WORLD DAY OF PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS Today, “Good Shepherd Sunday”, has been World Day of Prayer for Vocations since Pope Paul VI designated it as such in 1963. The world-wide Church honors the vocation given to all Christians at Baptism, and through the vocations to Marriage, Priesthood, Diaconate, Consecrated Life, and the single life, may each of us do our part to build up the Body of Christ. Jesus gave His life for us that we might know fullness of life. A RCHBISHOP ’ S A NNUAL A PPEAL 2014 We have received $37,770 toward our assessed goal of $60,600. WORD OF LIFE How much the world is in need of the mercy of God today! In every continent, from the depths of human suffering, a cry for mercy seems to rise. … In those places where there is less respect for life and human dignity, one needs the merciful love of God, in whose light we see the ineffable value of every single human being. Mercy is needed to ensure that every injustice may find its solution in the splendor of truth. So today, in this Sanctuary, I solemnly wish to entrust the world to Divine Mercy. I do so with the burning desire that the message of God’s merciful love, proclaimed here through Saint Faustina, may reach all the inhabitants of the earth and fill their hearts with hope. … May the binding promise of the Lord Jesus be fulfilled: from here has to come out “the spark that will prepare the world for his final coming.” —Saint Pope John Paul II Homily in Łagiewniki, Poland, August 17, 2002 A P RAYER FOR M OTHERS Heavenly Father, You have given each person the precious gift of having a mother. Throughout the ages, mothers have been the unsung heroes of our lives, content with little things; a smile, a thank you, a token remembrance. May all mothers learn from the example set by Jesus’ mother, Mary, who is our Mother in Heaven. Let us always remember our mothers as a treasure which You have given us, whether they are still with us, or in heaven. Pour down Your grace on all mothers today and every day; and help each one of us to live our lives based on the good examples, love and devotion which we have learned from them. Amen. Today is Catholic Charities CYO Sunday I come before you in my weakness and need trusting in your motherly care, and in the love of God “who has done great things” for you. I give you all—my problems, my doubts, and even my sins. And I ask you to give me your own limitless confidence—in the tenderness of God, and in the power of Jesus your Son. Teach me the joy and freedom of abandoning all in His hands. Together with you may I behold God’s presence and His power at work in my life. This annual second collection asks parishioners within the Archdiocese of San Francisco to live their faith by generously supporting the good work of Catholic Charities CYO. Your contributions directly support programs and services that provide relief for homeless families, frail seniors, immigrants, the working poor, children and youth, and many of our most vulnerable neighbors who are struggling to meet even their most basic needs. Put your faith into action and change a life for the better today by contributing to Catholic Charities. I thank you for leading me to rise above my troubles and cares. Help me to accept all that befalls me with serenity, and to ask for all I need with expectant faith; that I too may be able to see and to say that “He who is mighty has done great things … for me.” Amen. For more information on the work of Catholic Charities CYO and how you can help strengthen families, build community, and reduce poverty locally, please call Jane Ferguson Flout at 415-9711227 or jfergusonflout@cccyo.org. “You cannot learn this from books, you must experience it in your life, that whatever you ask Our Lady she will do…” —Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta 1260 on your AM dial immaculate heart radio sharing the heart of the Christian faith Today is the “World Day of Prayer for Vocations” Let us pray for future priests: God, our Father, In Your love and providence, You call each of us to a more holy and abundant life. We pray for our young people in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Open their hearts and minds to know the vocation You have planned for them for all eternity. If they are being invited to follow You as a Priest, Brother, or Sister, give them a generous heart to respond to Your challenging call, and the strength to follow wherever You lead them. May families desire to please You by encouraging and supporting vocations within their homes. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Good Shepherd. A m en . WORD OF LIFE A t the heart of every culture … is a consensus about the nature of reality and the moral good, and thus about the conditions for human flourishing. In America, that consensus, as enshrined in your nation’s founding documents, was grounded in a worldview shaped not only by faith but a commitment to certain ethical principles deriving from nature and nature’s God. Today that consensus has eroded significantly in the face of powerful new cultural currents which are not only directly opposed to core moral teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition, but increasingly hostile to Christianity as such. —Pope Benedict XVI, Address to the Bishops of the United States on their Ad Limina Visit, Jan. 19, 2012
