Faithful to the vision of St. Madeleine Sophie and our call from God, we gather together to create a community of distinction—where miracles are commonplace and the extraordinary is the expectation. Our children depend on the leadership, generosity and belief of the adult community to give them the gift that only Sacred Heart education can bring. Tuition dollars provide education for our children of the Sacred Heart from the first day of classes until the end of March. Your generosity to Annual Giving, the Benefit, and memorial and remembrance funds provides the education for the balance of the year and provides for all outside activities, events and those very special days of making memories the Sacred Heart way. We build relationships, connections, foster wisdom, encourage creativity and nourish the leaders of conscience who will direct our future. Your generosity makes it possible. Judith Hehs, Chloe Seaman, Rebecca Bazinski, Kathryn Mezwa, Christina Bacon, Bridget Bearss, RSCJ, Mackenzie Violassi, Kameron Habucke, Allison Leiser, Rebecca Stattler, Elizabeth Wiltsie’00 This edition of the Annual Report gives evidence to the difference you have made in the lives of the children of the Sacred Heart. From our commitment to play with our very youngest infants to our commitment to excellence for our graduates of the Upper School and Kensington Hall, your investment yields results that cannot be calculated in the confines of a balance sheet. Thank you for being the invisible army of angels that makes this mission possible. My very special thanks to the “herd of heart-givers” who transformed our “Window to the World” to give us a view of wild hope and wild hearts. Thank you to Gwen and Doug North, chairs of the “Wild at Heart” Benefit event, and the hundreds of volunteers who gave form to their vision. Your generosity opened a new chapter for our children and our mission and I am deeply grateful. Thank you! I extend my personal thanks to my partners in mission, the Board of Trustees, who have stood with me in these years of economic challenge and continue to guide our mission with tremendous leadership, extraordinary generosity and humble confidence in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I am personally indebted to Natalie Forte, who has led the charge in opening our hearts to a new way of thinking about each one’s personal contribution and commitment to this extraordinary community. As Vice-chair of the Board, Natalie has led with inspiring fortitude and continues to invite others to do what she and Chris have done to ensure the longevity of our fiscal sustainability. Thank you, Natalie and Chris! Please pray with me in gratitude for each one whose name appears on these pages and those who have intentionally chosen to forego recognition of any kind, but whose generosity has been the foundation of our new beginning. The Religious of the Sacred Heart pray in deep gratitude for each family who entrusts us with your investment in our mission. We count on your commitment as we pledge our own. With gratitude for your generosity, Bridget Bearss, RSCJ Head of School 2010-2011 ~ Annual Report Chair, Board of Trustee Report Robert E. Forrest, Chair, Board of Trustees The Academy of the Sacred Heart is a treasured place where our children are able to grow intellectually, spiritually and personally in an atmosphere where they are protected but not removed from the buffeting forces of our larger society. The year just concluded continued to offer new challenges to independent school education. Changing demographics and capital challenges remain, but the spirit in the State of Michigan and in our local communities has a new bounce of optimism – a much welcomed change from years past. Combine that with the hard work, tenacity and foresight of all in the administration and the commitment and dedication of our faculty, the Academy of the Sacred Heart was able to meet its challenges head on and have a very productive year. Special thanks to Doug and Gwen North who successfully chaired the Benefit. Thanks to Rob and Hillary Bradley and Hans-Werner and Anke Kaas for chairing our renowned Leaders of Conscience Speaker Series, now in its fourth year. Both events were hallmarks as we celebrated the Academy’s 160th year as the oldest and premier independent educational institution in the State of Michigan. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make a difference in the lives of each child. The Board of Trustees wishes to thank Sister Bridget Bearss, the faculty, administration and staff, parents, grandparents, alumnae and alumni and friends of the Academy who all contributed to giving our children the gift of a Sacred Heart education. Thank you for your service and continued generosity. 2010-2011 ~ Annual Report Robert E. This commitment requires a community effort in many ways, including fundraising. In fact, tuition covers only 85% of our operating expenses, representing a difference of approximately $2,200 between the price of tuition and the cost of educating each child. In order to meet our operating budget and to expand the services we offer to our children, we must fundraise. We conduct a variety of fundraising activities and events, which can be summarized by ABC, or Annual Giving, Benefit and Capital Campaigns. In short, Annual Giving and the Benefit occur each year, and support the school’s operating budget, making up the difference between tuition income and the cost of educating a child. Capital campaigns occur as needed to focus on a major project, such as building a new facility, renovating current facilities, reducing debt/bond structures or increasing the endowment. Annual Giving The Annual Giving helps us to subsidize the rising costs of an Upper School independent school education. All constituencies are asked to contribute, and every gift makes a difference. The largest gift any single donor has contributed is $25,000, and the smallest gift is $1. We ask everyone to give to the best of their abilities, and hope that the Academy of the Sacred Heart is a philanthropic priority. All gifts to the Annual Giving are 100% tax deductible (please consult your tax advisor for clarification). Benefit Each year, the Academy of the Sacred Heart hosts Benefit Auction fundraising events. Proceeds from these events go directly into the operating budget. The Patron Party/Main Event is held in the spring, generally in March. This is usually a formal occasion with a seated dinner and a large live auction. Other exciting activities have included raffles, Teacher Wish List items available for underwriting, student gifts and bidding for super silent auction items. Capital Campaign A capital campaign is a method of fundraising that allows us to build our assets to resolve needs that cannot be addressed through annual fundraising. By conducting a capital campaign, we can raise a significant amount of money over a limited time period for those special projects which will contribute to our long-term growth. Whether for new construction, renovation, reduction of debt or an increased endowment, capital campaigns allow us to advance our Strategic Plan and further the mission of the Academy of the Sacred Heart. 2010-2011 ~ Annual Report Cumulative Giving Partners in Mission We would like to acknowledge those individuals who generously invest in the mission of the Academy of the Sacred Heart by charitably supporting “multiple funds” in our development program such as the Annual Giving, Benefit, and Capital Campaign. The list that follows reflects the cumulative support of each individual whose combined generosity to the multiple funds mentioned above exceeded $2,500 in 2010-2011. Please join us in thanking them for their dedicated commitment, in so many ways, to the mission of Sacred Heart education. Leadership and Parent Volunteers When Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1800, she immediately described generosity as the characteristic of our spirit and mission. The service of our parent volunteers in every aspect of the school community makes our shared commitment possible. As the words of Sophie Barat above our statue on the ground floor reads, “Your actions, much more than your words will be an eloquent message to the world.” Thank you ...for being the eloquent message to the world... of hearts and hands united in generous service for the sake of our children. We honor those named for their service and those who have served without recognition or our knowledge in the hundreds of ways that parents make the mission of the Academy of the Sacred Heart possible. Revised and updated campaign literature was shared with the entire Sacred Heart Family. The Board of Trustees, inspired by the Major Gifts Committee, conducted several miniphone-a-thons to the current parent population that were followed by individual appointments with Bridget Bearss, RSCJ. Parents of Graduates as well as, Alumnae/i were invited to several receptions that also carried the campaign message: “like those who have gone before us, we need to continue to provide our students with the facilities, educators and community where they learn the power of choice and the expectation of hope that we have for them.” It is with grateful hearts that we thank both those who are new donors to the Living Our Legacy Capital Campaign and those who have continued to meet their pledge commitment. Wood 2010-2011 ~ Annual Report 37 2011 Wansboro Award Faithful to the spirit of Katherine Wansboro, RSCJ, the alumnae and alumni of the Academy of the Sacred Heart present the 2011 Wansboro Award to one who has cared for this “House Built on Confidence.” Surrounded by the attitudes of the heart of Jesus, we honor Matthew P. Colonius with this award recognizing integrity, faith, service, excellence and commitment. Matthew P. Colonius and “best friend.” The Society of the Sacred Heart was founded by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat in a spirit of prayer, fidelity, generosity and the service of education. Sophie Barat insisted that the care of each soul should be reflected in the equal care given to the house where learning happens and the grounds that allow the Spirit of God to unfold. She wrote, “Let the small details of the house, the love given to all things seen and touched by the children, the order and care given to each room for instruction, be given the greatest importance as the love given to these things will be the instruments of God’s presence in the lives of the pupils.” Nothing could more perfectly describe the vocation of Matthew P. Colonius. There once was a young man of 19 who arrived for a temporary position on his way to dreams of a horticulture business and financial prosperity. God had other things in mind. Formed in the shadow of those whose labor built this building and planted the saplings that now give shade to our students, Matt learned his craft from the best. Paul Roy and Mary Polizzi, RSCJ made Matt their special project and protégée. Praying that God would lead Matt back after his studies, the Religious of the Sacred Heart rejoiced when Matt and his family joined them by making this property their home, and celebrated each milestone in the life of his son, Christopher. From renovation to restoration to renewal to rebirth, the life of the Academy of the Sacred Heart has been shaped by the life of Matthew Colonius. Like the conductor of a symphony, Matt keeps all the instruments tuned and creates music for the heart in his care for this house of faith, hope and love. From snow plows to lawn mowers to bricks, cement and thousands of rolls of paper towels, Matt has built the kingdom of God by making love visible in every season and over more than 30 years of a life given in love. The entire Sacred Heart family salutes our colleague, friend, leader and brother for the gift of the heart that makes visible the heart of Jesus. Congratulations to Matthew Colonius on a life given in service of others, whose impact can never be measured. 38 2010-2011 ~ Annual Report 2011 Alumnae Community Service Award Since her freshman year, Asia Bond has been recognized for her positive energy, clear leadership ability and charitable spirit.
