You will also need to provide evidence of how any previous marriage or civil partnership ended and if you are aged under 18, parental consent will be required. Notices of marriage are valid for 12 months and are usually displayed for 28 days in your local register office. If you change the venue, or notices expire, fresh notices will have to be given. After 28 days, your marriage authorities will be issued. These are legal documents which are required by the Registrar who is going to conduct your ceremony. If you are resident in Cheshire West and Chester please visit our website or telephone: 0300 123 7037 to make an appointment to give notice. If you live outside our area, you should contact your local register office. Documents Marriage Authorities Foreign Nationals There are special procedures when either the bride or groom is a non EEA (European Economic Area) national and is subject to immigration control. Usually these are: • Evidence of identity, age and nationality – ideally a passport. • Any change of name documents, where appropriate. • Proof of residence in the form of a recent utility bill or other official document that shows your current address. “Helpful staff who explained things perfectly”.
