A Karnes County deputy has resigned amid
allegations that he made a false report related to an incident where he claimed to have
been run down while making a traffic stop.
Karnes County Sheriff David Jalufka said
that he had reason to believe that Deputy Ruben Leal was not being truthful in regards to
his account about what happened on Jan. 29,
at around 2 a.m. It was at that time that Leal
reported stopping a vehicle about 1.5 miles
north of Helena on Highway 80.
The deputy said he noticed an unusual number of passengers in the vehicle and
drew his weapon as he approached it because there was a paper license tag on the vehicle and he was unable to verify the license
tag on the radio. Leal reported that he heard
a vehicle approaching from behind him and
when he turned around to look; the vehicle
sideswiped him and knocked him off into the
ditch at the side of the road.
At the time, Jalufka said his deputy did not
have any feeling in his right side after the accident.
Karnes City police officer Jeremiah Gatica,
who was responding to the scene where the
deputy was injured, was also involved in an
accident. The officer lost control of his unit in
front of Karnes City High School crashing into a telephone pole. The officer sustained serious injuries to his face.
Both officers were airlifted via helicopter
to University Hospital with injuries that were

Bee County man sentenced
for drunk driving crimes
Omero Lugo, responsible for death, injuries to
Falls City students will serve a minimum of 8.5 years
By Joe Baker
On Monday, April 5, District
Judge Stella Saxon sentenced Bee
County resident Omero Lugo to 17
years in state prison for the crimes
of intoxication manslaughter and
intoxication assault related to a
collision that killed a Falls City
student and injured two other students more than a year ago.
Joey Lang, a 17-year-old Falls
City High School senior was killed
in the collision on Feb. 13, 2009.
Chasity Stone and Dillyn Lewis, passengers in Lang’s vehicle,
sustained serious injuries in the
crash.
Lugo was driving the wrong
way in the northbound lanes
of Highway 181 about one mile
north of Poth, and was intoxicated at the time of the crash which
led to criminal charges being filed
against him in Wilson County.
According to Wilson County Assistant District Attorney Audrey
Louis, who worked on the prosecution of the case, Lugo plead
guilty in January “open to the
court for punishment,” pleading
no contest to all three charges.
Count one was intoxication
manslaughter related to the death
of Joey Lang. Counts two and
three were intoxication assault
charges related to the injuries of
Stone and Lewis.
There was no plea agreement;
he simply went to the court for
punishment.
Louis said there were numerous witnesses that appeared during the three-hour-long sentencing hearing.
“Judge Saxon sentenced him
to 17 years on count one, being
the intoxication manslaughter.
This is a second degree felony so
it’s anywhere from two to twenty
years,” Louis said. “We were asking
for 20 years. We were asking for the
maximum.”
Louis said the prosecution also
asked for the maximum penalty
for the other charges which were
3rd degree felony charges punishable by two to ten years. Saxon sentenced him to ten years on
these charges.
“He didn’t argue for probation,”
Louis said. “He knew it may not
be appropriate considering the
circumstances. He was asking for
leniency.”
The sentences will be served
concurrently. Louis said that the

The show will open on Saturday, April 17,
from 5-7 p.m. and there will be a “gallery talk”
with the artist at 6 p.m.
The public is invited to attend the event
at the gallery located at 122 Second Street in
Kenedy.
“We invite the public to come enjoy the
breathtakingly beautiful works and speak
with the artist about his passion for painting,” said Gallery owner Saundra QueenSchultz.
“Mr. Dunn has been an oil painter since

Commissioner
Hummel told The Karnes County Times on Tuesday, April 6,
that he and his nephew were
acting to defend themselves
after being attacked by Craig
Hummel.
The commissioner said the
conflict came about as part of
a dispute over ownership of
the property.
“Craig doesn’t own anything, but he told us many
times that he owns the whole
thing and that he doesn’t
want anyone out there,” Carl
Hummel said.
The commissioner said he
was on the property checking
cattle and horses and was vis-

iting some other family who
were on the property. He and
his nephew looked out the
window and it appeared to
them that Craig Hummel was
having a fight with his girlfriend, Karen Hale.
According to Carl Hummel,
a vehicle blocked the way of
him and his nephew as they
were trying to leave and as
they were closing a gate, Craig
Hummel approached and assaulted him and his nephew.
Carl Hummel said that at that
point, his nephew and Craig
both called 911 as did Karen
Hale. Carl Hummel said that
Craig, while on the 911 phone
call, was pretending to be under attack for the benefit of
the 911 recording.
Carl Hummel said his
brother Craig has a history of
scrapes with the law and various conflicts with different
people.
“I remember I got subpoenaed and I had to go testify,
unfortunately, against him, as
to how violent he was,” Carl
Hummel said, indicating that
his brother may hold a grudge
against him because of that.
The commissioner said he
has hired an attorney and
plans to plead not guilty. He
said it was absolutely a case
of self defense on his part and
the part of his nephew.
“I never hit him with my
fists and every time he would
grab me, I would just spin
around and try to get away,”
Carl Hummel said. “Obviously, it looks bad, when the deputies are called.”
The Karnes County Times
has tried to contact Craig
Hummel, Christian Hummel
and Karen Hale for comment,
but has not yet been able to
reach any of them.

“I feel this award highlights
the efforts by our entire faculty and staff here at Runge Elementary,” Elementary Principal Debbie Witte said. “I
have never gotten this award
before, and I know it is a big
deal. I am very proud.”
The award does not come
with extra funds but part of
the criteria for receiving the
award is to adequately use Title 1 Part A funding given by
the federal government.
“The criteria include many
parts,” Ewing said. “Along
with using funds sufficiently, a campus must be considered Title 1 for three years
and have at least 40 percent of
its families ranked as low income.”
Runge Elementary was a
Recognized campus in 2007
and 2008, and it was an Exemplary campus in 2009, resulting in the award. It is to
recognize campuses for their
progress.
“I feel this award is for recognition of the teamwork exhibited by the entire staff—
from the teachers, all the way
down to the aids,” said Witte,
who is in her second year as
principal at the elementary
by herself. “It is a true representation of the enthusiasm
this campus has to reach its
goals. The award is for giving
every student the opportunity to receive a quality education, and that is exactly what
we are doing.”

markedly to those of the turfgrasses they may be associated with in a lawn or sports
field. Consequently, weeds
detract from the uniformity
of a turf and add to its maintenance requirements.
The origins of weeds are as
varied as those of our turfgrasses. Most are introduced
species from Asia and Europe that were inadvertently brought to this country.
Many were unintentional
stowaways in animal fodder or ship ballasts, or simply contaminants in seed or
food supplies brought to this
country.
Unsightly Weeds in Turf
In lawns and sports fields,
weeds are often the result of
poor quality turf, rather than
the cause of poor turf. The aggressive nature of weeds and
their prolific reproductive capacity enable them to invade
thin, weak turf areas. Cultural practices should always be
viewed as the first step to effective weed control. Always
determine why weeds established a foothold and correct
those deficiencies. If the basic problem is not corrected, weeds will continue to occur. An effective weed-control
program also requires identification of the undesirable
species as to its classification
as a grassy weed, a broadleaf
weed, an annual, or a perennial. Most turf weeds belong
to two principal categories grasses and broadleaf plants.
Chemical controls for these
two categories of plants frequently differ.
Grassy weeds have jointed,
hollow stems; leaf blades have
veins parallel to leaf margins,
and are several times longer
than they are wide; roots are
fibrous and multi-branching; and flowers are usually
inconspicuous. In contrast,
broadleaved plants often
have showy flowers; leaves
have a network of veins at diverse angles to one another; stems are often pithy; and
a taproot is usually present.
Another group of turf weeds,
sedges, have grasslike characteristics, but require a different group of chemicals for
control. Sedges are characterized by three-sided stems (triangular cross-section) which
bear leaves in three directions
(in contrast to the two-ranked
arrangement of grass leaves).
Weeds can be further
grouped according to their
life span - annual or perennial. From the standpoint of
chemical control, the grouping is most important, because preemergent herbicides are only effective for
control of annual weeds. Annual weeds germinate from
seed each year, mature in one
growing season, and die in
less than 12 months. Crabgrass and henbit are examples of annual weeds - crabgrass being a summer annual
and henbit being a winter annual. Preemergent herbicides
must be applied according to
the expected date of emergence for each targeted species.
Perennial weeds live more
than one year, and recover or
regrow from dormant stolons,
rhizomes, or tubers as well as
from seed. Control of perennial weeds requires a postemergent herbicide during its
season of active growth.
Effective chemical weed
control requires identification of the weeds as to their
classification (grass, broadleaf, sedge, etc.), life span (annual or perennial), and season of active growth (cool
season or warm season). Effective chemical control also requires accurate timing
of applications, proper rate of
application, and uniformity
of application. Always follow
label directions for a product,
and observe all warnings and
precautions relative to safety
of the application. Herbicide
labels should be carefully reviewed for additional details
on specific uses of each product, soil and sunny locations.

Opinion
The Times is a great newspaper
Editor:
Thank you, Joe and your
wife Pam for your attendance
at the Karnes City Chamber of
Commerce Banquet.
Your pictures, story, and vid-
eo captured the evening perfectly.
Most of all, I thank you for
your friendship, and your great
newspaper, The Karnes County Times.
You and your staff do a great
job.
We are very fortunate to
have you and your family in

this gentleman and complement him for his work on The
Countywide.
One of the things I appreciated about Mr. Baker was
that he reported the truth
even if the subject happen to
be about an elected official or
someone “important.” Many
times in small towns, things
like that are swept under the
rug, more or less. I believe
voters have the right to know
what kind of examples officials and leaders will be for
our community. I thought we
were really fortunate to have
an editor with this kind of integrity.
You may not have always
agreed with him, but that
does not mean that he did
not provide a valuable service to this community. I really have trouble understanding how you could have sold
him out like that. I feel that I
can not support this newspaper any longer and will not be
renewing my subscription.

Newspaper won’t publish all letters
In February I emailed
the following letter to The
Countywide newspaper. The
letter was never printed. According to my computer records, the letter went out. I
continued to receive that
newspaper even though my
subscription had run out in
January. In March I received
a post card reminding me that
my subscription needed to be
renewed. This time I called
them, mentioned I had sent a
letter and that I did not plan
to renew. I currently subscribe to The Karnes County
Times.
It’s interesting, but I am still
receiving The Countywide.
It’s a good paper and the new
staff are doing a good job, but
I just have a problem with
the way the owner runs his
business. I just thought your
readers should know that
when The Countywide says
they have a certain number
of newspapers in circulation,
some of those papers may be
going out to people who didn’t
necessarily request them.

The consequences
of drunk driving
Joe
Baker
The consequences of drunk driving
On Monday a Bee County man was sent
to prison for charges related to an accident
that took the life of a Falls City student and
injured two other students.
It was more than a year ago when the accident happened one mile north of Poth, although I’m not sure it can really be called an
“accident.”
Omero Lugo intentionally got behind the
wheel and was intoxicated to the point that
he was unaware he was driving the wrong
way in the northbound lanes of Highway
181.
It was no accident. It was intentional. Lugo chose to get behind the wheel and drive
that evening when he knew he was in no
condition to operate a motor vehicle.
It’s hard to imagine the loss of the Lang
family and all of those who knew and loved
Joey Lang, a bright, talented, funny young
man with unlimited potential.
It was a devastating tragedy for the Falls
City community and beyond for everyone
who knew and cared about this young man
and his family. It was a tragedy that was
made even worse by the fact that it was so
avoidable. If Lugo had not made the awful
choice to get behind the wheel that night,
Joey Lang would still be with us and the other students would not have had to suffer the
injuries they did that night.
No punishment of Lugo will make right
the wrong that was done that night, but I
hope that this harsh prison sentence will
send a message to everyone about the horrifying consequences of drunk driving.
It is one of the worst problems we face,
especially in rural parts of Texas such as
ours.
Without options such as public transpor-
tation or taxis, people here often take unnecessary risks driving themselves home
after having too much to drink and this is
absolutely unacceptable.
It is time for everyone who has done this
to wake up – to grow up – to sober up to the
realization of what might happen when you
get behind the wheel after having too much
to drink.
Lugo is just 27 years old.
He will have to spend years in prison but
after that, he will have to spend the rest of
his lifetime thinking about what happened
that night and the fact that a family and
community lost a bright shining star because of his reckless choice.
I see people driving drunk all the time in
this area and it is upsetting, especially when
I think about what happened on that highway north of Poth.
I have seen swerving vehicles drive past
police vehicles and I have seen the police do
nothing about it – sometimes they just let
them continue on their way.
How badly does a car or pickup need to
swerve before the police will make the effort
to pull them over?
Enforcement of the law, or lack thereof, is
part of the problem, but the biggest part of
the problem is a local culture that looks the
other way or disregards the danger of someone getting behind the wheel when under
the influence.
It’s way past time that we all cease to tolerate this behavior.
This will only stop when each of us do
whatever we can to prevent people from
driving drunk: take the keys away from a
friend whose had too much to drink, report
drunk drivers when we see them swerving
down the road, be a designated driver when
going out with friends.
This problem will only get better if everyone stands up and lets everyone else know
that drunk driving will no longer be tolerated.

The great turtle rescue
Pamela
Baker
On Monday, I was twice accused of committing a turtle murder.
I was instantly offended. I am not that
cruel, even though I have spoken of turtle
soup a few times.
Readers of my column will know that I
am not especially fond of our newest member of the family, Shelley the turtle.
We acquired Shelley several months ago
in an effort to replace a wild turtle that we
adopted and treated like family, only to
have her run away in the middle of summer.
Shelley is a red eared slider, who lives in
a 100 gallon feeding trough outside in the
back yard. The feeding trough has a heater, filter, and turtle “docking area” where the
turtle can climb up and “bask” in the sun.
However, I have never, ever seen this turtle bask. Not once. Every time I walk by her,
she is hiding in the water, underneath the
docking station, which my eldest calls, “Turtle Island.”
The day after Easter, I went outside to
empty the children’s shoes from the sand
they collected at pre-school. While emptying the shoes, I looked over at the turtle’s
tank. I didn’t see her hiding under the glass
dock.
I went over and peered into the water,
thinking she was hiding somewhere else.
No turtle.
My father-in-law came outside at that
time, and I told him that the turtle was
missing. My eldest daughter also came out,
concerned at the development. I called
my husband and told him that Shelley was
missing.
My father-in-law, eldest daughter, and
husband started a full scale search of the
yard and surrounding area. We thought that
either an animal had gotten a hold of her,
which was unlikely in the fenced in yard, or
she had climbed up on to the docking station (which I have never seen her climb on),
and somehow managed to lift herself over
the edge of the tank and escape.
I saw what I thought might be little turtle tracks, but I have no expertise in this area and gave up quickly.
The others didn’t give up, however. My
eldest daughter went and got turtle food
to try to entice the turtle back home. They
called out her name. Does a turtle even
know what its name is?
During this, my husband came in the
house, and accused me of purposely doing
something to the turtle, not once, but twice.
Of course I didn’t do anything to the turtle.
My goal is to have as little to do with the turtle as possible. I don’t have time to cook a
meal as complicated as turtle soup.
And so when they were about to give up
hope, my father-in-law noticed that a few
stray cats had started paying attention to
something under the house.
The only one thin enough and adventurous to get under there, my father-in-law followed the cats to find poor Shelley, with
all limbs and head tucked inside her shell,
huddled down in the dirt. The cats were
pawing at the shell, trying to figure out what
kind of creature they had found.
My father-in-law rescued the turtle, and
brought her back to her home. The grateful turtle is now back hiding under the turtle
dock where she belongs.
I still think my husband suspects me
though, just a little.
You make a difference
Joe
Brubaker
Folks I do not care what age you are; YOU
MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
From the day we were born we made a difference in the lives of those around us.
We continue to make a difference the rest
of our lives. Some of our differences are positive and some are negative. All of us influence others both ways. Hopefully our positive influences far out number our negative
ones.
I am writing this column because I hear
people say things like, I can’t do anything, I
have no special talents, and I am just a nobody. Not true folks! We are important to
others even though sometimes we feel otherwise.
Just the opposite of these inferior feelings
are the feelings of being superior to others.
This attitude is dangerous!
So perhaps a better path to take is the middle one. Don’t go through life brow beating ourselves or thinking more highly of ourselves than we ought to think!
I Seem to remember reading somewhere
that the meek shall inherit the earth.
Now folks being meek does not
mean we feel worthless! It means
we are to be gentle and humble!
So let us hold our heads high but don’t stick
our noses up in the air!

Men and women from
Karnes and the surrounding
counties are graciously invited to attend an interdenominational Christian meeting
hosted by the Karnes County Neighborhood Lighthouse
Aglow.
Our guest speaker will be
Pastor Henry Adams, Jr., Senior Pastor and Founder of
Believer’s Christian Center,
Inc. Pastor Adams was born
in 1947 and preached his first
sermon at age 14 in Oakland,
Texas. In 1974 he and family
moved to California. While he
was an active Elder and Evangelist at Los Angeles, God
spoke to him to move back to
Texas and start a ministry. In
March 1990, Believer’s Christian Center, Inc. was founded
and established. This ministry has grown from one local
church to five. He teaches the
word of God with miracles,
signs and wonders following.
His heart is reaching God’s
people and training them to
spread the word of God.
Our meeting will be held at
the Kenedy Civic Center located off Main Street in Kenedy. It will be on Saturday,

Eating Up
By Amelia Simmons
Potluck Succotash Casserole
The potluck supper is a great idea and
a great tradition in Texas. No one cook is
saddled with all the cooking and friends
can gather informally to sample the best
of home cooked fare. Co-ordination is
absolutely necessary unless you want to
have a dozen desserts and no casseroles
on the table. You can take planning a stage
further by having a themed party: a night
in Old Mexico or a Vegetarian Supper or a
Seasonal Supper where only local foods are
served.
If you go this route you hearken back
to the First Thanksgiving which was the
potluck to end all. It was surely a sight
with the Indian’s “furkee” or turkey and
the colonists’ contribution of frumenty
or porridge that was a mixture of maize
and corn. Sometimes – legend has it –
lima beans were added to the succotash
casserole, although food historians now
argue that was impossible, because lima
beans couldn’t grow in the Plymouth
climate.
The scalloped succotash casserole recipe
given below can be prepared with fresh or
canned vegetables. I’ve added chopped
cilantro for garnish. The colonists wouldn’t
recognize it.
2 17 ounce cans whole kernel corn
1 16-ounce can lima beans
1 13 ounce can evaporated milk
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
2 beaten eggs
1 medium onion finely chopped
1 small red pepper finely chopped
2 cups crushed saltine crackers
2 tablespoons melted butter
½ tsp. each salt and pepper
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
Drain corn. Add water to corn liquid to
make ¾ cup. Combine the liquid, corn, limas,
milk, cheese and beaten eggs. Sauté the onion
and pepper in 1 tablespoon butter and add to
the mixture with 1 ½ cups crackers. Season
well. Turn into a casserole. Bake at 350 for
30 minutes. Pour the remaining butter over
the remaining crackers and sprinkle over
the top of the casserole. Bake, uncovered for
35 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes, then
sprinkle with chopped cilantro and serve.

Church
Kenedy First Baptist Church news
“Jesus Triumph of the
Empty Tomb”
Easter Sunday marks our
deadline of Texas Hope 2010
and the distribution of CD’s
with the Gospel of John to every home statewide. We rejoice many heard the Good
News and responded in faith
to being born again.
For his sermon series concerning Jesus temptations,
teachings, timing, trials and
testing during Passion Week,
today Pastor John Wheat discussed Jesus triumph of the
empty tomb. Using George
Barna’s statistics, Pastor discussed how 7 out of 10 think
Easter is something spiritual
but of this only 47% said anything about His resurrection.
As Jesus triumphed over
the empty tomb, He first
spent time in the Garden
where He cried in anguish
three times: “if it be possible
let the cup pass from Me,” but
then prayed: “not My will but
yours be done.”
Next Jesus spent time on
the cross which was the most
humiliating, painful and agonizing death anyone could
undergo. He endured beatings and spikes in His hands
and feet as He hung on the
cross for 7 hours of pure agony until He no longer had
the energy to push Himself
up from the crossbar. Why the
cross? Because there was a
penalty for our sins and Jesus
paid for it through His death.
When Jesus said: “It is finished,” He was saying He paid
our sin debt in full.
Luke 24:1-8 was the sermon text for today which tells
of Jesus resurrection from the
dead. Jesus came back to live
fully both physically and spiritually. He went to the tomb at
His death by way of the garden as He prayed “Your will
be done” and through His
submission and obedience
we can be transformed in doing likewise.
Where do you spend time?
In the garden where you
question God claiming your
will over His? Or do you go to
the tomb where you can be
transformed? Jesus didn’t stay
on the cross but went to the
tomb and got transformed.
We all need tomb time in order to be transformed.
Galatians 2:20 states: “I
have been crucified with
Christ; it is now no longer I
that live but Christ lives in me
and the life I live in the faith
is by the Son of God who died
and gave Himself up for me.”
Our deepest sympathies go to the families of Harvey Mohr, and Bill Bingham.

That at the name of Jesus

And every tongue confess

- Philippians 2:5-11 NIV
The Philippian hymn serves
as a reminder to the church in
the twenty-first century just
as it was a reminder to the
church in the first century of
the meaning of the resurrection.
How has the fact that Jesus was raised from the dead
changed you? Yes, eternal life
is a glorious promise, the ultimate promise in fact. But we
are talking about more. How
has the resurrection of Jesus
Christ from the dead created
a new normal in our everyday
lives?
Paul tells us not to look to
our own interests but to those
of others. He tells us that our
attitude should be the same
as the attitude of Jesus. Read
the words to the Philippian
hymn again.
Today the world stands in
awe of the Resurrection of
Jesus Christ from the Dead.
People take off work, but it
is more than a vacation day.
Families get together, but it is
more than a reunion.
How has the resurrection
of Jesus Christ from the Dead
changed you?
Remember our faith is
about the fact that the tomb
is empty. Jesus Christ was
more than just some radical charismatic political leader. As Peter told the crowd in
Acts 2:36, “Therefore Let All
Israel Be Assured of This: God
Has Made This Jesus, Whom
You Crucified, Both Lord and
Christ!”
Consider Jesus Christ’s
Atoning Death. Think of the
Cross which purchased my
pardon and yours. Read and
reread the Philippian hymn.
How has the risen Christ
changed you?

The stone rolled open and
the guards fell as dead men.
Many religious guards today
have fallen as dead men and
given themselves over to the
material things and pleasures
of this world.
In Luke 24:2 some servant
minded women on their way
to give Jesus a proper burial
found the stone rolled away
and Jesus was not there. Satan
couldn’t buy Him, sin couldn’t
bind Him and the grave
couldn’t hold Him. Why? In
Verse 6 Scripture declares
that He is risen. Christians
need to roll away the stone
over our hearts that hardens
our hearts and holds us captive from serving our Lord .
In verse 9 These women
were excited, enthused and
overcome with joy and they
went to and told the disciples that Jesus was living they
did not believe them because
it all seemed to them as nonsense. Christians today who
see other things more important than serving the Lord see
the joy of those who serve as
nonsense. Thank God for Peter who went out and ran to
the tomb to see if this story was true. What we need in
our churches today are more
people who are like Peter. He
overcame his doubts by placing faith and trust in Jesus. We
should all run to Christ just as
Peter did.
Do something extra at
Christmas and Easter, for
someone who has a need. Tell
someone about Jesus. Feed
the hungry, visit someone in
a nursing home. Spend just
a little time with someone in
need and you will find what
Peter found. True life in the
life of a Christian.
In our church at Choate we
are looking for servant minded people to come and help
us grow in Christ.
You are invited to come to
Choate Baptist Church. Sunday school starts at 9:45am
and the worship service starts
at 11:00am. Sunday nights
at 7:00pm and Wednesday
nights at 7:00pm.

Members of Good Shepherd Lutheran observed
Maundy Thursday by partaking of a Passover Seder Meal

First Presbyterian Church news
Upon entering the sanctuary of the First Presbyterian
Church, the congregation was
greeted with Easter lilies as a
reminder of the significance
of the day.
Easter Sunday at First Presbyterian Church was even
more special than usual because of the occasion of the
baptism of Katherine Alicia
Perez, the three month old
granddaughter of member
Dianne Espinoza and niece of
members Mike & Cindy Guerrero. It was a joyous and reverent occasion for all in attendance – approximately 45
individuals.
Katherine Alicia Perez’s
baptism was beautiful. She is
the proud daughter of Ruben
and Stacey Perez. She never
cried, then Chuck walked her
down the aisle, after he baptized her, showing her to everyone and she just gurgled
and stared. She wore a beautiful white gown with lacing
at the top. Her grandparents,
Jesse and Alice Perez, and uncles all came, as well as Mimi
Dianne and Uncle Todd, not
to mention the Guerrero Four,
and her Aunt Sarah and cousin Jana. Stacey’s best friend,
Lupita,
from Austin also
came down. After church, the
family celebrated at the Guerrero’s house in Helena, where
“Uncle Mike” had prepared
fajitas and the works for all
the family and friends. Ushers
were Trip Ruckman and Barbara Barnett. Beautiful Easter Lilies were provided by the

lucky this year to have the Easter Bunny stop by and visit with
the kids! The church had its biggest prize give-away - about

grass stop them from having fun! They moved their Hunt inside
the Education Building. Church members expressed appreciation for the generosity of parishioners who donated candy,
time & energy towards this fun event for the youth.
Women of the Church; and
Stella Saxon played the piano.
Pastor Chuck Gibbs used
the Presbyterian Church’s
long-form Baptism service for
Katherine, which served to remind all present of the significance of baptism in the life of
a child and family, as well as
the significance in the lives of
all Christians.
In the Presbyterian Church,
baptism is the sign and seal of
incorporation into Christ. Jesus through his own baptism
identified himself with sinners in order to fulfill all righteousness. Jesus in his own
baptism was attested Son by
the Father and was anointed with the Holy Spirit to undertake the way of the servant
manifested in his sufferings,
death, and resurrection. Jesus
the risen Lord assured his followers of his continuing presence and power and commissioned them to: “Go therefore
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey
everything that I have commanded you. And remember,
I am with you always to the
end of the age.”
In Baptism we participate
in Jesus’ death and resurrection. In Baptism we die to
what separates us from God
and are raised to newness of
life in Christ. Baptism points
us back to the grace of God
expressed in Jesus Christ,
who died for us and who was
raised for us. Baptism points
us forward to that same Christ
who will fulfill God’s purpose
in God’s promised future.
In Baptism, the Holy Spirit
binds the Church in covenant
to its Creator and Lord. The
water of Baptism symbolizes the waters of Creation, of
the Flood, and of the Exodus
from Egypt. Thus, the water of Baptism links us to the
goodness of God’s creation
and to the grace of God’s covenants with Noah and Israel.
Prophets of Israel, amidst the
failure of their own genera-
tion to honor God’s covenant,
called for justice to roll down
like waters and righteousness
like an everflowing stream.
They envisioned a fresh expression of God’s grace and
of creation’s goodness – a
new covenant accompanied
by the sprinkling of cleansing
water. In his ministry, Jesus
offered the gift of living water.
So, Baptism is the sign and
seal of God’s grace and covenant in Christ.
Baptism is the bond of unity with Christ and unites the
people of God with each other with no barriers of race,
gender, status or age. All barriers are transcended.
Believers and their children
are included in God’s covenant love. A child of believers, such as Katherine Alicia
Perez, is to be baptized without undue delay. Baptism
of the child presented by its
family or baptism of those
professing their faith is one
and the same Sacrament. The
baptism of a child witnesses to the truth that God’s love
claims people before they are
even able to respond in faith.
With baptism, parents,
grandparents and the congregation accept responsibility for nurturing the child and
guiding the child until the
child is ready to make a personal profession of faith and
assume the responsibility of
active church membership.
The family and congregation of First Presbyterian
Church of Karnes City accepted, joyfully and with knowledge of the seriousness of the
act, the responsibility to nurture and guide Katherine Alicia Perez from this day of her
baptism forward.

Lions go 1-1 on the week
The Karnes County Times
Karnes County’s only locally owned newspaper
The Kenedy Lions went to
2 – 2 in district play this week
as they would beat the Nixon-Smiley Mustangs 12-1 on
Tuesday and drop a tie game
to the Stockdale Brahmas
3-1 in Stockdale. In the Nixon game at home Rhett Bell
would go the distance on the
mound pitching giving up 5
hits and 1 run in the fifth. The
Lions wouldn’t have to bat in
the bottom of the fifth as they
would score 2, 2, 3, and 5 in
their innings at the plate. The
Lions would only have 6 hits
themselves but would take
advantage of 8 walks and 5
errors. Rolie Zepeda would
go 2 for 3, Rhett Bell would
go 1 for 1, Jonathon Hackney
would go 1 for 2, Tristan Mejia would go 1 for 3, and Lane
Gaskamp would go 1 for 2
rounding out the hitting for
the Lions.
On Thursday the Lions
would travel to Stockdale and
play a good game all around
as they would face the Stockdale ace Colton West. The Lions would score in the first
inning as Jake Havron would
double to left center move to
third on a pass ball and score
on a wild pitch. Stockdale
would tie it in the bottom of
the second and it would stay
that way until the fourth inning when it looked as if the
clean up hitter would hit one
out on starter Rolie Zepeda
but the hitter wouldn’t touch
home plate and the dough
out did a great job recognizing it and Zepeda would appeal it on the next pitch to record the out and get out of
the inning. The Lions would
get runners on in every inning except the fifth and seventh. They would get runners in scoring position in
the third, fourth, and sixth
but would be unable to move
them in. In the bottom of the
sixth Zepeda would get the
first out of the inning but
then give up a hit, hit a batter
and then give up two more
singles before giving way to
Isaac Cruz who would record the final two batters but
the damage would be done
as the Brahmas would lead
3-1. Zepeda pitched a great
game only giving up one
earned run. Jake Havron and
Tristan Mejia would lead the
Lions at the plate both going
2 for 3. Bryan Alaniz and Jonathon Hackney would both
go 1 for 3 and round out the
hitting for the Lions as they
went 6 for 27 at the plate. After this week of play the Lions
are tied for third place with
Karnes City at 2 -2 and play
at Poth on Friday night. Navarro leads the district at 4-0
and Stockdale is 3-1.
Leopards steal two wins
By Jessie Hoffman
The Kenedy Leopards
grabbed two district wins last
week. They defeated the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs
12-10 and the Stockdale Lady
Brahmas 3-0.
Battling against the Nixon-Smiley Lady Mustangs,
the Leopards took three trips
all the way around the bases. In the third inning, senior
Jessie Hoffman took her trip
around on an error and both
senior Megan Edwards and
sophomore Desiree Guerra hit homeruns in the top of
the sixth.
In the top of the sixth,
sophomore Megan Villanueva also rounded first for a
double and sophomore Corina Barrientez sent the ball to
center field earning a single.
Scoring for the Leopards
were Hoffman with three, Edwards and Villanueva (Courtesy Runner – Lillie Vickery)
each with two, and with onea-piece were Barrientez, Desiree Guerra, Ashley Leal,
Jackie Hartsfield, and Anissa
De la Garza.
Villanueva pitched for
five strike outs and fielded
for six outs. To end the game,
Villanueva fielded a line
drive hit that knocked her off
the mound and she made the
throw from the ground while
still catching the runner at
first. Edwards caught two
line drives hit to short stop.
Hartsfield grabbed a pop fly
hit to second and Lauren
Hernandez gave it her all to
catch a fly on the run in center field.
Coach Anna Martin is very
proud of the heart the team
played with against Nixon.
She said, “I was extremely proud of the Leopards for
playing their game for the
full seven innings. The game
was close most of the way
but the girls held up with a
solid defense, smart hitting,
and aggressive base running.
The Leopards never gave up
and played without the starting and back-up pitcher.”
One thing that is different about the Leopards is
their sense of teamwork and
their attitude towards helping each other to do what
is best for the team. Martin
said, “Villanueva stepped up

job. Barrientez also stepped
up and came in to play first
base for Guerra who was
struggling. Every player is
going to struggle at some
time or another but it’s great
to have others that are willing to help their teammates
and to be able to come in and
get the job done. With Villanueva pitching, Hernandez
took on center field and did
a great job. We had to move
players around, but the girls
stepped up and played every
position well.”
In their next challenge,
the Leopards fought hard
against the Stockdale Lady
Brahmas. Kenedy prevented
Stockdale from scoring for all
seven innings.
Edwards, Hoffman, and
Hartsfield each tallied up a
run for the Leopards.
Hartsfield was an all
around player for the Leopards contributing to eight defensive outs including a double play. In the batter’s box,
Hartsfield stepped up hitting a double in the second
inning bringing in Hoffman
from first base.
Hoffman, the Leopards
catcher, didn’t allow for any
pass balls with runners on
third. She held three runners
on base in scoring position.
Pitching for the Leopards
was freshman Saren Sutton
who pitched for three strikeouts and fielded for three
outs.
Earning two wins puts the
Leopards at a 2-3 district record going into the second
round. Kenedy will face the

The Smart Choices II
grant was deemed a success
at the March 8 school board
meeting.
The Smart Choices I grant
was adopted in 2002, and it was
continued as Smart Choices II
in 2005.
The grant set out with
four goals: increase student’s
perception of harm, reduce
alcohol abuse, reduce binge
drinking, and improve school
climate.
According
to
data
displayed via PowerPoint by
Dr. Kyle Barrington at the
meeting, all objectives were
met.
“We were able to increase
perception of harm concerning
substance abuse, particularly
alcohol,” he said, adding that

level.”
Goal four of improving
school climate was a new
initiative under the Smart
Choices II grant. The focus
was on those students who
were afraid that another student
would hurt them in school.
“Most of this effort was
dedicated at the middle school,
junior high, level,” he said.
“And, as you can tell that is
where we had the greatest
impact.”
Barrington explained the
use of the compound annual
growth rate statistic. That
statistic was used to judge the
effectiveness of the grant.
“We
know
that
unemployment rates have
been going up, but one
of the statistics you keep
hearing about is the fact that
unemployment rates are not
increasing as much as they
did before,” he said. “If we
can reduce the rate of increase
around substance abuse, then
we know that less kids are
using on a daily average.”
He added that the statistics
showed almost an 80 percent
reduction in the amount of
fear related to the dangers of
alcohol students loose each
year.
“Also, as student get older
they tend to drink more and
more often,” Barrington said.
“In 2004 rate was increasing
about 51 percent between
grade levels, but 2010 it was
only increasing at about 35
percent.”
The presentation also
included that heavy drinking,
or drinking to get drunk, was
decreased by almost 45 percent
and a 63 percent reduction
in the increase of underage
drinking and driving occurred
also.
“If you are going to
address underage drinking, (a
grant such as this) is the way
to do it—this has a measurable
and appreciable impact on
student population,” he said.
“There are opportunities out
there for these kids, and if they
slip off on to the wrong path,
that opportunity can be gone
really quick.”
