We provide loving care to people with life-threatening illnesses, support to
their families, and service to the community in a spirit of enriching lives.
Letter from the Publishers
As we begin our 18th year with the Performing Arts in Nashville, we are
excited to be a part of one of the most robust Arts communities in the
country. In fact, Nashville ranks in the top 12 cities in the country for
culture, arts and entertainment, while Business Week named Nashville
one of the best places for artists to live in the United States. Therein lies
why Nashville is the home of the most talented artists in the country.
When you couple that with Nashville being ranked as the eighth
strongest economy in the country, we find ourselves living in a very
enviable community.
The “Playbill” you hold in your hand is the visual voice of the arts,
communicating the importance of the arts to the Nashville community.
One of our favorite quotes regarding the arts is from Kathleen O’Brien,
“We need the arts. They are not a luxury. They make us better people,
and they are at the core of strong, vibrant communities”. How true.
We thank our readers for being such an important part of the arts, and
making Nashville such a strong, vibrant community!
Enjoy the show!

Welcome to the Tennessee Performing
Arts Center. We hope you enjoy your
experience here with your family, friends,
and familiar characters from television,
film, and Broadway theatre.
We hope you connect with the artists on the stage
and the people in the seats surrounding you.
I’m curious. How do you usually connect with other
people these days? Are you more likely to send an
e-mail or text message than to talk on the phone?
Are you on Facebook?
What gives you a sense of community? Do you
“travel in circles” with people from your neighborhood,
school, place of worship, work-world, sports activities,
or civic, social, and business organizations? How
often to you come to TPAC with family and friends, or
spend time with them at movies, restaurants, athletic
events, museums, parks, and other activities?
We’ve thought a lot about all of this as we review the
past year and look forward to the next. “Connections,”
in fact, has become a theme of our 2010-11 Report
to the Community, which I hope you will check out at
tpac.org/annualreport.
One thing we know: In this electronic, computer age,
the live performance is more meaningful than ever.
A great evening or afternoon at the theatre is filled with
electrifying energy, laughter, and surprises. People
become touched or changed in some way, and they
can have interesting conversations after the show.
On the other hand, TPAC’s social media enhances
your experience with performances and your ways of
interacting with our shared community. Join the fun
on Facebook and TPAC’s YouTube Channel. Follow
the links on our web site for more information on our
for
productions. Respond to the surveys we send after
each show. Give us a call at 615-782-4000 or send
us an e-mail to patronservices@tpac.org. Simply put,
reconnect with us!
As our ways of connecting to each other continue to
change, I sincerely hope that TPAC will be a source of
meaningful and interactive social experiences for you.

What’s Coming to Nashville Next Season?
putting together the pieces of a puzzle
Building every season of HCA/TriStar Broadway
at TPAC is a complex process that begins with
the names of the shows on tour.
From one year to the next we never really know what will be
happening in New York or on the road. It really is like putting
together the pieces of a puzzle.
TPAC’s first goal is to offer local audiences a balance of new
titles, classics, and family shows while also showcasing the
breadth of what great, live theater provides: lavish sets, athletic
choreography, lush music, powerful drama, and clever humor.
We want high-quality productions that will engage, entertain,
and inspire our patrons.
Then, the long negotiations begin, based on available weeks in
Andrew Jackson Hall and times when tours can route to Nashville.
TPAC is now in the height of serious discussions, talking to agents and
producers about their shows so we can announce the exciting news in
April at a special event for season ticket-buyers, group leaders, and donors.
“Every year at this time, months before we announce the next
season, TPAC is fighting to land the best Broadway shows on
behalf of our community. We compete against cities like Charlotte,
Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix and others across the nation in
order to bring the best to Nashville,” said Steve Citerin, TPAC’s
Vice President of Marketing, Sponsorships, and Strategies.
“Many factors determine why a tour chooses a city, but the
absolute strongest factor is a large and supportive subscription
base. The more people who buy season tickets for HCA/TriStar
Broadway at TPAC, the sooner we’ll get the top titles on tour,
including the hot tickets in New York, the big winners at the Tony
Awards, and the blockbusters like Wicked and The Lion King.”
So, when it comes to TPAC’s Broadway series, bigger
truly is better.
Enjoy exclusive savings and benefits with a ticket package
for the exciting shows coming to TPAC this winter and spring!

about charles addams
The musical The Addams Family is inspired by the
creations of the legendary American cartoonist
Charles Addams, who lived from 1912 until 1988. In
1933, when he was just 21, his work was published
in The New Yorker, and over the course of nearly six
decades, he became one of the magazine’s most
cherished contributors. Addams is most widely known
for his characters that came to be called The Addams
Family, a group that evolved into multiple television
shows, motion pictures and now this Broadway
musical. The majority of his cartoons are occupied by
hundreds of other characters, but there is little doubt
that those that come to life on this stage are his most
beloved creations. Over 15 books of his drawings
have been published around the world, including the
new collection, The Addams Family: An Evilution.
Addams’ works appear in a number of prestigious
permanent collections including The New York Public
Library, The Museum of the City of New York and The
Library of Congress.

Destination therapy – a treatment option only

Ruby Howell

Heart Disease Survivor
A heart transplant wasn’t an option for Ruby. But destination therapy was.
Through the combined care of the cardiac specialists at Saint Thomas Heart
at Baptist Hospital and Saint Thomas Hospital, Ruby’s heart was given new
life by implanting a ventricular assist device (VAD) which helps the weakened
left ventricle pump blood throughout the body. Now Ruby’s improved strength
has allowed her to get back to what she loves most – singing in the choir at
Galilee Missionary Baptist Church. And isn’t that what surviving is all about?
Saint Thomas Heart provides the only Joint Commission certified destination
therapy program in the region. Learn more at MoreSurvivors.com

Monty Python’s
SPAMALOT
TPAC’s Jackson Hall
January 27-28
Back to taunt Nashville for a second time,
Monty Python’s Spamalot tells the
legendary tale of King Arthur’s quest to find
the Holy Grail. Diverting a bit from the renowned
myths, this hilarious musical features a line
of beautiful dancing girls, a flatulent Frenchman
and killer rabbits.
Outside there is a plague with a 50% chance
of pestilence and famine. Throughout the show,
Arthur, traveling with his servant Patsy, recruits
several knights to accompany him on his quest,
including Sir Bedevere, Sir Robin, Sir Lancelot
and Sir Galahad. They meet such characters
as the Lady of the Lake, Prince Herbert, Tim
the Enchanter, Not Dead Fred, the Black Knight,
and the Knights who say “Ni.”
This hilarious Broadway musical spoof is lovingly
ripped off from the internationally famous
comedy team’s most popular motion picture,
Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

magazine in the lobby or visit tpac.org/spamalot.

It was 1960 all over again when
“Hairspray,” an eight-time, Tony Award
winning musical, hit the Lipscomb
stage with a whirl of hairdos and
heartthrobs. It’s just another example
of Lipscomb’s commitment to the
arts in Nashville. The chair of our
theatre department was named one of
Nashville’s top ten directors for 2010,
and our partnership in staging Blackbird
Theater’s production of “Twilight of
the Gods” resulted in a “best new play”
recognition. And that’s just part of the
story. Experience it for yourself—there
are hundreds of arts performances
on campus annually that are open
to the public for little or no charge.
Go to events.lipscomb.edu. There’s
lots to see and hear at Lipscomb.
We’re not teasing.
One of our recent
performances took
a lot of teasing.
