Lectionary of Henry II Annunciation to the Shepherds
Lectionary of Henry II Annunciation to the Shepherds Tanner and Eric Info The picture portrays an angel announcing the news of Christ’s birth to shepherds. The angels extended arm is supposed to give it a sense of authority and instruction. Its gold background is influenced by Byzantine culture. Tempera on vellum The Piece Artist & Time Period Unknown Ottonian artist between 1002-1014 Opinions Tanner: The work really shows the power held by the angels and the urgency of the news of Christ’s birth. I find the fear from the shepherds towards the angel to be interesting. Eric: I think the painting demonstrates how people were scared of religion. Jesus and Christianity had so much power that people trembled in their presence. This painting shows this well.
