The Alcove News Vogel Alcove Childcare Center for the Homeless Summer 2010 An Evening with Terry Fator “One of the Best Entertainers in the World” Simon Cowell was right. Terry Fator is “one of the best entertainers in the world,” as he proved on April 20. Some guests called it the best Vogel Alcove Arts Performance Event in 19 years. Mr. Fator took time out from his five-year (from left) Co-chairs Mike and Erin McKool and Co-chairs Terry Fator onstage. $100-million run Cynthia and Forrest Miller. at The Mirage in Las Vegas to wow the Meyerson Symphony The evening was not only moving and entertaining but also Center audience. Accompanied by his seven-piece band, he incredibly important to the Vogel Alcove’s financial stability, performed impeccable covers of songs by thanks to the outstanding leadership of event Aaron Neville, Louis Armstrong, Garth co-chairs Cynthia and Forrest Miller and Brooks, James Brown, Etta James, Elvis, and Erin and Mike McKool, who exceeded this others. As charming and down to earth as he is (continued on page 5) talented, Mr. Fator spent the previous morning visiting the Vogel Alcove, where he and Winston the Impersonating Turtle delighted a smaller, shorter audience. During his act, Mr. Fator employs a bevy of puppets with distinct personalities to great comic effect. Dallas Morning News reporter Michael Granberry wrote that the event “high point by far was Fator outfitting an unsuspecting Dallas businessman in a mask, wig and dress to make him look like Cher, as Fator, à la Sonny Bono, sang “I Got You Babe” for both of them. Now Terry Fator visits the Vogel Alcove, to the delight of the children. that was funny.” Two hundred forty members of the Children’s Chorus of Greater Dallas opened the show, entering the Meyerson performance hall from every doorway. According to Mr. You won’t want to miss next year’s celebration of the Granberry, the children “were selected from a combination of 20th annual Vogel Alcove Arts Performance Event on four Children’s Chorus choirs” representing grades 4 through Tuesday, May 10, 2011. Watch for details in the fall edition 8. He wrote in his blog that their “angelic voices” were the of the Vogel Alcove News. For questions, please call Anna “most moving aspect” of the evening performance. Irving, Director of Development: (214) 368-8686. Vogel Alcove Childcare Center for the Homeless 7557 Rambler Road, Suite 262, Dallas, TX 75231 214-368-8686 www.vogelalcove.org 2 President’s Message By the time this article is published, my two-year term as president of the Vogel Alcove board will have ended. The last two years have been extremely rewarding for my entire family, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to lead such a quality organization and contribute to such an important and just cause. During the past two years, Vogel Alcove experienced a number of changes and accomplished many goals. Among many others, consider the following accomplishments: 1. We made signif icant progress towards professionalizing our administrative functions. In addition, the board’s governance policies and procedures were revamped to conform to best practices. Even now, we continue an active process of considering whether and to what extent we should further modify board and board committee size, composition and responsibility. Commencing with the new fiscal year, we have created two new board vice president positions: vice president law and vice president technology (marketing/social media). 2. In June 2010, the board adopted a new long range plan, which I expect to serve as the blueprint for the Alcove’s foreseeable future. The plan includes four initiatives that will be difficult to implement successfully, but will be well worth the effort. 3. Notwithstanding the challenging economy, our 2009 and 2010 annual Vogel Alcove Arts Performance Events were two of our most successful ever. In 2010, we instituted a number of changes that I expect will propel the annual Event to even greater heights in the future. 4. Led by Dave Cunningham, our New Facilities Committee made significant progress toward positioning us to undertake a capital campaign to build a new facility, including the preparation of preliminary construction plans. The Alcove purchased the land used as its parking lot upon which the new facility will be constructed. 5. We experienced significant turnover of our staff. Among others, we welcomed Galen Evans, director of finance and administration; and Sharon Worthy, administrative assistant. In addition, we expanded the responsibilities of Coleone Taylor, our director of childcare. We are in the midst of a nationwide search for a new executive director to replace Barbara Landix, while simultaneously interviewing candidates to lead our social services department. 6. We also adopted a new logo and redesigned our website (www. vogelalcove.org) to be very user-friendly and informative. I could not be more proud of the Vogel Alcove officers and directors who have unfailingly supported me during the past two years. Without intending to slight any of these hard working and talented individuals, special thanks go to Sheila Chapman, first vice president; Michael Hoffman, our outgoing immediate past president; Chuck Stein, who is stepping down as treasurer after more than 10 years but will continue to serve as a director; and Peter Brodsky, vice president Arts Performance Event. In addition, I received extraordinary support from Alan Gold, Alice Barnett, Craig Budner and Andy Rabin. The counsel and commitment I received from all of these people, especially during the last nine months, was hugely appreciated. The quality and dedication of our entire board of directors is second to none. As I turn over the reins of this wonderful organization to Sheila Chapman, my successor and incoming board president, I want to extend a very special (continued on page 3) VOGEL ALCOVE NEWS President’s Message (continued from page 2) thank you to my family. My wife Sondra and my children, Courtney and Jamie, not only enthusiastically accommodated the long hours I spent fulfilling my obligations to the Alcove, but they participated in a variety of Vogel Alcove activities. Sondra and Courtney volunteered at the Christmas store. Sondra organized clothing, book and toy donations from several of our friends. Jamie and her Y Princess tribe visited the Alcove and made tie dye shirts for the kids. Together with two of her friends, Courtney raised almost $500 for the Alcove by organizing “Hip Hop for the Homeless,” where they taught a group of kindergarteners and first graders to dance. Courtney and Jamie both attended the Arts Performance Events. We all enjoyed a variety of enriching experiences and, without a doubt, during the last two years proved the old adage that when you give to others, you receive more than you give. I look forward to serving as immediate past president and actively contributing to the even more significant growth and change Vogel Alcove is so well-positioned to achieve. Thank you for all you do to support us. - Alan Perkins Annual Campaign for Homeless Children: Success Story When you give to the Vogel Alcove’s Annual Campaign for Homeless Children, you give hope to young children like Monica… Following a two-year separation, five-year-old Monica was taken from her foster family and reunited with her mother. The little girl had few memories of her mother and grieved the loss of her beloved foster family. When Monica came to the Alcove she was underweight and withdrawn. She refused to eat, play or participate in classroom activities. In anguish, she often hit and scratched herself. Monica began play therapy with one of the Alcove’s own professional therapists who quickly taught the troubled girl how to express her feelings of anger, confusion and loss. She helped Monica understand who her real “Mommy” was and met with the child’s mother to talk about ways to bond with her daughter. Soon enough, Monica began to feel secure. She stopped hurting herself, began eating and quickly gained weight. In the classroom, Monica blossomed. She joined in classroom activities and even made a few friends along the way. The successful recovery of homeless children like Monica depends on donors like you. Mr. Miller serves as Group President-Corporate Strategy & Development of AT&T Inc., a Paramount Sponsor of the 2010 event. AT&T Inc. has also become the very first sponsor of next year’s event. Mr. McKool is Founding Partner and President of McKool Smith, a Pinnacle sponsor of this year’s event. A sponsor since 1994, his law firm and partners this year surpassed their previous high levels of giving. The event vice chairs Debbie and Gerald Barnes, Lael and Peter Brodsky, Lynae and Dean Fearing, Rita Sue and Alan Gold, and Tracy and Kent Rathbun also recruited numerous sponsors and advertisers that were integral to the success of the event. In addition, Mr. Brodsky served as Board vice president/event. Board member Rick Lacher chaired the Lacher Committee whose effective sponsor solicitation made a significant impact on event revenue. The top sponsors who supported the 2010 event are listed on the opposite page. Ms. Rathbun and Ms. Fearing, with the help of Ms. Miller, planned a superb dinner for more than 900 sponsors and their guests. They secured the donation of gorgeous floral centerpieces and gift cards for the sponsor dinner tables, which featured paintings by the Alcove children framed by Jessica and Laurent Therivel. The centerpieces, gift cards and paintings were auctioned at the event’s first-ever silent auction. Ms. Fearing and Ms. Rathbun also obtained hundreds of delectable desserts for the reception following the performance, many of which were donated by their restaurant, Shinsei, and by Fearing’s and Kent Rathbun Concepts. Event attendees received the beautiful commemorative program created by the Fossil Design Studio as a pro bono project for the ninth year in a row. Becky Winslow brought her artistic ability and skill to the book’s professional design and layout. Blaine Leist again expertly managed the production process. Don Clampitt and Clampitt Paper and David Besgrove and Ussery Printing helped reduce the cost of the program with their inkind donations toward the paper and printing. The ads in the commemorative program provided critical event revenue, thanks to the Ad Solicitation Committee chaired by Lisa Cregan with special recognition to vice chair Gerald Barnes McKool Smith table SUMMER 2010 (continued from page 1) and his colleagues at Neiman Marcus, who again secured many important advertisers. Fred Ashman and Mark Maisonneuve of Maxcel Multi Image produced and directed an enlightening and engaging video about the Alcove with the guidance of vice chairs Lael and Peter Brodsky. It is the company’s fourth pro bono video for the Alcove. Following the Children’s Chorus of Greater video, Board president Alan Dallas Perkins reported on the Board’s new long-range plan, paid tribute to honorees Jeneane and Aaron Pearlman and Tina Wasserman for their past service as event volunteers, and recognized the co-chairs’ tireless efforts, presenting them with Steuben hearts as tokens of the Alcove’s appreciation. Mr. Miller and Mr. McKool praised the generosity of the event sponsors and advertisers and the dedication of volunteers. Gail Cooksey and Molli Samuels of Cooksey Communications generated outstanding publicity to promote this year’s event, donating their public relations expertise for the ninth consecutive year. A big thank you to those who worked to make the 2010 benefit a success: the co-chairs; vice chairs; Event Executive Committee; Benefit Committee; Lacher Committee; and Alcove Board; with the skilled professional assistance of Anna Irving, Alcove director of development who has managed the event for 13 years; and consultants Wolford McCue and Adele Demler. The 2010 event sponsors, advertisers and general ticket patrons funded 62 percent of the Vogel Alcove’s annual expenses, helping create opportunities for the youngest children of homelessness families who deserve a chance to succeed.
