You have to take your hat off to
Apple - not because they make
extremely sexy kit - but because
they manage to launch products
and somehow convince the
press that its something
completely new.
Last month there was a huge
amount of coverage for the
launch of iPhone. The first news
story I heard about it was on
breakfast TV, where the reporter
was almost hysterical
about the fact that it
was a phone with
Internet connection,
which could play
audio files and could
take pictures as well! I’m
not wishing to dull this down, nor
seem boastful, but I’ve had a
mobile phone that does all this
for more than two years! Why is
it all of a sudden stop-press news
that Apple have made one?
I think the answer may be
found within the Apple user
community. They are certainly a
loyal bunch, and many take an
evangelical approach to
recommending Apple solutions to
others. Some go so far down
this route that it can achieve the
complete opposite and put off
non-Apple users.
I’m not suggesting that Apple
solutions are not great products.
Far from it. I really like the
concept of one-stop solution
providers. Their growing
popularity in the NLE market is
an excellent example. Having
one company to throw the thing
back at when it all goes tits-up is
the route the PC-based NLE
market should have gone down
years ago. And whilst there are
probably statistical facts that
would suggest that Macs are
more reliable than PCs on certain
applications, this is probably a
direct result of the PCs bolttogether philosophy (and the
difficulty in establishing what
component is responsible for the
The Cook
Retort
fault or
incompatibility),
rather than one
technology being considerably
better or more reliable than the
other.
Lurking in the background of
iPhone’s launch was the coming
of Apple TV - Apple’s set-top box
that provides an interface for
your iTunes library on your Mac
or PC. Connected either by cable
or wireless, essentially any media
content you have access to via
your iTunes library (music,
movies, podcasts, etc.) can be
displayed on your TV. However,
word on the street suggests that
at the heart of this Apple product
is an Intel PC - so I assume it will
suffer from the same reliability
issues that the staunch Mac
community have thrown at PCs
since the dawn of time. Perhaps
now its wrapped in a Mac shell it
will all of a sudden adopt a more
reliable persona!
So what’s next on the Apple
product roll out - the iWheel? I
can see the headlines now - “A
completely new motion concept”.
I might be cynical, but I reckon
some of the press would buy into
anything Apple wanted to launch.
I’d like to see them release some
more challenging products - such as
iFags, or iPilesCream, or
iNuclearBomb, or iCrackCocaine, or
iTax. I’m surprised Apple have not
adopted the theme tune - “Anything
you can do ‘i’ can do better!”
However, I guess we should
all take a leaf out of their book
and look at the way we brand
ourselves. It sure would be nice
if all our customers bought into
everything we ever produced and that the press were lining up
to tell everyone we have
something unique.

Exec Meeting Report
The IOV Executive held its
latest meeting alongside a
local event in Central
Birmingham on 16th January
at the Days Hotel, Poets
Corner.
The main purpose of the local
event was to find suitable
volunteers to act as Area
Representatives for the region,
which has become dormant in
the past 12-months. To this end,
and despite the poor attendance,
there were at least two members
who expressed an interest in
getting things off the ground in
what is one of the IOV’s most
highly saturated regions.
In addition to an explanation
of the purpose of the event, the
attendees were also treated to a
presentation by Kevin O’Malley of
JVC Professional on their range
of HDV cameras - including the
new 200-series 720-50/60p
cameras. Following Kevin’s
introduction, CVP brought along
the latest Apple NLE system and
explained the capabilities and
options for editing HDV in its
various formats.
Our sincere thanks go to both
JVC and CVP for their support.
The Exec Meeting
The Executive meeting dealt with
its usual packed agenda, initially
dealing with the financial matters
of the organisation and its
administration company. Suffice
to say that all is on target
according to the projections.
Having reached the end of its
period to renegotiate a renewal
of its agreement, which expires
in October this year, IOV Focus
Ltd was awarded another 5-year
term to provide the IOV with its
administrative backbone, the
publication of Focus magazine,
provision of its website and
management of the IOV
Convention. In addition, and at
no extra cost to the IOV, IOV
Focus will also administer the
sale of copyright licences on
behalf of the IOV - which has
already generated over £1,000
for IOV funds since the PPL
scheme was introduced in
October last year. The new
contract will take both parties
through to October 2012.
IOV Focus produced a
detailed proposal on how they
have contributed to the success
of the IOV in the past 5-years,
and how they intend to
contribute in the following 5years. A copy of this proposal
document is available to any
member on request (please email
exec@iov.co.uk).
Accreditation
Whilst work on the new
accreditation system is
progressing, Assessment
Administrator, Chris Waterlow,
has also started work on a video
explaining the current
Assessment Criteria. This will be
completed by the end of 2007
and will be available for
download from the IOV website.
Chris added, “Whilst the
section on the website clearly
describes the criteria for
assessment, we still have a
number of entries which are
rejected because they do not
cover all the required disciplines.
It will be much easier to
demonstrate these with video and show applicants examples of
how it should be done.”
AGM
The date for the next AGM was
fixed for Tuesday 24th April and
it will be held alongside the
Scotland South meeting in
Lanark. Members will be
informed of the full details in due
course.
Apart from dealing with the
usual AGM business, there will be
further proposed changes to the
Constitution in relation to the
requirement of all Executive
committee members to sign a
confidentiality agreement.
Copies of this document (the
final draft, which was agreed at
this meeting) and the reasoning
behind its proposed
implementation will be sent to
every member with their AGM
notice so they fully understand
the implications.
This AGM will also see the first
Executive committee elections
under the new scheme adopted at
the recent EGM. A set of
guidance notes will be sent to all
members informing them how the
elections will take place and how
nominations can be put forward.
New Executive
Chairperson
The Executive also held their
ballot for the appointment of
their Chairperson and Vice
Chairperson for the coming year.
The result of this ballot was that
at the AGM in April, Ron Lee will
occupy the Chair.
Though Chris Waterlow
received the majority vote for
the position of Vice Chairperson,
he felt that his current
commitments and workload on
the new accreditation system
precluded him from accepting
this position, so Steven Abrams
(who received the second highest
number of votes) will occupy the
position of Vice Chairperson.
Both these positions will be
reviewed on a yearly basis.
Irish Copyright
Licences
Talks have now started with
copyright licence bodies in
Ireland, in the hope that similar
agreements can be arranged to
those that exist the UK. Details
of this will be sent to members in
due course.
Next Meeting
The next IOV Executive meeting
will take place on 24th April 2007
- at a venue to be decided.
Those wishing to contact the IOV
Executive to suggest items for
the Executive meeting agendas
should email - exec@iov.co.uk no later than 14-days prior to the
meeting.

LogBuy one-year on...
It has been nearly 12-months
since the IOV first introduced
LogBuy to its list of membership
benefits - and the Executive
Committee would like to know
your experience with using this
service.
LogBuy essentially provides
members with a list of suppliers
who offer preferential terms and
offers on services and products
including healthcare policies,
banking, wine, computer
hardware and software, business
banking, fuel, airport parking,
etc. Members can take
advantage of these through a
secure link
within the
‘Members

the IOV
website.
Each month
new deals
and arrangements are notified
via postings on the IOV
Newsletter pages on the site.
If you have taken advantage
of any of these offers in the past
year we would like to hear about
your experience - good or bad.
We would also like to hear how
you believe this service can be
improved. This information will
help the Executive in its decision
about renewing the IOV’s
participation in this scheme.

Removal of
Membership
Following the hearing that took
place on 15th November, and his
failure to comply with the
Executive Committee’s conditions
of reinstatement, Robert Scarfe’s
membership of the IOV has been
terminated.
The Executive’s full
statement, and an attached
report by Revd. Phil Janvier B.A.,
M.M.Inst.V. (the Executive’s
witness to this hearing) can be
found on the posting dated 16th
November 2006 in the Business

Version 2 for V-440
Edirol’s V-440 HD mixer has
become the standard in video
mixing at many venues around
the world. Its multi-format video
mixing technology, simple ease
of use and powerful feature set
have made it a hit at concerts,
outside broadcasts, trade shows,
corporate presentations and
many other live events. The new
v2 software for the V-440 adds
an incredible 20 new features to
the unit which offer the following
enhancements:
The V-440HD is now more
flexible - 1366x768 (WXGA)
resolution is now supported in v2
as an output format enabling
high quality native support of
most mid-sized LCD panels
(1366x768 is the most common
native resolution for LCD panels
32” and smaller). PGM/PST
mode (Flip/Flop) has been added
as an operational mode and
another neat v2 feature is the
ability to choose from a variety
of colours to backlight the LED
input selectors to customise the
V-440HD’s look to your personal
preference.
For increased functionality,
several of the V-440’s menu and
Panel Preset functions have been
updated to include more flexible
IOV at Video Forum
PinP editing and extra fader
options. You can also now
instantly recall the default value
for every V-440 parameter which
is especially useful for input
parameters. Added shortcuts
now make the unit’s menu
selection easier while Panel
Presets can now be limited to
those chosen by the user for
speedier operation.
The V-440 HD now has extra
automation - with the v2
software installed, the V-440 can
now automatically disable inputs
that are inactive, avoiding
accidental selection of blank
inputs. RGB input formats
can now be automatically
detected, enabling rapid
switching of multiple
computers to one input.
Integration has now been
increased - the V-440 can
now be connected to more
external devices and controlled
remotely by Edirol’s PR series
(v1.2 software required) of video
presenters. And for more flexible
backing up, a master v2 V440HD unit can transfer mixer
setup parameters via MIDI to a
slave unit allowing for convenient
Multi-Screen setups. Setup data
can also be backed up or
transferred from or to a PC via
RS-232C (backup software will
be a free download from
www.rolandsystemsgroup.com).
The v2 EDIROL V-440 upgrade
is priced at £150 plus VAT (€220
plus VAT), which includes
transport costs (both ways,
collect and dispatch).

launches it’s very first series of
Wedding Day seminars
sponsored by the Institute of
Videography and Sony.
Wedding videos are generally
getting much better, however,
videographers still lag behind
photographers in the bookings
and fees that they command.
This session will focus on: How
to attract customers to your
business; Improving the take up
of wedding films; and Enhancing
the public image of your business
and the industry.
Delegates will take away plenty
of new ideas, new energy and
positive actions that will not only
improve personal success but
also enhance the image and
reputation of wedding films.
Tickets are free to IOV members
and £20 to non-members.
Alongside the Wedding Day
seminars, the three-day
exhibition is packed with
technology, training and advice
for everyone involved in creating
and distributing TV, video, IPTV
and mobile TV. Now in its 15th
year, this year sees over 120
exhibitors demonstrating
thousands of new products.
Video Forum also features over
140 free seminars, workshops and
masterclasses offering advice on
creating and delivering content.

great evening.
In December we celebrated the
festive season with a Christmas

Cranage Hall. The event was a

was great and the company was
extra special - particularly as we

surprise!
We then went on to assess a
wedding video that was being
submitted for actual assessment
as part of an ongoing exercise.
Everybody at the meeting
thought this was a great idea and
when we next meet we’ll take a
look at the Assessment Panel’s
comments.
I think this will be a great
learning experience for us all.
This idea was actually
suggested by the members
themselves and I have to say a
big thanks to them for taking this
step and putting themselves in
the harsh spotlight of
assessment.
We did not have a December
meeting due to various
commitments but I’m working on
the year ahead. I do hope members
took a well-earned rest over the
festive period and are now back and
ready for a busy year ahead. All
meetings will be, as usual, on the

that it was all very impressive
and we had quite a wide

your films, it was a pleasure to
watch them.
We then went on to pull a
Sony A1 apart, discussing the
good and bad
points and
giving the
members the
opportunity to
handle and understand the
benefits.
Needless to say everyone
enjoyed themselves and we all
went home with a bit more

discussing the pros and cons of

As a happy Roland user for
some 20 years now, I was
keen to get my hands on this

stereo recording technology I

SD cards come in at around £50
for a 2GB, newer types always
being more costly, but you can
get a 1GB for £13 - so it depends
on how long a recording time you
require. If you are recording in
MP3 format 320kbps, you will get
392 minutes on a 1GB card that’s enough for most sessions
(conferences). Even if you were
recording as a WAV file 24bit
48.1kHz, you get 54-mins on a
1GB card - and if you record at
CD quality 16bit 44.1kHz, you
get a full 88 minutes.
As a guide only, I have
included the above chart of
expected recording times using
different SD cards and various
format settings. Other sources
give different values for the MP3
recording times (slightly less).
Quality Control
Using new circuit technology
(IARC), the R-09 keeps crystal
clear sound without DC
interference. The LCD display
gives all the information
necessary and the menu buttons
provide access to any function
relatively easy. Not only that,
the ambience of your recording
can be changed.
Whatever format you choose
to record in, you can route the
playback through its internal
reverb processor, simulating
various spaces such as Hall,
Room and Plate. The ultimate
effect of this would be influenced
by the reflections of the room
you made the recording in.
Switches for mono/stereo
select, low-cut filter, auto gain
and gain boost are amongst the
useful and self explanatory
options available. Input gain
volume controls are on the side
of the unit so that you can
easily adjust recording levels,
and you can monitor them on
the LCD display.
16
February 2007
Input impedances for the
microphone are stated as 20k
Ohms and line input as 17k
Ohms. Along with the mini jack
input/outputs is a digital (optical)
output jack so you can stream
audio to digital equipment such
as CD/MiniDisc/DAT or digital
speakers. This jack also acts as
a headphone socket.
Ins & Outs
I don’t like the idea of mini jacks
being used for input/outputs on
any equipment. I prefer the idea
of balanced XLR’s that are not
soldered directly to the circuit
boards. Still, I guess that a
device that fits into your hand is
not going to leave enough
internal space for this type of
wiring at present - but I’m sure
that with careful handling, this
will be an invaluable tool for use
within the audio visual industry.
Having said that, I firmly
believe that the manufacturers of
audio visual gear which is clearly
aimed at professionals, should be
supplying I/O fittings which are
not soldered directly to the
circuit boards. This makes the
gear that bit more reliable - after
all, this is where most of the
wear and tear will be.
Updatable
With the old analogue hardware,
we have become used to
disappointment in that, no
sooner have we bought the ‘new’
model, we find it is now out of
date! I remember asking for
advice about my graphics card
which was 6-weeks old, only to
be told - “That’s an old one.”
With the R-09 you can get latest
updates for the recorder so that
it keeps up with developments in
memory cards. Just go to the
Roland site and download the
updates. SDHC (high capacity)
memory cards can now be used
Focus Magazine

on the R-09 for playing and
recording. This is one such
update.
Add-on Extras
The Edirol R-09 has an optional
extra Cover & Stand Kit for £49
(some companies offer it for
£38). This provides the unit
with a stable audio recording
platform and protection from
damage. The cover has windows
so as to access the buttons. It
has a belt clip which could be a
useful thing if you were using a
fish pole mic hooked up to the
Edirol R-09.
The 1/4-inch universal sized
screw thread is used to attach it
to the tripod base - equally, you
could use it to attach to some
other grip. I’d like to see
someone develop a grip and
windshield/softie idea. This
would broaden its use, especially
in the broadcast arena.
The RRP is £299 – but some
dealers will sell it for less, so it’s
worth shopping around. This
machine is well worth looking at
and will make a great investment
for anyone within this industry.

NOTES: I've just been looking
for Owners Manuals on the
Roland site for some of my older
gear and I was impressed by the
ease of use when it comes to get
the page in the manual you
want. Roland have put a lot of
effort into this, so I thought I
would look at the Edirol site.
It really is well worth
downloading the manual so that
you have a PC version as well the

here you also get the option to

I wish I had read this before

MiniDisc Recorders
One piece of audio kit often in
my camera case is a portable
MiniDisc recorder. Now I
know that if you talk to
experienced sound engineers
and you mention the MiniDisc
recorder they get this look on
their faces that implies you
have taken leave of your
senses - but I just don’t care,
my MiniDisc recorder has
saved me embarrassment on
more than one occasion.
In Use
Typically I use the MiniDisc
recorder as a back up sound
device for live concerts, plays
and worship events.
For example, I often place
multiple microphones around the
front of the stage area I am
hoping to cover, these
microphones are then linked via
XLR cables to my small portable
Behringer Eurorack MXB1002
mixing desk. This wonderful
mixer works off mains or
batteries, has five XLR or five
Line In or Instrument inputs,
tape in and tape out (technically
it has two mono inputs and four
stereo inputs, monitor send, FX
send, phones and stereo
standard jack outputs). It also
has phantom power. It is a great
piece of kit - it is well made, as
all Behringer kit seems to be, is
rugged and it only cost £84! (if
you can still get hold of them!)
I balance the levels then
output a mono signal to my
Sennheiser radio transmitter via
its mini jack input, and radio the
signals (no messy or dangerous
cables to fall over) to my camera
body pack receiver. Then I
attach the mixer via the phones
output to my MiniDisc recorder.
When the production starts I
start it recording and forget
about it. Then if the tape jams,
battery dies or any other disaster
happens to my camera - the
MiniDisc keeps recording!
Disaster Avoided
One production springs to mind.
I use twin Canon XL1-S’s which
take mini DV tapes that last an
hour. Those of you with DVCAM
cameras can now smile smugly
as your tapes last for hours!
The production was timed at
forty five minutes, but that did
not take into consideration the
children’s little extras and the
‘Thank you’s’. So nothing new
there, you may say. I had to
change tapes very quickly, which
I did, but later when editing I
had a hole in the sound. That is
where the MiniDisc recording
came to the rescue - a quick
audio capture and a bit of image
cutting and pasting and it was all
sorted and a disaster avoided.
Pricing
MiniDisc recorders are not
expensive and they range in
price from under £100 to over
£200 for the small portable
models, although the
professional models do cost
substantially more.
It is true that MiniDisc
recorders are old technology and
that many people are now using
portable solid state recorders,
but that does not stop them

working or being a very useful
piece of kit.
Things to Look Out for
When you Buy
If you decide to buy a MiniDisc
recorder do bear in mind that
they do not always come with a
microphone and that some
models may require a preamplifier to work, hence my use
of the Behringer mixer. Some
models may not even have
microphone inputs, but you can
easily adapt a Line In input if it
has one.
Many are just digital now, but
do remember to check, especially
on the more expensive models!
Are there Any
Problems I should
Know About?

What is the problem with that
you may ask? To be honest,
nothing with the first recording,
but if you copy MiniDisc to
MiniDisc it recompresses the
signal again and each time you
do that it gets noticeably worse.
The nearest example I can
give you is the effect you get
when you copy VHS tape to VHS
tape, the more you copy the
worse it gets and eventually it
becomes unwatchable - and we
all can shudder about that. That
is why I only ever use the master
recording and I get it onto the
computer before I start playing
with it, but once there I have had
very few problems with the audio
quality. In fact, I have heard
some people argue that it is
better than that which most
cameras can produce, but I am
not yet convinced by that theory.

Amazingly, when imported into

you capture the sound at the

the results should be quite

the quality you get from a

Part 7 - The importance of websites
I kind of hinted last month
that I would be killing two
birds with one stone. The
first bird was just a
continuation of the Video
Artisan thread explaining the
importance of websites
within a video production
business and how to make
them work for you. The
second bird was a challenge
set by the IOV’s Marketing
Action Group (MAG) – which
was to provide a general
reminder and guide to
members about the benefits
of having a website and
utilising the facility on the
IOV website of members
being able to include their
website address within their
profile.
These two birds are in fact
the same animal, and whilst
there will be many reading this
month’s article who will see this
as very basic stuff, amongst
these more website-aware
people there are some who are
guilty of not using every trick
available to them. This was
proved in the final meeting of the
MAG where we studied the
current ‘Find a Videographer’
section of the IOV’s website. It
transpired that less than 50% of
qualified members had a website
or had failed to include their
website address in their profile.
Further investigation showed
that of those that did have a
website address included, a large
proportion were either of poor
design, out of date or
dysfunctional. Furthermore, a
recent poll on the IOV website
revealed that just over 20% of
videographers do not have a
business website at all.
So what does this suggest?
Probably a number of things…
20
February 2007
First thing is that there is still a
fair proportion of videographers
out there who are not yet
convinced of the importance of
having a website to promote
their business. Secondly, that
some of those that do have a
website are not using every
opportunity to point customers
towards it (despite the fact that
it’s a free form of publicity for
their website) and thirdly, and in
relation to the second point,
videographers are generally poor
marketers.
Those that have seen the
light, and who invest both time
and money on their website
presence are, in general, the
more successful videographers.
This doesn’t always correlate but
there seems to be a direct
relation between having a smart,
functional and visible website
and running a successful video
business. The question is what
comes first – a decent website or
a business of sufficient volume
that can sustain one? And that’s
simple to answer. Today, you
simply must have a website (or
at least some form of website
presence) if you want to take
every opportunity to build your
business. Failure to buy into this
concept will seriously hinder your
chances of success.
Evidence –
if you need it...
The story of the World Wide Web
throws up some amazing facts
and figures. Even though it’s a
relatively new phenomenon
(having been first conceived in
1990 by Sir Timothy BernersLee), if you come across
someone who claimed they knew
nothing about it you’d rightly
assume they were either bonkers
or had been in a deep coma for

the past 17-years. In this very
short time the web has become
entrenched in our private, public
and commercial lives. It
continues to twist and evolve and according to a recent survey
by Netcraft.com there are now
over 100 million unique websites
in the world (that’s entire sites –
not web pages, of which there
are many millions more!).
There are now well over a
billion website users worldwide –
many of which are now used to
buying and finding services and
products on the Internet. This
figure is rising by around 10%
each year. Probably more
significant is the type of people
who are naturally using the web
to search. Whilst this is a
generalisation, the younger the
age group of your potential
market the greater importance
having a website to market to
them will be. The wedding video
market is an excellent example –
where most customers will be in
their late teens early twenties.
These people have grown up with
the web – so you need to
communicate with them on a
level and a medium they
understand.
In another recent poll on the
IOV’s website – more than half of
the respondents reported that
more than 20% of new business
comes through their website and nearly 20% of respondents
said that more than half of their
new business came through their
website.
These should be convincing
figures to you. If these people
are gaining new business
through their sites – why aren’t
you? Again, there are going to
be a variety of answers to this
question, including the obvious
one - that you don’t have a
website! Slightly more
complicated answers include:
1) You do have a website but it
doesn’t attract any visitors;
2) You do have visitors but it still
doesn’t generate any enquiries, and;
3) It does generate enquires but
these do not convert into
business. Let us look into these
a little closer.
Article
1 - The Unvisited
Website
So, you’ve spent the kid’s
inheritance on getting a website
designed and hosted – but the
only traffic you get is you and
the occasional friend or relative.
Let me make you feel a little
better about this – you are not
the only one. Of the 100 million
websites out there yours will be
one of many which attract little
attention. Simply plonking a
website on the Internet will not
result in hoards of people just
itching to read all about you.
You have to direct people to it –
at every opportunity.
Your website address should
be included on every piece of
business literature, programme
title sequence, video sleeve and
DVD face, vehicle and building
livery (if you have either),
adverts, directory listings – and,
dare I say it, on your IOV
website profile!!!
You should take every
opportunity to tell your clients
your website address – so the
more memorable your website
name is, the easier it will be for
them to remember. That sounds
simple enough, but with more
than 100 million website already
up and running you’ll find this
quite a challenge. It doesn’t
mean finding a short and punchy
name (as these will probably
already be taken) – but
something memorable or logical.
There are loads of facilities
for checking the availability of
website names but the one I use
quite regularly is www.uk2.net.
Another way to drive traffic to
your site is to pay for advertising
on the search engines.
Commonly referred to as Payper-Click, this essentially
provides a quick means of
getting your site visible to those
who use search engines to look
for products or services. The
most widely used search engines
are Yahoo, Google and MSN
(which are ranked as the top
three most visited sites by
Alexa.com) – and these all offer
a means of paying for your site
to appear within the ‘Sponsored’
search results which appear at
the top (and sometimes down
the side) of the results of a
standard search.
These advertising solutions
are ideal for small businesses.
Not only can you tailor your own
set of ‘search strings’ (words that
potential customers will type into
the search engine when they
search), but you can also limit
your spend in various ways. You
can, for instance, set a monthly
overall budget as well as a
maximum rate per click for
individual search strings. You
can also assign a specific page
within your site to specific search
strings – so if your website has a
page detailing your DVD
duplication services you can
direct customers straight to it
from your sponsored link.
Rising up the standard search
results is a more complicated
subject, but the first step (which
is completely free) is to register
your website with all of the major
search engines. You can, of
course, dig around the websites
of all three search engines
looking for the page which allows
you to do this (and they can be
hidden very well) or you can use
a website that has done some of
this donkey work for you (such
as www.webmasters-hq.com/
add-url.php). Don’t be tempted
to buy a software package or
service that does this for you –
it’s a free service!
The other step in rising up
the search engines is called SEO
(Search Engine Optimisation).
This is a set of disciplines which
will enable your site to be more
easily found – by those who you
want to find it. It combines both
technical measures (ensuring
your website is search engine
friendly) and practical measures
(including gathering links from
and to other websites).
In the early days of search
engines they pretty much relied
on referencing what’s called
‘Meta Elements’ which are found
in the head section of the pages
of your website. This data is not
visible as part of the external
design, but should include
‘keywords’ associated with the
type of searches you want to be
found under. You can see what
other website use as keywords
by viewing the ‘source’ of the
website page (right-click and
select ‘View Source’).
However, this system was
and is open to abuse, so search
engines have adopted additional,
more sophisticated algorithms for
returning useful results to those
searching the web. They do not
disclose these methods, but the
general rule is that you need to
pay particular attention to the
following four elements:
z Keywords in the title tag
z Keywords in links pointing to
the page
z Keywords appearing in visible
text
z Link popularity of the page
www.iov.com
Google in particular uses the
number of sites that link back to
your website as a means of
ranking. This is why it’s
important to set up reciprocal
links with other website owners.
This form of back-scratching will
benefit both websites, which is
why you see specific ‘links’ pages
on websites – and it works
particularly well when the two
sites are operating in a similar
(though not competitive) market.
An example would be that a
wedding videographer’s website
includes links with a florist’s
website – and vice versa.
The IOV’s website is highly
ranked in all three major search
engines – especially under the
search string of ‘Videography’.
It’s normally number 1 or 2 in
Google and MSN – and within the
top 5 or 6 in Yahoo. Whilst the
guys at Novacaster (our website
technology providers) have done
a lot to ensure the technical
aspects of the site are right, over
the years we have also built up a
lot of links coming back to the
IOV site (current just short of
300).
The wonderful thing about
the web is that it holds many
websites and points of reference
which provide tips and tricks on
how to rise up in the search
engines. Some are very
technical and some are

will be that it may put off a fair

alternative is to have your

A softer approach would be
to offer a level of registered

incentive – such as entry into a

When buying hosting,
consider that you will want to put
downloadable versions of your
show reels on the site and video
is typically high bandwidth. Most
hosting companies put a cap on
the amount that can be
downloaded from your site –
they charge more for higher
caps. It pays to get sufficient
bandwidth in the first place, but
also consider how big your show
reels are – don’t just plonk them

shorten them and split them up
into smaller files for the website
– it’ll be a much better user
experience if you do.
Internet advertising with the
search engines can be as cheap
or as expensive as you want to
make it. With Google AdWords –
otherwise known as sponsored
links - you set yourself a monthly
budget, your ad appears when
someone types in the correct
keywords and you only get

your ad won’t appear anymore.
Prices can vary, but as an

Article
Of all the scenarios this will be
the easiest to understand but the
most difficult to accept.
Essentially, your sales process or
presentation is wrong or not in
line with your customer’s
expectations.
One of the grumbles we hear
most often from videographers is
that they receive enquiries from
customers, send out showreels
and information – and that’s the
last they ever hear from them.
They normally describe these
people as ‘time-wasters’. It’s
never an easy thing to say, but
the truth is there is only one
person wasting their time – and
that’s you! If you find that your
current sales technique is not
working, why keep on doing the
same thing? The first sign of
madness is doing the same thing
again and again, expecting
things to change!
A simple golden rule – don’t
send out showreels on a ‘fireand-forget’ basis. Whilst a
showreel can demonstrate how
skilled and creative you are it will
never actually sell your services.
People buy from people –
especially in a creative industry
such as videography. It’s far
better to make an appointment
with the customer (either at your
place or theirs) and present your
showreel. This will give you the
opportunity to ask questions,
engage the customer and sell
yourself.
If there are great distances
involved there will obviously be
times where you will need to
send them a showreel – or point
them towards an online version
on your website – but always
follow these up with a phone call.
Even if the customer declines
your services you can at least
take the opportunity to find out
why. Another good reason to
make personal appointments is
that it will filter out competitors
just being nosey.
Conclusion
There’s probably heaps more I
could say about the importance
of having an effective, visible and
up to date website. If it’s not
already, it should become the
single most important means of
promoting your services. The
perfect website will work for you
whilst you are asleep.
Your website is not something
you can just put in place and
then forget. You need to monitor
its success continually – not only
in terms of how much traffic it
attracts but also in terms of what
real business results from those
who find you this way. Styles
and website facilities change day
to day, so you need to keep an
eye on whether your site remains
in tune with your potential
market. Spend some time
checking out your competitors’
websites and make an honest
appraisal – on this first
impression, would you rather use
them than you? If the answer is
‘them’ – do something about it!
Finally, keep an eye on the
future as in the web-world things
change extremely rapidly. No
doubt at some point in the future
your programmes will be
distributed through your website.
You’ll probably not be making
copies of DVDs but providing
access to your creations online.
And when we are in this world
your website will become an
even greater part to your
business – and probably the
main means by which you’ll earn
your living. But I’m getting
ahead of myself here as online
content and distribution is a
whole different subject – which
will have to wait until next
month.
In the meantime, regardless
of your membership status –
please make sure you update
your IOV website profile to
include your website address.
External clients are only just one
way IOV members manage to
gain business from their
membership. There’s a huge
amount of member-to-member
business that takes place in the
IOV and you can all see each
others profiles within ‘Members
Zone’ (Find a Member) –
including links to your website if
you’ve included them!
Next month
As hinted, next month I’m being
really brave and will delve into
the world of online delivery of
your content. It’s not going to
be overly technical, but will
concentrate more on the
opportunities of both getting
your work to a wider audience
and, more importantly, the
future opportunities and models
for making money from your
online content.

Voice-overs
We all know someone with a
good voice. If they read your
script it would only cost a
beer or two. And why waste
money on a studio when you
could record it on your
camera mic in the front
room? Well, why not? In this
series of articles I aim to
show you just how important
a good voice-over track is and
how to achieve it.
Is it all about
the Voice?
over? After all, anyone can read
a script, can’t they?
Well yes, but a voice-over
artist doesn’t just read a script they breathe life into it. To do
this they use all kinds of
techniques including light and
shade, emphasis, pauses, and
even silence. A voice-over artist
can lift a good script to another
level. They can often make bad
scripts sound good too!
Most vo artists take the use
of language seriously. They care
about pronunciation and
meaning. At the same time they
also strive to sound natural,
rather than someone simply
reciting from a page. But just
because someone claims to do
voice-over work (journalists and
disc jockeys included) it does not
necessarily make them an
expert. We'll be examining
correct techniques so you can
make informed decisions when
choosing the right voice-over.
Having a good voice is only part
of the story. A real voice-over
artist, when properly directed
and recorded, will add an extra
dimension to your production. I
use the words ‘directed’ and
‘recorded’ because the whole
process is an art form. In this
series of articles I’ll be taking

you can shoot a video using any

on any microphone - but to make
it sound good you need to do

On top of all this there are other
issues to consider including
bookings, agents, negotiating,
costs, studios, ISDN, voice to

there. Once you have the
recording you can do more! The

Miscellaneous
X10 VHS Duping Bank with cabinet
and distribution amp
We have a large duping bank cabinet for
sale containing x10 Panasonic NV-HD630
Super Drive VHS decks incl. distribution
amp so there is no 'daisy chaining' of the
decks together, subsequently avoiding
any loss of signal quality. The decks
themselves are 4 years old but have
hardly been used in the last 2 years due
to us mainly mastering on to DVD now. It
is a great duping bank for anyone wishing
to do large runs of VHS tapes and is in
full working order. Pictures of the bank
are available on request. We are looking
for around £500.00 o.n.o We are based
in Chorley, Lancashire and the bank is
really only suitable for pick-up only.
