(SESI), one of the nation’s premiere special education providers. “This exciting partnership with SESI Schools will allow Rivendale schools to grow and enhance our ability to educate children with autism and other learning differences,” Rivendale insitute provides ABA alternative to public school for ASD children said school director Kerri Duncan, Ed.D. The Rivendale Center for Autism is the only private school for children with autism in southwest Missouri that uses Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy in its curriculum and offers its students, ages 3-to-10, intensive individualized instruction. ABA therapy is recognized by experts as the most effective treatment for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. “SESI Schools already has significant experience educating children with autism, but our exciting new relationship with the Rivendale schools solidifies our national footprint as a leader in the education of children on the autism spectrum,” said Michael Kaufman, CEO of the SESI Schools based in Yardley, Pa. SESI offers a variety of special education programs at 45 schools in 11 states and the District of Columbia for pupils with a broad range of development and physical disabilities, learning deficiencies, and social, behavioral and emotional issues. “Rivendale has dedicated leaders and a caring staff who are doing great things for their students,” Kaufman said. “I expect Rivendale to serve as a successful model for other SESI Schools in educating students on the autism spectrum.” “Missouri is a progressive and forward-thinking state where public school leaders recognize the merit of going outside their districts to do what’s best for students with special needs,” said Kaufman. Duncan said the merger with SESI Schools will also help the Rivendale schools adapt to a landmark Missouri law that went into effect Jan. 1, 2011, which requires insurance companies to provide coverage for children with autism who receive Applied Behavioral Analysis therapy. More information about SESI Schools, the Rivendale Institute of Learning and the Center for Autism is available at: "http:// www.sesischools.com/ rivendale_center_for_autism_institute_ of_learning" www.sesischools.com/ rivendale_center_for_autism_institute_ Faces of Autism on display at St. John’s Lillian Thompson of Newton, KS and Diana Schleuning of Mountain View, MO look at the Faces Of Autism on display in the lobby of St. John's Hospital, Springfield, MO. The program includes preemployment classes, work skill needs, career development, support services and integration into the work community. To be a part of the program, individuals must be over the age of 16 and referred through Vocational Rehabilitation. Applicants are then assesed to determine specific areas of interest, ability and need. Job Coaches provide training and on-the-job supervision. DCO employment program is now training work crews for employment. This group model of employment enables organizations to employ a group of individuals to work on site with a DCO job coach alongside. For example, the cleaning work crew cleans a local business once a week. Not only does the business end up with a clean space, but there is guaranteed attendance, quality control by the DCO job coach. As a contracted program with DCO, there is the benefit of having no taxes or benefits paid by the company. Presently, DCO is looking for businesses who might be interested in the possiblity of a DCO individuals or work crews assisting in their business. Presently, in both Greene and Taney Counties, adult workers are ready to begin employment "There's a great sense of pride in having a job. We're so honored to be able to help adults in our employment programs find a job that fits their skills, and helping employers fill these gaps with qualified staff" says Marisa DeClue, DCO Public Relations Director (pictured right). Homemade Honey Puffs Cereal 10 cups of puffed rice, corn, millet, or cereal flakes (or mixture) 3/4 c. olive or coconut oil 2/3 c. honey 1/3 t salt 1/3 c. carob powder (opt.) Combine cereal in large mixing bowl. Combine oil, honey, and salt. Mix well and poor over cereal mixture. Mix together with large spoon, or with hands. (This will be a sticky mixture.) If desired, sprinkle carob powder evenly over mixture and mix with spoon. Since mixture may need to be separated into two batches for baking, you can make one carob and one plain. Spread mixture onto a large baking pan. Put onto top rack of oven and bake for 10 minutes. Stir in pan, then repeat for 5 minute interavals until lighly browned. This is wonderful served cold or hot from the oven, with soy or rice milk. Keep for several weeks in a sealed plastic container. A wonderful alternative to those expensive flavored cereals. Garnish with nuts and dried or fresh fruit, as desired. page 10 www.MoAutismReport.com
