LSPBC had a good representation of cars at the Dallas Convention Centers Ridez of the
Timez show on August 16th with 12 cars on display. This show is put on in conjunction
with a Health and Fitness show so the participants and attendees come in wide varieties, just
check out the pics in this edition of the newsletter of the cars and the alternative events held.

Quick Times is the official publication of the Lone Star
Performance Buick Club (Chapter of the GS Club of America).

A Word From the Vice-President
It's been a good year so far let's end it with a big
bang! No no no no blown head gaskets please :) The
cooler air is coming let's get 'em to the track.
More on that later.
Going out on the Power Tour this past summer was a
blast, I'm sure you will enjoy the coverage in this issue that Victor has provided. Fellow member Jack Laswell was
interviewed by Musclecar Review maginzine during the tour and
will have a article in the mag soon on his 1971 GSX.
Myself, Tina and Raph Haber were interviewed in Topeka, KS
and had our cars posted on the Hot Rods website which was pretty
cool.
For those that made the Ridez of the Timez car show at the DCCC
back in August, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedules to get your cars in the show. A special thanks goes out to Rob
Downey, Jeff Horsman & Victor Segovia for helping with the set
up of the convention center room and to everyone that helped on
the judging. Just check out the muscle cars! :)
We will have a club meeting coming up on Saturday Oct. 25th
3pm at Spring Creek BBQ on Midway rd just south of Beltline in
Addison. We will be discussing a Dyno event, Xmas Party (we
still need a location) and Noble. Please be there to share your .02.
We need everyone to attend please. We will also discuss Officers
for next year and we should have a update from Morgan about our
carshows for 2009. He and I have both been approched about having a new location for our shows next year. Stay tuned for more.
Hey club members,
Hard to believe this is already our third issue
of the year. So far we have had a great time at
our club events and I just want to
thank everyone who has participated and
helped out with the car shows, races, website and newsletters. We would not have this awesome club without our
great and wonderful members and all of their support. All of
you guys and gals go the extra mile to show how much
you appreciate our club by supporting our events. Thanks to
all of your families as well for letting you participate and
sometimes joining you.
A lot of thought goes into planning and making sure that
when it's all said and done it's all about having fun. We have
a great team that spends lots of time helping with the newsletter to help spread the news. I just want to say thanks
to everyone once again and let's finish out the year by enjoying one another's company while showing off what we're
about "Going Fast with Class"...........Go Buicks!!!!
PINKS update The block is still at the machine shop getting done,
nothing really to report at this time. It will probably be late next yr
before this car is up and going. Stay tuned.

Have a Battery Drain Problem? By David Ellis
Battery Drain? … If your radio clock stays on with the key off, then read on.
If the Radio Clock stays on with the key off, then if your car sits for around 3 days or more, it will not start. So what
you end up doing is you jump start your car and then go driving around for fun and to charge your battery. To fix
this problem you can just disconnect the battery each time you put the car up, but that is a pain. This battery drain
drove me nuts and so I put lots of time into tracking this problem down. I knew that the drain was around 350 milliamps and it have to be something that happened due to age to the car to cause the problem OR when the car was
new everyone would have just taken them back to the dealer to fix the problem. In other words the car did not
come with this problem. I did pull fuses until I found the problem circuit and it was on the CLK fuse. The CLK has
lots of circuits on it and is one of the two power sources to the Radio. This circuit remembers the radio stations,
time and the radio will not work with out it. I remembered that GM car radios that have a clock go off, if you turn the
key off, and you can push in the volume knob to get the time with the key off. So I went back to the Internet to
search for problems with the GM radio clock. I found the there are tons of Turbo cars out there with this same problem and lots of guy with the wrong ideas as to what is wrong. I found that there is a circuit that controls the clock
that some guys had this fixed by a radio shop but they really didn’t know what was fixed. I have had this problem
for years and I wanted to know all about it. I searched more on the internet and found one small email talking about
a transistor in the radio causing the problem. I traced the guy down and called him in Kansas and he told me which
transistor it was. I then pulled my radio and replaced the shorted transistor and clock goes off when the key is off. I
can let my car sit for weeks and it will still start, and it’s a healthy start. There is now no battery drain period. So I
found the problem and here is how to fix it. Look at the rear of the radio in the first picture and you will see what
looks like two Pac-Man and above the lower Pac-Man is a cut out or cave and just inside the cave you will see the
little problem transistor in the second picture. Go to a Fry’s or any electronics supply store and buy one NTE232
transistor, should cost $.49 or so. You will need to take the metal covers off the radio and remove the old transistor
(NOTE the flat side of the transistor) using a pencil type solder iron by touching the ends of the soldered wires
while lightly pulling on the transistor from the other side. If you do this right and are lucky there will probably three
little holes that you can put the leads from the new transistor in. Leave the leads on the new transistor a little
longer that the old one you just pulled out and replace with flat side facing the same way as the old one. Touch the
ends from the other side with the soldering pencil and add a small amount of solder on each of the three leads. Do
not leave soldering iron on any lead very long as heat will travel down the wire and destroy the transistor.

Did You Know? (Fall Edition)
This is the 2nd installment of “Did You Know”. I’ve been studying the T cars since 1985 and
have seen a lot of different types of in my hay day. I’ve been going to car shows since I was
a kid and the GS Nationals since 1993 and have seen almost every type and color ever
made. I’m still learning about these cars and really enjoy knowing more. Unfortunately it’s all
Turbo car trivia because that’s all I know, some of you non-turbo folks can submit items for
those cars. I hope you like it!
Some of the T cars, GN’s, and GNX’s were used for FBI purposes. In 1986 and 1987 the FBI purchased
an inconsiderable
amount of vehicles
for their agents……
I’ve heard 80 or so.
I n 1986 they made no Limited turbo cars, they were all T
Types that were low or high optioned out. The reason I
say that is because the Limiteds had even more options
available on them in 1987 such as opera lights and cornering lamps as shown in the blue car.
The T Type name came into affect in 1983 and went away after 1986. 1978 models through1982 were
called Sport Coupes and in 1987 they were T Packages or Turbo T’s. T Type was actually for the
“touring” suspension and not “turbo”. Buick did make T Packages with out the V6 3.8 litre turbo engine in
1987

In 1987 all Limited Cars
were not Chrome Packages, some came with
the black trim….column
shift in all of them.
In 1986 the Grand National's grill was different from the T Type's grill. Most people think they are the
same but they are not. The T Type grill has every 9th upright bar wider than the ones in between, where
on the GN they are all the same going across.
In 1986 they made no chrome
package turbo cars….they
were all black trim.
On the Limited Turbo cars, the passenger dash area illuminates.
The dash plaque that reads “Buick” and the “Regal Limited” along
with the thin border line that surrounds it has a glow to it.
The same man who designed the turbo 6 logo also
designed the Lexus logo….Rollin Sanders….A.K.A Molly.
Riviera Owners Association Gathering
May 18th, 2008, Riviera Day 2008 – The ROA members in North Texas celebrated Riviera Day
with a gathering at Martha Pointer Park in Carrollton, TX. The weather turned out great as did
the members who attended and brought their Rivieras.
We had a wide variety of Rivieras represented including: a beautiful 1999 Silver Arrow #169
owned by Larry Carter, 1982 convertible owned by Kenneth Higginbotham, who’s about to begin
an interior restoration, a blue 1963 owned by Pete Lempert who’s just starting his restoration, a
stunning all black custom 1965 GS owned by Bobby and Ann Kennedy, Don Rundgren’s white
1963 and my 1984 T-type.
Others who stopped by were Morgan Farrington, who owns an 83 convertible and Jake Christmas with his custom black 1963. Jake also brought along his friend and fellow Riviera owner Jacob Jacquez. Hopefully Jake & Jacob will consider joining ROA. There were even a few curious BCA members, who also
stopped by to view our cars.
ROA member Larry Allen from the San Antonio area stopped in with pictures of his garage that’s been converted to
look like the outside of an old Sinclair station and is decorated inside like an old timey diner that houses his cars
along with real diner soda fountains! ROA member Kelly Fuller showed up to talk to us about his leather & plastics
restoration business that we could all use and local members Fred Ingerson and his wife stopped by to visit and
view the cars.
We all had a great time, getting to know each other and checking out the cars. Bobby and Ann Kennedy have offered to host a cook out at their house in the next few months. We missed those of you who couldn’t attend but
hope you will attend our next gathering. If anyone has any ideas on future events or can host one please let me
know. And as always if anyone needs anything let me know. If I don’t have the answer I can point you in the right
direction to get it.

Hot Rod Power Tour 2008
The Hot Rod Power Tour in June was one
of the best times I have experienced in a
long time. I highly recommend taking the
tour if you have the opportunity. The
LSPBC had a few members take part in the
tour this year which made it that much more
enjoyable. We saw hundreds of Hot Rods
and almost every make and model anywhere and everywhere. Hot Rods, Hot Rods and more Hot Rods combined
with driving and touring equaled fun, fun, fun for everyone!
We met in Little Rock the first day and took part in our own
personal parade which consisted of about 200 - 300
cars. We started at the fair grounds, then traveled to downtown Little Rock, then on to the river walk. We lined up
our cars together to represent Buick in style, representing
"Fast with Class".
The next day we participated in a massive car show which
consisted of so many Hot Rods that it would be almost impossible to count them all. I have never seen so may Hot
Rods together as a whole for an event in my life. It was truly
fantastic. To pump us up even more Hot Rod Magazine had
all the big time vendors there. Vendors like Edelbrock,
Flowmaster, Napa, Mother’s, Nitto, Sunpro, Royal Purple
and many, many more that gave away free goodies at their
camps. I usually don’t get too excited by the freebie bags
given out but these were not the regular run of the mill freebies. They actually gave out good stuff…The vendors really
gave us something to smile about.
Between all the venders, cars, and events going on, there is
no way that one could do it all in one day but we sure tried.
We enjoyed ourselves the rest of the day and prepared for
the following day as that is what we went for. We were all
pumped up about rolling out to Springfield, Mo. The drivers
meeting took place around 8:00 am and then we proceeded
to roll to our journey. The convoy of Hot Rods was so long
that it took about 2 to 4 hours to get everyone out of the fair
grounds. We proceeded to head north on highway 65
through the Ozarks of Arkansas. I have never seen such
pretty back roads. I am still impressed by how breathtaking
the scenery was that we were admiring. When you have
awesome, beautiful scenery multiplied with hundreds of Hot
Rods going down the same path you are heading, it just
makes it seem like you’re in car heaven.
There were hundreds of restaurants and gas stations along
our 3 hour drive and it seemed like every one had their parking lot filled with muscle head freaks like ourselves.
We would stop purposely just so we could see some of the
cars and to soak in the awesome display of vehicles passing
by. We then finally rolled in to Springfield where we had a
massive car show waiting on us at their fair grounds. We had
more cars from that area that were going to join the leg
which made it that much more fascinating. The people in
Springfield and throughout the whole experience were just
too cool. Nobody looked down on you for what you drove, if
anything, they were enthused to see you out in what you
brought. We enjoyed ourselves at the car show and saw almost every American Muscle car available to see.
We then went to our hotels to rest for the next leg which
took us to Topeka, KS. We woke up to a drizzly day and
proceeded to go on the next leg. The drizzle turned into
rain but the tour went on regardless of the weather. People in
the T buckets were just getting drenched but still loving the
awesome environment. Rain or no rain nobody cared, we
were all having fun and the wetness was not going to slow
us down or keep us from having our fun. We did travel at a
slower pace to make sure we all made it to Topeka safely
where once again we went to a designated area that would
hold all of us. By now the tour had multiplied and grown
with more Hot Rod Power Tour Enthusiast's. We enjoyed
the car show and we just happened to be at a race track
where they were letting you run your vehicle down the track
for free. We had a blast and by now we outran the rain so we
were enjoying life. We met some cool people on the way and
really enjoyed ourselves and made the best of the 3 days we
went out of the 7-day tour. Once again, I just want to say
that if you have a Hot Rod of some type this is one journey
you must make because it was truly a high for me and my
wife. We really had fun and really recommend it to anyone
who drives a muscle car. I was just disappointed that we
could not go on to Lincoln , NE and end up in Madison,WI
by day eight.
