A Word From the President
A Word From the Vice-President
Well it looks like another year is in the
books, our club has just completed it’s
19th year in existence! Not to shabby if I
do say so myself.
Looking forward to year #20. Maybe
something special for 2009 to celebrate our 20th
year? Stay tuned for that.
We had our annual Christmas party at Patrick &
Deanna’s home in Forney. Thanks guys, I know I
had an awesome time. Everyone brought a dish, I
don’t think there was much left, I gained about
10lbs. :)
The exchange gift game was a big hit, lot’s of
stealing if you know what I mean. :) Congratulations to all of our 2008 Season winners, you guys
did a excellent job.
Hello members, I would like to take
this opportunity to say thanks to everyone for a wonderful 2008 year. I hope
everyone enjoyed it as much as I did.
We started it out with the AutoRama
car show in the early part of the year. We also participated in more indoor shows along with the outside shows. We had lots of good racing in at our
monthly events as well as the Buick vs Ford in
Oklahoma. We took some very fun road trips this
year as a club which were great experiences as
well as good fellowship. We had some really great
meetings, dyno events and ended it up with our
Christmas party hosted by Patrick Smith and family. I would like to congratulate everyone who received a trophy for racing and for the car shows
for the year . The trophies were awesome this
year and the money was not bad either. I just
wanted to thank everyone for a fantastic year of
great camaraderie and clean fun along with some
awesome pictures to go with it. The memories will
be with me forever.
The year has passed by very quickly and I sure
enjoyed it a lot and hope you did as well. I hope
everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New
Year.
Thanks, Victor Segovia
Just a reminder club dues are due by Jan. 01.
2009 Officers will be voted on at the Jan. 24th
meeting.
I hope everyone had a great Christmas, we’ll see
you at the meeting.
Your Prez,
David Newton

Brake Light Troubles? By David Ellis
If you have no brake lights but the center brake light still works then read on
Remove the cover at the dash under the steering column. Look on the right lower side you see a long connector with
a white wire on the end that is probably burned into or not connected at all. Repair this wire to the connector and this
should restore your brake lights. Now as to what causes this Check all 4 brake light bulbs and make sure that they do
NOT say heavy duty or start with the numbers 20. The normal wattage for the brake light is 10 watts if you change
this bulb to a heavy duty it will draw 20 watts hence that would be twice the amps for the circuit and this heats that
wire under the column and burns it into. A 20 watt bulb has nothing to do with how bright it is.

Buick’s Top Secret History
(Thanks to Rob Pinkston and Mitch Smith
for the information for this article)
Did you guys know there is a link between the SR-71 "Blackbird" and Buicks??? I'm reading a book right now titled "SR-71 Revealed - The Inside Story" written by Col. Richard H. Grahm. Colonel Grahm was an SR-71 pilot, squadron commander and
wing commander in the US Air Force. For anyone who doesn't remember, the SR-71 "Blackbird" was *the* fastest and highest
flying spy plane ever built. Actually, I believe the speed and altitude records set by SR-71's still stand today making the SR-71
the fastest airplane of any kind ever built. The "Blackbird's" official top speed was in excess of Mach 3 and, amazingly, the SR71 went into service in the mid-60's and continued service into the '80's. The book is page after page of fascinating information
for anyone interested in the SR-71 or military aircraft in general.
So, on to the good stuff...
This book goes into very specific details about every aspect of the SR-71 and the pilots that flew them. In chapter 6, Col.
Grahm gives some specific information about the engines used to power the SR-71. The SR-71 utilized two Pratt and Whitney
J-58 turbojet engines. These engines and the fuel they burned were developed exclusively for the SR-71. According to the author, at full afterburner, maximum thrust, just *one* J-58 engine produced 32,000 pounds of thrust and consumed 65,000
pounds of fuel per hour - that's 1,083 pounds of fuel per minute!!! These engines are 20 feet long, 4-1/2 feet in diameter and
weigh 6,500 pounds each! Anybody want to guess what the SR-71 ground crews used to start these monstrous engines?? If
you guessed they used Buick engines, you'd be right! According to the author, in the early days of the SR-71, ground crews
used what they called "the Buick" to start the SR-71's engines. What they had was actually not one, but two
big-block Buick V8 engines (the author did not specify what displacement) on a roll-around cart. The engines were connected
to a gearbox which drove a vertical shaft. The vertical shaft connected directly to the bottom of the J-58 engine. The author
goes on to comment on what a spectacular sight it was to see and hear "the Buick" startup then run the J-58 engines up to their
4,000 rpm idle speed while parked in the hanger at night. Apparently, the engines had dragster style straight pipes and no mufflers so they made for an interesting sound and light show.
Eventually, "the Buick"
was replaced by a pneumatic starting system.
Pretty cool huh?
As another interesting
side note, the author of
the book, Colonel Richard
Grahm, actually lives here
locally right up in Plano. I
had the privilege of meeting him and getting him to
sign my copy of his book
while at a small air show
over in Addison earlier
this year.
Like I said, I just had to
share this cool bit of info.

LSPBC Dyno CHAMPS Stan Bradford and Duke McClain receiving
their awards from David Newton
2008 LSPBC Racing Season Comes to a Close
WOW.....I must say the LSPBC racing this year was the best ever and especially the last night with our largest turnout ever of the season. 15 members of the LSPBC fought it out for double points and anyone within the top 7 had a
chance of winning the LSPBC points series championship. Yes the point series was that close!
The rookie Chase Tucker started off the race season in April with a win over Carl Brimer when he broke an axle in
the semi's bye run into the finals.
May storms cancelled the race event giving everyone a little more time to add more parts and fix everything.
Carl Brimer fixed his GN and was able to gain a small lead of 10 points over Chase Tucker after our 2nd event in June.
The point series was tied in first place after our 3rd event in July between Carl Brimer, Chase Tucker and Tony Rossi reporting
in at 75 points each. Don’t forget that Duke McClain and crew were lurking not too far behind within the field at 60 points. Carl
suffered a small mechanical failure and David Ellis being the champ he is, waited as long as he could to see if Carl was going
to make the first round. Duke McClain and Tony Rossi dueled it out in the final round with Tony being on top for the night for
the win.
Carl Brimer managed to go a few rounds in August to extend his lead by 20 points over Tony Rossi. Tim Winn was able to
make ground on the field by winning in August with 45 points to bring him up to 5th place from previous 9th place in June. The
competition within the series after Augusts race series was getting hot
and heavy with only a 20 point difference separating 2nd through 5th
places (Tony Rossi, Chase Tucker, Duke McClain and Tim Winn)
A mild September brought showers to cancel our race but a make up
race date was being discussed.
October was shaping up to be a battle in the points race series as we
were in the final swing of the race season and the unknown certainty
if a make up race was going to happen. Tim Winn's "Orange Crush"
suffered catastrophic failure prior to the event and called in the GS
daily driver. Victor Segovia took the win in the 2nd round over Carl
Brimer leaving the points leader with 135 points total for the night.
Duke McClain was able to close in the gap with an additional 20
points by making it into the finals. Duke's consistent white T was able
to boost him forward to 2nd place, from a previous 4th place, with a
tight 15 point difference between Carl Brimer and Duke McClain.
David Ellis was fighting ignition problems all night but managed to pull
out the win in the finals over Duke McClain's red light start. David Ellis
has been silent all race season but is making a nice charge for the
points lead with 95 points and tied in 4th place with Chase Tucker.
David's win took him from a distant 7th place to a tied 4th place with
Chase Tucker with 95 points each making them within 10 points of
Tony Rossi, 25 points of Duke McClain and 40 points of leader Carl
Brimer,
The November race date was set for November 8th with one of the
coolest nights we have seen in the race season. Track meteorologist
Carl Brimer reported a density altitude of 84 feet below sea level and
50 degrees right before our first round of eliminations! Every racer
were cranking out some serious ET's with the biggest improved ET
that we saw throughout the season was Ron Britton running 7.6's!
The Sportsman ladder positions were set for our final and double
points race with some big rivalries in the first round. Ron Britton was
the man to beat for the night with the 1st place sportsman position
and cruised his first round win with a bye run on a 7.78 pass. The
points leader Carl Brimer and 2nd place Duke McClain paired up in
the first round with the red light win going to Carl Brimer with a 7.42
on a 7.32 dial. The brotherly pairings of Kyle Faulkner with the
"Fireford" and Mike Faulkner in the 2008 G8 with the win going to

Kyle on a double breakout of 6.799 on a 6.80 dial. 4th place tie
between David Ellis and Chase Tucker get paired up with the
win going to Chase Tucker with David running a 8.18 on 8.40
dial to Chase running an 8.03 to an 8.02 dial. The LSPBC officers pairing of Rob Downey and David Newton with the win
going to Rob Downey on a 7.59 pass to dial of 7.53. Victor
Segovia and Dean Davis paired up with Victor staying ahead
of Dean with an 9.06 run. Danny Oviedo came out to play and
paired up with Tony Rossi and Danny taking the win with a
7.42 to 7.38 dial to Tony's 8.86 on an 8.70 dial. Tim Winn was
fighting fluid leaks in the "Orange Crush" earlier in the night but
got it fix in time to race Patrick Smith with his stealth 4.1 blue T
and taking the win over Tim with a 7.73 on a 7.70 dial in.
Ron Britton takes a hole shot win .686 reaction in the 2nd
round over Rob Downey's .8033. Dan Oviedo ran another consistent 7.42 pass, on a 7.28 dial in, to take the win with Patrick
Smith breaking out with a 7.6931 on a 7.70 dial. Kyle Faulkner
runs a 6.79 on a 6.78 dial and gets the automatic red light win
from Chase Tucker. Carl Brimer reels in the win with a 7.55 on
a 7.32 dial over Victor Segovia with a 9.24 on an 8.90 dial.
Carl clinches the 2008 LSPBC Race Series Championship in
the 2nd round as he advances to the semi finals.
The semi final payout round competition was going to be tough
with Danny Oviedo and Kyle Faulkner running within .02 of
their dial ins, Ron Britton's car getting faster with every pass,
and Carl Brimer cutting reaction times in the .500's. Danny
Oviedo
and Ron Britton pair up in the semi's with Ron giving the automatic red light, .339, win to Danny. Ron's "Bin Laden seeker"
ran a best 7.61 on a 7.65 and Danny's sleeper T running another 7.40 on a 7.38 dial. Carl Brimer faces the stiff competition of Kyle
Faulkner to advance on to the finals. Carl cut's yet another .538 reaction, but Kyle gets a little edgy and cuts a so
close .454 reaction giving the automatic win to Carl. Carl
needed the help as his intercooler pipe blew off just after the
330' mark to coast to an 8.08 to Kyle's 6.85.
Danny Oviedo and Carl Brimer pair up for the final round which
will be almost heads up as Danny dials in a 7.38 to Carl's 7.42.
Carl gets the jump by .04 handicap start and cuts a .588 reaction time. Danny brings up the boost pretty hard staging the
car and pushes him through the lights with a .0963 reaction
giving Carl the automatic red light win. Carl said that the car
was running low on fuel and sputtered a little bit to a 7.81 to
Danny's 7.79.

Buick vs. Ford Shootout in OK
This year’s shoot out weather couldn’t have been better, but the turnout of Buick’s sure could have. Although the Buick turnout was better than previous years, there still weren’t enough there to out number
the Fords, even with the extended invite to all GM vehicles. The sand bagging was heavy as always but
the Buicks turned out short 37 to 56. Better luck next year and if you have a running Buick, you better be
there, and bring a shovel :) Special thanks goes out to the Oklahoma Buick club for again organizing the
event this year, it was a great time no matter what the out come is each year!

Did You Know? (Winter Edition)
Hey guys, this is the last installment of the ” Did You Know”. I’ve seen and learned a lot
about the different types of crazy options or combinations on the Turbo Regals throughout
my time. The Grand National and the Turbo Regals, the Turbo Trans Am with the Buick motor, have some rally unique features to them and I’m glad to have put them together for you
this year. I want to thank Rob Downey for his help putting it together for us to enjoy. I hope
you enjoyed them as much as I did. We split them up into the 3 portions for the newsletter
but if you would like a copy of them all as a whole please let me or Rob know and we will get you a copy.
In 1989 the turbo v6 that powered the GN and T cars came back in the
20th anniversary Turbo Trans Am. The fastest of all the turbo cars built in
the 80’s. This is a pic of it being introduced at the New York auto show in
1989.
In 1989 the Turbo Trans Am was the first Pace car at Indy that did NOT need any modifications done to it.
It just got the strobe lights put on them and they were ready.
That’s pretty impressive considering that a lot of the Pace cars of today still need mods done to them to
attain the performance needed.
Not all 1989 Anniversary Turbo Tran Ams came with t tops and
leather seats. Of the 1550 produced, 187 had T-tops and cloth,
24 had hardtop and leather, and the rarest are 15 hardtops with
cloth. Sounds dull but very very rare!!!
Did you know the Indianapolis 500 had a few of our Buicks as pace cars. In 1976 it was a Century, in
1981 they used a Regal, and in 1989 it was not a Buick but a Buick powered Turbo Trans Am.
Did You Know? (con’t)
There are some celebrities who are fond of the Grand
National and have owned or still own one. Sean Penn, Jay
Leno, David Spade, and I believe Steven Segal still own
one.
Carmen Electra bought one for her then hubby Dave
Navarro (former Janes Addiction guitarist) as a gift.
Comedian / Musician Sam Kinison owned a TTA which unfortunately he had a fatal accident in which
caused his death on April 10, 1992 at 38 years old. He was on his way to Laughlin, NV to perform a
show when a drunk driver crossed into Sam’s lane and hit him head on. Sam had seen the drunk
driver approaching and had even slowed down to 15 mph, but he was not wearing his seatbelt and
was thrown into the windshield and died from multiple traumatic injuries.
In 1986 and 1987 some T cars came with leather interiors. In 1986 they were usually on the high optioned
cars and on the 1987 cars they were usually on the Limited's. They only came in two colors and were
always in column shift cars.....Tan or Gray
Did You Know? (con’t)
In 1987 Bobby Lobonte won the points championship at Caraway Speedway and to commemorate that
event, Scott Garten Buick in NC which sponsored him wanted to do something special so he had the next
10 Grand Nationals and 1GNX(523) that came through his dealership be the commemorative cars.
The cars received 3 commemorative stickers each that read Bobby Lonbonte's signature and below that
had the words "Signature
Series". The dealership
called them the Bobby Labonte Signature series and
it took off from there. I've
been fortunate enough to
have seen the GNX and one
of the GN's before in Bowling Green KY.
Do you know how the Grand National came about? In 1981 the Buick Regal G body dominated
NASCAR's Grand National racing series and in early 1982 Buick introduced the car to commemorate the
races by calling the car a Grand National.
Something as small as the valve stem
caps were different back then. On all the
Grand Nationals and T cars the valve
stem caps were gray. Most have since
been removed and replaced with black
ones but a true original car will still have
the gray ones. I bet if you look at your
spare tire on most of your cars you will
see the that you still have one that
survived.
It’s a Turbo Buick Wedding

Patrick and Deanna Smith hosted this year’s LSPBC Christmas Party and it turned out to be a heck of a
party! The neighborhood was all decorated up nicely as well. The gift exchange got a little wild and crazy
again this year. The awards were handed out for the car show points winners and the racing series
winners, and what nice awards they were! And after the dust settled, the sticks were broke out and
the pool shooting began!
