CANDLE LIGHT (September 8-14, 2013)
Faith to a God Who Calls, Challenges and Accompanies
Rev. Fr. Nathaniel G. Gentizon
As
I
embrace
the
responsibility of being an editorin-chief of our weekly newsletter,
let me share to you who God is
like for me right now.
What comes to mind is
the God who called Abraham
to leave his homeland, kin,
culture, property and wealth to
search for the promised land.
The God who asked him to offer
his one and only son, Isaac, as a
sacrificial offering. The God who
summoned Moses to lead His
people out from Egypt. He who
called them for a specific mission
and never failed to accompany
them in all circumstances.
I now feel like Abraham and
Moses. God calls and challenges
me to go out from my own
comfort zones so that I may grow
and become the person He wants
me to be.
Human as I am, I did hesitate
to accept this task. “Pakantaha lang
ako, indi lang pagpasulata.” Used
to write term papers during my
Philosophy and Theology years,
my writings usually sound so
academic, so theological. In other
words, boring! A friend once said
to me, “Can you put some humor in
your articles?” I have never been
a member of the editorial board
source: dan-andhislite.blogspot.com
of our school paper. I seldom
give my contribution. If I did,
it’s filled with footnotes. How I
abhor writing! The mere thought
scares and paralyzes me!
But I have a God who
sees what I do not see in
myself. He sees my untapped
potentials. He knows my
strengths and capacities. He
is also knowledgeable of my
weaknesses and imperfections.
Thus, he calls me to this work –
a wonderful gift of love for my
own sanctification and a means
for me to express my love for
Him and his people.
I believe that the road ahead
will not be smooth. I am consoled
with the words of Pope Francis
in his first encyclical, Lumen
Fidei, “Faith is not a light which
scatters all our darkness, but a
lamp which guides our steps in the
night and suffices for the journey.
To those who suffer, God does not
provide arguments which explain
everything; rather, his response is
that of an accompanying presence,
a history of goodness which touches
every story of suffering and opens up
a ray of light” (57).
May I possess a deep faith
like that of my predecessors
who did a great job because of
God’s accompanying presence.
Through
their
unfailing
passion and dedication, Candle
Light still glows today. My
belief in the support of our
parish priest, Most Rev. Gerardo
A. Alminaza, D.D., my priestcompanions, the Cathedral staff
and personnel, the editorial
board and the parishioners
strengthens me knowing that
all of us are in this together.
And together, we can make
things happen!
Finally, let me invite you to
pray with me. We dedicate this
prayer taken from the Lumen
Fidei to our Lady who celebrates
her birthday today.
“Mother, help our faith!
Open our hearts to hear God’s
word and to recognize his voce
and call.
Awaken in us a desire to
follow in his footsteps, to go forth
from our own land and to receive
His promise…
Remind us that those who
believe are never alone.
Teach us to see all things with
the eyes of Jesus, that he may be
light for our path. And may this
light of faith always increase in us,
until the dawn of that undying day
which is Christ himself, your Son,
our Lord. Amen”.

CL is now 22!
April 28 and May 5, 1991
The First Parish General
Assembly recommended and
approved among others things
the publication of a weekly
newsletter
as
information
and formation bulletin for
the parishioners.
September 8, 1991
The Birth of “Candle Light”,
as the parish’s birthday present to
our Blessed Mother Mary.
STRUGGLES AND
DIFFICULTIES:
CL had no functional
office in its first two years.
Weekly Staff Meetings were held
in any available space in the
parish.
Fr. Rio & Fr. Andy
often come to the office on
Thursday mornings with their
hair standing on end, with their
eyebrows meeting together due
to late submission of assigned
articles and the press call for the
final draft.
Attending an annual
retreat for priests, Fr. Emman had
to call in, to dictate his Heartbeats.
In
one
Wednesday
afternoon
due
to
power
interruption, Fr. Emman decided
to transport the computer and
printer to Nang Eve Horvidalla’s
house in Tagbac to finish the final
draft. The staff had to go with
the computer.
Not being able to avoid
editing
mistakes,
Grammar
Honoring Mary Through the Parish Website
Fr. Alejandro Esperancilla
and spelling were a-plenty. 19
issues were spent apologizing to
Dr. and Mrs. Valentin Dabuco
for wrongly printing their
wedding announcement under a
grim heading.
Staff come and go and yet,
Candle Light has never missed
a Sunday without publication.
Even Typhoon Frank cannot stop
the paper’s circulation.
BLESSINGS RECEIVED and
READERS’ GENEROSITY
First and foremost, Candle
Light’s first blessing and is always
receiving is God’s guidance.
God keeps touching the
hearts of people to generously
support the publication. “Seed
Money” was donated by
kindhearted parishioners to start
the paper.
From the start up to
the present, Candle Light
depended on DONATIONS
from parishioners and generous
friends from other parishes and
even from abroad, and from the
second collection during Sunday
Masses.
CANDLE LIGHT GOES
NATIONAL AND
INTERNATIONAL
Candle Light has reached
other countries through the
migrant workers of our parish.
Their families send them copies
to keep them in touch with
their parish and to lift them up
spiritually.
PDF (Portable Document
Format) during the time of Msgr.
Ramon Masculino as parish
priest of Jaro were sent abroad in
response to the request of readers.
missing a Sunday in circulation
yet each issue is always much
better than the previous ones and
always a “labor of love.”
KEEPERS OF THE FLAME
To date Candle Light has
been through 13 editors.
The Staff of the paper is on
voluntary basis. They come and
go. Some have joined our creator,
a pioneer staff, former Gov.
Conrado “Rading” Norada, Mr.
Romeo Tan, Mr. Alfonso Palisada,
Mrs. Pat Gumban and Mrs. Lucy
Buendia.
Only a handful of the past
and current staffs are “experts”
and “experienced” in journalism.
Candle Light still manages
to flicker with the help of a lot of
people but it is through this paper
that we can always feel God’s
divine intervention.
As the parish’s birthday
gift to Our Blessed Mother, we
can also see her assistance – it is
always a wonder how CL has
managed to come out weekly, not
Candle Light’s two fold objective:
1.To be a main vehicle for
information-dissemination of
the Parish.
2.A tool for evangelization, an
avenue where it can vigorously
spread the Word of God and
contribute to the renewal of the
parishioners.

Libreria Candelaria Celebrates 21st Anniversary
It has been a tradition in
the Cathedral of Jaro to start
something new by inaugurating
and launching this on the
Birthday of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. It started with our parish
weekly paper Candle Light,
followed by the St. Elizabeth of
Hungary Kinder School, and
then by the Libreria Candelaria.
Then when the parish decided
to make its own candle for the
perdon of the Candelaria it
inaugurated the factory on the
Birthday of Mary. Even the
renovated shrine was formally
opened and blessed on the
said date.
Today as we honor
our Blessed Mother whose
“yes” and total availability
to God have been a constant
inspiration in our ministry in
the parish, we are launching
yet another ministry – our
parish website.
Mary
prophesied in her Magnificat
that she will be called blessed
by all generations, now the
techie generation will finally
get to have their chance to
honor her, to pray to God
through her, and even learn
from her through the World
Wide Web. If you believe that
it is time to go paperless and
save the trees, then you may
read your Candle Life in PDF
file in the parish website. If
distance is preventing you
from visiting Our Blessed
Mother and praying to her
in her shrine, then you can
go virtual by going on-line in
our parish website – there you
can pray the prayer to Our
Lady of Candles in English
or Hiligaynon, you can even
sing her official hymn at the
privacy of your room without
missing the lyrics, and if these
do not satisfy you and your
too important prayers and
concerns, you can send us
your prayer request online
and we would be more than
willing to join you in praying
for your intentions. We would
4
light their altars when they
pray to remind them of her
powerful intercession and
her Son’s unfailing love
for humanity.
Today, September 8
together with other entities
in the Jaro Cathedral like the
St. Elizabeth Kinder School
and the longest running
parish weekly paper in Iloilo,
Candle Light, the Libreria is
celebrating its anniversary
in the feast of the Nativity of
the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Since last December
16, 2012 when we began
the Aguinaldo masses the
management of the Libreria
was handed over to the
Seminary
Administration
with an agreement that part
of the proceeds from the store
will help offset the projected
deficit of the St. Vincent
Ferrer Seminary and to
help finance its scholarship
program for poor but
deserving
seminarians
who show signs of being
called to the priesthood. So
please support the Libreria
because in doing so you
are helping the archdiocese
by providing her with
future priests.
CANDLE LIGHT (September 8-14, 2013)
Here you will get to know
the programs of the parish – its
social apostolate and outreach
programs,
catechetical
programs, MKK program,
the
pastoral
programs,
the
different
religious
organizations, the Cofradia
and the liturgical ministries.
For those in far off places
and are feeling nostalgic for
Jaro we are posting initially
the pasos of Jaro, the sacred
images of the cathedral and
even some lapidas. We would
do more postings later. In the
future we may even do some
live streaming.
You may
want your vows heard and
watched in the internet by
relatives who cannot make it
on your wedding day – live,
as it happens. Or people in the
Middle East might want to join
us in the Aguinaldo masses
and during the fiesta not
just in spirit but also online?!

The Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Fe Marina S. Siacon
The Feast of the Nativity
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
celebrated on September 8,
is closely connected with the
Immaculate Concepcion. She is
prepared by Divine Providence
to be the Mother of Jesus, the
Son of God. Conceived in the
womb of her mother Anna
without stain of sin and her
birth is considered by the
Church as a solemn birth.
She is free from original sin, a
privilege of being the Mother
of God from the moment of
her conception.
In celebrating the birth of
Mary, Christians anticipate the
Incarnation (Word made Flesh)
and the birth of her Divine Son,
Jesus, Our Lord and Savior.
This Feast is an occasion for us
Fr. Alejandro Esperancilla
Libreria is Spanish for
bookstore but if you go to the
Libreria Candelaria the most
saleable item is not a book
but a candle, the perdon of
Our Lady of Candles. That is
understandable considering
that devotees who visit the
shrine would want to bring
home the tangible sign of
her presence and care in
the perdon. This would
even print your prayer request
and drop this in the Petition
Box located in the Adoration
Chapel. If she has answered
your prayers, you can even
send us your testimony and
we may even publish it so that
others may come to know of
her love for us.
In our website you can
also find the schedule for daily
and Sunday masses and also
at various times of the year;
you may also find the dates
and times for the reception
of the sacraments such as
Baptism, Confirmation and
the Sacrament of the Sick, and
the things you need to do and
prepare beforehand if you are
planning your wedding at the
Jaro Cathedral. Office hours
are also listed and you can even
get to know your friendly and
accommodating parish staff
and personnel in the site (they
have their pictures published
where I intentionally forced
them to smile!).

CANDLE LIGHT (September 8-14, 2013)
to give honor to Our Mother
as a praise and thanksgiving
for her personal sanctity
and vocation as the Blessed
Virgin Mary, the Mother
of Jesus.
According to Fr. Eugene
Lobo, S.J., the birth of Mary
“is an event which belongs at
the very heart of the History of
Salvation. She is the symbol of
the hope and expectation of God’s
faithful people and at the same
time she is the beginning of a new
hope, the beginning of the dawn
of that newness which her Son
would bring for all creation...”
Let us all bind our hearts
together and offer them
to our beloved Mother as
a special gift for her birthday.
Let this be an occasion for us to
strengthen our faith so that like
Mary we can become instruments
of renewal and salvation.
Happy Birthday, Mama
Mary!!!
Quote of the Week
Let us ask Mary to help
us fix our eyes intently
on Jesus, to follow Him
always even when this is
demanding.

Archbishop Lagdameo Issues
Circular
Letter
Regarding
Pope Francis’ Appeal for Peace
and Prayer for Abolition of
Pork Barrel
His Excellency, Most Rev.
Angel N. Lagdameo, D.D., issued
a circular reiterating the appeal
of Pope Francis to pray for the
problem of conflict-ridden Syria.
That it may be resolved not by war
but by peaceful dialogue between
the United States and Syria.
Archbishop Lagdameo also
encouraged the faithful to pray
so that the issue of “pork barrel”
6
which was raised by the previous
rallies in Manila, Cebu, Iloilo and
elsewhere will be followed with
courage, wisdom and prudence.
According to him, the “pork
barrel” has been the cause of abuse
of the people’s money. What
ought to go to the common good
has been “mysteriously” diverted
to still unnamed or unknown
or dubious projects or objects.
“Preferential option for the poor
would significantly apply to the
just application of the funds that
had been abused under the name
‘pork barrel’”, he added.

Pope Francis to consecrate the
world to the Immaculate Heart
of Mary
The statue of Our Lady of
the Rosary of Fatima will travel
all the way from Portugal to the
Vatican, where Pope Francis is
planning on consecrating the
world to the Immaculate Heart
of Mary.
The
‘Marian
Day’
ceremony, which is scheduled
to take place at the Vatican
on Sunday, October 13th,
will be attended by hundreds
of religious movements and
institutions that have a special
Marian devotion. This Mass
is one of the last main events
scheduled for the ‘Year of Faith.’
The Statue of Our Lady will
make its way to Rome, at the
request of Pope Francis, who
has shown a great devotion to
Mary, since the very first day of
his pontificate.
Congregation for Eastern
Churches ask for an end
to violence
The Congregation for
Eastern Churches, through
the Vatican’s l’Osservatore
Romano, issued a statement
on Syria. In it, they ask for an
end to the violence, and for
God to light the conscience
of world leaders. The Eastern
Churches expressed that they
have strengthened their prayer
for the Middle Eastern country,
at the time when the situation
continues to deteriorate.
The statement said that the
Pope’s continued appeals for
peace in Syria have consoled
the entire country, while adding
that “reconciliation must be
stronger than the clamor of
weapons.”
“With immense sadness,
but along with hope, Eastern
Catholics join the Pope in prayer,
with the certainty that the God
of peace and of each consolation
will never abandon the land
sanctified since the start of the
Rendition,” the statement read.
It closed off by reminding the
international community that
justice, reconciliation, and the
social, personal and religious
rights of all the peoples of the
Middle East will prevail.
Pope’s Twitter account grew
by more than 585,000 followers
A month after the end
of WYD Rio 2013, the event’s
impact on the Pope’s Twitter
account is very noticeable. In
August, the account @Pontifex
grew by more than 585,000
followers. In the months before,
the account added an average of
240,000 followers per month. In
other words, during the month
of August, it grew twice as fast.
This month, Pope Francis
has issued tweets every other
day, and several have been retweeted more than 13,000 times.
In August, Pope Francis’
public
appearances
have
trickled down, but not his
activity on Twitter. In that time
he was tuned in on how to reach
the 500-million-strong Twitter
universe. Those efforts are
reciprocal. Catholics who want
to know what the Pope expects
of them simply have to read his
messages on Twitter.

According to our bishops,
the pork barrel controversy is
not just a constitutional issue or
a legal or socio-political concern.
It is an offense against God who
commands us “Thou shall not
steal” and “Thou shall not bear false
witness against our neighbours”.
Contrition must be our
first response to the pork barrel

(Lucas 14: 25-33) Ang Bili sang Pagkagintuton-an
May madamo gid nga mga
tawo nga nag-upod kay Jesus.
Nagliso sia kag nagsiling sa ila,
26
”Ang bisan sin-o nga nagakari
sa akon kag wala nagahigugma sa
akon labi pa sa iya amay kag iloy,
asawa kag kabataan, kautoran
nga lalaki kag babayi, kag sa
iya kaugalingon indi manginakon gintuton-an. 27Ang bisan
sin-o nga wala nagapas-an sang
iya kaugalingon nga krus kag
nagasunod sa akon, indi manginakon gintuton-an. 28Kon ang isa sa
inyo magpatindog sing tore, indi
25
bala nga ginaisip niya anay ang
bili, agod mahibaluan niya kon
bala makaigo ang iya kuwarta
sa pagpahuman sini? 29Kay basi
sa tapos nga mapasad niya ang
sadsaran, indi na sia makasarang
sa pagpatapos sang tore, kag
ang tanan nga makakita sini
magayaguta sa iya. 30Magasiling
sila, ‘Ini nga tawo nagpatindog
sing tore kag indi makapatapos.’
31
Kon ang hari nga may 10,000 ka
mga soldado magpakigsumpong
sa isa ka hari nga may 20,000 ka
mga soldado nga nagapadulong
batok sa iya, magapungko anay
sia kag magabinagbinag kon bala
may tuman sia nga kusog sa pagatubang sa nagapadulong nga
hari. 32Kon indi sia makasarang,
magapadala sia sing tiglawas sa
pagsugata sang nagapadulong
nga hari samtang malayo
pa sia sa pagpangayo sang
pagpakighusay.” 33Sa katapusan
si Jesus nagsiling, “Sa amo man
nga bagay, wala sing isa sa inyo
nga mangingintuton-an ko kon
indi sia magbiya sang tanan niya
nga pagkabutang.”
Pamalandong
Sa isa ka kultura kag
sosyedad nga nagahatag
sang
igtalupangod
sa
pamilya, ining mga tinaga
nga ginahambal ni Jesus sa
ebanghelyo mahimo nga indi
gid mahangpan sing maayo
kay ginasugo Niya ang
mga tawo nga nagapamati
sa Iya nga kinahanglan
nila talikdan ang kada
miyembro sang ila pamilya
agud nga mangin tampad
Niya nga mga gintutunan. Pero sa pagkamatuod,
ining Iya gintugda, indi
dapat pagkabigon sa literal
nga
pamaagi.
Maathag
kay
Jesus
nga
kon
patumbayaan gid sang isa
ka tawo ang iya pamilya kag
indi na mag-ulikid bangud
sang katuyuan nga mangin
disipulo nagapamatok sa
iya man mismo kasuguan
nahanungod sa paghigugma.
Ang luyag lamang Niya
hatagan sing importansya
sa sining Iya ginapangwali
sa mga tawo, amo ang
bug-os nga paghalad sang
kaugalingon
agud
nga
makasabat sa iya panawagan
nahanungod sa pagpalapnag
kag pagpanaksi sa maayong
balita sang kaluwasan.
Amo man ini ang rason
nga-a nagsaysay man siya

sang duha ka palaanggiran
kag sa kabug-usan, ining
duha nagapahayag sang
Iya pangagda sa tanan nga
kinahanglan
handa
sila
sa pagsabat pirmi sa Iya
panawagan, kabahin na diri
ang pagpaiway sang mga
personal nga mga bagay
nga makapahalipay sa isa ka
tawo nga may ara tinutuyo sa
pag-alagad sa Iya.
Pamangkot
1.Ang
ebanghelyo
subong
nga
Domingo
maathag
gid nga nagaagda sa akon nga mangin
tampad nga gintutun-an
ni Jesus. Sa akon mga naeksperiensayahan,
ano
bala ining mga bagay nga
ginpatumbayaan ko agud
nga mahatag ko ang akon
kaugalingon sing bug-os sa
Mahal nga Dios? Nag-abot
man bala sa punto nga bisan
ang akon pamilya akon anay
ginpaiway sa tinutuyo nga
maka-alagad ako sa Iya?
Ano bala ang nangin epekto
sini subong sa akon kabuhi?
Sa ano pa nga pamaagi
sarang
ako
makatuman
sang Iya pagbuot? Sa ano
pa nga mga hilikuton ukon
kahigayunan
sarang
ko
mapalapnag ang maayong
balita sang kaluwasan sa
akon pamilya kag sa akon
komunidad?
