Trieste:
a mosaic of cultures
Many religions, one people
One of the characteristics that distinguishes
Trieste from the other Italian cities is its
cosmopolitan nature. Its history, since the
establishment of the free port in 1719, has been
marked by the granting of privileges of various
kinds to all the ethnic and religious minorities
that wished to settle in this trading centre.
There is still evidence of this communities to
testify a past that has provided the city with an
extremely interesting historical and cultural
memory, partially known and partially to be
rediscovered.
Many small “nations”, the name that was
given to the non-catholic communities by
the Austro-Hungarian Empire that, over
time, have taken root, evolved, transformed,
have been able to build and re-build new
relationships giving life to a special workshop
in which the differences become the symbol
of a peaceful life together.

Trieste, literary
atmospheres
Trieste, an inspiration
for many great writers
Trieste, which until 1918 was part of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire, has always
been a melting pot of races in which three
different cultures (Italian, German and
Slav) converge. Trieste’s environment has
allowed for a tight relationship with the
Central European culture, which between
the nineteenth and the twentieth century
was one of the most lively cultures in
literature, philosophy, science, music and in
the figurative arts.
A tour through the literary history, the
anecdotes and the life in the city of some
of the most outstanding figures in modern
literature; crucial places of an imaginary,
symbolic and real journey for getting
to know Italo Svevo, James Joyce and
Umberto Saba, as well as Fulvio Tomizza,
Veit Heinichen, Claudio Magris.
