The Jonite Story
The majesty of natural stone is perhaps best expressed by the
magnificence of the stone castles of England. Inspired by the rustic
appeal of natural stone, we wondered if the material could be used
to make functional and beautiful grates...
Yet, the sheer cost of using thick slabs of natural stone proved to be commercially unviable. Natural stone, although
having aesthetic appeal, was too weak and unreliable to satisfy safety standards and requirements. A new solution had
to be found.
Over four painstaking years, we worked hard to make our muse a reality. We embarked on an expedition to find the
answer, investigating minerals and formulation technology. So driven by our passion were we that we faced down
significant technological and financial challenges during this period. Influenced by the very material we were studying,
we found rock-steady strength and perseverance to finally emerge with the innovation that is Jonite.
Creating Jonite was the first part of the journey. The other was in ensuring its consistent quality. Due to our completely
new technological and production requirements, there were no satisfactory standard machines we could use for mass
production. We spent a further two years consulting with international engineers, building from scratch an automated
production line.
Today we are proud to offer you the durability, sustainability and sheer beauty of natural stone with Jonite.
Jonite, Your Green Partner
Jonite aims to drastically reduce carbon emissions by incorporating at least 30% recycled content in our products.
The use of Jonite in place of steel gratings will also contribute to the lowering of carbon emissions from the steel
and iron work industries.
Jonite is your partner in green and sustainable design. Green Label certified, Jonite meets
the Singapore Environment Council’s requirements for low carbon emissions and 30%
or more recycled content. In the drive towards sustainable construction, the Building and
Construction Authority of Singapore Green Mark scheme recognises the use of Green
Label certified products, and awards merit points for their usage.
Through the LEED® (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) green building
certification programme, the U.S. Green Building Council is transforming the built
environment. Jonite products contribute toward satisfying MR Credit 4: Recycled
Content under LEED®. The LEED® Green Building Rating System is the nationally
accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance
green building in the U.S.A.

landscape. With its natural good looks and
suitability as grating superior to natural granite,
Jonite makes for the perfect pool grates.
Toddler-Friendly
The small elliptical holes of BabyPebbles and thin slit slots of ChiseledRain eliminate
the danger of toddlers catching their toes in the grating.
Consistency Of Colour
Jonite’s low water absorption of 0.5% enables gratings to maintain their colour when
in contact with pool water, unlike natural granite and stone slabs.

Optional Features and Accessories
Stud Trimmers
This new feature improves the efficiency of the flow rate
to an existing pool grate. They can also be used
individually for non-perforated granite and stone slabs
which are totally below the acceptable flow rate.
Custom Curve Grate
Jonite curve grates are available in any radius at an
affordable cost. We also maintain a shortlist of custom
curve grates for architects to keep costs low. This list
is available upon request.
Grate Tiles And 90° Corners Pool Grates
Grate tiles are used in irregular drain connections, and
are cut according to site requirements by the installer.
Available in limited models only, the 90° Corners Pool
Grates allow a perfect perpendicular turn.
IllumGrates® For Pool Grates
Jonite IllumGrates are designed to incorporate the secure
placement of waterproof LED lights in the holes of the
channel grates. IllumGrates combine the functionality
of drain gratings with the aesthetic possibilities of LED
lighting throughout the perimeter of the pool.
Installation
As all pool grates are suitable for light-duty pedestrian
applications, it is possible for the grates to sit directly on
the drain shoulder seating tiled or just screeded. However,
the area of the seating must be flat and level.
Maintenance And Restoration
All pools are subject to algae growth on the tiles and grates
if not regularly maintained. Efficient water circulation and
correct sanitiser levels can successfully prevent algae
growth. Algae-stained pool grates can be easily restored
with Kleansol™ solution diluted as per instructions.

High Mechanical Integrity
Jonite Stone (reinforced) gratings are engineered to sustain load performances from
pedestrian to vehicular according to the standard as specified, and are compliant with

Low Heat Absorption
Jonite absorbs much less sun heat than traditional ferrous gratings, making it a more
comfortable material to have around the house and in children’s playgrounds. In addition,
it has dielectric properties equal to porcelain, making it an excellent electric insulator as well.

Heel-Guard Grates
Lockable Grates
Specially designed with elegant ladies in mind, Jonite’s
Heel-Guard grates have slim 6mm slots and small radius fillets
to prevent high heels from being caught in the grates. Compliant
with ADA requirements, these are extremely useful for cut-off or
scupper drains of the entrance or concourse areas of a building.
Jonite gratings are relatively safe from vandals even without
a locking system. Metal gratings are most commonly stolen to
be sold for scrap; Jonite has no scrap value and is thus safe from
theft. However, it is a mandatory requirement in many countries
for public gratings to have locking systems installed. Our Lockable
Grates are customisable to any size.
Grates For Highly Corrosive Environments
Custom Curve Grates Of Various Radii
Jonite gratings are generally suitable for all environments.
However, extreme environments such as frequently flooded
or consistently water-submerged areas and areas of corrosive
chemical exposure would require special considerations.
We are able to offer Jonite products tailor-made to higher
specifications as required.
Jonite curve grates are available in any radius at an affordable

L-Trimmers
IllumGrates®
L-Trimmers are always recommended for gratings built for
heavy-duty applications and above. They are designed to provide
aesthetic flair as well as ideal support for all Jonite gratings.
Jonite IllumGrates are designed to incorporate the secure placement
of waterproof LED lights in the channel grates. IllumGrates combine
the functionality of drain gratings with the aesthetic possibilities of
LED lighting, applicable for guiding vehicles in driveway and other
possibilities. IllumGrates is the perfect marriage of elegant stone
gratings with modern LED lighting.

These creative grates are suitable strictly for pedestrian use at 5KN static loading

We have created probably the world’s first
stone homogenous floor trap, achieving desired

Clean, seamless and corrosion-free, our Tile-Up Collection uses existing floor tiles with slit gaps as the solution preferred
by architects. Developed in answer to the usual option of raw concrete screeds, unstable covers and untidy holes,

Jonite sump grates are designed to be used
on point drainage systems, including as
intermediaries of long open-channel drainage
as well as kerb-side drainage. With load
applications similar to channel grates, Jonite
sump grates offer style, security and functionality.
Cost-Effective And Sustainable
Jonite sump grates and covers come in a wide range of standard sizes that can be
assembled with the addition of Jonite splines to form huge covers, giving you costeffectiveness and sustainability. For bigger multiple covers, a metal sub-frame may
be used. However, the sub-frame must be designed to sustain the required loading
on the entire cover.

SUMP GRATES/COVERS
Lockable System
The optional Lockable System feature for our sump
grates is available upon request and is available for all
applications and sizes. The L-Trimmer Frame comes with
embedded nuts and stainless steel 304 fastening bolts.
Hinged System
The optional Hinged System feature for our sump grates is
available upon request and is suitable for all applications and
sizes. The exposed hinge components are made of stainless
steel 304 with weather-proof polyurethane dampers.
Spline
L-Trimmer Frames
L-Trimmer frames are mainly used for supporting sump
grates, especially for heavy-duty applications and above.
They provide a perfect flat surface and seating allowance
to maximise performance of the sump grate. Our frames
are aesthetically designed to work within the overall look
and feel of the area.
Multiple Sump Covers Using Metal Spline Method
Huge sump covers may not be attainable in Jonite,
but using Jonite’s standard sump covers in sectional
form is a more cost effective solution. They are
supported by metal splines specially designed to
sustain the required loads as illustrated.
Splines
Splines are available in matching look and feel to the
grates they are used with. They are reinforced and
strengthened to sustain the load of two pieces of grates
or more, according to the load required. Both ends of the
spline must be embedded into the concrete with sufficient
seating of the drain recommended.

A Complete Tree Protection System
Jonite Stone (Reinforced) Tree Grates
Jonite Stone (reinforced) tree grates come in a wide range
of attractive designs, and are also customisable in terms of
colours, sizes, designs and application.
Metal Supporting Frames
Usually assembled in two sections or more, Metal
Supporting Frames are used in supporting the sectional
panels of Jonite tree grates away from the soil.
This maintains a good clearance for rooting and prevents
soil compression caused by placing tree grates directly
onto the soil surface.
Concrete Bases
Concrete bases can be either cast on site or prefabricated
by a local contractor. The lower base openings allow
excessive water to drain off, while the concrete base itself
controls surface rooting, retaining good soil condition.
In some cases, a complete concrete pit for the tree is
incorporated into the ground.
Design Services
Jonite’s advantage lies in its low tooling cost, passing on
savings to architects and allowing them to customise and
formulate new and creative aesthetics to support their
design theme. Our team of designers is able to develop a
full range of channel gratings derived from our standard
tree grates. This integrated collection will eventually offer
enhanced architectural choices.

CUSTOMISATION

Our design team is dedicated to working hand-in-hand with
architects and designers to overcome the constraints of different
materials so as to achieve the designs of your visions.
Commonly requested customisation in standard products are colours, sizes, patterns and applications.
Curve For Gratings – The meandering curve grates for pools and other amenities are available in many radii. Tooling is
required for each specified radius.
Loading For Gratings – Special performance loads can be achieved. These include loading for fire-engine hard
standing area of D400 (11.5 tonne wheel-load), and even F900 (exceeding 20 tonne wheel-load) for high imposed
loading areas such as airport and ports for vehicles with solid tyres.

Available in limited channel and pool grate categories only.
In place of the corner grate, two pieces of regular grates may
be used. However, for heavy duty and above applications, it is
advisable to incorporate a spline below the grate to sustain the
required load.
A grate shim is a flat strip of various thickness and
approximately 30mm width, used to raise the grating to the
desired height. It is fused permanently to the base of the
grating during the factory process.
Tile strips give an added flair to the edge of gratings covering
concrete drains. Installable with SealFix™ 103, these tile strips
are approximately 10mm thick and made of similar material as
the grating.

Grate Tiles
Jonite curve grates are available in any radius at an affordable
cost. We also maintain a shortlist of custom curve grates for
architects to keep costs low. This list is available upon request.
Grate tiles are used when a drain encounters an irregular
connection. The light duty models may be cut on site by the
installer. Heavy duty and above models should be factoryfabricated according to templates attained from site by the installer.

L-Trimmers And L-Trimmer Frames
Splines
L-Trimmers and L-Trimmer Frames are recommended for
Heavy Duty Gratings and above, providing aesthetical flair
and high performance support for channel and sump grates.
Splines are available in matching look and feel to the grates they
are used with. They are reinforced and strengthened to sustain
the load of two pieces of grates or more, according to the load
required. Both ends of the spline must be embedded into the
concrete with sufficient seating of the drain recommended.

Pool Grate Blank Ends
Reducers come in various inner and outer diameters and
simple universal patterns, enabling them to suit various
tree-grate models. Its main purpose is to allow a simple
removal when the growth of the tree requires expansion
of the tree grate.
Blank ends come with an wider allowance of 50mm on each
side of the grate for trimming, thus creating curvature without
using curve grates. Alternatively, they can also be used for end
pieces with odd lengths.

stone material, can be
chipped by hard or sharp
objects at impact or damaged
as a result of mishandling. Our
handy REPAIR KIT, an epoxy
putty filler system, allows you
to easily make needed repairs.
SealFix™ 103 is a two-part epoxy
mortar specially formulated for
fixing Jonite components such
as L-Trimmers or Frames used
for heavy-duty performance.
It has high strength bonding,
is impermeable and chemicalresistant and suitable for
‘dry-fixing’.
A new propriety solution,
Kleansol™ 511 is a stain and
algae removal solution specially
formulated for soiled Jonite
products, especially pool grates.
For normal cleaning, apply the
solution to the surface for 15 to
30 minutes before scrubbing
or water-jetting. For heavily
soiled gratings, soak for one to
two days.
All Jonite products are
impregnated with a thin film
of ShieldFix™ 108, a clear stone
sealer. It acts as a protective
veil during installation
and handling. It has a very
high compressive strength,
remarkable cohesion and
superior hardness and high
wear-and-tear resistance, and
is suitable even for driveways.

Surface Preparation
1. ShieldFix™ 108 is a twocomponent solvent-based
coating in a matt finish.
2. Re-coating is possible
if attempted in a proper
environment and clean
surface condition, using the
correct application method.
Lifting hooks are used for the
installation and removal of
gratings. Most gratings are
designed with an up-lift force
of less than 50kg, requiring
only a maximum of two
people to lift. For heavier
gratings, a pair of T-bars is
recommended. T-bars are
available in steel and various
materials to suit different
sizes of gratings, and can
also be used to pick up
small pieces of gravel stuck
between grating slots during
maintenance.
The pre-mixed filler comes in
standard colours that can be
custom-matched as required.
The repair is not superficial;
rather it fuses to the core
of the affected area as an
integral unit, creating an even
stronger bond than its original
state. This formulation is
specially designed for Jonite
products only.
Surface Preparation
Surface to be sealed must be
flat, solid and stable. All loose
particles, oil, paint, wax or any
substance that may inhibit
adhesion must be removed.
Adequate preparation via
suitable mechanical means
like scrabbling, grit blasting or
needle gunning is crucial.

Wheel Load
Wheel-loads refer to the weight of the vehicle and its typical load
depending on the type of the wheels. Pneumatic tyres spread the
load like the test-block in the illustration and solid tyres post a
greater point load, which is only recommended for Class E600 and

Point Seating effect occurs when the grate is not seated
perpendicular to the ‘L’ section.
Mild-steel extruded ‘L’ section is not flat on the inner side, thus reducing the
seating area and weakening the grating during heavy application. A chamfered
corner as seen may not overcome the situation. Alternatively, the Inverted or
Fabricated ‘L’ metal allows a perpendicular seating of the grating.

HOT DIP GALVANIZED METAL SUPPORT FRAME
Pebble Hole panel grates can be used as tree grates for huge existing
trees which are off-centre from common tree-grates formation. The
metal support frame below can be adjusted together with the panel
grates to accommodate any position of the tree-well.
All tree-grates require supporting frames except tree-grates that come
in 2 sections and are 1200mm or less in size. These are optional and
come separately for each individual model.

NOTE:Metal support frame - All tree grates that exceed 2 sections/panels and or above the size of 1200mm in size should be incorporated with metal supports. (metal support is
optional/excluded and is separately specified.)
CENTRICAL COLLECTION
The Centrical Collection is a simple and modern design comprising of 16 pieces of small curve grates forming a huge tree-well of 4000mm diameter or
3200mm diameter with a tree-well of 2400mm diameter. The tree-well is expandables as required according to the design profile constraint. Its slot
width is a mere 12mm and can be easily assembled. Within the tree-well of 2400mm diameter various diameters of inserts or reducers can be achieved
via customisation.

The Fallen Leaves Collection comes in 2 circular radii, R3000 & R2000. This design has medium width slots without por t hole. The R2000 has a tree-well
of 600mm standard comprises of 8 panels. The R3000 is a bigger tree grate that comprises of 8 bigger panels forming a tree-well of 2000mm diameter.
A dazzling, complete formation can also be achieved by combining the R2000 into R3000 as shown.
