The current plan on the books is to set the property tax rate at slightly higher than the “effective” rate, which is calculated along with appraisal rates to bring the city the same amount of tax money it collected last year. Karnes City wants to collect more money this year, though council members didn’t specify why during their Tuesday meeting. They did vote to hold public hearings which are required by law any time a city raises taxes, so citizens will have an opportunity to have their concerns heard. “Any time you increase over the effective tax rate, you have to have public hearings,” Pippen said. Concerned citizens can address council during either of two meetings set for September 8 and September 15. The floor will be open for comments during both public hearings. Council also voted to apply for $275,000 in Texas Community Development Block Grant funding. A 15 percent match will be required, leaving the city with a $41,250 obligation that will be met with 4B corporation funds, according to discussion. The money will be used to renovate Karnes City water See KC Council, page 3 PHOTO BY A. CORNELL GREEN Karnes City’s K. D. Glenn and J. The Tierra Pointe Apartment Homes, which were designed and orientated to capitalize on the relationship between the building site and its surrounding landscape, will feature amenities that range from a fitness and computer center to an outdoor swimming pool. In addition, this $10.7 million complex will offer an after school program for kids and utilize the services of an off-duty police officer to patrol the community at various times. Organizing a neighborhood watch group, several citizens are looking for volunteers to help keep watch during the late hours when vandalism, theft, and drug use cause problems. “It’s several people around the whole city. We decided what we really needed was to have a neighborhood watch,” said Larry Dement, one of the group’s members. “In this county, we don’t have a lot of officers and deputies to come to Runge.” The issue came before city council during their Tuesday meeting and council members decided to allow the group to have membership applications available at city hall. “It came before the coun- cil last night. They’re not going to be enforcing anything, it’s going to be more surveillance. They’ll call in to the sheriff’s department,” Lott said. “The main thing I’m concerned with is their safety. I don’t want any confrontation with any of the people that are doing wrong and (during the meeting) I made that clear.” Runge’s leadership have been tackling the problem of a lack of law enforcement for years. With the sheriff’s department so far away and county resources spread thin, response time to an incident in Runge is less than favorable. “I’ve made calls to the chief deputy (Steve Monsivais). He’s doing the best he can, but he doesn’t have the manpower.” Runge used to employ a night watchman, but the town has moved away from combating the crime prob- lem with city-hired help. “The night watchman doesn’t do any good because [criminals] can watch the night watchman. They can report what they see, but they have a very narrow vision of what’s going on,” Lott said. As for hiring a city marshal to provide official, local law enforcement, Lott said there’s no money in the budget for See Neighborhood Watch, page 3 AAA News Back to school As school comes to an end Thursday, August 26, 2010 excitement is in the air. Council also addressed a letter from the Karnes City Park Board containing proposals and updates. Board members expressed concern with the lack of rain. “We wondered if sprinklers could be set out so we don’t lose grass and plants,” the letter read. “We know cost is an issue and respect the council’s decision on this, but in the past the city has been awesome about watering. We were fortunate during the months of June and July (but) August has not been kind to us.” The letter also contained details about nine trees that have been purchased and are waiting on the fall season to be planted. “I ‘d hate to see any more trees planted in park A,” Pippen said. “That area is really not suitable for trees.” Council member Leroy Skloss said he wants the city to get the trees in the ground quickly. “We probably ought to try to do those trees if we can. Fall is getting here,” he said. The letter also addressed a potential labor donation from the John B. Connally From page 1 that kind of expenditure. “We’re under budget constraints also. What takes precedence first is your water and sewer system. Everything has skyrocketed in cost and we’re in a recession,” he said. The neighborhood watch system is in its beginning stages, but organizers hope to set shifts for members to keep eyes on the Runge city streets. The problem isn’t epidemic, according to Lott, but a few bad apples are giving Runge a bad name, he stressed. “We’ve got good kids. We’ve got good people in Runge, it’s just those 8 or 10 people that are causing problems. They’re on drugs. They sleep during the day and roam at night and cause problems,” Lott said. Our school nurses have the opportunity to work with young mothers and help them with the challenge of continued breastfeeding while continuing their education, exclusively for 6 months which is the current World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control recommendation. WIC not only provides the nutrition education but also the healthy foods required for pregnant, breastfeeding mothers and children. They try to postpone it, asking their doctor to just let them try harder. Many people think insulin means they are a failure. They also may think managing diabetes with insulin will be just like when they saw their grandparents struggle with insulin. Doctors recommend insulin when they believe it is needed to keep your blood glucose in the ranges that reduce your risk for complications. On average, the pancreas of a person with diabetes produces 50 percent less insulin every five years. This means you may be doing everything your doctor told you to do, including eating the right foods in the right amounts, exercising daily, and taking diabetes pills, but your blood glucose is not in the recommended ranges. If you are not achieving your A1C goals, your doctor will eventually prescribe insulin for you. If your blood glucose is out of range even though you are trying very hard, most diabe- tes experts believe you should not delay starting insulin for more than three months. If your blood work still shows you are out of range, go back and tell your doctor you are ready to try insulin. Insulins today are very different than even a few years ago. One type will keep a steady amount of insulin in your blood for 24 hours with just one injection—there are no peaks and valleys to deal with. You can use a rapid acting type to deal with the abrupt rise in blood glucose after meals. Insulin pens make giving yourself the right dose much easier and with so much less discomfort than older methods because the needles are so thin and sharp. Many people with diabetes can give themselves their rapid acting insulin right at the dinner table in a restaurant without anyone realizing it. Some people think they will never be able to give themselves insulin because they are frightened by needles. There are many ways to reduce this fear, and many people have learned how to deal with these fears. Others think they will be unable to travel or do things they want, like hiking or bike riding, with insulin because they have to keep it refrigerated. There are pocket-sized cool packs that keep insulin bottles or pens adequately cooled even during Texas summers! Just periodically soaking the cool packs in water allows them to keep insulin cool. If you want to learn more about insulin and how to deal with things like giving yourself an injection, traveling, doing things you have always done, or even just doing your job while taking insulin, consider signing up for the Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes five classes that cover nine different topics. Classes are taught by volunteer nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and other health professionals from your community. Texas AgriLife Extension Service, Karnes/Wilson Counties are offering free classes starting September 9. Call the Extension office at 830-780-3906 to sign up by August 27 to learn about insulin and the latest information about managing type 2 diabetes. And why are they so different from one another? What essential beliefs or practices do they share in common? As I learn about the faith of Christians who worship and serve in ways that seem different or unfamiliar to me, can I in fact learn more about my own faith? These questions and more will be explored at Pawnee United Methodist beginning September 12, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. The church is beginning an eight-week study called “Christianity’s Family Tree: What Other Christians Believe and Why,” and you are invited to join them. According to Rev. Beth Tatum, pastor of Pawnee UMC, “These are questions that grip our attention, and yet often we don’t discuss them. We want to explore what God might be saying to us through the lives of other Christians, and we hope to do this in a setting of sensitivity, respect, and mutual learning, that the family of believers may be strengthened.” Each week will feature a different branch of Christianity including Orthodoxy, Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Presbyterian, Baptist, Pentecostal and Methodist. This special event will include elements of worship, sermons, and a small-group study that features videos, Bible study, and discussion. The study, published by Abing- don Press, was developed by the Reverend Adam Hamilton, pastor of the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas, and is intended for anyone who has an interest in learning about different denominations and faith traditions within Christianity. Rev. Tatum will lead the study and share personal ecumenical experiences including Greek Orthodox worship on Christmas Eve in Bethlehem, living with the Roman Catholic monks at St, Gregory’s monastery in Shawnee, Oklahoma and Pentecostal revivals. Pawnee UMC is located on FM 798 near FM 72. For more information, contact Rev. Tatum at 361-375-2221 or revbeth.tatum@yahoo.com. Feed your horse for a YEAR! The Karnes County Times The Karnes County Times Karnes County’s only locally owned newspaper Mooning brought a paddling in court Willis Webb On occasion, this space carries a message suggesting one of the biggest problems in public education today is, sadly, lack of parental guidance or inspiration. Times change and, without advocating the methods in this story, the incident does underscore what can happen when parents are called into account for the attitude and performance of their children. Almost 50 years ago, Roy and Ginny Kelly were raising three daughters near Stafford in rural Fort Bend County. Roy and his dad, Buck, had a used car business but Roy also felt an obligation to civic duty so he got elected justice of the peace. He took the detached garage at his home and turned it into a Western-themed courtroom, complete with a sign proclaiming: “Judge Roy Kelly, The Law West of Stafford,” a take-off on a famous Texas frontier character, Judge Roy Bean, The Law West of the Pecos. One summer Sunday afternoon, I was visiting the Kelly home when the judge received a call from the Highway Patrol (as Texas Department of Public Safety troopers were known then). They informed the judge they were bringing a carload of teenaged boys to his court for an incident on a Fort Bend stretch of highway between Houston and Freeport, where there’s a nice beach. Within minutes, two DPS patrol cars arrived escorting an older model Chevy station wagon with several surfboards strapped atop it. A DPS sergeant strolled toward us while the other three troopers rounded up six young men from the station wagon and herded them toward Kelly’s courtroom. “Judge, we were just sittin’ on the side of the highway in our cars because the traffic coming back from Freeport was so thick, we couldn’t work it,” said the sergeant with a grin. “All of a sudden here comes this speeding station wagon with a bare butt against the window, so we stopped ‘em and brought ‘em here.” “Bring ‘em into the courtroom,” a pokerfaced Kelly said. Once everyone was situated in the courtroom, Kelly questioned each young man Opinion about their roles and positions in the station wagon. Upon getting a confession from the youngster who’d dropped his pants, as he said, “to moon a carload of girls,” Kelly ascertained that the boys were from Bellaire, not far from his courtroom. He got “mooning” boy’s father’s name and phone number and called him. He told the man he had his son and some of his friends in his courtroom and wondered if the father could drive out. The father quickly agreed. When the father arrived, Kelly told him the full story and announced that he’d found the man’s son guilty of indecent exposure and was fining him $115.50, including court costs. “Now,” Kelly said as he turned his head and looked at a paddle hanging on the wall behind his bench, “is there anything about further punishment you’d like to do?” The father nodded and said, “Yessir, Judge, there sure is. Now, if y’all don’t mind clearing the courtroom, I’ll take care of it.” The other teen boys, the troopers, the judge and I all exited the courtroom and we quickly heard the paddle being applied vigorously. In a few minutes, the father and son appeared outside and the man announced to Kelly, “Judge, I can’t guarantee he’ll never do that again, but if he does it’ll be with a red butt.” In subsequent months, Kelly took more actions about parental responsibility. The school district was having a problem with children with lice in their hair and the administration could get no help from parents in rectifying this public health problem, so they sought the judge’s input. He told them to expel children who didn’t correct the problem after warnings and letters home. Then, he said, after being out of school the prescribed time under truancy laws and not returning clean, he’d drag the parents into court and fine and/or jail them for their child’s truancy. After several rounds of those legal procedures, the lice problem and the truancy disappeared. Those procedures couldn’t be imposed today but it sure says something about making parents take responsibility for their children’s actions. In Karnes County: 3-month: $9.75 6-month: $19.50 12-month: $39.00 Be safe: Designate a driver Editor: On August 14, 2010, my nephew, Sheldon Ross Atwood, 22, from Vega, TX, was killed in a wreck by a 21 year old drunk driver who failed to stop at a stop sign, slamming into the side of the car my nephew was driving. Sheldon’s dear mother, my sister, will never be the same. Even though her faith in God carries her throughout her day, she will forever feel the despair of losing her oldest son. A young man who touched so many lives, and with so much life himself, was taken from us Pamela Baker All summer long I have been trying to talk to my son Andrew about starting Kindergarten. He didn’t seem all that interested, so I had been a little worried about it. When anyone asks him if he was excited about going to school he would shrug his shoulders and say, “yeah,” unconvincingly. He has been going to It’s a Small World Nursery School for a couple of years, so he was used to the routine of getting up and going to school, but elementary school is a big step. On his first day, all dressed up in his new short pants and favorite Super Mario Wii shirt, with his Toy Story backpack looking way too big on his little frame, I began to tear up just a little. My husband drove Andrew and Molly to school that first day, so he could walk them to their class. On my way to work I began to think about my little guy, in that big school, and I started to really cry. So I called my husband. “He’s too little to go to school!” I cried. Tina Collins Kenedy “Oh Pam, he’s so happy and excited. He’s going to be fine,” he reassured me. Sure enough, when my husband walked him to his class Andrew didn’t have any problems saying goodbye, and went into his classroom without any fuss at all. When I picked him up in the evening he told me about all the things that happened that day and asked me what they were going to do tomorrow. On the second day I dropped him off at school with his sister. A few hours later, his principal called me and explained that Andrew had eaten his lunch for breakfast, so they ordered him a lunch from the cafeteria. When I picked him up on this second day Andrew quickly informed me that I was to now pack two sandwiches and two juice boxes, so he could have a backup lunch in case he forgot and ate some of it the morning. While getting him ready for bed on the second night, I washed his hair and helped him brush his teeth. He talked about school again. “I wonder what is going to happen on three day,” he said. “Today was red day, RE-D,” he spelled. And then I knew he was going to do just fine in Kindergarten, as long as I remember to pack an extra sandwich. Introductions Joe Brubaker Folks as school started this past Monday, it brought back a flood of memories to this old teacher, coach and administrator. I want to relate to you how I first met a young High School student. It was my first year as the High School Principal at Farmersville School. I was sitting in my office when I heard a loud banging going on in the hallway. I jumped up and went into the hallway. There, off to my right was a young man opening and closing a locker banging the door back and forth. He was looking toward the north stair steps and as I was coming from the south he never saw me approaching. As I reached him I tapped him on the shoul- der and said, “Young man are you looking for trouble? Instantly his right hand shot upward and he said, “How do you do/” Instantly I knew this was a bright lad with a sense of humor. I took him to my office and we had a talk. I cannot remember what, if any, punishment I administered . Be that as it may John Patterson went on to college and got his PHD! I was right; he was and is a bright man with an unusual sense of humor. So teachers enjoy your students and give them your best! Students do the best you can and listen to your teachers. Who knows you might just learn something that will change your life. After all teachers aren’t trouble! They can and will be helpful friends if you give them a chance. His automotive restoration business went bankrupt, he hasn’t been able to find another job, and he has nowhere else to go. What can we do to help him? John Dear John, You have to define what helping your son really means. In my mind, you haven’t helped him at all if he’s still squatting in your basement five years from now. That’s called being an enabler. But it’s not going to help him, either, if you toss him on the street and say “You’re 36. Be a man!” I think you should formulate a progressive plan somewhere between those two extremes—something that includes a move-out deadline, but will help him regain some dignity. As part of living with you, I’d require him to do three or four things. One is that he abides by your household rules. If he’s going to live in your home, he should act the way you want him to act. Number two, he needs to be engaged in some kind of regular physical activity. Even if you have to pay for it, you could get a membership at a gym or buy some exercise equipment. Exercise stimulates the mind, and he needs that right now. It’ll also be great for his body. Getting beat up like he’s been can be tough at that age. It can lead to depression if you don’t engage in physical activity and goal setting. Next, is to think about career steps. He could start with a part-time job to get some money in his pockets. Then, work on a longterm career goal. He knows how to turn a wrench, and he probably likes that kind of Life work. His mind works spatially, which means he can look at things and figure out how they operate. So, it might be a good idea to move in that direction. It doesn’t even have to be cars. He could learn to work on boats or aircraft. You don’t want to beat the kid when he’s down, but you don’t want to participate in his sewage, either. Help him clean up his life, and get him out of there as fast as possible. It’s what’s best for everyone! — Dave Dear Dave, We live in Boston, and we’ve got three kids who are almost ready for college. My wife and I make about $114,000 a year combined, and that includes a $34,000 a year pension I receive. Should we use the pension money to pay for their tuition, or should we let them take out student loans? Geoff Dear Geoff, There’s no way I’m going to send anyone into student loan debt, especially when the household income is in the six-figure range! Now, that assumes the kids choose a college you can afford, but with your income you guys could handle tuition at most state colleges. And that means all the kiddos are going to have to pick a reasonably-priced school if they expect you to foot the bill. We’ve got to use a little common sense here. No champagne taste on a beer pocketbook! You guys are doing okay, but you can’t afford to send these kids to $30,000 a year schools. All this will be hitting you at about the same time, so I want you to cash flow this thing, and pay as you go along. College is great, but you need to invest your money into something that fits your budget! — Dave Thursday, August 26, 2010 Serving Karnes County since 2010 Eating Up By Amelia Simmons Clarence Birdseye, the pioneer of frozen foods was born in Brooklyn in 1886. According to family legend an ancestor saved the life of an English queen by shooting an attacking hawk through the eye, thereby earning the name “Birds Eye.” It makes a good story. He was modest about his accomplishments, insisting that the Eskimos had used his technique for quick freezing for centuries. Birdseye’s wife, Eleanor, was an intrepid woman. Her father was the founder of the National Geographic Society and she took it in stride when Clarence moved her and their newborn son – named Kellogg – to a remote shack in Labrador, Canada. There, he traveled by sled to acquire furs and she tended the traps and the baby boy. This was where the real fascination with freezing foods developed. Clarence put cabbages into the baby’s bath pan, added salt water and exposed the pan to the frigid weather. Voila: the Birdseyes had green vegetables all winter and we got TV dinners. Don’t use frozen cabbage for this one, which comes from Louisiana. Calinda Cabbage 1 large Savoy cabbage, outer leaves removed. 1 cup rice boiled 1 cup chopped chicken meat, no skin 1 cup ham, cooked and minced ¼ cup fine chopped chives ½ teaspoon cayenne salt and pepper 4 slices of bacon Variations Sliced sautéed mushrooms Minced garlic Sausage, crumbled and cooked Sauce. 1 tablespoon butter 1 tablespoon flour 1 cup milk ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg Salt and pepper to taste Cut a deep slit in the stem of the cabbage and soak in cold water for 30 minutes. Boil the cabbage in salted water for 10 minutes, then drain until it is cool. Make a forcemeat by combining the meats, cayenne, chives and seasonings. At this point, add any desired variations and if needed, a little beaten egg yolk to adhere the forcemeat. Stand the cabbage on its stem. Beginning at the center, gently pry open the leaves without breaking the ribs. Fill the spaces between the leaves with about 1 tablespoon forcemeat and then close together. Tie the cabbage firmly in cheesecloth (as if you were boiling a pudding). Tie kitchen twine around the bundle as if you are trussing a chicken, lay the cabbage into a large pot of simmering water and cook for 45 minutes. Prepare the sauce, seasoning well. Remove and drain the cabbage. Slice into quarters and serve very hot with the sauce poured over. Serves 4 * For more financial help please visit daveramsey. com. Please help us conserve water! Effective immediately through Wednesday, September 1, please do not water your yard and make the best efforts to restrict your water use. We expect scheduled pump repairs to cause a temporary reduction in water capacity. This is completely normal and will ultimately result in improved efficiency once repairs are completed on Wednesday. Here are some tips to help with water conservation in the next week: 1. Turn off the water when brushing teeth, which saves three gallons each day. 2. Set lawn mower blades one notch higher, which means less evaporation and saves 500 – 1,500 gallons per month. 3. Please avoid non-essential outside water use for the next week, such as watering the yard. Thank you for your patience during this temporary inconvenience, and we appreciate your environmental contribution while the system is optimized. Repairs will be completed by Wednesday, September 1. In this passage we are told that Jesus healed a woman who had suffered for eighteen years with a spirit that had crippled her, causing her to be bent over and unable to stand upright. The leader of the synagogue criticized Jesus for healing on the Sabbath, the crowd, however, rejoiced at the wonderful things Jesus was doing. Pastor Wally Schievelbein spoke in his sermon of how God had given the law as a gift to humankind, and in turn humans took this gift of God and used it as a way to browbeat others into submission. In the same way God sent Jesus to free us from the multitude of ways that the world beats us down, to proclaim to us that we are freed from the bondage of our sins, free to live our lives with our hearts and our hands lifted heavenward in praise of the the God that has liberated us with the life, death and resurrection of his son. South Texas Christian Center news Contributed By: Judy Berry “Deeper Meaning of Jesus Parables” What a wondrous time South Texas Christian Church had today as Pastor Jim Pogue reviewed sermons from the past two weeks shedding even more light on the parables Jesus gave us. Hi opening statement was when you understand how much Jesus loves us you will love Him back. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes shall not die but have everlasting life.” When you really see what this means you fall in love with God and become convicted to love Him with all your heart, mind, soul and spirit and your neighbor as yourself. Some may be motivated by an unholy fear of God thinking I will be condemned if I don’t do certain things but John 3:17 says: “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world but to save the world through Him.” When we view this in proper perspective we can then understand the magnitude of God’s amazing love and respond in the proper way! In the Parable of the Prodigal Son coming from Luke 15:11-31, Jim retold the story sharing insights the Holy Spirit had given him. The youngest son in the story takes all the blessings his father gives him and leaves home. The oldest son thinks of himself as perfect and is in fact very self-righteous. The prodigal comes to his senses and does so because all this time his father prays for him to come back home! The older son pleases the Father but waits for his inheritance and all the time is full of pride and selfishness. The younger son comes back to his Father as he realizes how good he once had it. The Father is looking for him to come and sees him afar off and runs to meet him. The son falls down on his knees asking for forgiveness but the Father pulls him up and kisses him and bestows blessing on him as he asks for a robe, ring and sandals be given him. In the meantime the older son comes home and finds this party happening for the younger brother and is mad. What happened in this story? It is clear the Father gives each of his sons a free will and loves them unconditionally. Our natural fathers would not have done things this way but God the Father did. All of us are either the older brother who is self-righteous looking down our noses at the lost and fallen sinners in the world wanting nothing to do with them or we are the lost and fallen needing a Father like this to pray us back into a right and proper relationship with the Father. Hopefully we will chose to be like the Father and help others come back to God. God will let us choose as He gives each of us a free will. In the story of the Good Samaritan given in Luke 10:3037, Jim reviewed this with new light. Our neighbor is our spouse and children followed by family, friends and those in need. “Life gets tough leaving us broken, naked, poor, in pain and suffering,” remarked Jim and in this story we see the Levite who does not help as the man in desperate need will not make him look good so he passes him by. The Good Samaritan however stops, picks up the injured man and carries him to an inn where the innkeeper takes care of him. This Good Samaritan is not accepted in society but makes sure this man is taken care of. This story shows who our neighbor is and who the Good Samaritan is. The Good Samaritan represents Jesus who comes to heal us in our all our suffering. He takes us to the Innkeeper who represents the Holy Spirit who comes to live inside us to comfort us and be our helper in every way. It takes money to help this man who must stay in the Inn and the money was paid for by Jesus Christ who paid the price through His life, death and resurrection! Think how much Jesus loves you. Today you have a choice to make to live for Jesus and be set free and have life and have it more abundantly! Next week we will have our fellowship meal immediately following our service and invite you to join! There will be a back to school swim party on Friday, August 20th. Visit us on line at www.stxcc. org _______________________ “Freedom in Christ” Once again Pastor Jim Pogue reviewed from the past weeks on finding real freedom in Christ. The first two things were to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and spirit and our neighbor as our self. Our neighbor is anyone coming across our path as in the case of the Good Samaritan. God gives us aptitudes in which to love our neighbor so that we can provide for their needs. When we read the Bible from cover to cover we find God showing His great love for us all the way through and when we believe Jesus is Lord and confess with our mouths and believe in our hearts we are saved. Romans 10:9. When we are in relationship in Christ we can measure our spiritual pulse according to Galatians 5:16-26. We were told to be honest before God in this and to ask Him how we measure up. Are we walking in the spirit or in the flesh? Today’s sermon was taken from Luke 8:5-15 which reads: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on the rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown. When he heard this, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Jesus disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said the secrets of the kingdom of God have been given to you, but to others I speak in parables so that “though seeing they may not see; and though hearing, they may not understand.” “This is the meaning of the parable: the seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but have no root. They believe for awhile, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.” In this parable there are four types of soil: first, the seed on a hardened path somewhat likened to concrete that is so hard nothing will grow on it. The second seed falls among rocks which choke the life out of it and the third seed falls among thorns which do the same. The fourth seed is the good soil which produces a great crop. The seed is the Word of God and the devil comes to take the word from hearts so that we won’t believe and be saved. Seed among rocks have joy when they first believe but in the time of testing they fall away. The seeds among thorns are those who hear but are choked by the worries, riches and pleasures of life and the seed on good ground are those who have a noble and good heart, who hear the Word and retain it and produce much fruit in their life. Pastor Jim remarked that we all start out with good soil but something happened along the way of life. All of us fit in one of these categories; what category do you find yourself in? In Old Testament times the enemy would throw weeds in fields at night. We get too busy to talk to God and our enemy comes in to us and put weeds in our life too, and we need to be careful and pull them out by the roots! If you don’t get the roots out you will have weeds back! In life you must get to the root of the problem and dig that out so you can be truly free in Christ! Some have been abused as children whether emotionally or physically which can make our soil bad. Even a small crack can let in some light to cause something to grow! God’s Word can find that crack and come in and break up that hard packed soil so you can be free at last no matter what happened in life to cause your soil to be bad. Jesus came to set you free so you can have life. Be set free today as you examine your soil and let God work on you. No matter what you may have done you are forgiven as Jesus paid your sin debt in full. Remember the weeds of life try to choke God’s Word out so watch and be vigilant in pulling up weeds as they try to come in! We had several workers from our church that had a delightful time taking meals to our teachers throughout the week and are so glad we had an opportunity to honor them as they start a new year! Our prayers are with all our treasured teachers and students! United Methodist Church is located at 201 North Esplanade. The devotion for this week is “God’s Blessings” by Derek Green, senior. Scripture is from I John 4:16, “From the fullness of His grace we have received one blessing after another.” God blesses us all the time through different situations. Everything He does is for a reason. We, as followers of Christ, don’t always understand nor comprehend how God works. He is within hap- py moments when our mind and body is at peace; but He is also omnipresent in moments of sorrow and pain. Every moment we have a blessing because He is always at work in us and through us and within us. Pain can be as much of a blessing as a great accomplishment due to the fact that pain breaks down human being’s egotistical barrier that allows us to believe “We” can take care of ourselves. This became overly apparent in my own life this past summer. I believed I was the “biggest and baddest” around because I just had been awarded All-State in baseball. Never once did I thank God for allowing and helping be to perform at such a high level. God blessed me with that honor and I was immensely happy. The very next week my father committed suicide. I didn’t understand at the time why God would “torment” me to such an emotional and internal extreme. I was absolutely devastated!! I actually thought He hated me for some reason I couldn’t understand. This wasn’t the case at all. He was using great pain and confusion as a blessing in my life. He changed my soul, heart, and confidence that day to where now I truly offer Him the grace He deserves. I give all my talent and accomplishments to Him instead of my own egotistical self. God is the answer to all, in every situation He puts us in, He is blessing our faith and love in Him to become the Christian He aspires us to be. Prayer: I pray that everyone may receive and love ALL of God’s blessings to us. Amen Kenedy First Baptist Church news Contributed By: Jamie McKee What About Me? Telling a childhood story about his family making their annual trek to a favorite swimming hole, Rev. John Wheat began his Sunday sermon revealing how his father played a practical joke on him during one of the trips. It seems the older Mr. Wheat had a sense of humor, and during one of the family swim sessions, he and a friend hid under the platform in the lake and would call out, “John! John!” as our, then young, pastor would swim around the platform puzzled that he couldn’t find the source of the beckonings. Eventually, he did see his father and friend hiding underneath the structure, between the water and the bottom of the deck. Mr. Wheat held out his hand for his son to grab. Trusting his father, young Wheat took his elder’s hand – quickly finding himself being pulled under the water and floating buoy, and up to safety at the surface - underneath the platform - with his father and family friend. Together they would pull the same trick on other family members as they swam by, never being detected. “It was like having a fort,” said Wheat as he described the adventure. Wheat said while he didn’t understand the point of being under the platform, he trusted his father enough to let him pull him under the water and buoy to the other side, and up to the surface to join his father. “It’s the same with the things we’re not sure about in life today… and trusting God,” said Wheat. “There are a lot of things in life we wonder, ‘Well what’s the purpose of this? What’s the meaning of this?’ And we might not know exactly what the purpose or the meaning is, but by faith, and with confidence, we continue to move forward… allowing people who have been there before us, to secure us and encourage us along the way. As we go along, we may even begin to wonder what the meaning of life is,” explained Wheat. Continuing, Wheat said there had recently been a survey done by USA Today asking readers, “If you could get a clear and direct response from God on one question, what would you ask God?” Overwhelmingly, the majority of respondents said they would ask, “What is the meaning of my life?” To answer that question, Wheat said (tongue in cheek) he turned to “one of the greatest theologians we know today… Charles Schulz, author of the comic strip Peanuts.” He referenced one publication where Charlie Brown and Lucy were talking about life. Lucy described it as a lawn chair. You can face it to the back to see where you’ve been. You can place it so you can see where you are, and you can face it to the front to see where you are going. Charlie Brown responded to her analogy by saying, “I can’t even get mine unfolded!” “When we stop and think about life and think about where we are going, where’s your direction today? Do you have your chair facing back so you can see where you’ve been and focus on that? Facing in such a way to where you can see where you are, and focusing on that? Or, do you have your chair facing in such a way you can see where you are going?” asked Wheat. Wheat explained since we, ourselves, did not create life, we can talk to the Creator of life Himself. “What better way to talk to the Creator than to read in the rule book he has given us?” asked Wheat. God has a plan for you and me, and He wants us to know it. “It’s not something He holds in secret and it’s not something He makes hard to find, but it’s something He wants us to know… God wants to re- veal that purpose and bring it about in the life He has given to you,” said Wheat. Referencing Colossians 1:16-17, Wheat said the verses boil down to three things: 1. All things have been created by God. 2. All things have been created for God. 3. In Him all things are held together. “When we stop and put these three things together… we recognize there you are gong to find the purpose of life. You see, it’s not really about me. And, it’s not really about you. It’s really about God. Because God’s the One who’s created it. God’s the One who’s even created it for Himself. And in Him, He’s the One who holds it all together. And when we find ourselves in that kind of a relationship, we can read and understand from the Creator what it is He’s called and asked us to do.” There are also three levels of living: 1. Survival – where you are just getting by. Some people are in this level and focus on surviving. 2. Success – where you are comfortable. Some people are in this level and focus on their success and enjoy it. But, God doesn’t want us to stay in the first two levels, He wants us to rise to the 3rd level: Significance – realizing you have been called to have an influence for the Kingdom of God. Wheat explained what significance is, “A place where we can truly come to understand that God is doing something in our lives for the benefit of others. And, it’s not just about me and it’s not just about you, or about us. How do we know that we have understood what life is about and the true meaning of life? It’s only when we come to understand that everything has been made by God and made for God, and that in God everything holds together.” Community Bible Church news Contributed By: Patsy Crutchfield Complete Surrender Pastor Curtis Moyer's message was based around the theme of complete surrender to following God. We often get off in a certain direction and think we are sailing right when all the time we are veering off and going our way and not God's way. He will guide our footsteps, and we must learn that when he does, we must listen and follow His guidance. He is the one who knows where we should be. So what does complete surrender mean? First, ths dedication means submission, giving up what we are doing to surrender and obey Him. In Mark 1: 1920 , we read of this when Jesus called his disciples. "And when he had gone a little further thence, he saw James, the son of Zebedee , and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets. And straightway he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants and went after Him." Trust and obey. It is not about what we feel on the inside, but about obeying God's words. We must change the way we think and follow him and obey what we know is correct. WE must keep ourselves in a lifestyle that is pleasing to God. Submit, obey and don't look back. When we serve Jesus, we can't just "give it a try." We must submit and surrender 100% and follow him. Complete surrender means denial of the world. John 2:15 tells us, "Do not love the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him." We must take the opportunity extended by God and the blessings of that offered to us when Jesus said, "Follow me," WE can always think of many things that keep us from the opportunities to serve. These obstacles may be what we see as obligations - family matters, friends, work, and various "important" occasions. These keep us from taking the opportunities that God gives us to serve him. We must not let worldly expectations keep us away from Him, but we must separate ourselves from the world. Another thing needed for complete surrender to God is 100% determination. This involves correct priorities. We must be determined to follow the Word of God. In Luke 9: 61 we read of one asked to follow him, " And another also said, "Lord, I will follow thee, but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house." This is not the way of the Lord. We must also have a clear perception of our missions. We must go forward to where God wants us to be. Luke 9: 62 tells us, "And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God." We must live in excitement about our surrender, give it our all and finish strong. Complete surrender is giving all to God and following Him forward to where he leads us, not just where we think we should be. We praise God for the beginning of a new school year and for the progress in Gabby's illness. We keep the following in our prayers: Sam Swierc, J. L . Kampsey, Dorothy Jean Yeater, Dori Yeater and the school personnel as they continue to work to go forward with their students. The Karnes County Times Karnes County’s only locally owned newspaper Church Thursday, August 26, 2010 Serving Karnes County since 2010 St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church news Contributed By: Pat Hemby The Thirteenth week of Pentecost was celebrated at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church of Kenedy with Reverend Dr. Robert Johnston as pastor. Neil Nichols was the Lay Minister and Reader of the Lessons. The First Lesson was Jeremiah 1:4-10. Jeremiah was concerned about witnessing for the Lord because he was so young and might not know the right words to use. He was also afraid that he would not be listened to. The Lord assured him that he would put the words in his mouth and give him the power to do his work. The Second Lesson was Hebrews 12:18-29. Paul reminds the Hebrews that God has dealt with them in the past, but now he sent Jesus to be the mediator of a new covenant with them. Through Christ they can now be accepted into the kingdom of God. Reverend Johnston read the Gospel according to Luke 13:10-17. Jesus was being criticized by the leader of the synagogue for healing a woman on the Sabbath. Jesus called them hypocrites because they take of their own things on the Sabbath. Why should Jesus refrain from healing a woman who had been suffering for years? They think only of themselves, not of the needs of others. Jesus was criticized for healing someone on the Sabbath and was told it was a sin. Jesus lived a perfect life without sin and yet he took the sins of the world on himself. We seek the grace of God to live each day in his will, but we are weak. Sin is an obstacle to our relationship with God and to living as he wants us to. It distorts our relationship with him and with others. Sin is a spiritual death. We must have the conscience and willfulness to live as God wants us to. Satan is the personification of evil which we must overcome. We can do this through baptism and confession. Turn to God and do what he asks. Get rid of your baggage of “sins” and be reconciled with God. We must train ourselves to recognize sin and deny it. Perhaps a spiritual director and daily prayer would help. It can strengthen and guide you in the right paths. Learn to talk to God and also to listen to him. Get rid of everything that stands in the way of a fruitful relationship with God. First Presbyterian Church news Contributed By: Kathy Chapman August 22 at First Presbyterian Church Pastor Chuck Gibbs’ sermon text on August 22 was Luke 13: 10-17: “Jesus was teaching in one of the meeting places on the Sabbath. There was a woman present, so twisted and bent over with arthritis that she couldn't even look up. She had been miserable for eighteen years. When Jesus saw her, he called to her: ‘Woman, you're free!’ He laid hands on her and suddenly she was standing straight and tall, giving glory to God. The person in charge of the meetingplace was furious because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath. He said to the congregation, ‘Six days have been defined as work days. If you want to be healed, come on a work day, but do not come on the seventh day. It is the Sabbath.’ But Jesus shot back, ‘You fraud! Each Sabbath you untie your cow or donkey from its stall, you lead it out for water, and you think nothing of it. The congregation was delighted and cheered Jesus on.” Pastor Gibbs said he often heard people say that they did not go to church because “Christians are just a bunch of hypocrites.” He said he never heard anyone say that Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists or Jews were hypocrites – just Christians. It seems hypocrisy is reserved for us Christians. Could it be that Christians are held to a higher standard of love, peace, justice, and mercy? The next time someone tells you that they do not go to church because Christians are hypocrites, tell them: “That is absolutely correct! You are right! Christians are hypocrites! In fact, that is what church is all about – a school for the worst hypocrites! Because God loves each one of us unconditionally even though we are sinners and hypocrites, he created a school for us. Everyone is welcome! Please call Pastor Donna Martin at 210-8619529 or Ann Esse 830-7803590 for more information. This past Sunday Fashing UMC lifted prayers for the family and friends of those who have recently passed away, for those who are ill, for students of all ages, for teachers and administrators preparing for a new school year, and for safe travel for all going off to college. The organist this week was Ann Esse. Several guests were in attendance and were welcomed to worship. Rev. Martin’s sermon was based on Luke 13:10-17, the story of Jesus’ healing of the crippled woman. The sermon was entitled “Expanded Vision” and it examined the text in light of the woman’s ability to see the world from an upright, life-expanding position once she was healed. Pastor Donna spoke about ways our vision is limited or “bent” by prior experiences and how Jesus calls us to him for healing so that our vision can also be upright and expanded. She specifically focused on perceptions of the church today and the healing need- ed by some where the church is concerned. Congregants were invited to go out into the community, living the message of the Gospel, and inviting others to come and see the One who frees us from the things that bind us or limit our vision. At the end of the service, parishioners who had not had the opportunity to pray over quilts in honor of Junior Esse and for Albert Schroeder were invited to do so. Cards for the Butler’s grandbaby and the Bush’s anniversary were also available for wellwishes and prayers. The service was followed by a time of greeting and fellowship. St. Paul’s Lutheran Church news Contributed By: Joni Huwe “Rise Up and Be Set Free From Your Bondage” On the 13th Sunday after Pentecost, Pastor David Collins presented the message based on the Gospel taken from the 13th Chapter of Luke verses 10 – 17. Jesus healed a woman on the Sabbath, offering her a new beginning for her life. When challenged by the leader of the synagogue as to his work on the Sabbath, Jesus responds by explaining that “Sabbath work” includes setting people free from bondage. We as Christians need to consider what keeps us bound and unable to stand up straight. We also need to help enable oth- ers to be released from what keeps them bound. We must call upon God to give us the strength of mind and body to rise up and follow his word. The scriptures read by Randy Witte were taken from Isaiah Chapter 58, the 103rd Psalm, and the 12th Chapter of Hebrews. Dorothy Gross served as organist and filled our Church with the beautiful music of our Lord. Andrew Collins served as acolyte. Ushers were Helen Grimm, Robert Jonas and Paul Pfeifer. Flowers were provided by Helen Grimm and family in honor of all their loved ones. May God extend his Blessing on all who serve our country in the armed forces. “Hugs from Home” boxes are being assembled for those from our community serving overseas. Please see the list in the fellowship hall for suitable items to fill these boxes. Our Prayers go to all who are ill, in nursing homes, or shut-in. Prayers also go out to the family and friends of Dawn Polasek, and the family and friends of Jason White. The congregation would like to express their thanks to Helen Grimm, Meredean Shockome, and Lisa Collins for their hard work on the flowerbed landscaping and beautiful new plants. Mark your calendars and make plans to attend St. Paul’s annual Bazaar to be held on November, 6, 2010. A warm welcome to our visitors, this is our Father’s house and all are welcome.
