killing people and messing their minds up. I saw someone who wanted to cut her head because she thought she had bugs in her hair. Meth is a dangerous drug. I believe they should stop selling everything you can make it with. It is awful. And this town is ate up with it. I would not turn this on to anyone, unless they want to buy a casket. Because they are going to die." Many users encountered by the sheriff’s office prefer injections into the veins. To the user, it often brings hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, delusions, extreme paranoia and violent behavior. Unlike cocaine, the effects of a single dosage may last for days. Meth combines the hyperactivity of cocaine with the delusions of LSD. It has been described as one of the world’s most dangerous drugs. Public knowledge of this drug does not adequately reflect the damage meth brings to individuals and communities. It is extremely harmful and users are quickly hooked. "When folks go to shooting or cooking it, that's what concerns me," Harrell said. "I don't know how I could sell something like (meth) to someone knowing what it's going to do to them. Folks don't realize how serious it is. So many have lost their lives while taking it. Some have moved into a house where a former meth lab was and then they and their children start getting sick. If they aren't able to get it (cleaned) like they need to, the whole house may need to be torn down." Long-term users tend to develop skin irritations, loss of teeth, heart disease and brain damage. Stroke and death are real possibilities. Harrell has seen the booking photos of those who use meth. "It ages people so bad," Harrell said. "They lose their teeth and everything else. They don't even look like themselves anymore. You know it's got to be killing the families." For the community, it destroys many people and their ability to contribute. Young adult users may raise their children in situations of neglect and abandonment, often living only for the drug. While meth is relatively cheap in comparison to other illicit drugs, especially when a single use may keep the user high for days, meth addicts often commit thefts, burglaries, or robberies or sell meth to support their own addiction. "They are going to get their money one way of the other," Harrell said. "And they don't care how it's done." — Sheriff Bill Harrell In recent years, legislative action has greatly diminished the opportunity for violators to “cook” their own meth. This was accomplished through restrictions complicating the procurement of ephedrine and pseudoephedrine, essential ingredients in home-cooked formulas. Cooking with lithium from batteries, ether from aerosol cans, ethyl alcohol from gasoline additives, and other poisonous precursors created extreme risks to anyone. "It's bad to say that a group of people will put something like that into their system to reach a high," Harrell said. "We are trying to make a dent in it in Laurens County or at least slow it down." People make clandestine meth lab environment and have contaminated homes, cars, and motel rooms, as well as outdoor locations. "Who knows if the motel room you just rented housed a meth lab," Harrell said. "There was a deputy in North Georgia. They had a mobile meth lab and he was inventorying the vehicle. When the car went on the rollback, some of the chemicals made contact, he inhaled it and he was put into a coma for three or four weeks." In the past, specially trained Laurens County deputies assigned to dismantle meth labs wore protective equipment and donned heavy breathing apparatus to guard against poisonous gas and chemicals found at lab sites. Additionally, dismantled labs are treated as hazardous material, requiring expensive disposal of all components and contaminated soil. "Folks don't realize how expensive it is to do away with a meth lab," Harrell said. "Usually on the average, a small lab may be $1,000. The DEA used to give money to the state of Georgia to send a team to get the stuff and do away with it. The federal government has cut that out. It reverts back to the local taxpayers to have to pay for it. It's a nightmare." Meth can lead to more tragic events such as murder. "When you read up on it, you see how it effects folks in different ways," Harrell said. "They act wild and you just don't know what it's going to cause them to do." The Laurens County Sheriff’s Office is asking for citizen involvement in fighting the alarming increase in methamphetamine trafficking and addiction confronting the community. The sheriff’s office asks that anyone with direct knowledge or even suspicion of violations contact the drug hotline at 478–272-8990. Laurens County deputies are seeing a dramatic increase in drug intelligence related to meth trafficking and have made numerous arrests for possession/sale of meth throughout the county. Frequently, the sheriff’s office receives calls from family members of users who are addicted to methamphetamine and need assistance. Many of these addicts are young adults who became addicted and turned to crime to support their addiction. "If anyone has information about making or selling meth or other drugs, they need to get in touch with us," Harrell said. Do your research on them before buying one or ask people who have a pet bunny. I can't wait to see more Braves games on TV. They may be able to shock people and have a better season than many believe. After all, not many people believed the Braves would be good in 1991 and we remember what happened that year, don't we? People need to make their plans to go to church this Sunday and leave all your problems with God. There are too many senseless wrecks in this area. People have to start paying attention to the road and put down those handheld devices called cell phones. What's more important - that call or getting home safely? "Every set back, is a set up for a comeback," he said. "We've always said if you fall, land on your back. If you can look up, then you can get up. She landed on her back. She failed at somethings, but she wasn't a failure. And that's a key. The fact that she had the courage to come back and stand in front of her peers, is exceptional." After lunch, the students got to attend a college fair where there were 20 colleges and university officials waiting to hand out information. "That's the purpose of this event," Curtis said. "We want to let them know that college is attainable for everyone. We want them to know about going to college when they are sophomores and juniors. They have to know the importance of their grade point average and other things. This plants that seed early on." Sluggers who came of age in the days of 50, 60 and 70 home-run seasons have been forced to recalibrate what's a successful power season. And 30 is the new 40. "Oh yeah, absolutely," said Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant, perhaps the best power-hitting prospect in the game. "I mean I grew up watching Barry Bonds hit 73 home runs and now guys are talking about 30's good." Home runs have hit their lowest rate in more than two decades. Only 11 players reached the 30-homer mark last season, the fewest in a full season since 1992, when there were four fewer teams, no interleague play and Fay Vincent was still commissioner. The days of bulked-up sluggers like Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa topping 60 home runs in a season like they did six times from 19982001 are going, going, and gone. "I remember when guys hit 50 and 60 a year," said Houston first baseman Chris Carter, who tied for second in the majors last season with 37 homers. "Then they stopped doing it, there were reasons for that. But I'd like to think it's still attainable — look what Chris Davis did a couple of years ago. Why set the bar so low at 30? I'd like to think you could hit more than that." There are plenty of reasons for baseball's power outage, with testing for steroids getting the most attention. Testing was agreed to on a survey basis with no punishments in 2003 and penalties began the following year. Testing has become more rigorous and penalties more harsh over the years. Amphetamines were also banned before the 2006 season, affecting every day hitters trying to get through the grind of a 162-game season more than starting pitchers who go every five days. Home runs have dropped in frequency in that same time and only Davis in 2013 and Jose Bautista in 2010 have reached 50 in the past five seasons. Davis was suspended for amphetamine use last season. "You had the stretch in the PED era where everything was inflated, everybody in the lineup See HOMERS page 2b Rec department opens baseball season The Dublin-Laurens County Recreation Authority kicked off its 2015 baseball season Thursday with a handful of games in the Bantam 7 League. (Photos by Rodney Manley) Georgia’s 3 QB contenders starting over ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — The challenge of learning new offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer’s playbook has evened Georgia’s three-man quarterback competition. Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta and Jacob Park have been given equal chances to win the job in spring practice. The three are trading days with the starters as Schottenheimer installs his offense. Schottenheimer, the former St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator, said when hired in January he would try to simplify the transition by saving as much terminology as possible from Georgia’s old offense. Instead, the three quarterbacks say they feel they are starting over. Ramsey was the top backup to 2014 senior starter Hutson Mason. Ramsey played in eight games and under normal conditions would have had a big advantage in the competition. That changed when former offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Mike Bobo was hired as Colorado State’s coach. “It’s back to square one,” Ramsey said, adding the change came just as he felt he had learned Bobo’s offense. “I had just felt comfortable with the playbook right when Bobo left,” Ramsey said. “I was like ‘Yes, I’ve got it.’ Sure enough, I’m into a new system.” Ramsey said learning the new terminology is “a huge thing” in the quarterback derby. The change from Bobo to Schottenheimer could be good for Park, who impressed teammates as last year’s scout-team quarterback. Instead of starting spring behind Ramsey and Bauta, Park is taking snaps with the first-team offense every third day. Asked what has changed from last season, when he was redshirted as a freshman, Park said “Knowing I’ve got a shot.” Park (6-4, 202) earned compliments last year with his skills as a runner on the scout team, when he regularly played against the defensive starters. Outside linebacker Jordan Jenkins described Park as “a shifty cat” due to his quickness. Added Jenkins: “I’d definitely say he’s the fastest” of the quarterbacks. Park said he was in survival mode on the scout team. “I didn’t really have good protection on the scout team last year,” Park said. “I didn’t really trust my protection and so I tended to scramble out of the pocket a lot.” Park said his goal this spring is to prove he can play under control in the pocket and hold his own in comparisons with Ramsey and Bauta as a passer. “That’s definitely been my biggest emphasis, sitting in the pocket,” Park said. “That’s what I’ve been working on the most.” Added Park: “Sitting in the pocket and throwing the ball is the name of the game. That’s what we’re all trying to do. “ Park also opened eyes with his leadership last year. “I just like playing the game,” he said. “I’ve got a lot of passion for what I do. People tend to follow people that get excited and want to play.” Coach Mark Richt may not name a starter this spring. Based on the current rotation, Ramsey is scheduled to take his turn with the first-team offense in the Bulldogs’ first scrimmage on Saturday. Ramsey (6-3, 216), a sophomore known for his strong arm, completed 24 of 39 passes for 333 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions last year. Bauta (6-3, 218) played in three games last season, com- AP photo QuartErBaCk CoMpEtition uGa coach Mark richt watches redshirt freshman Jacob park pleting 4 of 5 passes for 48 yards. As a junior, he has the most years in the program of the three. “I just look at it like I’m a freshman learning a whole new playbook,” Bauta said. “We’re all starting from zero.” Grand slam, back-to-back jacks power MS Crusaders to sweep Special photo Chance Blum connects for a three-run Crusader homer Special to The Courier Herald The Trinity Middle School Crusaders unleashed a power display in their doubleheader with Robert Toombs, hitting five home runs including back-to-back homers and a grand slam in a 9-1 and 22-2 sweep. In Game 1’s first inning, Blake Purvis and Carson Hall gave fans a sample of what they were going to see all day when they went back to back with towering home runs to put the middle-schoolers up stay for the rest of the day. In the second inning, Caelan Williams reached on a single, stole second and took third base on a passed ball. David Coleman, who was 8 for 8 in the two games, drove in Williams with his second single. Coleman scored on a single by Purvis. Williams later drove in Chance Blum for the only score in the third. Up 5-0 in the fourth inning, the Crusaders unleashed a fury sending nine batters to the plate. The big inning was highlighted by a linedrive, three-run homer by centerfielder Chance Blum, driving in Davis Skeeters and Trey Miller. Walker Payne went the distance on the mound, striking out five and giving up only three hits. In the second game, Trinity took care of Robert Toombs in three innings. The Crusaders collected 22 runs on 22 hits, including another home run off the bat of Carson Hall, his second on the day, and a grand slam from Josh Price, his second on the season. David Coleman led the attack, going 4 for 4 and scoring four runs. Price added two singles in addition to his four-run slammer and scored four runs on the day. Hudson Rousell came up big going, 3 for 3 and scoring three times. In addition to Hall’s homer, he also added a double and scored three runs. Walker Payne added two hits and scored four runs. Grant Grosch doubled, single and drove in a run, while Jake Walker doubled, singled, drove in a run and scored. Jalon Price added a single, and Ben Butler singled, doubled and scored a run. David Coleman pitched two innings, striking out four and giving up only one hit. Trey Miller pitched the third inning, taking down Robert Toombs, three up, three down. The Courier Herald Saturday, March 28, 2015/Dublin, Ga/Page 2b NCaa: Bo doesn’t like change; can irish slay goliath? Bo Ryan is no fan of change. He said so himself answering the question — "What's the most important change your team needs to make here?" — as he left the locker room to start the second half, down by two to North Carolina in Thursday's Sweet 16 matchup. Wisconsin was shooting just 37 percent, almost 30 points lower than the pass-completion percentage posted last season by that other icon of the Badger state, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who was in the stands with girlfriend Olivia Munn in LA. "Well, we don't need to change here," Ryan practically growled in response to sideline reporter Rachel Nichols. "We just have to play better." Coaches have been saying that since the dawn of time. Ryan wasn't around then, but he's only changed so much in his 67 years. He still recruits leftovers, which means his players often stick around four years and learn plenty. His teams still play manto-man defense and the motion offense he devised back in his days at nearby WisconsinPlatteville, called the Swing, in which all five positions are interchangeable. Arizona, their next opponent in a much-anticipated rematch of last season's Elite Eight showdown, knows that isn't likely to change, either. "They've seen the good runs. So for all the things Bo knows, panicking early is not among them. WAKING UP THE ECHOES: Notre Dame has a long and storied tradition. Just not in basketball — though the Fighting Irish have demonstrated a knack for playing David and knocking off Goliath No. 1 teams. They've done it eight times, including bookend wins that began and ended UCLA's 88-game winning streak in the 1970s. Whether that's worth much against Kentucky in the regional final remains to be seen. Given the opportunity to summon up just one thing from their past, however, chances are good Notre Dame would choose to repeat its sizzling shooting numbers from Thursday's win over Wichita State. The Irish shot 75 percent for the second half, 56 for the game and 47 from 3-point range for the game. The Shockers took their only lead of the game with 16:37 to go, then got buried under an avalanche. Or as Wichita State coach Gregg Marshall put it: "I've never seen a 1-point lead get out of hand so quickly." THROW THE BOOK OUT: West Virginia's Bob Huggins isn't just another sideline modelcoach in a windbreaker. He's also an author. The smart money opined the best way to beat Kentucky — if one even exists — could be relentless defensive pressure all over the floor. And as it happens, Huggins has cranked out two books on that very subject. Asked about them a day before the game in Cleveland, he conceded, "That was a long time ago; honestly, I don't remember what I wrote." The still-perfect Wildcats apparently haven't read it, either. They shredded the Mountaineers' press time and again en route to a 78-39 snoozer. IT'S BETTER IN THE BAHAMAS: Or so the advertising slogan goes. Yet eight minutes into the second half, it was the Tar Heels bossing the game. They built their biggest lead at 53-46, on the same play that ended with Kaminsky taking an inadvertent slap to the face. The Badgers, meanwhile, were still shooting poorly, hovering around 40 per- cent. Then Josh Gasser made a crucial (if questionable) strip to ignite a 6-0 Wisconsin run and backup Zak Showalter did the same while starting another 9-0 surge around the five-minute. The Badgers sewed up the 79-72 win with good (in this case, perfect 8-for-8) free-throw shooting, which along with few turnovers SOCCer 9:30 p.m. ESPN2 — Men's national teams, exhibition, Mexico vs. Ecuador, at Los Angeles WOMeN'S COLLege BaSKeTBaLL Noon ESPN — NCAA Tournament, regional semifinal, teams TBD, at Albany, N.Y. 2:30 p.m. ESPN — NCAA Tournament, regional semifinal, teams TBD, at Albany, N.Y. 4:30 p.m. ESPN — NCAA Tournament, regional semifinal, teams TBD, at Spokane, Wash. 7 p.m. ESPN — NCAA Tournament, regional semifinal, teams TBD, at Spokane, Wash. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have optioned outfielder Eury Perez and two other players to Triple-A Gwinnett. After being acquired off waivers from the New York Yankees, the speedy Perez was thought to have a shot at contending for playing time in center field. But even after an injury kept Melvin Upton Jr. out for all of spring training, the 24-year-old Perez didn't do enough to earn a spot on the team. Eric Young Jr. is expected to open the season in center. The Braves also optioned a pair of young pitchers, left-hander Manny Banuelos and right-hander Williams Perez. Atlanta now has 40 players in its major league camp. Change to extra points likely for NFL PHOENIX (AP) — Spice it up. The NFL's dullest play, the extra point, appears to be headed for some changes, perhaps significant ones, for the 2015 season. While team owners didn't vote on any extrapoint proposals, there was so much discussion and interest in potential changes that the issue will be a main focal point for the next set of league meetings in May. "There's a clear movement to wanting to change and change it this year," said Rich McKay, co-chairman of the competition committee and president of the Falcons. McKay's committee will "develop alternatives and be ready for a potential vote" in two months in San Francisco. Among the possibilities are moving the line of scrimmage back for PAT kicks; placing the ball on the 1½-yard line for a 2-point conversion; elimi- nating the PAT kicks entirely, requiring teams to run a play from scrimmage; and allowing the defense to score, as in college football, if the ball is turned over on a 2-point try. McKay described the discussions as "lively, with lots of ideas ... it's time to make this a football play." "A couple coaches said they favor just lining up on the 2 and going for the 2-point play," he said. "Or move the ball to the 1 1-2 for two points, or kick from the 15 for one, your choice." The league experimented with extra-point kicks from a longer distance last preseason. Currently, the line of scrimmage for both an extra point and 2-point conversion try is the 2-yard line. Voted down as the meetings concluded this week was Chicago's proposal that each team get a possession in overtime regardless of what happens on the first series. Homers Continued from 1a was hitting a lot of home runs, one through nine," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "But then slowly when that changed and when guys are getting off the stuff, then it kind of goes back to old-time baseball." But drug testing is far from the only reason that teams combined for just 0.86 home runs per game last season, the lowest rate in the big leagues since 1992. That's down more than 25 percent from the peak of 1.17 homers per game back in 2000 when 16 players reached the 40-homer mark. Umpires are calling more low strikes, contributing to players over the past two seasons hitting the highest percentage of grounders on record to at least 1987. More power arms in the bullpen also contribute. Teams regularly are stocked with relievers capable of throwing fastballs that approach, or even top, 100 mph. With the stigma of striking out long gone, fewer balls than ever are being put into play. And those in play aren't traveling quite as far. Last season, 10.3 percent of fly balls went for home runs, down from 11.7 percent in 2000. That right there leads to about 20 fewer home runs per team in a season and makes reaching 40 or 50 a much taller task. "You don't need 45 and 120 anymore to be considered a great year," Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said. "Pitching is so much better and the hitting as a whole hasn't kept up with the pitching. The defensive shifts have stopped some of the hitting. And the hitters, if you keep doing what you're doing, you're going to keep getting what you're getting." Home run totals for the game's biggest sluggers are going back to the level they were when Schmidt was the game's most feared power-hitter in the 1970s and 80s. Schmidt led the league in homers eight times on the way to hitting 548, and in only two of those seasons did he reach 40. Review: 'Bloodborne' a punishing trek through a haunted city on PS4 By The Associated Press There's something masochistic about video gamers. Even if you're playing an innocuous-looking game like "Pac-Man," you will be killed dozens of times before you get any good. "Bloodborne" (Sony, for the PlayStation 4, $59.99) doesn't waste any time getting to the hard stuff. Almost immediately after it starts, you get eaten by a werewolf. Sure, you get reincarnated and armed with a couple of flimsy weapons, but if you aren't prepared to die — over and over and over — you won't get very far. "Bloodborne" is the latest torture device from evil genius Hidetaka Miyazaki and his Tokyobased studio, From Software. Starting with 2009's "Demon's Souls," Miyazaki and company have developed a reputation as the cruelest game designers in the world. If you relished the challenge of their "Souls" adventures, you'll love "Bloodborne." If you hated those games — well, their new ordeal won't change your mind. Once you get past that werewolf, you'll find yourself in a sprawling city called Yharnam, where majestic Gothic towers loom over gore-drenched streets. A nasty illness has overcome most of the populace, and the few remaining humans seem to hold you responsible. Those survivors are relatively easy to dispatch, as long as you don't let them gang up on you. It's the creatures that have mutated — bloodthirsty lycanthropes, sledgehammer-wielding behemoths — that will send you screaming into the afterlife. You're initially armed with two This photo provided by Sony shows a scene from the video game "Bloodborne" (for PlayStation 4, $59.99), in which a hunter battles a mutated tree creature in a haunted Gothic city. (AP Photo/Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC) devices: a melee weapon that can be extended for longer-range attacks and a firearm that seems almost comically ineffective. Gamers who are used to cutting a swath through hapless enemies will lose quickly. You need to approach each encounter cautiously and learn to depend on your "dodge" button. Eventually, you get used to the attack-dodge-attack rhythm needed to defeat most of Yharnam's creatures — until you stumble upon one of the game's vicious boss battles. Those guys, like the ax-wielding lunatic Father Gascoigne and the treesized Cleric Beast, are less predictable, and you'll need some trial and error before you can figure out their attacks. Even then, the bosses typically transform into something even nastier midbattle, requiring an entirely different strategy. If you lose, you get sent back to your last game save, at which point you have to slog your way back through the horde of lesser enemies you've already defeated and make your way back. Here's the spot where many players will slam down their controllers in frustration — not at losing a boss battle, but at having to retrace all the tedious steps that led up to that fight. From Software demands much of its players, including an obsessive level of patience. The studio has built an impressive cult audience for its brand of abuse, but if you're the type of person who plays a game to relax and unwind, "Bloodborne" is not for you. I admire its uncompromising vision — but I don't particularly like it. Two stars out of four. Review: Van Morrison breaks mold in diverse duets album By The Associated Press The duets format can be a lazy way to go, a predictable romp that showcases familiar old songs. Not so with Van Morrison's new collection "Duets: Re-Working the Catalogue" which skips obvious hits like "Moondance" and "Brown-Eyed Girl" for overlooked, sometimes eccentric tracks from memorable albums like "The Healing Game" and "A Period of Transition." The result is a warm, refreshing look at the stunning breadth of Morrison's poetic compositions, dating back nearly five decades. It's all here: The devotion to American rhythm and blues roots, the moody introspection, the search for transcendence. There is no particular concept, no chronological tale, but the music is unified by his fierce vision, and set off by his magnificent voice (untrammeled by time) and some tasty horn work. The choice of collaborators is revealing: Mavis Staples, with her golden voice and long family history; jazz singer Gregory Porter (who finally makes some of the mumbled lyrics to the exuberant "The Eternal Kansas City" intelligible); and Taj Mahal, who seems to nail "How Can A Poor Boy" on the very first take. Their easy camaraderie makes one miss the late John Lee Hooker, who teamed with Morrison for some of the finest duets of their respective careers. Morrison also includes some of the early English rockers who were on the way up when he first surfaced in the mid-'60s. Chris Farlowe, who has joined Morrison on stage at times, teams up with him on "Born To Sing" and former bandmate Georgie Fame duets on "Get On With the Show." P.J. Proby makes a surprise, slightly selfmocking appearance in "Whatever Happened to P.J. Proby", a nostalgic homage to the early days. Some of the songs may send fans back to the original albums, particularly "Streets of Arklow," a cut from Morrison's brilliant, Irishtinged "Veedon Fleece" presented here in tandem with Mick Hucknall. There's plenty to hear, and there's plenty more hidden away in Morrison's impressive archives. The Courier Herald Saturday, March 28, 2015/Dublin, Ga/Page 2c Review: 'Get Hard' plays with stereotypes with mixed success By The Associated Press While the stereotypes in "Get Hard" may be gross exaggerations, its characters live in the real world: A place where the chasm between rich and poor is vast and growing; where black men are disproportionately jailed and whitecollar criminals often evade punishment. In this comedy from firsttime director Etan Cohen, James (Will Ferrell) is a Los Angeles millionaire hedgefund investor whose life of indulgence and ignorance is interrupted by a surprise prison sentence for fraud. He turns to the guy who runs the company car wash, Darnell (Kevin Hart) — apparently the only black person he has ever met — and asks for help to prepare for 10 years in maximum security. Darnell has no jail experience, but he agrees because he needs money to buy a home in a better school district for his little girl. When Darnell's wife, Rita (Edwina Findley Dickerson) — the film's only voice of reason — asks what he did to give the impression he had a criminal record, he replies, "I was being black." Darnell's pre-jail prep class includes transforming his student's Bel-Air mansion into a pretend prison, the household staff gleefully becoming its guards. Lessons include getting James in shape, teaching him how to fight and encouraging him to practice oral sex on men. The first yields some laughs as the 6-foot-3 Ferrell uses the diminutive Hart as a barbell. But forced sex isn't funny, no matter who's doing the forcing or the gender of the parties involved. "Get Hard" traffics in other crude humor involving more than one look at Farrell's naked tush and a tiring amount of puns on the film's title. Darnell knows one real excon, his cousin Russell (an ultra-charismatic Tip "T.I." Harris), whom he turns to for actual help for James behind bars. James hits it off with Russell and his gangster pals when he shows them how they can "liquidate two bricks of cocaine" into hedge funds to make more money. "Wall Street, man. Those are the real criminals," one Continued from 1c In this image released by Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Kevin Hart, left, and Will Ferrell appear in a scene from "Get Hard." (AP Photo/Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., Patti Perret) gangster says. Right. This is supposed to be a parody of the One Percent. The film is guilty of occasionally underlining its jokes like this. James even uses the phrase "teachable moment" after a heated racial encounter — and not ironically. Stars and producers of "Get Hard" defended the film after its premiere at South by Southwest last week, where some viewers and critics called it racist and homophobic. So when does satire become an expression of the very sentiment it hopes to ridicule? James' initial bias against blacks is overt. He's afraid of Darnell when they first meet, and openly assumes he has been to jail because of his race, citing the statistical likelihood. That can work as satire. But when Darnell misses all of James' literary references, is that satire, or is it racist and classist? James has two female love interests, one white and one black. The black woman does more twerking than speaking on screen. Does that satirize a racist and sexist stereotype, or reinforce it? Jones ney's Bob Iger at a shareholders meeting in San Francisco earlier this month. Gareth Edwards ("Godzilla) will begin directing this summer. The movie is scheduled for a Dec. 16, 2016, release. Jones, 31, said she has had "a fantastic, fantastic few months." She was nominated for a best-actress Oscar for her role as Jane Hawking in "The Theory of Everything," and she says all the women nominated in that category supported each other. "It felt very uncompetitive which was really nice," she said. "It felt like we were all supporting each other." (Julianne Moore won for "Still Alice.") "Along the way you just bump into the same people," Jones said of the awards show circuit. "And for all the women in the category we all became really good friends by the end of it. You'd be like, 'Hey, how are you?' I did feel like there was a lot of camaraderie between us which was FINANCING AVAILABLE really nice." She said it is also nice doing publicity for other projects. "I had a fantastic time with ('The Theory of Everything') and it was a very, very special project to be a part of so I didn't mind speaking about it endlessly, but I do have to say it's nice to be talking about something else. Definitely." Her next film, "True Story," starring James Franco and Jonah Hill, is a true crime drama. It will be in theaters April 17. She's completed the thriller "Autobahn" with Nicholas Holt and a drama "The Monster Calls" with Liam Neeson. Jones will also co-star with Tom Hanks in the "Da Vinci Code" sequel, "Inferno," directed by Ron Howard. DUBLIN HEMATOLOGY & ONCOLOGY CARE, P.C. Farid U. The film stays afloat on the goofy charm of its two leads, a great soundtrack with music from Nicki Minaj, T.I. and The Pharcyde, and an undercurrent of truth. Los Angeles is a real reflection of economic disparity, from the Colosseum-like grandeur of James' Bel-Air home to the magnetometers in front of (fictional) Lower South Central elementary school. The country really does have a prison problem, jailing more of its citizens than anywhere in the world, black men at six times the rate of whites. One of the biggest leaps here is that a wealthy Wall Street scoundrel would be facing hard time. "Get Hard," a Warner Bros. release, is rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America for "pervasive crude and sexual content and language, some graphic nudity, and drug material." Quinn was proud of Deacon for assisting a friend in need not knowing that the friend’s Brooke. Katie questioned Rick about his relationship with Maya and advised him to think long and hard before rushing into anything permanent. Nicole finally got the answers to the questions that she has been pondering since her childhood. Still curious about the life that Maya had been living while in Los Angeles, Nicole had many more questions for her sister. During a staff meeting, Rick made an example of Ivy by criticizing her work performance in front of her coworkers. Seeing the frustration from her nephew, Pam gave Ridge unsolicited advice on how to interact with Rick. Due to the disrespectful behavior he witnessed from Rick, Liam’s desire to take over Forrester Creations intensified. Bill paid an unwelcomed visit to Ridge’s home determined to question his nemesis’ intentions towards Caroline. The visit took an even more uncomfortable turn when Bill saw the nude portrait that Ridge painted of Caroline. Nicole got more insight into Maya’s personal and business life while observing her interaction with Rick. Knowing the tough day that she had at the office, Liam planned a romantic surprise for Ivy. Having listened to Katie gush about her wedded bliss with Bill, Brooke admitted to her sister about her recent struggle with loneliness. While planning the guest list for their wedding, Quinn suggested that Deacon invite his friend from his twelve-step program unaware that the friend’s Brooke. Knowing that Nicole is the keeper of her secret, Maya cowered down to her sister and retracted the suggestion for her to move out. Nicole agreed to work on her relationship with Maya but asserted that she has certain expectations. Rick called an unsuspecting Quinn for a business meeting and proposed that she return to Forrester Creations. Billy insisted that he’s marrying Chelsea because they love each other, but Ashley appeared to be unconvinced by his denial. Sage tried to befriend Faith who gave her a frosty response. (Beside Rite Aid) Adrienne counseled Sonny about his marriage woes. Clint drugged Theresa! Fed up with Daniel, Nicole ran into a handsome new stranger. Serena received an unwelcome visit. Hope was wary when she met Clyde for the first time. Paige admitted to Daniel that she once thought he slept with her mom, and his mind started to turn when she mentioned a key detail about that night. Nicole sought Eric’s help with Daniel. Serena had a tense encounter with her partner in crime. Melanie caught Clint red-handed. JJ was alarmed when Daniel questioned him about the coat he borrowed last fall. Eve tried to recruit a new ally. While Will confided in T about the state of his marriage, Paul tracked down Sonny for a private talk. Melanie tried to make sense of her suspicions. Brady inadvertently provided her with a clue. Theresa got an unpleasant surprise courtesy of Clint. DEAR ABBY: I am a 14year-old girl, and my friend "Leah" is out of control. She has been going down the wrong path since sixth grade. She is what people call "emo." She has attempted to end her life more than once. She has sex with lots of boys older than her and has issues with drugs and cutting. She was abused until she was 5 and then adopted. She doesn't seem to have any morals. She says she wants to become a serial killer and a prostitute when she grows up. She also wants to have a baby in the near future. Leah has borderline personality disorder and probably some others. I have tried talking to her about what she's doing to herself, but she sees nothing wrong with her destructive behavior. I want Leah to get help before she winds up raped, in prison, or on death row, or becomes a teen mother on the streets. I don't want her to become another number, another statistic. What should I do? Who do I call -- the police, social services, a hotline? -- SCARED FOR LEAH DEAR SCARED: Your friend appears to be a very troubled and angry girl. If she thinks that by becoming a prostitute or a killer she will be able to assert control in her life where she has none, she's sadly mistaken. You say she has borderline personality disorder. If that's true, it must have been diagnosed by a licensed psychotherapist. Frankly, I don't think this is anything you can -- or should -- handle on your own. If your mother doesn't know what's going on, please tell her so she can alert Leah's mother and Leah can return to her therapist. However, if that's not possible, tell a counselor at school what you have told me so Leah can receive more treatment before she hurts herself or someone else. DEAR ABBY: My boyfriend and I have been together for three years and have planned our first vacation together. We decided to split the expenses 50/50. Last week, he announced that he has invited his sister and her boyfriend to go along and stay with us in the apartment we rented. Not only was I shocked that he would invite them without checking with me first, I became upset when he said he wasn't asking them to pitch in any money. Normally I'm not stingy when it comes to sharing, but I'm angry and I wonder if I'm overreacting. His mother died last year, and his sister is the only family he has left, which he tends to It would be more diplomatic to talk to the girls privately and convey your message. If you prefer they use better manners in your home, it is your right to say that to them. However, if you call the parents, the parents may think you are criticizing their parenting skills (and they wouldn't be wrong). As to whether you are expecting too much, frankly, you may be. Sadly, adults who never learned good manners themselves can't pass them on to their children. remind me of to make me feel guilty. How should I react to this? -- AMBER IN TEXAS DEAR AMBER: Tell your boyfriend that out of consideration for you, he should have cleared it with you before inviting anyone to come along. When he tries to make you feel guilty by reminding you that his sister is all the family he has left, patiently explain that you understand that, but this was supposed to be your first trip together -- just the two of you -- and this has taken the romance out of it. Then make it clear that you do not intend to foot the bill for Sissy and her boyfriend because that isn't fair to you. And if he doesn't agree, cancel the trip because you wouldn't enjoy it anyway. DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have two daughters whom we have taught to use good manners. We are proud that they always remember to use their "pleases" and "thank yous" and many people have commented how polite they are. My problem is the majority of their friends have little to no manners at all. They never thank me when we carpool places or take them out for lunch or dinner. I rarely hear "yes, please" when I offer food or beverages at my home. Even my daughters say it at home! Should I correct their behavior by asking them "What's the magic word?" Should I tell them I want them to use their manners when they are with me? Should I speak to the parents about it? Or am I expecting too much? -- MANNERS MAVEN DEAR MANNERS MAVEN: I'm sorry you didn't mention how old your daughters' friends are, but if they are over the age of 10, I recommend against asking, "What's the magic word?" DEAR ABBY: About a year ago, I loaned a small amount of money to a close friend I have known since childhood. She promised to pay me back, but has yet to do so. I wasn't too concerned because it was a minimal amount, but a few months ago she asked to borrow a larger amount. Again, I didn't hesitate to help her out because she has been there for me several times in the past in important ways -- although they weren't financial. Because the recent loan was a large one, I would like to be repaid. How do I tactfully ask her for the money without seeming petty or like I'm nagging? (I don't like confrontation.) And is it too late to ask that the previous smaller amount be included as well? -FRIEND, NOT AN ATM DEAR FRIEND: You don't have to be confrontational, and I wouldn't advise it anyway. In light of the fact that your friend has made no effort to repay the first loan for an entire year, it would be neither pushy nor nagging to ASK when she intends to start. If she can't come up with the entire amount, perhaps she can repay a little each month. However, if she can't/won't start paying you back, you may have to accept that you won't be getting any of your money. In the future, you should not lend anyone money without first getting a signed note stating that the money is owed to you and when it will be repaid. That way, if necessary, you can take the matter to court and have a leg to stand on when you get there. The Courier Herald Saturday, March 28, 2015/Dublin, Ga/Page 7c Review: Animated alien adventure 'Home' lands with a thud In "Home," the latest adventure from DreamWorks Animation, the misfit alien protagonist is called Oh ("The Big Bang Theory's" Jim Parsons) simply because that's the resigned reaction everyone has when he's around. "Oh," his brethren say with deep indifference at his desperate, over-the-top attempts to fit in and make friends. It's meant to turn into something positive by the end of the film. Unfortunately, "oh" is also the experience of watching "Home," an earnest exercise that falls flat, despite the best of intentions. The film, adapted from Adam Rex's beloved kids book "The True Meaning of Smekday," tells the story of an isolated alien race — the Boov — who are consistently staging elaborate (albeit friendly) takeovers on planets throughout the galaxy as they run from an intergalactic enemy. Led by the cowardly, arrogant Captain Smek (Steve Martin), the Boov are six-legged creatures with wide-set eyes and pig tail ears who change skin colors with their moods and speak in a bizarre, jumbled, contractionfree version of English. For the most part, the Boov are an ornery bunch who keep to themselves. Oh is the exception. After the Boov's invasion of Earth (in which all the humans are forcibly relocated to a new settlement so that the aliens can have their homes), Oh sets the plot in motion by accidentally emailing a party invitation to the entire galaxy (including their enemy). Suddenly a fugitive from his own people, he eventually teams up with Gratuity "Tip" Tucci, (Rihanna), a 12-yearold girl who avoided the relocation suction tubes and was separated from her In this image released by DreamWorks Animation, characters Oh, voiced by Jim Parsons, right, and Tip, voiced by Rihanna appear in a scene from the animated film "Home." (AP Photo/DreamWorks Animation) mother, Lucy (Jennifer Lopez). Along with Tip's cat (named Pig), they set off in a flying car powered by slushie machines in search of Lucy. Director Tim Johnson ("Antz") has compiled so many appealing elements — including the source material, the voice cast and a bouncy Rihanna-heavy soundtrack — that it's hard to believe "Home" lands with such a thud. Most of the problems are with Oh. A combination between Stitch (of "Lilo and Stitch") and "Star Wars'''Jar Jar Binks, Oh is pretty annoying. He might be earnest and learn a few lessons on his journey, but with his manic, destructive energy and deadly one-liners ("my hands are in the air like I just do not care"), he is also not someone you'd want to keep company with, even for an hour and a half. While Tip has the makings of a compelling, spirited character, most of that comes through in the animation and the help of well-placed pop songs. Rihanna's jaded and subdued voice-acting leaves a lot to be desired. In fact, the few successful emotional beats take flight when the film turns into a dialogue-free music video. As the buffoonish Boov leader, Steve Martin has a few fun riffs, but he seems to stick to the dull script most of the time, imbuing life and enthusiasm into the leaden dialogue where possible. Jennifer Lopez's role, meanwhile, is almost nonexistent. Visually, the world of "Home" is somewhat flat and synthetic, even in 3-D. The bright-color palette and bubble motifs are appealing, but without the magic of superior animated films, the candy colors start to have a numbing effect by the end. "Home" has a good heart, and yet, much like Oh, its valiant efforts to be fun just fizzle. "Home," a 20th Century Fox release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America for "mild action and some rude humor." Running time: 94 minutes. One and a half stars out of four. Review: 'Inspector of the Dead" is masterful work By The Associated Press David Morrell's "Inspector of the Dead," a sequel to "Murder as a Fine Art," tells the riveting story of a man determined to exact revenge for injustices done to him and his family. The people he intends to murder range from a shopkeeper to Queen Victoria. His brutal — and often theatrical — killings take place in mid-Victorian London, but have the immediacy of something happening today. Morrell has researched the era thoroughly to bring it vividly to life. The drama begins in February 1855, with England in the doldrums. The government has collapsed over the public's dissatisfaction with its handling of the Crimean War. Life in London gets more unsettling because the killer, who has already murdered people within easy reach, is now ready to go after more prominent victims. Thomas De Quincey, a reallife writer of the era, is a fictitious sleuth in the story, but the novel's real star is "the revenger." The ingenious ways he plans and executes his killings are mesmerizing. Morrell makes him an unforgettable character, and "Inspector of the Dead" is a masterful work.
