Scot Times M PH H x Fall 2012 S em Al be um r n sh i ip Ass En o c cia lo t se io d n A publication for HPISD alumni, parents, grandparents and friends A WORD FROM THE HPISD SUPERINTENDENT Celebrating the Scot spirit that continues for a lifetime Once a Scot, always a Scot! Those are words you can count on. Dr. Dawson Orr HPISD Superintendent In fact, many Highland Park High School graduates regardless of age - proudly trace their school lineage back to their elementary years, and they still spar with their friends about which mascot was the mightiest. Of course, as they grow, the young Eagles, Broncos, Huskies and Panthers are united Raiders, and then Scots. And Scots they steadfastly remain. The deep-rooted loyalty and lifelong friendships that HPHS graduates share is a treasure that is a rarity in today’s world. When I tell my fellow superintendents about the enthusiastically high attendance at our high school reunions, they can’t believe their ears. And when I tell them about how more than 700 Golden Scots who graduated 50 or more years ago pack the cafeteria for a lunch celebration every year, they usually ask me to repeat myself. “You mean they fly in from all over the country - and even the world - to see their high school classmates?” they ask in wonder. “You have to see it to believe it,” I tell them. This Scot spirit is evidence of this community’s underlying support for our schools and how it values a top-quality education for its young people. And it is something this district and its educators never take for granted. It is a privilege to work in a learning community where the parents send their children to school ready to learn. I trace this parental partnership to the days even before our kindergartners first arrive for school. Their learning is not just beginning. It is continuing following years of the best early childhood education a child could receive, at the hands of loving and dedicated parents who read to them and expose them to enriching social and cultural experiences. Those parents go on to volunteer in the schools, cheer on their children at extracurricular performances and competitions, and work with our teachers to ensure that they are receiving the best possible preparation for the world after graduation. 2 | SCOT TIMES | fall 2012 One of the greatest blessings for our teachers is when our graduates keep in touch. Just take it from Jay Harris, a HPHS 1978 graduate who can tell the story of our school system from more than several perspectives. Jay teaches classes in business, personal law and criminal justice. He also serves as a sports medicine athletic trainer. He is this year’s secondary teacher of the year, and he believes in teaching students about more than what is in today’s lesson plan. He enjoys teaching them about life and helping them discover resilience and independence. “Every year I receive emails and letters from former students expressing their gratitude because they have experienced some sort of failure that caused them to grow,” he writes. “That is very satisfying for me as a teacher, and I am thankful every day of my life to have the opportunity to impact students’ lives.” Jay also describes two teachers who made a difference in his life: HPHS teacher Linda Raya and HPMS physical education teacher Kellis White. “Linda Raya teaches in a style that is all her own, and I have never experienced anything like it in all of my education,” he writes. “Her compassion, love and encouragement of her students’ success have been a powerful driving force in my career.” About his other mentor, he writes about the lesson he learned as he struggled to complete the mile run: “Coach White helped me discover the power of determination and persistence, and that gave me the desire to pass the same lesson along to young people, helping them realize that it is all right to fail. Failure makes you a better person.” Indeed, these powerful life lessons are not on the syllabus, but they are an essential part of the studentteacher relationship. As we prepare for the new school year, cherishing the old memories and creating new ones, we want you, as HPHS alumni, HPISD families and friends, to know how much we appreciate every one of you. You have laid the foundation upon which this great school system is built. And it’s much more than bricks and mortar. It’s the Scot spirit that lives on. Dr. Dawson Orr is the superintendent of the Highland Park Independent School District. He is beginning his 36th year as an educator and his fifth school year as HPISD superintendent. Initially, each student made an outline of his or her hand and signed his name. Soon, the students were adding the name of the college or university they would be attending. Each year the wall is painted over to prepare for the next class. On the first Saturday in January, seniors go to the high school in groups to paint their squares as an expression of their personalities. The basic squares are limited in color to Highland Park blue, gold or white. This year's senior class joined together to purchase a special square to remember classmate, Lucas Cole, who passed away in 2007. 2012 HPHS SENIORS are attending 100 different colleges and Universities across the country Class was offered $14,800,000 in scholarships University of Georgia • Top 10 schools (including tie for 10th) Attending schools in 29 different states plus Washington, DC Texas Tech OU TCU University of Texas at Austin Baylor Texas A&M 4 | SCOT TIMES | fall 2012 SMU University of Mississippi University of Arkansas University of Alabama Scholarships & Awards Alumni Scholarship Wynne Banning Kerridge Thomas Lapham Walter HP Arts Linda Raya Scholarship Allison Grace Hall Peter Charles Walsh Christianne Beshara Memorial Scholarship Lara Alexandra Bergeron Becca Bettis Scholarship Farris Patrice Groth Boogie Blackwell Scholarship Emily Alison Atkins Michael Mauldin Boone Scholarship Oliver Charles Mitchell Myrtille Bradfield Scholarship Rachel Marie Grantham Bradley Family Scholarship Ellen Anne Murphy Cathy Bryce Scholarship Lara Alexandra Bergeron CARE Scholarship William Ackerman Nichol Laura Rose Ogden Emily Alison Atkins Ceramics Club Scholarship Samantha Little Carolyn Fair Chisholm Memorial Scholarship Class of 1961 Scholarship Piper Winters Weinkauf India White Weinkauf The Lucas Langston Cole Scholarship Clifford Simpson Davis John David Drinkwater Coleman Michalka Glass Mary Sears Haley Alexis Urschel Kevin & Brinda Curley Family Scholarship John Tyler Rentfro Shannon Carolyn Davidson Emily Jane Orr Darla Hollingshead Highland Belle Scholarship Rebekah Lynley McAnalley Kristin Loyd (Krissi) Holman Scholarship Lara Alexandra Bergeron Coleman Michalka Glass Jason Mahvi Duck Memorial Scholarship Ellen Anne Murphy The "Inspired by Tradition," 2007 Coleman Michalka Glass The Megan Gallagher Scholarship Savanna Taylor Linda Groseclose Scholarship For children of Teachers & Staff Bruce Harbour Scholarship Jeffrey Raymond James Matthew Robert Henry Scholarship Matthew Karl Dial Highland Belles Scholarship Madalyn Winters Brim Claire Bailey Wilgus Payton McCarthy Stewart Howard McLean Journalism Scholarship William Cobb Symphony Scholarship Emily Orr Peter Charles Walsh Tanner Elizabeth Harris Willie Tichenor Memorial Scholarship Patrick O'Boyle Scotsmen Scholarship Margaret Elizabeth Lynn Preston Hoke The Mary Dillard Scholarship Catherine Virginia Moore Stephen Modory Nightingale Scholarship Dixie and Bob Jordan Scholarship Brooks David Alexander Charles Mauldin Story Memorial Scholarship Cassiday Tanner Katherine Nowlin Emily Orr Kenneth Zon PC TAG Scholarship Bowden Schuh Alejandro Andrade National Honor Society Scholarship The Warren Hutcheson Scholar Jeffrey Andrew Barnes Clyde Stinson Memorial Scholarship Lindsey Moore Streepy Fred Damiano/ HP Literary Festival Scholarship Caton Christopher Berry Choir Boosters Scholarship Julianne Barns Matthew Karl Dial Margaret Elizabeth Lynn Barbara L. Scot Successes • The HPHS Science Team took first place at the Texas Math and Science Coaches’ Association state meet in San Antonio this spring. HPHS teams also took second place in Mathematics, third place in Number Sense, and earned the second place TMSCA State 4A Sweepstakes Award. This is the team’s seventh consecutive UIL title. • The HPHS Lady Scot soccer team won the UIL 4A State Championship title in a nail-biting shootout win over Trophy Club’s Byron Nelson. This is the fifth UIL championship for the Lady Scots, and the first since 2002. • Highland Park Middle School students participated in the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) this spring. Duke TIP identifies students nationwide who have scored in the 95th percentile on a grade-level achievement test. As part of this program, participants take college-entrance exams (SAT or ACT), and many earn scores that rival or surpass those of high school seniors. Of the 30 students participating, four seventhgraders earned Grand Recognition and 19 earned State Recognition honors. • Newsweek named HPHS as the top comprehensive (open-enrollment) high school in Texas, according to the magazine’s latest Top 100 list. HPHS was ranked 47th overall in the U.S., which places it in the top five among other open-enrollment schools. The broad spectrum of not-so-retired activities was of interest to all! Door prize from Casey Fisher was the famous Katy cake from Tyler, Texas, and won by Dr. Rodney Pirtle and his wife. Many stayed afterwards for a special presentation in the new updated HPISD Pierce Planetarium by director, Donna Pierce. Celebrating Don Brown Sr. ’43 The Alumni Association’s most recent and inspiring gift was given by Louise Brown Kee ‘74 and Don Brown, Jr. ’76. Their father, Don Brown, Sr. ’43, had a collection of memorable items from his years at HPHS that was just gathering dust. So Louise and Don, Jr. assembled the items and made a wonderful shadowbox to display them. The shadowbox includes his letter sweater, H Awards and other items that touched Don’s life at HP. We are so grateful to have this beautiful framed collection to share. With the 100 Year Celebration just around the corner it is a wonderful addition to our archives. On July 1 in the high school cafetorium, a team of Highland Park High School coaches, teachers, and former athletes, led by Class of 1978 graduate and current HPHS Athletic Trainer, Coach Jay Harris, hosted a retirement party for retiring HPHS Athletic Trainer, Coach Doug Gibbins. Approximately 500 of Coach Gibbins’s family, friends, fellow coaches, and athletes gathered to celebrate his 38 years of service as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Highland Park Scots. J.J. Gomez, the President of PlainsCapital Bank (and the son-in-law of former HPISD Superintendent, Winston Power) sponsored the event by grilling hot dogs and sausage links for approximately 500 attendees. Meredith Miles Neill, the VP for Business Development at Republic Title of Texas also sponsored the event and provided much needed bottled water for the attendees. Coach Gibbins’s daughter and granddaughter provided cookies for the crowd. Among the speakers honoring Coach Gibbins were Town of Highland Park Mayor, Joel Williams, HPHS Athletic Directors Randy Allen and Jerry Sutterfield, HPHS Athletic Trainer, Jay Harris, and various members of Coach Gibbins’s family including his son-in-law, his daughter, and his son. Coach Gibbins’s children shared stories about growing up as Scots fans while living and attending rival schools in Mesquite. Among the heart-warming and memorable stories told were Coach Gibbins’s daughter’s memory of the HP Football team’s victory over North Mesquite in the mid 1980’s when, walking off of the field, HP quarterback, John Stollenwerck, sought her out and told her “that [victory] was for you,” and Coach Gibbins’s son, Greg’s, memory of playing football against Highland Park when he attended Poteet High School. Greg told of receiving a bone-crushing hit from HP defensive back Drew Harris (Class of 1996 and current HP Alumni Association Board Member) when trying to catch a pass over the middle. Then Greg laughed and asked if Drew Harris was in the audience. Immediately to Greg’s left near the front, Drew smiled and waved at Greg. Greg explained how he wandered over to the HP sideline after that hit, and it wasn’t until after saying hello to a few of the HP coaches (who he had known for his entire life) that somebody pointed out that he was on the wrong sideline. Coach Gibbins will be missed on the sidelines of HPHS sporting events, but, no doubt, his friends will be able to find him sitting in the stands of Highlander Stadium on Friday nights this fall. 16 | SCOT TIMES | fall 2012 “ENTER TO LEARN, GO FORTH TO SERVE” Highland Park Education Foundation Board Members 2012-2013 President Treasurer Connie O’Neill Phyllis Riggins Vice President Secretary Will Beecherl Parliamentarian Kristy Robinson Advisor Jae Ellis Doug Thompson Pat Bolin Board of Directors Tom Abbott Rick Anigian Webber Beall Bob Carter Jim Crank Barbara Daniel Emily Deutscher Melanie Evanko Ann Fielder James Gibbs Fred Hamm Art Harding Jim Hitzelberger Blackie Holmes Jenny James Kathy Jenevein Spence Kendrick Keith Laycock Frank Marshall Elizabeth Modory = Charles Pistor Gage Prichard Doug Roach Delaney Rolfe Charlie Spradley Jack Turpin John Walter Marnie Wildenthal Advisory Board Cyndi Bassel Cordelia Boone Dick Davis Susan Farris Sara Lee Gardner Margo Goodwin Winnie Hamlin Juli Harrison Don Houseman Olin Lane, Jr. Greg Potter George Reynolds, III Wade Smith Sandra Snyder Mersina Stubbs Bob White HPHS Alumni Association Board Members 2012-2013 President VP Membership Spence Kendrick ’79 Treasurer Kaki Roach ’79 Vice President PR Cynthia McDonald Cummings ’59 Chrissie Shelmire McAnulty ’87 Secretary Advisor Francie Stevens Johnsen ’84 Eddie Mahon ’56 Board of Directors Patsy Freeman Kramer ’45 Olin Lancaster ’49 Barbara Bourn Arnett ’51 Tish Heard Drinkwater ’55 Ann Binford Collins ’56 Cele Dunlap Johnsen ’60 Susan Drake Rogers ’60 Anne Lutterloh Pierce ’62 Jim Castellaw ’74 John Van Amburgh ’74 Kathleen Thrash Parsons ’79 Marc Taubenfield ’80 Dina Jones Steele ’82 Todd Porch ’86 Liza Graham Ellis ’90 Michael Boone ’93 Drew Harris ’96 Russell Miller ’96 Advisory Board Marty Prince Nichols ’41 = Tam Mott ’46 Sara Smith Ratliff ’51 Julie Ann Hudson O’Connell ’52 Syd Carter ’54 Petrea Carter Boone ’56 Kathy Thomas Krueger ’59 Jackson Harkey ’67 Iris L.
