Serving Nottingham School nottingham.k12.nh.us The Diener Daily 2009 Free October 07, 2009 Nottingham Day 2009: A Whole Day of Friends & Fun By Zach Brown Nottingham Day was a great way to spend the day. The festivities were held at Nottingham School on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Some activities included food, games, rides, and much more. You couldn’t go to Nottingham Day and not have fun. In the front field, besides the parking space, there were rides and bouncy-houses for younger children. Booths along the road sold food, jewelry, hairspray, and toys. You could play games on the playground to earn tickets for prizes. There also was a climbing wall and a jumping machine. Whether you like window shopping, playing with your friends, or just hanging around, Nottingham Day was a fun place to be. Earlier in the day, many road races were held for all ages. In the race for 18 years old and under, Evan Horvath got first place, Erik Rolser got second, and Billy Harju got third. An entertainment area featured live music performances, discussions, and great stories. At the end of the day, a chicken barbeque buffet was set up. The chicken was smoked over hot coals. Overall, the whole day was a success, and everyone had fun. Before coming to Nottingham, Mr. Leatherman worked at Londonderry Middle School as an eighth grade math teacher. Mr. Leatherman decided to come to Nottingham because of the community of the school. Everyone is proud to be a knight, they have pride in their school, and he was just overwhelmed by the friendliness radiating from both staff and students. Nottingham School has a completely different environment than Londonderry. Londonderry has only grades 6-8, and it had over 1,400 students! There were many more choices/electives at Londonderry, and band and chorus were in-school activities that you could choose as a “class”. Mr. Leatherman’s goals as vice principal are to get to know everyone and for students and staff to get to know him. He wants to be seen around the school, not just shut away in his office. Mr. Leatherman wants people to know that his door is always open for both teachers and students. Some of his hobbies include Call of Duty on his PS3, running, listening to music, and watching sports. Mr. Leatherman’s advice to students is to be respectful, nice, listen to teachers and most of all, keep an open mind! He says if you do, you will be able to learn more. Go, Mr. Leatherman! The Real Estate in New Hampshire By Michael Hartford This is not a joke! There are a few very expensive homes in Nottingham, NH. If you don’t trust me, you can check it out on 11 Meindl Road. The listing is for 950,000. It is a single family property that has 2400 sq. ft and ten acres. The house was built in 1937 and has two stories. The property includes a one car garage, (one) attached parking space, a lake view, and an out building. This house is also near two schools including Nottingham Elementary School and Dover Senior High School. Randy Judkins: Full of Laughs On September 24, 2009, Nottingham School, along with Northwood, Epsom, Strafford, and the freshmen class of Coe Brown Northwood Academy all gathered into Smith Hall to watch Randy Judkins, a professor at Ringling Brothers Barnum and Baileys Clown College in Florida. Randy is a unique motivational speaker who talks to kids about being a STAR. Each letter of the word star stands for something that he would teach us about: S- sense of accomplishment, T- team, A- (positive) attitude, and R- respect. Along with these words, he would perform a skit to accompany it. Some of his skits included playing a PE teacher named Sunny Day, riding a unicycle, and juggling swords!! He was very interesting, very funny, and was definitely worth it!! 3 National News Michael Jackson’s Death Michael Jackson was the king of pop. His music was what you could hear all over the radio in the ‘70s up until the late ‘80s. Michael Jackson first sang in 1964 in the Jackson 5. The Jackson 5 was made up of Michael, Jermaine, Tito, Marlon, and Jackie Jackson. Then he went solo and was making music up through the ‘80’s. All Michael Jackson’s success ended on June 25, 2009. He died at the young age of 50. Michael Jackson’s death was due to a drug overdose. Missouri Amusement Company is taking his Ferris wheel from Neverland Ranch and bringing it across the Midwest. I’m not sure of its first destination. The cost to ride this historic Neverland Ranch Ferris wheel is $4.50 per person, which is the most expensive Ferris wheel ride I’ve ever heard of. City’s Schools See Jump in Size of Classes At Manchester’s elementary schools, middle school, and high schools the class sizes have been getting bigger and bigger each year. Some classes at Central High School have 30 kids and not enough desks. They are actually pulling desks back and forth from room to room. The growing of kids has wiped out 76 teaching jobs because the school budget was not large enough. Beech Street Elementary School has an average of six new students per class this year. Some classes at Central High have gotten into the 40s. “Kids were sitting on the floor with their backs to the wall because there weren’t enough desks,” says Central High department head, Kathleen Mirable. The teachers are handling it quite well though, and the kids are mostly behaving well. Dr. Salt is the soda for the Super Bowl. If you drink it really fast, you will taste all of the 24 flavors. Will school summer vacation’s becoming shorter? By Alexis Lorden Our president, Barrack Obama, wants a shorter summer vacation. He claims we need to go to school more often because in other countries they go to school longer than we do. All though we spend more hours in school, apparently we need to spend more days in school. In Asia, they spend from 190 to 201 days at school, compared to our 180 days. To make up for it, we have more hours in school. The US has about 1,146 hours which seems like a lot, compared to Singapore’s 903 hours. I personally think that we do not need any more school hours in school. It is tough enough just to get through one day. To read more go to :http://www.wmur.com/education/2 1129315/detail.html. Is This the Best Basketball Shot Ever? By Nathan Brown On September 28, 2009, a student from Texas A&M made an amazing basketball shot from the top tier in their football stadium to the field, where a basketball hoop was set up. The five other students there and the one who made the shot all claim this is real, and not computer-edited in any way. Some people don’t believe this is real, but most believe it. This is probably the best basketball shot ever. 4 Local Sports Barrington Volleyball By Jayme Buck Knights Defeat Dragons By Brandie Valentine Softball: Bumblebee Lightning Tuna Teamwork! th On September 18 , Barrington volleyball played at Exeter. JV played first and lost. They lost all three of the games. There were only a few points in between the teams with one score of 23 to 25. JV player Katy T. was awesome with her serving and passing abilities. Another player was Hanna (Barrington) with amazing setting and some great saves. Jayme Buck had a lot of saves and serves. JV was playing volleyball right with bump to setter and setter setting while the hitter hit it over. JV almost won with an intense game. The other coach was impressed that JV was trying to play volleyball right. Varsity played second and won all four games with scores like 25 to 11. Some star players gave powerful serves, great sets, and hits that were amazing. Altogether, Varsity had great plays and serves. The other team just hit it over the first hit and not really playing volleyball. Good job to all teams. ☺☺ After a tough season for all local basketball teams, Barrington Bull Dogs ended their season with a 12-0 record after defeating the Strafford Spartans in the championship, 45-15 on February 13, 2009. By Shannon Frechette The Lamprey River All-Stars Team, aka Bumblebee Lightning Tuna, made up of Raymond, Epping, and Nottingham, played a good game in the month of August 2009. Lamprey River played against Londonderry, a team who put up a good fight. Lamprey worked as a team and kept up their defenses, unfortunately, so did Londonderry. The game required six innings. In the fifth inning Lamprey caught up and tied the score so they started the sixth inning. Londonderry scored one run, but so did Lamprey. This happened every inning until the twelfth, when Londonderry let down their offenses. That inning they didn’t score a run and since it was the bottom of the twelfth, Lamprey was up to bat and all they had to do was score one run and they would win the game. Londonderry got them out once, twice, and all they needed to do was get them out once more and it would be yet another inning. The teams were getting tired and some probably even bored. Brandie (Bran Flakes) was up to bat and Shannon was on third, the coach was telling the other team to back up and be ready. The ball was pitched and Brandie hit a ball straight to the pitchers shins, Shannon booked it home, and slid just in time to get under the tag. Lamprey River won, but they couldn’t have done it without teamwork. Throughout the whole game Lamprey worked as a team and, in the end, they won as a team. Sometimes all you need is teamwork to win the game. 5 How Many Years? By Kayla Sharp In September 2008, the Nottingham Elementary School’s girls soccer team won their first soccer game in eight years. It was against Barrington Elementary School. The score was four to nothing. The Nottingham girls would not have done it without the help, support, and coaching of Ms. Gilmore. After the game, we were so happy. We had no clue that the seventh and eight grade girls were finally going to win a game. Ms. Gilmore called it a curse before we had won our game. The next day, we heard the morning announcements, like we do everyday, and there was one extra announcement. It was about our game. “For the first time in eight years, the Nottingham girls soccer team won a game.” When whole school heard what had happened, they congratulated us all day. We were very happy. That year we made it to the semifinals. When we played Chichester, the game ended in a tie. So we had a shootout, and there was confusion about the officiating of the shootout. The next game we played was for the playoffs. After the game we had to do the shootout against Chichester again. We were so tired because Chichester didn’t take it well the first time. We lost the shoot out and were not able to play anymore that year. Field Of Excellence Awarded Fisher Cats turf crew was awarded with the Field of Excellence Award on September 16, 2009. She is also the world’s greatest under handed softball pitcher. Jennie has been playing softball since she was five and pitching since she was eight. Jennie can throw roughly about seventy miles per hour and she can pitch up to seventy-one miles per hour. Some of you softball players and fans out there may be wondering how she got so good. Well, Jennie practices a lot! She tries to practice every day with her wild schedule. Jennie’s quote she looks to on the field is, “Practice like its competition and compete like its practice.” Your also might be wondering what Jennie does for a job or on a regular basis. Jennie pretty much plays softball for a job. Jennie loves softball and is very proud of where she is today. Jennie also plays volleyball, but doesn’t do it very often because she is always flying in planes and traveling by car to other states to compete. If you haven’t already figured it out, Jennie’s main position is pitcher; she pitches every game! Jennie is an amazing pitcher, and if you tried as hard as she does, some of you will get to where she is today, the world’s most famous softball pitcher. All it really takes is to believe in yourself and have confidence! A.L. Wildcard Race Heats Up! Red Sox and Rangers Battle for the Playoff Spot Mayweather Slams Marquez By James Mackinnon By Dylan St. Hilaire Floyd Mayweather Jr. is an undefeated champion with 25 knockouts. His father, a former boxing contender, was a big influence on his boxing career. In 1993, before he turned professional, he got his first Golden Gloves Award, which is when you win the Campion Golden Gloves match. In 1996, he placed Bronze in the Olympic Games. His first professional boxing match was October 11, 1996, which he won by the 2nd round knockout. Juan Manuel Marques is a lightweight Mexican fighter, but fights at a considerably lighter weight than Mayweather. Marquez has a record of 50-51 with thirty-five knockouts. Marquez also won two Golden Glove Tournaments. The fight was announced on May 1, 2009. The fight was fought at a catch weight of 144 lbs. This fight was between lightweight champion Juan Manual Marquez and Floyd Mayweather Jr. and was a huge fight at the MGM grand in Las Vegas. The fight lasted for 12 rounds with Mayweather taking the victory. Mayweather proved to be the bigger and stronger fighter and remains an undefeated champion. Mayweather is now resting for the next fight not yet announced. The Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers have been battling for the playoff spot since the very beginning of August. The Red Sox have a slim five game lead over the Rangers. The Red Sox pitching rotation have been ecstatic lately in the month of September. One player that is really standing out is Daisuke Matuzaka, who had just made his return off the disabled list and shining in his first two starts getting wins in both of his starts. Another player is Clay Bucholtz going seven and three this year, really breaking out since his return. Lately, the Red Sox have been on a hot streak despite losing two out of four against the Royals. The magic number for the Red Sox remains at three games. The only way you can find out who takes the wildcard is to watch and see. 7 Mark Martin Wins 1st Chase Race By Heath Rohr On September 20, 2009 Mark Martin won the first 2009 Chase for the Cup Race in Loudon, New Hampshire otherwise known as New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Early in the race, Kasey Kane blew his engine. He said that it felt a little rough on the back stretch. Juan Pablo Montoya led the most laps and qualified first. Mark was in real amazement when he won the race. He thought he was dreaming. Martin continues to lead the chase in points with Denny Hamlin trailing behind him by 35 points. Jimmy Johnson won at Dover Delaware a week later. He has won the cup for the past three years in a row. Hopefully, Mark wins because he is retiring next year at the age of 56. Boston Bruins By Jamie Sigmund The Bruins have faced a lot of tough teams in the preseason this year. The reason for this is because new players on different teams are doing all they can to get on the roster for their team. They’re trying to make their coaches proud of them for their ability. A normal game consists of goal scoring and offense as well as defense. Also, a part of the game is the toughness and physical play of some of the players. Certain players are used during the preseason games. Normally, the preseason is rough but this has been really rough for the new players. They are already getting into their first fight on just their first or second game of their career. Two players of the Boston Bruins have even been boxing to get ready for the fights in this year’s regular season. The names of the two players are Shawn Thornton and Milan Lucic. Checking and hitting are definitely one of the big reasons that teams win or lose games. 8 Politics For The Nation By Audra Jenkins, Justin Demers, and Tyler Tumblety What is America’s future? America is currently in one of the worst economic states since the Great Depression. Over 10% of our population is still unemployed. We are in a war in the Middle East. President Obama promised change…but when will we get it? According to BBC News, the average American salary per year is around $46,000. Yet, 9.7% of the population is unemployed. Teenagers do the worst with an unemployment rate of 25%. The Asians on the other hand, fair far better averaging out at about 7.5%. People have been forced to work part time because their salaries or hours have been cut. The number of people that haven’t looked for a job because they don’t think they’ll find one has doubled in the last year. About 117,000 people have lost their job every month in the construction business for the past six months. Construction business lost 65,000 workers. The car manufacturing lost 15,000 people. The amount of financial workers that are unemployed has slowed down since the beginning of the recession, but still 28,000 people in August. Retail sellers from November ’08-April ’09 lost in an average of 138,000 people, but from May-August they lost an average of 46,000 people. On the other hand, health-care business has risen by 544,000 jobs since the beginning of the recession, and has raised another 28,000 jobs in August. In August, average pay per hour was $18.65. The job market needs some major help and we can only hope that Barack Obama will bring our economy back to the top. The housing market isn’t fairing well either. Home values are very small and not many people are buying. The people in the best shape are the people that have wads of dough, good credit, don’t have to sell and have excellent knowledge of their mortgage options. Since the beginning of the recession, BBC News reports that home values have fallen by about 12.9%. Not many homes are being built either. From 2000-2003, 1.3 million homes were built annually. Just last year, only 617 thousand homes were built. The average time to sell a house is ten months. We can hope that Obama will raise us out of this recession and get homes selling again. President Obama had billions of stimulus money sent out to people. He thought that by giving them the money, they would pay off some of their debt. That is part of the reason why America’s economy today is so bad. People just buy, buy, buy. Did they ever stop and think, “Hey, I don’t really have enough saved up for new car. Maybe in years to come I will be able to get it!” or whatever the circumstance was. Obama clearly didn’t realize that people would use the money for other things, so the economy is still hurting. Since the September 11th attacks in 2001, America has taken a different look at the Middle-East. From the Persian Gulf, to Northern Africa, US troops are fighting toward separate objectives against varying foes. Entering cities in Iraq, US Marines are still trying to stabilize the economy. But it is believed by August of 2010, troops will be completely out of Iraq, and will be shipped over to Afghanistan. Barack Obama spoke at the US Marine Corps base in North Carolina, stating that more troops will be transported over to Afghanistan. 9 The main focus of the US military is to maintain the fight with Al Qaeda in the Middle East at this point in time. Recently, police captured a man trying to make his way into New York on September 10th of this year. They believe that he and several others were planning to attack several cities on the September 11th anniversary. Reports also came in from Chicago. That means the threats are still coming. We must maintain a military balance in the Middle East; even if the citizens of America don’t agree. The war in Iraq has been compared to Vietnam in terms of a “meaningless war.” People believe that America had no right stepping into Iraq and killing innocent people. At this very moment we are trying to stabilize Iraq’s economy, but at the same time, track down Al Qaeda in Afghanistan and other parts of the country. BBC News recorded in 2007 that there were approximately five million orphans living in the Middle East. This is not because of American personnel. This is because of a country killing its own people, and its economy breaking down. Also, there has been a recorded 85,000 deaths in Iraq alone to citizens. This is from suicide missions, car bombing, etc. Is this what we want for another country? That is why America is in Iraq. We want to help the people, not kill them. We can’t just sit back and watch another country kill itself. We are in the Middle East to help them and us. We are helping our cause and the citizens. Helpless people are dying. Is that what you want? So America is in a terrible state. Barack Obama has, arguably, the worst job in the world right now. He has to take care of himself, and everyone in the United States. What can we do now? Maybe Barack Obama will bring America back to what it used to be. OBAMA’S PROGRESS! By Bailey Serpa Barack Obama was sworn into presidency on January 21, 2009. Since then he’s gone through many challenges that have been handed down to him. The missiles being launched, the bad reaction to the election in Iraq, and not to mention, The Great Recession. I think Obama is doing a wonderful job considering all of these challenges thrown on him. The Koreans are continuing to test their missiles and President Obama has told them if they continue to launch the missiles, then the U.S. will not supply any food, aid, etc. It leaves them in agreement, of launching missiles get you nothing, but it leaves it on bad terms. In Iraq, the election went poorly and there have been several violent protests. Some people are comparing Obama to F.D.R because F.D.R brought us out of the Great Depression, and some people think that Obama well lead us out of the Great Recession. Technology 10 Gadgets of the Future Future Warfare By Breanna Cole By John Schlim “Is getting the new, never seen before, not even touchable, gadget the cool thing? Yes, maybe it is, but what happens if it’s unavailable and it’s one of many gadgets of the future?” I love new things. From the shiny, slick screen to the unpressed buttons. My eyes just meet the different shades of all Ipods, but those are the gadgets of now. What’s really interesting are the gadgets we may have in the future. According to About.com, the top eight gadgets of the future so far are free energy, transporters, replicators, universal communicators, cures for illness, flying cars, robots, and time machines. So, if you find what the future might hold for you interesting, then keep reading to figure out what you might be holding in the palm of your hand. Inventors make up such things as holograms, unbelievable cars, and unthinkable technologies to make our future world more efficient. Some of these may or may not be created, but this is what the scientists are thinking. Ally of Nottingham School says, “The new technologies will be very interesting and useful for our life.” She also thinks that some scientists are using their imaginations a little bit too much. Most of them might be here in the future, but some are just thoughts.” There are tons of more things that scientists are working on, like hover cars, cures, and even the Google of the future! These things are amazing to the untrained brain. One future technology that caught my eye is hover cars. The technologies these scientists or inventors are using are something I would never dream of. The designs of the fast moving cars are fancy or maybe laid back, but do we have the technology now? Or, will it be decades, 50 years, or longer until we get the luxury of these new and improved technologies? Maybe we don’t have it yet, but we sure can dream for a little longer. From swords to guns, we have been improving our weapons since mankind first started fighting. We have also made tanks and other war machines to aid us in our battles. Everything has been improving and will continue to improve. Albert Einstein once said, “As long as there are men, there will be war.” And as long as there are wars, we will keep finding new ways to defeat our enemies and improve our technology. Not only weapons have been improving, tanks and other vehicles are too. According to Howstuffworks.com, the Army wants a better tank then the common M1 Abrams. Even though the M1 Abrams is a good tank with heavy armor and can withstand against most anti-tank rounds, it weighs about 65 to 70 tons. The Army is looking for a smaller, faster tank that will be harder to hit. It will also be faster because it won’t have all the same heavy armor of the M1 Abrams. It wouldn’t have that armor because it would be harder to hit so there is no need for it. They are also giving it an active suspension system that will allow the tank to “crouch” behind cover. All of these future technologies that people are creating will help us in our future wars and defend us from our enemies. I-Phones and I-Pod Touches Becoming Our World!!! By Allyson LaFrance I-Phones and I-Pod Touches are the new gadgets of the century. These hand-held inventions were created by online Apple, Mac, and the user community. These are fun for everyone and anyone to use. They may be kind of pricey but they are so worth it. Over the past month, people have been buying them more because of the new gadgets they’ve added. Camera, compass, weather, phone, texting, games, music, YouTube, and the internet are the new gadgets that have been added. These I-Phones and I-Pod Touches are changing over time and some are getting banned. Throughout this world people are loving life and listening to music and having fun with this technology. This technology is useful and I hope many are used before they are gone! 11 Hybrids By Trisha Boucher There are tons of cars in the world, but there is one kind of car that runs on a battery instead of running on fuel. Just think instead of wasting so much money on gas a year, you could be driving a car that doesn’t use fuel at all. This car is a hybrid. Since the hybrid runs on a battery instead of fuel, it will help the environment by not releasing fossil fuels into the air. If everyone drove a hybrid, there wouldn’t be as much air pollution. There are many different kinds of hybrids such as the Toyota Prius, Ford Fusion, Volkswagen Jetta, and the Chevrolet Volt. There are also many more models of hybrids. If you are looking for a sporty hybrid car, there is the BMW 335d, the active Hybrid 7, and the Hydrogen 7. Maybe you could drive away with a Mercedes Benz, but this car isn’t priced low. If you want to drive out of the lot with this car, you need 88,000 dollars. There are also more Mercedes hybrids that will soon be on the road. There are hundreds of hybrids that you can choose from. There are Sedans, Coupes, Pickups, SUV’s, Luxury, and Vans. So go green and buy a hybrid. Computers vs. Laptops, by Haley Dustin Laptops are becoming what everyone wants but do they work as well as a regular computer? Laptops and computers are both getting smaller. While laptops get cheaper, computers are becoming less popular. Everyone wants the newer, cheaper and smaller laptops. Charles Babbage designed the first idea for a stored-program computer in 1830. Adam Osborne made the first laptop in 1981 and he called it "Osborne1". You can find laptops and computers at most stores that sell electronics. The smallest notebook is called Model 01 running Windows XP. It is about palm sized. Most laptops can last about three years before they start slowing down. While computers last about three to five years before they start slowing down. Computers may last longer, but laptops are more portable. No matter which you like better, laptops or computers; they both do the same things. They both type, you can get on the Internet, and you can play games on them. Both are very similar, but very different at the same time. 12 Entertainment Star Wars Saga Review District 9 Movie Review By: Lucas Karafelis by Erik Rolser The director of Star Wars is George Lucas. He successfully completed the six movies in the saga. This is what I am going to talk about. I will be talking the three new movies and the three original movies. In the three new movies, Anakin Skywalker is believed to be the chosen one to balance out the force. When he gets older, he falls in love with Senator Ama-Dala (he calls her Padme) and they secretly wed. Padme becomes pregnant and Anakin turns to the dark side, which is how Darth Vader comes to the story. Padme had two children, a boy (Luke Skywalker) and a girl (Leia). She hid them from each other and from Darth Vader and then she died. In the three original movies, Darth Vader wants to destroy the Republic. He finds out that one of his children is Luke Skywalker a little later on. So it starts with Luke who is living on Tatooine and buys two worker droids R2-D2 and C-3PO. When Luke was cleaning R2-D2, he triggered a message put in by Leia. The droids and Luke go to find the person that was talked about in the message and his name is Obi-Wan Konobi, a jedi knight. They hire a pilot and Obi-Wan tells Luke about the force on their mission to save Leia. Luke decides to become a jedi master. Luke is hunted down by his father (this is when Vader finds out Luke is his son from the force) and he gets away. Luke travels to find the jedi master, Yoda to help him train. He was then interrupted when his sister (which Luke did not know was his sister yet and was in love with her when he saw her) was kidnapped. Luke was tempted with the dark side, but Luke did not join Vader. They end up dueling and Luke wins the duel and finds out Vader is his dad. Then they duel again a little later and Luke wins again, but also wins his father’s heart to the good side. Vader then kills the Emperor and dies from his own injuries after. Then the second Death Star was destroyed and peace was restored to the force and the galaxy. Out at local theaters on August 14th was the movie District 9. This is a new science fiction movie. The main character is played by Sharlto Copley, who really did a great job in the movie. He fit into the role perfectly, showing great emotion throughout the movie. Overall, the movie was great. There was a lot of action. If you haven’t noticed, there haven’t been many sci-fi movies in a while. The movie is about an alien ship that stops at South Africa, but nothing comes out of it. No one went into the ship because they were frightened. Then one day, they went into the ship and found a bunch of creatures struggling from starvation. The country helps them, but also treats them disrespectfully. The aliens don’t like it at all, and start fighting back. The movie was amazing, but many wonder about a sequel. I would say there is going to be a District 10! What was great about this movie was that it really took you into another world. It made you feel like you were in the future. I would give this movie an A, because although it was great, there were almost too many battle scenes. They could definitely explain the story a little bit better. You should definitely put this movie on your “got to see” list! Hat Day!! Don’t forget to wear a hat on: October 16 and October 22 to raise money for the 5th Grade field trip to Plimoth Plantation! Only $1.00!! 13 Celebrity Knows Best By Brittany Linscott On September 13, 2009 at the Video Music Awards, Kanye West had an outburst on live television. Taylor Swift was accepting her award for Best Female Music Video. Kanye West jumped on the stage and said “I’m sorry... Beyonce had the best video of all time... All time." That is just not very nice. After a couple of seconds of booing, Taylor finished her speech and exited the stage. Later in the show, Beyonce gave her award to Taylor Swift so Taylor could have her moment. After the show, Kanye West decided to apologize on the incident. In the 2004 VMA'S, Kanye West said that he was robbed for the Best New Artist award. OZZY REVEALED! Avengers Anniversary Ozzy Osborne is one of the weirdest people in the world. He was said to have bitten off the head of a real live bat, but it actually turned out to be a hot dog painted black with cardboard wings glued onto the sides of it. No one knew this for a while until it got out through the press, of course. He was on a good roll while he was getting plenty of attention through the video game World of Warcraft because he did commercials with them. Then they were shown them less and less. Soon they weren’t really showing Ozzy at all, instead they started showing commercials with popular Hollywood stars such as: William Shatner, Mr. T, and the little Mini Me in the movie Austin Powers. I think Ozzy should just keep doing things to completely creep people out and be himself. He shouldn’t fake it and just go with the flow. He should be way out there beyond the ordinary, beyond no return. So I say, “Long live Ozzy.” By Robby Patnaude Avengers Assemble! That’s the call to summon the greatest team in the Marvel universe. Forty- six years ago, in 1963, Stan “The Man” Lee and the other talented people in the Marvel comics industry were being flooded with fan letters saying, “I love it when Iron Man or Spider Man appears in a Fantastic Four or Thor comic book.” Then, after many letters, they decided to give the fans what they wanted. In September, 1963, the first line of Marvel superheroes consisted of Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, Ant Man, and the Wasp. They did battle with the diabolical Loki (who is Thor’s half brother). Like always, the heroes won and they joined together to form the Mighty Avenger. Now, in September 2009, Stan’s great team is going on its 46th year, which is an impressive feat on its own. Some things that happened to them in just the first ten issues is that they added the legendary Captain America as a new leader, the Ant Man became the Giant Man, and Iron Man goes from an all gold suit of armor to a yellow and red suit. Wonder Man, one of the team’s newest members, betrayed them, but soon after sacrificed his life to save them. I myself loved the originals, but I’m ready for all new and exciting adventures in the near future. I hope that all the Avengers will go on for another 46 years, but no matter what year it is, every comic book reader and collector will always remember to cry, “Avengers Assemble!” 14 Kart-Racing Game Coming With a LittleBigPlanet Twist A Gamers Guide to Purchasing By Erik Gunderson By. Kamresse Bounds: Wownubcake (AKA Wownubcake.) LittleBigPlanet was a huge success, kicking off the new “Play, Create, Share” genre with a bang. Now a new game is needed for the fledging genre, and United Front Games is answering the call. Next year in the first quarter, this new game will be hitting stores worldwide. Modnation Racers is this game, a kart-racing game combined with the “Play, Create, Share” ethos. It starts with a wide character and kart customizer. You can craze up your character with anything you want. When Game Informer staff got their hands on the game, they created a C3PO copy and a reptilian Santa. You can also craze up your kart with awesome decals and sweet hotrod style engines. However, Game Informer staff also said that even if you slapped on a crystal powered engine on, you’d only have a cool looking kart. “No warp speed for you.” Then you head off to the tracks, where game play is partially weapon-based, like Mario Kart. There are also obstacles that you have to avoid, but it only adds to the fun. The fun only gets better. The game also includes a track-creator. Well, if you think, “Oh, another level creator. It’s the same old gimmick all over again,” then you’re wrong. It starts by laying down the track, adjusting curves and elevation as you go. When you finally close the circuit, the game adds the ground where the track is floating in midair. This way you can create corkscrew style ramps and insane jumps. Then the real fun begins. You can start by adding your obstacles, power-ups, weapons, speed pads, jump ramps etc. Then you can adjust the scenery of the course, from a mountain side village to a city in the sand, you can create any kind of scenery. You can even adjust the water table to make your race near the lake, ocean, or even over the water! It doesn’t take long to create a track, and its fun. If you’re a hardcore gaming fan, then you may be aware of some new sequels coming out soon in the gaming world. Titles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Left 4 Dead 2, and Assassins Creed 2 are on the must buy list. Whether or not to buy these games is an easy question to answer. Yes, you will buy these games and they will not disappoint. But there is another question that baffles you, a question that may not be just so easy to answer. This question is “should I buy the originals?” Lucky for you I am here to answer those questions for you, starting with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This stellar achievement made by Activision and Infinity Ward won top marks when it was first released. However, with Modern Warfare 2 coming out this November, you may be wondering if you should spend the extra cash on the first. My advice is not to buy. This is essentially because COD. Modern Warfare 2 is basically Modern Warfare 1 with a ton of extra stuff added in. Don’t get me wrong, the first game was great, but I just believe that you should spend your money on something that will entertain you for a much longer time. If you can’t wait until November and you need a great shooter now, I suggest picking up a copy of Gears of War 2 the Game of the Year Edition. The new and improved game comes with all the new multiplayer maps and a deleted level of the campaign for the small price of just forty bucks. Left 4 Dead Ah, I love the smell of rotting flesh in the morning! If you’ve ever played Left 4 Dead, you know what I mean. However, with Left 4 Dead 2 th coming out on November 17 , I bet you’re wondering if you should spend you cash on the original or just wait a couple of months for the sequel. WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!!! Left 4 Dead was a great game but its time has passed. With L4D2s new graphics and melee weapons, it will easily outshine its original. Even though Modnation Racers is an interesting game, it’s not the only game coming on the “Play, Create, Share” scene. LittleBigPlanet Portable is coming to PSP this holiday. Basically, it’s the same game with a new set of premade levels and PSP specific stuff. If you were a fan of the original game, then this game will also be a game you’ll like. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Assassins Creed Assassins Creed 2 is going to be Awesome, we all know that. With its brand new storyline and stellar graphics, who could resist buying this soon to be hit? As a major bonus, you get to use DIVINCHI’S FLYING MACHINE!!! However you still ponder whether or not to go get your mid evil on before you get your renaissance on. The answer is yes! In order to get the most out of Assassins Creed 2 you are going to need to know the back-story. This is exactly what Assassins creed can bring you. So what are you waiting for, go out and get your mid evil ON!!! 15 Style The History of Converse By Jillian Benham News flash! Converse shoes are back in style, and as far as I’m concerned, for good! The now expensive shoe started out as a cheap shoe for the “negro teens” during the ‘60s. All the black teenagers who could only afford this style of shoe brought it out to the world as a basketball shoe. This style became popular with white teenagers also, and soon, it was named the Chuck Taylor after a famous “all star” (also another name for the shoe) black basketball player. The company was named Converse All Stars and pretty soon the shoe (now in over 25 original colors) was popular among everybody. As the ‘80s and ‘90s ascended, the shoe became less popular, but along with other old outrageous fashions such as skin-tight jeans and big bangles, they became back “in style” around 2007. Shoes By Josie Fritz Have you seen all the shoes at Nottingham School? Everyone has Converse, Etnies, DC, Nike, Punk Rose, and Osiris shoes. Even the younger kids have them. Everywhere you go you see all these bright and colorful shoes with these big brand names that I have never heard of. Even outside of school like at the mall and the grocery store you can see all these types of shoes. I think that the shoes are a nice style for everybody. Soon enough we will be seeing everyone wearing nice warm boots from nice designer stores like Bear Claw, but I guess we have to see all the nice shoes everyone has to wear for now. Belts By Cheyenne Vandenbussche You can see very many different belts in the world including pink ones, black ones, and even bright yellow ones too! You can buy them in all different shapes and all different sizes, but there are also different styles. I love to wear my stud belt that I have had for about two years now. I just got a new one because the leather in my belt has gotten too worn out to wear. There also are belts with different colored studs, and belts with buttons and florescent studs, and button, rainbow, and piano belts. I want to buy a belt from Hot Topic, which is a store you might know about. It has piano keys on it and there is also a guitar one. It’s very colorful! And I love to go shopping and find nice belts and wear them to school or even just around the house so I can show them off and show everyone how cool they are! 16 What to Wear By Jess Gallant In this article you will briefly learn about what styles are in and who is wearing them right! Skinny Jeans: Skinny jeans are a killer style. You can match anything with them. They don’t just come in denim, but in bright vibrant colors. The answer may be no, but there is no need to worry, I will tell you. The top song was “Smells like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana. It is the opening song to the band’s 1991 breakthrough album Nevermind. Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain stated about “Smells like Teen Spirit” in 1994, “I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it. When I heard the Pixies for the first time, I connected with that band so heavily that I should have been in that band – or at least a Pixies cover band. We used their sense of dynamics, being soft and quiet and then loud and hard.” In 1994 the band members of Nirvana were Kurt Cobain, Dave Grohl, and Krist Novoselic. The song has been rockin’ ever since. Since the beginning of time there have always been music and music festivals. What’s different in these festivals is the music, the dancing, the way people are dressed, and act, but it was the occasion and reasoning for these festivals that are so different from our music concert/festivals nowadays. Some of the oldest music festivals were dated back to the B.C. era, for example in 4500 B.C. The Ancient Egyptians would hold religious rights, ceremonies, and political festivals which would all feature music and dance. Throughout the years our whole concept of music festivals has changed drastically. Now, we host music festivals and concerts for our personal enjoyment to dance and let loose. In the ancient time of Greece, and even in the 1600 and 1700s our idea of festivals and dance and even clothing were entirely different. That just goes to show that our minds are changing from our ancestors and that we are becoming more capable of realizing what people can do with their talents, and that we’re really expanding our knowledge and what we know of people to the break of extent. Indian Music By Carlee Beck When you think of India you may think of the Arabian nights, or the beautifully sun-kissed people, the snakes, or desert. But there is one thing that sets India apart from any other country and that is its music. India’s national anthem is a beautiful song called “Jana Gana Mana”. In the song they use beautiful voices and instruments alike. The peaceful and happy song is addressed to the Hindu god of India Sheeba. The song says that their god’s beauty can be found all throughout the India and in the heart of every person. I think that everyone that sings it is proud to sing it. I think it’s a pledge of love and faith in their god and their beautiful country. Another part of Indian music is Indian dance. In Indian dance the people use their hands a lot. The job of the women is to play a character or a part, become one with the music, become the puppet for the music’s strings, and tell the story. Different moves that the dancers make are to help tell the story. Most traditional Indian dancers have beautiful costumes. They decorate themselves with all sorts of rare and expensive jewelry, and beautiful scarves with many different colors. The next time you get the chance immerse yourself in the music of India and, if you want, dance and become part of the story. 18 History of Def Leppard Music Today and its Influence on Teens By Matt Cimmino By Nate Rouff Sheffield, England is where one of the best bands of the ‘80s started. Decade by decade impact and musical compositions started some of their greatest hits, and albums. The band started in the ‘80s and has continued to rock the ages to this very day. Some of their greatest hits include “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Photograph,” “Rocket,” and “When Love and Hate Collide.” Their recording studio was in Northampton, England. There they kicked off their Hysteria World Tour ’88 with 227 shows. They formed their band in Sheffield, England in 1977. They formed because of an inspirational one-handed drummer. Some other things about the band are that they originally spelled their name as Deaf Leopard and that their first concert was in a spoon factory and only six people went to it. Music today has a large influence on kids and teens. For example, people that listen to punk tend to dress up punk and it also affects what they like and dislike. When dealing with heavier things dark metal can even become Satanists. Rap is one of the worst types of music when it comes to teen violence. In the lyrics they too often degrade woman and other things like the police and they say bad things about them. The earlier they start to listen to hard music the more it influences them to do what it says in the songs. But then they use music to get away from the real world I find this to be fine. Some say music is a way to your soul and you know I think that is true. Also, doctors say that the music makes you dance and move because of the. Your brain thinks it’s your heart that’s beating there for you to get up and dance to the tunes. But don’t let music take over your life let it be part of it. 19 Health Local Nutritionists Fight against Obesity Atlanta- in order for the public to fight obesity, a group of nutritionists are pushing a one cent on all soda beverages. Even if it was a way to help the health reform bill, officials say that is not likely. A white house spokesman says president Obama will not put the tax on the bill. This wasn’t the only tax on sodas. Thirty-three states have put taxes on soda beverages. For example, a twelve-ounce can of soda has a five-cent tax. If the bill is approved, a national tax could add up to fifteen billion dollars in one year. The money will be used for health programs. “That’s a new concept that may take a while to gain acceptance”, says Joe Thompson, Arkansas’s Surgeon General. “Like tobacco, the states may be on it before the government takes federal action.” Swine Flu The swine flu pandemic was declared global on June 11th, of this year. It is said that the influenza will kill at the least 90,000 people this year. The swine flu has been reported in 70 countries and counting, including the entire United States. Swine flu, also known as H1N1, is highly contagious and even deadly. It causes flu-like symptoms like a fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills, and fatigue. There is a vaccine available to prevent to prevent H1N1, and the regular flu shot does not prevent the swine flu. This vaccine is recommended for anybody over the age of six months, especially for people between the ages of 25 and 64 because they are more susceptible to disease. Things that you can do to help prevent H1N1 from spreading are when coughing or sneezing cover your nose or mouth, avoid touching eyes, nose, and mouth, wash hands often, and stay at home whenever you are sick to prevent the spreading of germs. Swine flu is much more deadly than the common flu so if you don’t feel good and experience any of the above symptoms don’t try and hide it, tell a doctor, and get well soon!!! A New Kind of Medicine with no Side Effects By Raquel Bates There is a new kind of answer to common sickness in the U. S. There are no side effects, and it only takes a minute, it’s hand washing. There are great results that you might not know, like the more you wash your hands the less likely you are to get most common sicknesses. The more you wash your hands the more results you get. Some 2006 Minnesota studies show that 305 students that washed their hands four times a day had about 25% less colds and 50% less upset stomachs. When daycare teachers helped kids clean their hands and staff cleaned the area, there were 50% fewer illnesses at the daycare. A recent survey shows that a Nottingham 8th grade class of 59 students on average washes their hands on average five times a day, uses soap four times a day, and uses sanitizer / antibacterial foam two times a day. However, the averages don’t tell all. Some kids washed their hands up to 10 times a day and other kids didn’t even wash their hands at all. Washing your hands is crucial to your health. Everyone needs to wash his or her hands at least four times a day. Washing your hands is not just rinsing your hands under the water. You have to use warm water, a good amount of soap, scrub your hands really well, scrub between fingers, and scrubbing nails and wrists. You should do this at least one minute. Health is the best thing to have. Hand washing is the best kind of medicine. 20 Yoga, a Way to a Healthier Life Yoga, as you know, is a real stress reliever. Stress in your life can take away many years; yoga is a way to help. Just a few minutes a day could make your life easier. From the cobra to the tree pose, yoga is very easy and relaxing. All you need to do yoga is a mat, that’s it, no fancy do-dads or expensive trainers, which leaves more money in your pocket. A few years ago I started yoga, and now whenever I get stressed out or mad, I simply do a few poses and I feel better. My favorite pose is the upside down dog. Plus, there is no time limit or rush to start, you can do it whenever you like. Many other people do yoga too, like Shannon Quinn and Breanna Cole. Sometimes I try to get my dad to do it, especially when he gets mad at the Cleveland Browns. What I’m really trying to say is that you don’t have to do yoga, it’s just a choice to help your body and help you feel better. I just know that yoga works. It relieves stress, and makes you feel happier. Yoga is a better way to get healthy. The Disease behind the Disease By Jamie Roesener Mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders relating to the mitochondria, the organelles that are the "powerhouses" of the eukaryotic cells that compose higher-order life-forms (including humans). This disease is unimaginable hard to live with. Furthermore, the disease results in many other disorders including Diabetes, Autism, and Alzheimer’s. There is no cure for this disease and no case of Mito is the same. This disease is dangerous, and infections are multiplying. One in ten children is born to develop Mitochondrial Disease by age nine. One thing not to do is copy. People hate it when you copy. What you can do is take someone’s idea and make it your own. But whatever you do you can still take something boring and make it fun and unique. Fashion isn’t just about clothes. What you wear tells something about you and your personality. Accessories are a huge part of fashion. Necklaces, bracelets, shoes, and sweaters don’t just describe fashion. You can take almost anything and make it into clothing, like plastic or even newspaper. Fashion is important in some peoples’ lives more than others. Like some people could care less about fashion, but to others, fashion is their life. There are different kinds of fashion also, such as modern or 70’s. You can make up your own type of fashion, When it comes to fashion it has its limits, just be fun, be creative, be yourself. My parents don’t like my group of friends very much. I have been trying to convince them that they are good people. I like them a lot because they are always there for me, and they make me laugh. Just recently, we were at a party and some of them were doing drugs. They wanted me to do some too, but I refused. I’m afraid that if my parents find out, I’ll be in big trouble. I have just started to really trust them, and my parents were even starting to like them. I’m starting to think my parents were right about them, but I have no idea what to do. Do I tell my parents, ditch my friends, or ignore the situation completely? I’m so lost. Please help me. ~confusedoptimist87 Ask Aimee By Aimee Hartwell Dear Sally2017, I think that you should try talking to your boyfriend if there is something wrong, he might be having a problem in his family. If things still don’t work out then break up with him. Hope everything works out! Sincerely, Aimee :D Dear DogLover123, I think that you should definitely stand up for your dog even though he has funny teeth. Your dog doesn’t know what’s right and wrong, so don’t punish him. Even though your dog has funny teeth you can still appreciate him for who he is. Don’t lie about your dog; just tell your friends that even though he has funny teeth you love him. You should never judge a book by its cover!! Sincerely, Aimee :D Dear Confusedopist87, I think that you should tell your parents what happened, but also inform them that they are nice people and they are really great friends. If they don’t understand then you should tell them that they support you and that was a mistake that could have happened to anyone. Tell your parents that they are your friends and you like them for who they are and not the decisions they make. Everyone makes a bad decision in their life at least once and your friends just need some support from you. Hope your parents understand! Comics 24 By Jamie Roesener How about we stay home today?
