Heinrich Steinfest
The Pantologist
“Heinrich Steinfest entertains at the highest level.
He literally opens the reader’s eyes to the sheer
variety and richness of creation.”
Denis Scheck, literary critic
About the Book ▪ Sixten Braun’s run-of-the-mill
life as a manager implodes one day in a freak accident in Taiwan: a whale explodes and Sixten is
knocked out by a part of its innards. As soon as he
is released from hospital he boards the first available aeroplane – which promptly crashes. Again he
survives, having in the interim encountered the love
of his life. And so it comes to pass years later – Sixten has long since undergone the transformation
from manager to swimming pool attendant – that
he is brought together with a child, who can’t possibly be his, but then suddenly is: a newly orphaned
boy called Simon who won’t speak apart from in a
language of his own, unintelligible to others. A boy
who is extraordinarily talented in unusual ways: he
can climb like a chamois; he can draw like Leonardo
da Vinci. It is also Simon’s doing that many a straight
line of Sixten’s life is coming full circle …

Franka Potente
Dawning Slowly
After her acclaimed short story collection Zehn (Ten),
Franka Potente presents her first novel. It is a radical
portrait of protagonist Tim Wilkins: the financial crisis
has cost him his job, his inability to speak has cost
him his wife. The time has come to ask questions of
himself and his life.
About the Book ▪ Atwater, Los Angeles, is one of
the city’s better-heeled neighbourhoods: Tim, 49 and
a banker, has spent the greater part of his life here.
It is here that he built his house, here that he and
Liz, his wife, celebrated the birth of their son, Derek.
All that was long ago. Meanwhile Tim has reached
the lowest ebb of his old life having lost both his
job and his wife. A suitcase in each hand, she had
stumbled wordlessly over the lawn and into another
man’s car. Once his thoughts of revenge have blown
over, and he has sent his self-pity packing with the
help of whisky and his neighbour’s generosity with
sexual favours, Tim begins to reflect upon what went
wrong – and the way forward.

In the End We’ll Chuck
Gold Around
Shortlisted for the Leipzig Book Fair prize
Fabian Hischmann describes with gentleness and
melancholy the cracks and fissures we skim across
and those we slip down – for they are part of who we
are.

About the Book ▪ Max is a newly qualified teacher,
but that hasn’t changed the fact that his favourite
pastime is lounging lethargically in front of the TV
watching wildlife documentaries. Then comes the
call from his parents: they want him to look after
the house and dog while they are in Greece. On his
way there, little does he know he’ll be journeying
from Southern Germany to Crete, will have to face
the ghosts of his past in New York, nor that Jan and
Maria are about to enter his life again – he couldn’t
choose between them fifteen years ago. What about
now?
“I sit, legs wide apart, on the back seat. My Dad
is at the wheel of the estate, taking the twisting road
up to our house a little too fast as always. It’s the last
house in the place, beyond it the forest where so
much happened. It’s where I had my first cigarette,
where I fucked for the first time, and where I almost
killed someone.”

Thomas Weiss
Fleeting Acquaintances
About the Book ▪ “I’ve got to go back to the office
briefly, darling.” Those were the last words Berthold
Schulz’s wife said to him. She has been missing for
over a year, but there is no evidence that a crime
has been committed. An interesting tale, thinks the
narrator of our story, a journalist. He does some
research, writes about the case, and asks for his
readership’s help on the possible whereabouts of
architect Maren S. Was that really her selling windup birds in front of the Centre Pompidou? There
have been sightings in Poland, too, of a woman on
a bicycle. Then one reader contacts him convinced
she is working as a tennis coach in an all-inclusive
resort in Djerba, enclosing photo as proof. Electrified, the journalist immediately books himself onto
the tennis course and flies to Tunisia. Why then does
he name a bogus destination to his wife?
Thomas Weiss brings a brilliant twist to the Odysseus motif of the “eternally seeking” protagonist: at
the centre of his story is a woman. As intelligent as
it is deft of touch, this piece of literature makes one
thing clear: That yearning to leave the rat race of the
everyday – not one of us is a stranger to it.

Edgar Rai
The Divine Manuscript
An old musical manuscript, wreathed in mystery,
promises ultimate knowledge. It is feverishly searched
for by a man who believes he has nothing left to lose.
But is that really the case? The latest major novel by
best-selling author Edgar Rai is peppered with wit and
philosophical depth, and tells a gripping tale.
© Markus Schädel
About the Book ▪ Gabriel Pfeiffer doesn’t take
the clergyman who approaches him at the book fair
seriously at first. “It has to do with God!” he says;
that he might have made a discovery of real significance. What is the seasoned literary agent to make
of that? A few days later, however, reading in the
paper that the seminarian has been found dead in a
village church in Bavaria, his interest is piqued and
the story begins to hold him in thrall. At its heart is
a mysterious manuscript, which had beguiled scholar Charles Burney back in 1780. His quest took him
halfway round Europe until the precious item came
into his possession in Bologna. The remarkable
part was the trail of death that seemed to follow the
book: all its owners had died in mysterious circumstances. Gabriel is intrigued. He researches archives
in London and travels to the Bavarian village. What
he discovers is more than a simple, good yarn: it
does indeed deal with God, as was prophesised, and
with faith, with knowledge and love. In the end, it
also deals with life – and death.

The Summer of Wild Boar
Milan and Leo are taking a holiday. Their first in a
very long time. They have limped their way through
the financial crisis and are gradually getting used to
“feeling alive and well” again – a deceptive sense of
well-being as their time in the Languedoc is about to
prove.
© Julian Vanderbeke
About the Book ▪ They spend the first days of
their holiday clearing work emails etc. But after a
powerful summer storm, the internet connection
is down, there is no electricity, no water from the
mains, the streets are flooded. A neighbour provides
them with essentials and sends them up to an elderly
couple who farm a little and breed angora rabbits.
Their wool, and Leo knows of what he speaks, is
spectacular. They only hope that the couple will not
be troubled by the wild boar that have been rampaging through the area all summer. They have come
down from the Cevennes in their multitudes to the
villages and gardens. There is drilling in the mountains for shale gas and the animals are the first to feel
the consequences. It is clear to Milan and Leo that
the crisis they had hoped to leave behind is palpable
even here in the idyllic Languedoc. They are faced
with a question: to return to their old life – or not?

Thommie Bayer
The Short and the Long Years
Love can be mysterious, cryptic, and intense. Especially unfulfilled love. But is that what destiny has in
store for Simon and Silvie, brought together by two
unexplained deaths?
About the Book ▪ Silvie has lost her husband,
Simon his father. It is not only grief that connects
the two, however; Simon in particular senses a true
kindred spirit in the rather older Silvie. Soon he is
convinced that this is love. And yet he also believes
he must bide his time, for Silvie is still in a state of
deep confusion after her partner’s death. He waits
until the right moment has come and gone, until too
much has happened that cannot be easily undone.
But fate and their mutual affection keep bringing
the two back to one another. The Short and the
Long Years is a classic tale of two lovers. Thommie
Bayer writes about the tragic asynchrony of love and
thereby creates, paradoxically, a novel in perfect step
with our times.

The Voice of Oblivion
The second case for executor Kristina Mahlo
About the Book ▪ When Kristina Mahlo enters the
house of the deceased, Albert Schettler, there is no
ignoring the signs of his paranoia. The doors have
several locks; all the windows have grilles over them.
In a letter he left behind he writes that someone will
try to lay hands on the explosive contents of his safedeposit box in the bank. Kristina puts this down as
persecution mania, but the documents are indeed
stolen. Were Schettler’s fears well-founded after
all? Kristina’s investigation will bring unimaginable
truths to light…

about love and responsibility and about the art of
growing up without losing the magic of childhood.

About the Book ▪ On a carefree day in the summer of ’76, Bénédicte finds her mother Aimée in her
studio – she has tried to kill herself. Shortly afterwards her father moves with her and her younger
brother, Marcel, to Westphalia. He is to become
the director of a medical clinic there. He responds
evasively to questions about their mother; at least
she writes them letters. Brother and sister explore
the many rooms of the old villa and the enchanted
garden on the fringes of the clinic. Then school begins and Bénédicte becomes friends with the highly
gifted Susi Engel who can listen like no one else and
knows everything about politics, the Red Army Faction and sex. And she falls in love with Mischa of
the racing bike. She travels with him to Hamburg to
the opening of her mother’s exhibition. She doesn’t
encounter her Mum, as hoped, but she does discover
a painting that reveals her long-kept secret abode. At
last Bénédicte understands her father’s night-time
absences and why her mother never wanted to meet
her in spite of the letters – and she also recognises
her right to her own happiness.

About the Book ▪ Sisters Heike and Nele couldn’t
be more different. Heike is happily married, has
three children, and lives in a lovely cosy home. Nele
is a restless single, enjoying city life to the absolute
full. In short, they live in two separate worlds and
avoid one another. All they have in common is their

best-selling novels – in fact they don’t even write
the books themselves any more. They barely grin
and bear the occasional shared public appearance.
It is after one of these evenings that disaster strikes.

Time is a core constant of our universe. Thrown out

way to prevent chaos is to travel back inside a timebubble and stop the experiment before it even starts.
But it’s not easy. Nobody knows what time or place
a journey in the time-bubble can lead to and there is
the danger of time paradoxes. A small team of four

Andreas Altmann
Unholy Land
A Journey through Palestine
So many assassins, yet more victims.
In reality the Holy Land is a land condemned, condemned to discord, violence and hopelessness. But,
Andreas Altmann asks, is it condemned precisely
because of what it is, namely a place Jews, Christians
and Muslims must keep sacred?
About the Book ▪ Andreas Altmann talks to Jews,
Muslims and Christians, trying to understand what
drives them. What causes the hate that makes Palestinians victims of Israeli policy and on the other
hand turns them into offenders against Israel? He
travels through towns and villages, sharp-eyed,
ruthlessly curious, always on the look-out for special
stories, stories which will give him and us the key to
understanding Palestine. He shows us spectacular
images, lets us share experiences and encounters,
both brutal and poetic. His lucid and harsh observations, and above all his conclusions, will stir controversy, because his view is not tainted by preconception, ideology, and certainly not by any religion.
Andreas Altmann excels at coming close to the
people, at understanding their lives in the shadow of
a poisonous past and a sinister future…

Arne Molfenter
A Spy Named Garbo
The D-Day Secret
The spy who saved D-Day
This is the man who deceived Hitler and the entire
German Secret Service for years and influenced the
course of the Second World War with one spectacular
operation: Joan Pujol Garcia, known as Garbo. Arne
Molfenter relates the true story of the Spanish double-agent that Graham Greene modelled his international best-seller Our man in Havana on.
© Gunther Salazar--
About the Book ▪ Eight weeks after the allied
invasion has actually taken place, 22 German military divisions are still waiting for the supposed main
assault. They are waiting in vain because Garbo has
successfully misled them. Operating as one of the
Germans’ most important sources in England, the
agent has convinced them that the allied landing was
still imminent and would take place at Calais. What
the German leadership does not know is that Pujol
is the most important double-agent working for the
British Secret Service. He plays a decisive role in Operation Fortitude, the Allies’ diversionary manoeuvre deliberately designed to mislead the Germans
about the time and place of the planned landings.
The British called Pujol “Garbo” in reference to the
film-actress Greta Garbo. But what do we really
know about this greatest of all war-time “actors”?

Michael Schmidt-Salomon
Hope, Guys
A Better World Is Possible
The philosopher Schmidt-Salomon opens our eyes
to humankind’s sunny side.
Is humanity nothing more than a rogue creation of
nature which wouldn’t be missed if it simply disappeared off the face of the Earth? Definitely not, says
philosopher and best-selling writer, Michael SchmidtSalomon. He believes our biological and cultural development demonstrates that we have the potential
to get better still, still more ‘human’. An impressive
appeal for faith in humankind.
© Evelin Frerk
About the Book ▪ Of all the animals on the planet,
human beings are the cleverest and exhibit the most
empathy, imagination and humour. Man has created breathtakingly beautiful works of art and developed highly sophisticated ways of unlocking the
secrets of the universe. No other living creature has
so unselfishly cared for the sick and the weak, so
tirelessly fought for freedom and justice against all
odds. Much has been written about the dark side of
humankind while its sunny side has been neglected.
This book highlights it. It’s a declaration of love for
our sometimes unappreciated race. And it shows us
how it’s worth committing to humankind instead of
just giving in to the absurdity of the world.

Helge Timmerberg
The Fairy-Tale-Lady, the Sultan,
My Harem and I
“The most extraordinary, the most entertaining,
the most strident and, at the same time, the
wisest of German travel-writers.”
Frankfurter Rundschau
In search of the art of story-telling: Helge Timmerberg’s biography is in itself a long journey to the
Middle East with Egypt, Marrakesh and Istanbul as
its settings.
© Frank Zauritz
About the Book ▪ Lose pages from a fairy-tale
known as The Pearl Caravan: Since one wintery
night in Berlin more than 30 years ago, Helge Timmerberg has been intrigued by this story and by
its creator, Elsa Sophia von Kamphoevener. She
disguised herself as a man so she could join the
company at Turkish camp-fires and collect the best
tales. With a powerful sense of comedy, Timmerberg
illustrates how the story of the queen of fairy-tales
opened doors, hearts and wallets. He writes about
his attempts to conquer Hollywood with her story
and about his own quest which, over many years,
led him to Cairo and the Bosporus. And he writes
about Morocco, the country which freed him from
the agony of a broken heart, blessed him with a good
friend and, in the end, even brought back his father.

Benedikt Böhm
Face to Face with Manaslu
Speed Mountaineering in the Death Zone
„World-class athlete, Oxford-educated businessman, chiseled Adonis, savior of the Dynafit brand
and leader of a global touring revolution: all Benedikt Böhm lacks is a cape.“
Backcountry
He climbed Manaslu, one of the world’s highest
mountains, in record time. And yet Benedikt Böhm
had nothing to celebrate. Just a few days earlier an
avalanche near his camp had claimed many lives.
© Moving Adventures/E.O.F.T.
About the Book ▪ Autumn 2012 saw one of the
worst climbing accidents in the Himalayas. Benedikt
Böhm had been planning to speed climb Manaslu
when several mountaineers were buried by an avalanche. With his bare hands he rescued survivors
from masses of snow. Now he recounts the tragedy
in a book which tells us why, in spite of everything,
he decided to go for the summit just a few days afterwards. Looking back, he examines key moments
of his mountaineering career: the conquest of
Gasherbrum II, his first eight thousand meter summit, a dramatic fight for survival on Broad Peak,
the defeat on Manaslu five years earlier. He writes
of tough decisions and lonely successes, as well as
of friendship and rivalry on the mountain. And he
shows how expeditions, family and career can all be
reconciled.
