When the waves are up, even the most skilled surfers and swimmers practice extreme caution. 10 (opposite) Along Ocean Boulevard, in the community of Corona del Mar, Inspiration Point boasts sweeping views of Newport Bay and Catalina Island. This is one of the area’s most popular spots for watching the sunset. Here, a great blue heron scans the crystal clear waters for a fresh seafood dinner. Known as a rest stop for birds migrating from as far away as Canada and Alaska, approximately 200 different species of birds can be spotted around Upper Newport Bay. 12 (bottom) A damaged surfboard is a testament to this area’s powerful breakers. From May to October, the well-known cautionary Blackball Flag—a black circle on a yellow field—is displayed during periods of extremely hazardous conditions. When the flag is visible, no surfing is allowed at the Wedge. Artfully sculpted by wind and water, a massive rock formation frames the blue horizon at Little Corona Beach. Marine life experts from the Orange County Marine Protected Area Council are on site during the lowest tides of the month to offer insight to inquisitive visitors. The council also offers guided hikes of protected areas. 14 (top and bottom) Little Corona Beach has a small, gently curved shoreline that is well protected from larger waves. Boats and jet skies must stay 150 yards from shore, making this beach a favorite for young families, divers, and snorkelers. Corona del Mar’s coastal cliffs are part of the Monterey Formation — organically rich rock deposited along the California coast that are millions of years old. 16 (bottom) A soft light blankets the horizon at Little Corona del Mar. Snorkelers and scuba divers are drawn to the waters off of this rocky shore to explore the many fish species darting the undersea kelp forest, accompanied, perhaps, by a friendly dolphin or curious sea lion. Whether exploring rock formations and sea caves or just strolling along the sandy shore, visitors come to Corona del Mar State Beach to relax and play. Over 35,000 birds nest or migrate in the Upper Newport Bay area, including rare and endangered species. Birdwatchers are likely to spot different species depending on the time of year, making this one of the best birdwatching sites on the continent. 18 In a dance of color and texture, Pacific waves gently lap the shore and wind their way around the scattered rocks. Moon phases also cue area wildlife, particularly grunion. The “Grunion Run” is a curious sight to behold—during full and new moons of spring and summer, hundreds of these silvery fish exit the water in the evening to spawn on wet sand. 20 (opposite, top) Inspiration Point offers breathtaking views from above Corona del Mar State Beach. A grassy knoll provides a soft picnic area from which to enjoy the overlook. Below, visitors take a romantic sunset stroll; beyond, the jetties become part of the landscape’s changing palette, as boats head homeward to Newport Harbor. (opposite, bottom) With nearly 8 miles of spectacular beaches, Newport Beach has been a favorite setting for Hollywood movies and TV shows, such as Arrested Development, The OC, and Gilligan’s Island. Migrating whales travel 5,000 miles from Alaska to Baja where the females give birth in warmer waters before the pod heads back north. Gray whales 22 can be spotted from winter to spring; blue whales, in summer and fall. For a more up-close experience, there are several excellent whale watching cruises to choose from. A common dolphin leaps into the air in a show of grace and speed. Newport Beach has an extremely high dolphin population, with pods often numbering in the hundreds. Originally called McFadden’s Wharf, its use as a commercial shipping dock vitalized the Orange County economy during the early 1900s. To the north are distant views of Huntington Beach, and to the south, Balboa Pier. At the base of Newport Pier is the Dory Fishing Fleet, a market cooperative founded in 1891 that offers the 30 fresh catch of the day to local gourmet restaurants and the general public. The iconic pier is visited by millions of tourists and fishing enthusiasts each year. The underside of Newport Pier from a single-point perspective is hypnotic as the tide rolls against its heavy wooden pilings. A popular camping spot during the 1920s, quaint, permanent seaside cottages were built along the beach of this tranquil cove during the 1930s and 1940s. The land, owned by The Irvine Company, was sold to the state in 1979 and used as a State Park. Today, 29 of the 46 remaining cottages have been restored to reflect the ambience of that bygone era and some are available for overnight stay. Accessible at low tide, the tower was built in 1926 to match the French Provincial Revival architecture of the home of Senator William E. Brown. The tower, dubbed the “Pirate Tower” by locals, houses a winding staircase to the beach below. (left) A common sight along Southern California’s beaches and piers, a brown pelican exhibits a “head throw”—a behavior known to maintain the flexibility of the pouch and throat. The aquatic bird can be seen making impressive dives from great heights to catch its dinner.
