I’m hoping your year is more than you expected. I’d like to thank our Board of Directors and our many volunteers for a successful first half of 2015. We’ve recently held a focus group this past spring to plan our new initiatives, review our mission, and plan new events. The main focus was ”Why Our Members Join”, and our outcome was… We serve our members by our four values: Connection • Education • Service • Visibility The relationships we build through the chamber become our “partners on demand” for each of us. We’ve held many successful events so far in 2015, including the Health and Wellness Festival, which was held at Brookfield High School for the first time. This allowed our students aka future leaders to participate, and it was also open to the staff, parents and public. Our Tri-Chamber Mastery Series offered a variety of speakers, and it generated rave reviews. It provided our members the tools and resources to grow their business while remaining inspired both personally and professionally. Members from three Chambers of Commerce (Brookfield, Bethel, and Newtown) came together to meet each other and build new relationships and connections as well. The Lunch ‘N Net series is on-going and serves as another avenue to invest in “you”, where you can be educated in an easy and open format. Our Business Gatherings continue to allow our members the ability to build connections and be visible. As always, this serves all our members and guests. We held a wonderful event at the Brookfield Playhouse that including dinner provided by Chef Rody and an outstanding “Godspell” performance. We were excited to have the Godspell cast join the fun at the Memorial Day Parade, as well as our very own Miss CT Teen USA, Brookfield Senior Lauren Ralston. The town is excited as we finalize Brookfield Town Park, which will be ready by month end, just in time for summer fun. Soon it will be time for the Concert in the Park series, so watch for more information as the chamber-sponsored evening there will once again offer chamber members an opportunity to join in the fun and showcase your business to the town. Continue to start your day with a “WIN” standing for “What’s Important Now” attitude as we hold the power and vision to WIN. I would encourage all of you to do just that and participate. He has served three and sometimes 4 generations within a family. Dr. Reiss, originally from Long Island, attended the University of Missouri where he played baseball and graduated with a BS degree from Adelphi University. He received his DDS degree from New York University College of Dentistry. The opportunity to move to Connecticut became available soon after graduation because of a change in state licensing exams that allowed him to take one certification test, which was recognized in CT as well as in NY. Longing for a great quality of life…and to be closer to skiing… Steve settled in first Danbury and then Brookfield where he and wife Elsa raised 2 daughters, Sara and Rachel. Dr. Reiss’s goal in setting up his dental office was to provide outstanding and caring dentistry with the most up to date techniques and technology. He knew that he wanted to have an in town business in order to become a part of the fabric of the town and be present for his family. Dr. Reiss is an avid gardener and his home has been a visitation stop for the local garden club. The grounds around his office show that same love. “It’s OK to have weeds in your garden and in your life” is one of his mantras, as he points out that everyone just needs to slow down and appreciate every moment and each other more. His practice currently houses 2 other full time dentists and a periodontist. About 2 years ago he added Annamarie Faubel as his Executive Director. Together, they make quite a team as Annamarie handles the facility, IT, compliance and HR functions which frees up Dr. Reiss to be present for his patients. It is all about the people for Dr. Reiss. As he put it, “Molars are important, but the PEOPLE behind them are phenomenal and take precedence.” His patients become his friends, his family, and his primary concern. The values he brings to his practice include kindness, communication, compassion and education. He wants to make the process of dental health fun and stress free. Dr. Reiss has been appointed by the Governor as 1of 6 Dentists who serve on the State of Connecticut Dental Commission. He believes everyone deserves adequate care and will accommodate any patient to make sure their dental needs are met. The majority of his staff have been with him for decades. His key to success is to surround yourself with the best and most talented people. To be able to trust people and to delegate without hesitation is critical. Meet Chef Rody. She is fairly new to the Greater Danbury Area, originally from Montreal Canada, now living in Ridgefield. Rody is a Chef who put herself through Culinary School while raising two, now grown boys. Her training is in the French Culinary Cuisine. After graduating, Chef Rody worked in various restaurants, including Universel Desjeuners, a popular restaurant in Downtown Montreal. Here she got her first experience as an Executive Chef, setting up the kitchen, ordering supplies, cooking, creating new menu items and managing the kitchen staff. A couple of years later, Rody left the restaurant business to pursue her passions, which led her to become a Personal Chef. Rody founded My Chef To Go, and set up shop here in Brookfield in 2014. Services include a Personal Chef Service which aims to “Make Your Dinner Simple”. Cooking is done in the client’s home. Chefs and their kitchen helper grocery shop, cook, portion dinners in single serving containers, and clean up the kitchen. All you need to do is heat and eat. A company philosophy is cooking from scratch. They use original recipes and fresh ingredients purchased by the Chef that morning. Personal Chefs are not like Private Chefs. Rather than working with one client, Personal Chefs work with many clients making the cost more affordable. Preparations of five complete meals for 4 people, including shopping and clean up take approximately 6 hours. The company charges $60/ hour. Chefs and their kitchen helpers travel and work as a team. The Chefs must be certified. The company is bonded, insured and all employees go through a background check. Brookfield Chamber of Commerce 5 { Four Corners Update Development is alive and kicking in the Four corners / brookfield town center. there are no fewer than 12 areas where there is planning, preparation and outright construction in progress. o ne only needs to turn onto laurel hill road to see noticeable development. the “residence at laurel hill” appears prominently in the construction of 72 apartments in three different buildings. Across the street, “laurel hill townhomes” (13) has begun construction. perhaps the most anxiously awaited of the developments is “brookfield Village”, the project at 800 Federal road that will have frontage on both Federal and station roads, replacing the buildings currently on the site. Demolition of the first building is scheduled for mid-summer, with a plan to relocate the remaining businesses as the project builds out. For example, Mother earth Gallery, which has memorably served our community for the past 25 years, is completing a move to new Milford, and subway will soon relocate to a vacant space close to rickyl’s restaurant. When complete, brookfield Village will consist of 72 apartments above 22,000 square feet of retail area. the developer of the project, brookfield Village llc, has recently received chAMp (competitive housing Assistance for Multifamily properties) loan commitments totaling $11.6 6 www.brookfieldchamber.org million from chFA (connecticut housing and Finance Authority) and the ct Department of housing. A less publicized development has recently been approved for the parcel on 101-103 laurel hill road, close to station road. Apartments over retail are also planned for this site, but this development may not occur for a while. the project will consist of 99 apartments and 8600 square feet of retail space. this is significant because it will expand the retail sector to laurel hill road. to the north of the four corners will be two major developments. on the parcel where the barnyard stood their outbuildings and gazebos will be replaced by 100 apartments, and the old peter’s imports site is also available for multi-family development. For the past several years, a new home for the brookfield library has been discussed. some residents have suggested (through a recent study of the area) that one of the components of the Four corners should include the library or other civic space. our library is a community gem, but has long outgrown its current facility, so moving it to the Four corners area is a viable possibility. } importantly, as the Four corners area develops, the underlying infrastructure is expected to keep pace. the town recently received confirmation of a $797,000 grant from the connecticut local capital improvement program (locip), an organization that raises money through the sale of bonds and distributes funds to municipalities to reimburse the cost of eligible local capital improvement projects. this grant will be used for curbing, lighting and other “streetscape” expenses. the town is working with the state Dot to modify the area of the Federal road / route 25 rights-of-way, but work will not commence until approval is received. the developments taking place the Four corners area this year are noteworthy. the complexity of each of these projects, from planning to financing to engineering to design and finally construction is daunting. We extend our thanks to all involved in the area’s revitalization as we move forward to develop the Four corners into the center of activity we envision. Working in conjunction with brookfield high school, the health Fair was rebranded and combined with the health Day annually put on by bhs to create the brookfield Wellness Festival. proceeds were to be split between the chamber of commerce and bhs for their hosA team (health professionals of the Future) to fund their trip to the national competition. 48 vendors participated. With exposure to over 1,000 students and faculty during the first time slot and another 200 participants from the general public, the response from the vendors was overwhelmingly positive.
