Ferdinand von Schirach
Fiction/Novels
“Ferdinand von Schirach is an exceptional stylist.“
THE NEW YORK TIMES
Taboo
“A miracle of purpose and precision that leaves most bloated thrillers on the
starting blocks.”
FINANCIAL TIMES
An artist and a lawyer try to understand what truth
is… Ferdinand von Schirach’s new book is the portrait of an artist, a legal drama and, ultimately, a depiction of the precipices of the human mind.
“Von Schirach’s characters are livelier, maybe because they are more authentic,
than in the usual noirs. And they are described in a style which is simple, brisk,
with no useless tricks: just touching.”
LA REPUBBLICA
“Everything about The Collini Case is extraordinary.”
SUNDAY TIMES
„Brilliant prose“
LA VANGUARDIA
About the Book
© Michael Mann / Ferdinand von Schirach
Sebastian von Eschburg is thrown off balance as a child
by his father’s suicide. He tries to save himself through
art. His photographs and video installations show that
reality and truth are two different things. What matters are beauty, sex, and the loneliness of man. When
Eschburg is accused of killing a young woman, Konrad
Biegler agrees to represent him. The seasoned lawyer
endeavours to help the artist – and himself in the process.
Schirach’s theme is of contemporary relevance to society; he compels the reader to consider existential
decisions. But Schirach’s book is far more besides: he
presents the novel of a life, laconic, poetic, and genuinely moving.

„This is a small gem“
THE GUARDIAN about The Collini Case
“Von Schirach decrypts with diabolic precision the mechanisms that
can push a person to commit the irreparable. By the same occasion
he invites the reader, in spite of himself, to reflect on justice. “

For months Arnold Steins has been leading a reclusive life in the rugged mountain-scape, seldom coming
down into the village. But is life as solitary and isolated
as it seems in that weathered mountain hut with all its
secrets? He returns from a brief absence to find the
last things that meant anything to him destroyed and
his dog brutally injured: a life and death struggle has
begun with an unknown enemy.
Suddenly Arnold understands how connected everything is: his son’s fate, his wife’s destructive grief, and
his own running away from a life in which he defended
himself only the once.
This book is a journey: to the Salpêtrière, the Paris
psychiatric hospital where Sigmund Freud studied
under Jean-Martin Charcot; to the Winter Forest
where a prince will be saved by his bored princess; to
Changing City where entire houses roam the streets
as ‘moving estates’; to the ghost factory where fragments of souls are reworked into spirit-graphics … Ten
chapters, each retelling the story of Marie and Jan.
About the Book
Marie believes that catastrophes only happen to
those who are not expecting them. Which is why she
always expects the worst – and she is right: an outsider, she is timorous and despairing, mostly silent and
full of yearning. What she isn’t prepared for is being
rescued, by Jan, who couldn’t be more different. Marie feels she has been found. And yet she does not entirely trust in her happiness, for she knows “all things
can be separated, divided, split up, even an atom.”
Can Marie and her stories take on fate? Can literature
save her life? Can Marie tell the story for which there
are no words?
“Radical, disturbing, grotesque stories, more shocking than any crime film.”

François Lelord
Lexicon of Fear
Hector Starts a New Life
About the Book
Fear is an all-rounder, and as such familiar to us all:
it can paralyse, hold up a mirror, consume and drive
us. It is a master of disguise, a stalker par excellence,
but can also strike like a punch to the stomach.
Annette Pehnt has been observing it, eavesdropping, acquainting herself with its palette, the A to Z
of fear: in her lexicon of fear she records with literary zeal everything life can throw at us – from the
fear of existence to the fear of death. These short
stories tell of those insidious, ridiculous, terrifying
moments of fear as experienced by mothers and
children, a fear of tsunamis or the consequences of
the financial crisis as well as those old favourites:
lifts, dogs and loneliness.

“Every turn serves the core story. No
meandering, no introspectives, the

DIE ZEIT about Mobbing
“Doctor, I want to start over, begin a new life.” A
common refrain from his patients. But is that really
the path to happiness?
About the Book
Hector is out-of-sorts. His children have left home,
his wife Clara is absorbed by her flourishing career,
his patients have become a little tedious, and he is
not at the top of his game health-wise. Is this the
infamous midlife crisis? He has just decided to ask
old François for advice when he receives news of his
friend’s demise. What a shock. Shortly afterwards,
however, there is reason to believe that Hector’s
friend and mentor is in fact alive and well, but, mysteriously, appears to be growing younger. Hector begins to comb the whole of Paris looking for François,
knocking at the doors of strangers and old acquaintances alike: the perfect opportunity to observe how
others are coping with reaching that “certain age”.
A good opportunity, too, for well-travelled Hector
to become better acquainted with his own marvellous city. And his guide on this journey of discovery?
François’s enchanting granddaughter. Small wonder
that Clara is developing a midlife crisis of her own.

About the Book
Within a brief period, four people are murdered bestially, Japanese wasabi rubbed into their stab wounds: not a pleasant
way to go. Inspector Kleeberg is at his wits’ end. He suspects
the killer is from the Asian milieu and hires Hài, an impossibly
good-looking German-Vietnamese man in his mid-thirties. Hài,
however, uncovers an entirely unforeseen link between the
victims and knows: the hyenas are on the loose in Berlin – always one step ahead of him in the urban desert landscape.
Johannes Zacher, born in 1966, grew up in the Swabian Jura and now lives in Berlin. This is the pseudonym of an award-winning film maker and crime
writer.

Four students are missing. All four were playing
the same online computer game – and apparently they considered the real world, the one they
inhabited, as a mere simulation. While Chief Inspector Eisenberg is still puzzling over whether
their disappearance constitutes a crime, another
young woman vanishes without trace. Together
with his Special Investigation Group “Internet”,
Eisenberg gets stuck in. What is going on? A serial
killer with five bodies on his conscience? Or a sick
joke? But soon Eisenberg finds himself part of a

When Chief Inspector Paul Regen of the Isar Valley, Bavaria,
discovers a formalin-soaked leg, he is uneasy: at the recent
criminology conference there had been word of two such
cases, one in Britain, one in Italy. Two could conceivably be

have a serial killer on their hands and he is playing some kind
of gruesome game. It is up to Solveigh to discover the rules of
the game and put an end to this grisly contest…

About the Book
Lena, a PhD student of history, is conducting research
in the gardens of the Reichenau Convent, by Lake Constance, when she stumbles upon a plant that has gone
unrecorded in the archives. No one, it seems, is willing
to provide further information. Her quest for knowledge
leads Lena back to a time when herbal remedies were
the only medicine available. And to a forgotten herb
brought back once upon a time by a young nobleman
from the House of Cordoba and planted by stealth in
these gardens. The woman he loved owed her life to its
healing powers.
Little by little Lena unravels the convent’s ancient secret
– and discovers the tangled roots of her own family’s
story.

The Trickster of the Dead
The Seers of Ravanne
Richard Schwartz has been among the great names
of fantastic literature since The Secret of Askir. The
next chapter of this story of success was written
with The Falcon of Aryn – and now Richard Schwartz
leads his readers away from Aryn into the magical

A firework of puns and a solid portion of black humour are the makings of Jan Oldenburg’s The Trickster of the Dead – most likely the most demanding quest any high fantasy hero ever set off to fulfil.
What could be more difficult than getting the crazy
ideas – a danger to public safety – out of a necromancer’s daughter’s mind?

When one of the main evildoers dies in the beginning of the story, one’s suspicion should be raised.
Alas, the dwarf knight Steelbeard’s gang of warriors
is completely clueless when they defeat a dark necromancer, who with his last breath tricks Steelbeard
into promising to take care of his little daughter Nenia and to take her to her nearest relatives. This
quest proves to be more dangerous than expected
– not only do all potential adoptive parents appear
to be complete maniacs, but – even worse: they all
die as soon as the dwarf warriors are about to hand
over the girl – who, by the way, is anything but a
sweet innocent little ray of sunshine herself …
Young Gelde is sick and tired of her poor life in the
harbour of Ravanne. When she acquires a very rare
dagger, this artefact gives her access to a whole new
life: to the mighty academy of the seers of Ravanne.
There, her magic talent is to be trained. However,
she is not a descendant of one of the hereditary
families which have been educated to be seers for
centuries and she thus makes many enemies. Together with the young noblewoman Arin, Gelde
starts her life-threatening training – in the course
of which she reveals an intrigue that is as big as the
clairvoyance of the mighty seers.

alone that the case even saw the light of day: Fritz
Bauer, chief public prosecutor in Hesse.
© Ulrike Steinke
A social democrat with Jewish roots, Bauer just
about managed to flee the country in 1936. He was
the man that made German post-war society talk
and brought Adolf Eichmann to trial in Israel. In the
restorative climate of the Adenauer era, the jurist
Bauer became a controversial figure, an individual
that enraged his guild and made many enemies:
“When I leave my office, I enter enemy country” is
how he described his situation. Ronen Steinke tells
us about the life of a man whose courage saved
Germany’s honour and changed an entire nation.
Ingeborg Bachmann and Max Frisch
For four years, between 1958 and 1962, Ingeborg Bachmann and
Max Frisch were a couple. However, no pictures exist of them and
very little information about the couple ever reached the outside
world. Yet the two of them left traces: in Paris, where their passionate liaison started, in Zurich, where they moved into an apartment
together, and in Rome, the city to which Frisch follows his lover and
is soon haunted by jealousy. Critical of himself, he admits: “We did
not master the end very well. Neither of us.” Even beyond their
painful break-up, they can still relate to each other in their work
and they reveal their innermost feelings and wounds in their writings.

Where Does Love Come From?
All our Clever Emotions –
from Anger to Yearning
About the Book
We are often assailed by them when we need them the least: stage
fright before a performance, envy that gnaws away at us, shame after we have put our foot in it, or anger that can barely be controlled.
When in love, we are often absent-minded and an unfulfilled longing overshadows our days. Are we able to control our emotions or
do they govern us? Claus Peter Simon traces these fascinating questions and shows us why our actions are almost always based on
emotional decisions.
Only when we understand how emotions come about and how they
work can we competently deal with them, use them as signposts
and make wiser decisions.

Thomas de Padova
Leibniz, Newton and the Invention of Time
Konrad Stöckel
How to Turn off the Light with AC/DC
and Other Wonders of the World of Knowledge
At the beginning of the 18th century, Isaac Newton
and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz unleash a heated debate, which has continued to be a topic of discussion
for mathematicians and philosophers up to the present day: What is this phenomenon we call “time”?
Thomas de Padova draws a vivid picture of an epoch
in which time became a fiercely discussed topic in the
field of sciences and in which clocks began to rule our
daily life.
About the Book
If you have always wanted to know how far
a coke rocket flies, how washing-to-go works
and how the light can be turned off with
hardrock, then Konrad Stöckel and his crazy
adventures between science and madness are
perfect for you. Fearless and with full physical
play, he shows us everything there is to know
about his fantastical experiments and incredible test arrangements, scientifically profound
tricks and his numerous mad inventions – entertaining and full of surprising conclusions.
About the Book
On the basis of the lives of Leibniz and Newton,
Thomas de Padova unfurls the history of our concept
of time. He shows why time became omnipresent at
the turn of the 18th century and thereby a central
topic of the sciences. A captivating expedition to the
accelerated world of modern history.

The dispute between Isaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz developed into an affair of state. Their
decisive discussion about the nature of time marked
the cataclysmic transformation of the concept of time
in an age in which the precision of mechanical clocks
increased fundamentally: clock faces were suddenly
able to differentiate minutes and seconds and owning a clock became something that was very much
taken for granted by the middle classes in cities.

The Wisdom of the Elephants
Mating Season
Tracking Animal Love Life
Documentary filmmaker Andreas Kieling
spends months with animals and watches the
circle of life up close. He watches the rut in the
Eifel region; in the Congo he witnesses how
dedicatedly stately silverbacks care about their
offspring. He recounts his most exciting trips,
which lead him to love-crazed lions, to river
dolphins and rare desert elephants, but also
encounters with native animals: the love life of
frogs and hares, the mating habits of mountain
cocks, Alpine newts or hedgehogs. He tells us
about which animals form monogamous relationships and which prefer to surround themselves with a harem. He answers the question
of whether concepts like family planning or
jealousy exist in the animal kingdom. He also
reveals the species that resemble the human
one the most when it comes to their sexual behaviour.
What My Job as a Ranger in
Kruger National Park Taught me for Life
When watching from the outside, everything seems to
go according to plan in Kerstin Plehwe's life. A successful enterprise, sports car, happiness in her personal
life. Until the manager is suddenly confronted one day
with a question about her biggest childhood dream
– and she remembers: South Africa, where she lived
when she was a little girl, and her dream to work as a
ranger in Kruger National Park.
