chairman’s comments
There are numerous international photographic competitions
around the world but we think of our Wilmington International
Exhibition of Photography (WIEP) as one of the finest. It also happens
to be one of the oldest in North America, since it was started in
1934 by one of the oldest camera clubs in the country, now called
the Delaware Photographic Society. One of the things that stands
out about WIEP is that, in addition to projected images, we process
and judge photographic prints. These include large prints (16x20
inches, including mount, if any). Large Print competitions have
become rare around the world. They are now almost an endangered
species in the United States, even though the photographic print is
a more challenging medium than the projected image, and many
photographers believe a superior one.

Processing prints entered into competition is a demanding
task. Prints must be logged, checked against entry documentation,
sorted, tracked, displayed in the light box for judging, sorted again,
and ultimately prepared for exhibition by matting and framing
the accepted ones. Award-winning prints must be photographed
for the catalog. Return prints must be packaged up and shipped
back to their authors. This process requires a dedicated team of
volunteers, and I am happy to say that the WIEP team pulled it off
again without a hitch.
A prestigious international exhibition also requires experienced
judges. This year, some of our judges traveled from far away to
judge our competition. Sophia Cheung and CK Nam came all the
way from Hong Kong; Stan Bormann from Arizona; Janet Bigalke
and Mike Carroll from Florida (the latter interrupting a shooting
assignment at Disney World); Don Brown from North Carolina;
John Larson from Iowa; and two judges from within the state of
Delaware. My thanks to them are as heartfelt as the thanks to our
DPS volunteers.

Finally, I would like to thank the South Jersey Camera Club,
the PSA Mid-Atlantic Chapter and the Delaware Valley Council of

PICTORIAL PRINTS
Stan Bormann, APSA, EPSA, Surprise,
AZ and Pine River, MN. Stan is the retired
president of a small company that was a
leader in developing and manufacturing
ambulatory heart monitoring devices.
He was the founding president of Grand
Photos in AZ, a 400-member club and
the 70-member West Valley Photo Club.
Stan has also served as president of
the Arizona Camera Club Council. He
joined PSA in 2003 and became an
active volunteer in 2009, serving as
Chi-Kwong Nam, Ray Firmani and
First Vice Chair and then as Chairman
Stan Bormann
of the Pictorial Print Division (PPD). He
is now the Conference VP of PSA, a
Board position. Stan is an active world traveler who says he once took pictures while
traveling but he now travels to take pictures. His interests in photography are varied,
but he loves old world architecture and wildlife photography. He currently has three
stars in both PPD Small Color and Small Monochrome; one star in both PPD Large
Color and Monochrome; and over 300 acceptances in Projected Image and Nature.

Janet Bigalke, FPSA, Naples, FL. Jan
has been doing serious photography
since the early ‘80s and has been a
member of PSA since 1992. Her varied
interests in photography include creative
and open Color Projected Image, Nature,
Photojournalism and Photo Travel.
Since relocating to FL ten years ago,
she has concentrated on nature and
landscapes because of the numerous
opportunities in the Sunshine State.
Prior to moving there, Janet lived in WI
and judged multiple years for the PSA

Wisconsin Circuit. She has numerous

acceptances in Nature and Color
Projected competitions. She belongs to
the Naples Camera Club (NCC) where she
was awarded Photographer of the Year in 2007-2008 and again in 2009-2010. NCC is
active in the PSA Interclub competitions and, as club Program and Competitions VP,
Janet assisted them in establishing rules for competition that were aligned with PSA
guidelines. She recently completed two terms as PSA Conference VP and is currently
serving as the PSA Image Collections VP, a Board position.
Ray Firmani, FDPS, Elsmere, DE. Ray is retired from the DuPont Company where
he was an industrial photographer for over 46 years. He also worked throughout
the years as an accomplished wedding and portrait photographer. His photographic
interest began in high school as a newspaper photographer. He was also a scholarship
student at the Wilmington Academy of Art until leaving to serve as a B-17 bomber
pilot during WWII. For the past 57 years, he has been a member of the DPS, where
he has always been active in leadership roles and involved in activities; has been
honored as a Fellow; and, in 2013, as a Lifetime Member. Throughout the years he
has been a leading monochrome printer and continues to work in his darkroom. He
co-founded a group of printers who meet monthly to review prints and to discuss
modern printing techniques. Monochrome pictorial photography is Ray’s preferred
medium, especially photography which aims primarily at emotional and intellectual
effects and proves that photography is a medium capable of producing art.
Don Brown, APSA, Charlotte, NC. Don is a retired USAF Officer and Information
Technology Corporate Executive and Program Manager who grew up in Western
Kentucky (Paducah) and served 24 years in the U.S. Air Force. He retired from the
USAF in 1982 after serving the previous 5 years as an Associate Professor of Computer
Sciences at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He then joined
Computer Sciences Corporation and retired again in July 2005 as Vice President of the
Government IT Consulting business unit. A multiple award-winning photographer and
avid exhibitor since 2012, Don was President of the Carolinas’ Nature Photographers
Association for five years; is an active member of the North American Nature
Photographers Association; and a member of PSA’s Board of Directors. Don’s primary
love is nature photography – landscapes, wildlife and plant life, but he is beginning to
explore other areas of expression with a special interest in fine art printing. His blog

Chi-Kwong Nam, FPSA, EPSA, Hong Kong. CK is a real estate appraiser in Hong
Kong, specializing in urban redevelopments. In 1973, his life-long hobby started
at his high school club where he developed and printed his first roll of black and
white film. At his first attempt in a students’ salon, he was awarded a silver trophy.
CK is active in the Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association (PSEA) in Hong Kong,
being their past Salon Chairman, past President, and now serves as their Honors
Chairman. He has exhibited at annual PSA-recognized exhibitions and other worldclass events sponsored jointly with PSA, serving as Executive Chairman of Who’s
Who Masterpieces (1951-2013) in Hong Kong in 2013 and assisted in organizing
Master Kan Hing-fook’s Print Exhibition at PSA’s San Francisco Conference in 2012,
and PSA’s Best of Hong Kong and Macau shown at the Toronto Conference in1999.
CK joined PSA in 1990 and since 1993 has been part of the Delaware Photographic
Society family as an AWIEP. He was in the Top Ten of Who’s Who lists (PPD-Large
Color) for six years, 1990-1995. He currently serves on three PSA committees:
Honors, Public Relations, and Translations.
Sophia Cheung, FPSA, MPSA, Hong Kong. Sophia loves capturing beauty, nature
and scenery everywhere. She has entered international exhibitions and was one of
the world’s Top Ten exhibitors in Large Color Prints from 1990 to 2002. Listed first
world-wide in 1994, she was the first Chinese female to attain this honor. A PSA Life
Member, Sophia received the Country Representative of the Year Award in 1999 and
the International Representative of the Year Award in 2013. Currently, she serves as
a PSA Liaison Officer for Hong Kong, on the International Understanding Through
Photography (IUTP) Award Committee and on the Translation Committee. At the
local level, she serves as Group Entries Leader in International Salons Mailing of the
Photographic Salon Exhibitors Association (PSEA). She also assisted with the Who’s
Who Masterpieces Exhibition (2013); PSA’s Best of Hong Kong and Macau (1999); and
Vision Beyond (2000). She has been invited to judge in international salons, monthly
competitions and honor panel assessments since 1992.

PHOTOJOURNALISM
Michael Carroll, Editorial Photographer, Pepperell, MA. Mike is a
freelance photographer and media
design
consultant
specializing
in
corporate and editorial photography. He
travels extensively throughout Romania,
Hungary, Kosovo, Ukraine and the Czech
Republic, writing and photographing for
American and European publications.
He has focused on health care,
environmental and community issues.
Mike has written four photography

books: Picturing the Possible, the story
Gary Emeigh
of Romanian children’s relief; Circus
Dreams; Commonwealth of Golfers;
and Disneyland Through the Decades. He was featured in the documentary film
Handheld 2010 documenting his Romanian relief efforts over a 20-year period. He
is the founder and current president of the Romanian Children’s Relief Foundation,
and continues to travel to use his photography to promote the mission. More of his

Photographic Society of America provides the following medals: from the Projected Image Division (PID),
a Gold Medal for Best Projected Image, a Silver, and a
Bronze for Best Creative; from the Pictorial Print Division (PPD), Gold Medals for Best Monochrome Print, Best
Color Print and Best Small Print, Silvers, and Bronze for
Best Creative in each of these print classes; and from
the Photojournalism Division (PJD), Gold Medals for “Best Photojournalism Projected Image” and “Best Photojournalism Print,” Silvers for “Best
Human Interest” and Bronze for “Best Humor” in each section.
Mid-Atlantic Chapter of PSA donates six medals,
one for the next best image in each section.
Gary Emeigh, Photojournalist, Milford, DE. Gary began his newspaper career as
a reporter/photographer with the Delaware State News in Dover right after high
school. It was a five-day a week hot metal mix newspaper later moving into a new
building with a Goss full-color offset press. After eight years he left the State News to
pursue aviation, delivering airplanes for Cessna throughout the country, crop-dusting
and flying UPS air freight. That ended during the fuel shortage and Gary returned to
the Delaware State News, working as chief photographer from 1976 until 1988. In
1988 Gary was hired by The News Journal of Wilmington, DE where he remained for
26 years until staff cuts pushed him into retirement last year. He continues to fly as
a volunteer search and rescue pilot with the US Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol and
has begun shooting again for the Delaware State News.
Delaware Photographic Society, founded in 1931 as

Bronze Medals, plus Honor Ribbons, in each division
for photographic excellence.
South Jersey Camera Club (SJCC) donates a Gold
Medal to an outstanding nature projected image in
Projected Images and in Large Color Prints.
John Larson, Jr., APSA, MPSA, Burlington, IA. John is a retired engineer, having
worked for 38 years with General Electric and Marathon Electric managing engineering
computer efforts, primarily CAD and CAM. He has also retired recently from teaching
math at Southeastern Community College. John’s involvement with photography
began as a hobby with some classes at a local camera club in 1991. He joined PSA in
1994 while living in Wisconsin and then in Iowa. His first digital imaging adventures
were with slides scanned to CDs, after which he moved to a digital camera, even
carrying it while skiing. His background allowed him to blend sports and photography,
and now computers and photography. He enters PSA exhibitions and has a Galaxy 2
in Color Projected Image, Galaxy 5 in Photojournalism (PJ) and four stars in the former
Electronic Imaging Division. He is the Chairman of the PJ Division, and directs the PJ
Quarterly Competition and the PJ Study Groups. His images can be seen at http://

Delaware Valley Council of Camera Clubs donates
four DVCCC medals, one in each print section for an
outstanding image by a member of a camera club in
the Council. The DVCCC includes clubs in the tri-state
area of Delaware, Southeastern Pennsylvania, and
New Jersey.

People’S Choice Awards
Each year, attendees at the Exhibition are invited to vote by ballot
for their favorites among all the prints displayed; one by a local
photographer and one by a photographer from outside the region.
Delaware Photographic Society Gold Medals are awarded. The Peoples’

WIEP Honors are earned through accumulated jury acceptances of prints
and projected images compiled annually. Ten acceptances over the current
ten year period are required for Associate status. Associates achieve Senior
status with ten additional acceptances, for a total of twenty, without time
limitation. Associates who accumulate a total of 50 or more acceptances
are named Fellows of the exhibition, and those who achieve 100 or more
acceptances are awarded Senior Fellowship status. New Associates are only
listed for the year that they qualify. Entrants with ethics violations do not
qualify for WIEP Honors. PSA honors are listed according to the current PSA
directory.
