Some will sound plausible, but never come to pass, some will be provocative and stir debate, but only in extreme circumstances will they actually turn out to be true. So for what it’s worth, here in no particular order are my 10 predictions for 2010. ■ At least one, and maybe as many as five of the world’s largest 50 construction equipment manufacturers will be acquired, brokenup, forced to sell-off a major division, be merged or in some way change ownership. This may include one or two of the top 10. ■ The companies doing the acquiring will be predominately Chinese equipment manufacturers. ■ The largest construction contractor in the world according to iC’s league table in the July-August 2010 edition will be a Chinese contractor. ■ Depressingly, corruption and anti-competitive behaviour will continue to fill iC’s news pages. ■ Visitor numbers for April’s Bauma exhibition in Munich will once again break the 0.5 million-mark. The event will be a psychological turning point for the global construction equipment industry. ■ Construction markets in Europe and North America may return to growth by the end of the year, while Brazil, China and India will go from strength to strength. ■ Over the course of the year, more than 1000 news stories will be added to our website, khl.com. ■ Russian and UK officials will claim repeatedly that preparations for the 2012 Olympics and 2014 Winter Olympics are on schedule. They will probably be telling the truth, but no-one in the mainstream media will believe them. ■ Hybrid powered construction machines will become more widely available – certainly contractors in Europe and the US will be buying them besides today’s existing customers in Asia. ■ By this time next year, whatever country of the world or sector of the construction industry you operate in, business will be better than it is today. Whenever I write a list like this, I look back on it and feel that my years of reporting on this industry have helped me produce a credible and likely set of predictions. Unfortunately, my years of reporting on this industry also tell me that I am invariably wrong about some, if not all of my predictions. I have hedged my bets a little, and if I look back on this list at the end of 2010, I’m confident of a score of five out of 10. But the world is an unpredictable place, and what seems like a certainty today can evaporate very quickly. Still, I stand by prediction no. 10. It has been a brutal year for the global industry, but I believe the worst has passed, and 2010 will see business gradually get better. The fund will provide loans of between UK£ 20 million (US$ 33.6 million) and UK£ 100 million (US$ 168 million) for small and medium sized onshore projects over the next three years. Global construction output will stabilise next year, with a robust recovery to follow in 2011. authorised BRL 1 billion (US$ 587 million) of Transport Ministry projects. They include sections of the Norte-Sul railway to link the northern state of Para to Mato Grosso do Sul in the South. lobal construction output will fall -4.9% this year according to forecasting company IHS Global Insight. Its latest Global Construction Outlook says the market will shrink to US$ 5.5 trillion this year with every region except developing Asia seeing a fall in construction spending. Back-to-back contractions in the world’s construction market during 2008 and 2009 will be followed by a flat year in 2010. This forecast reflects strong upturns in Asia coinciding with continued, but slowing declines in the US and European markets. More robust growth is expected in 2011 and beyond with a more than +5% growth rate for several consecutive years. SOUTH AFRICA The new central Regions terminal building (CTB) at Cape Town International Airport has opened to passengers. Built at a cost of ZAR 1.6 billion (US$ 216 million), the building covers an area of 50000 m2, and is part of an on-going development programme that will see car parks, a transport plaza, aircraft parking stands and a consolidated car rental area completed by March. Construction output in Asia (excluding Japan) is expected to rise +5.9% in this year, with another +7.1% increase in 2010. This growth is being led infrastructure investment and stimulus packages, most notably in China. The Chinese market is forecast to grow + 10.8% in 2010. However, the dynamism of Asian construction markets will be offset by declines in developed countries next year. Following a -12.5% fall in construction this year, the US market is set to drop another -6.8% in 2010. Similarly, this year’s -9.6% fall in Western European construction output will be followed by a -4.1% drop next year. Despite this fall, the region’s infrastructure market looks buoyant, with a +3.8% rise in output forecast for 2010 Meanwhile, Japan’s construction market is forecast to contract by -5.3% this year and grow by a marginal +0.6% in 2010. BRAZIL The government has MOROCCO Construction has begun on the MAD 350 million (US$ 46 million) Timkit dam in southeast Morocco. The project is designed to provide water for drinking and irrigation to nearby settlements, and the ground breaking was carried out by King Mohammed VI. G SAUDI ARABIA Work has begun on the first phase of the Riyadh light rail system. The project will initially comprise two lines totalling 25 km and 36 stations. INDIA The government has allocated a site in West Bengal for the construction of the country’s second Russian-designed and built nuclear power plant. Two reactors are currently under construction by Russian stateowned nuclear energy monopoly Atomstroyexport in Karngulam. FRANCE Vinci’s current CEO Xavier Huillard is being lined up to take over the joint role of company chairman & CEO, when it is created next may. The current chairman, Yves-Thibault de Silguy is likely to become vicechairman & senior director. CHINA Tall award The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) has awarded its 2009 Best Tall Building Overall to Steven Holl Architects for its completed Linked Hybrid complex in Beijing, China. The 220000 m² city complex includes eight towers linked by a ring of eight sky bridges. One tall building from four geographical regions including the Americas, Asia and Australia, Europe, and the Middle East and Africa is recognised by the CTBUH every year. Recipients must possess “seamless integration” of architectural form, structure, and building systems. They must also exhibit sustainable design qualities working to “preserve the quality of urban life.” At the awards ceremony, CTBUH executive director Antony Wood said, “This project points the way forward for the intensified multiuse, multi-level connected cities of the future.” A total of 660, 100 m deep, geothermal wells provide Linked Hybrid with cooling in summer and heating in winter. All the water in the project is recycled, using a grey water system that reuses an estimated 220000 litres of water each day, resulting in a -41% decrease in potable water usage. 6 internationalconstruction december 2009 ICON 12 09 News.indd 6 26/11/2009 11:04:38 WORLD NEWS DIARY DATES 2010 World of Concrete 2 – 5 February, 2010 Las Vegas, US www.worldofconcrete.com Bauma 2010 19 – 25 April, 2010 Munich, Germany Tel: +49 (0)89 9 49-1 13 48 Fax: +49 (0)89 9 49-1 13 49 www.bauma.de CTT Show 2010 (Inc ConExpo Russia) 1 – 5 June, 2010 Moscow, Russia www.mediaglobe.ru Hillhead 2010 AFRICA Infrastructure needs – a higher figure than previously A new study by the World Bank says sub-Saharan Africa needs to spend US$ 93 billion per year on infrastructure to maintain growth – equivalent to about 15% of GDP. The Bank estimates that that current under investment in electricity, water, roads and information & communications technology (ICT) is reducing economic growth by two percentage points each year and reduces business productivity by as much as -40%. The study, Africa’s Infrastructure: A Time for Transformation, found that a group of 24 sub-Saharan African countries already spends US$ 45 billion per year on infrastructure estimated. Most of this is domestically financed. However, the study also found that this figure could rise by another US$ 17 billion per year with the elimination of waste and efficiency improvements. This leaves a gap of US$ 31 billion per year, to meet the US$ 93 billion investment that is needed. The Bank says more than half this amount needs to be directed to the power sector, and adds that water supply infrastructure in the region is also in a fragile state. UK JCB shake-up JCB’s chief executive officer, US Unemployment rise Sandherr Unemployment among US construction workers has risen to 18.7% according to the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC). The AGC says 62000 US construction jobs were lost in October, taking the total number of construction workers who have been laid-off since December 2007 to 1.6 million. Association CEO Stephen E. WORLD The 2009 edition of Transparency International’s (TI’s) Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) shows that public sector corruption remains a problem in all regions of the world. The CPI scores 180 countries from 0 to 10, based on how corrupt they are perceived to be (0 is highly corrupt, 10 is very clean). The score is based on perceived levels of corruption in public-sector procurement, drawn from 13 independent business surveys. Out of the 180 countries surveyed, only 49 achieved a score of 5.0 or more. For more information and to see an interactive version of this map, search on “CPI” on khl.com said, “The nation’s economic troubles are forcing construction workers to shoulder a withering burden. Helpful as the stimulus has been in saving some construction jobs, it is going to take more work to halt the devastating job losses.” The AGC has welcomed the extension of the US government’s extension of its policy of tax credits for homebuyers. Matthew Taylor, is to leave the company at the end of this year “to pursue other opportunities”, said the equipment manufacturer. He will be replaced by Alan Blake, the current chief operating officer who has been a senior executive at JCB for 20 years. JCB said that the departure of Mr Taylor – who will take up a new opportunity to be announced in the New Year – heralded in a new management structure at the company. 22 – 24 June, 2010 Buxton,UK Tel: +44 (0)115 945 3890 www.hillhead.com Bauma China 2010 23-26 November, 2010 Shanghai, China www.bauma-china.com 2011 Bauma/ConExpo India 2011 8-11 February, 2011 Mumbai, India www.bCIndia.com Samoter 2011 2 – 6 March, 2011 Verona, Italy www.samoter.com ConExpo-Con/Agg 2011 22 – 26 March, 2011 Las Vegas, USA www.conexpoconagg.com 2012 Intermat 2012 April, 2012 Paris, France www.intermat.fr 2014 Samoter 2014 5 – 9 March, 2014 Verona, Italy www.samoter.com ConExpo-Con/Agg 2014 18 – 22 March, 2014 Las Vegas, USA www.conexpoconagg.com december 2009 internationalconstruction 7 ICON 12 09 News.indd 7 26/11/2009 10:46:28 WORLD NEWS INDIA WORLD CHINA PPP loan Emerging growth Special award The UK-based Chartered Institute The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced a US$ 700 million loan to India to help the country implement its programme of public-private partnership (PPP) infrastructure construction. The funds follow a similar US$ 500 million loan made in 2007. The money will be released over five years to the state-owned India Infrastructure Finance Company Ltd (IIFCL), a body that was set up in 1996 to promote PPPs. IIFCL will use the money to lend to PPP projects on commercial terms over 20+ year maturity periods, filling what the ADB says is a gap in the infrastructure financing market. IIFCL says that as of August this year it had received 192 PPP project proposals, 107 of which it deemed eligible for funding. It is estimated that for every US$ 1 of IIFCL investment, a further US$ 7 is mobilised from capital markets, which is to say that the US$ 700 million ADB loan could facilitate a total investment in Indian infrastructure of US$ 5.6 billion. In addition to the ADB’s loans, September saw the World Bank announce a US$ 1.2 billion loan to IIFCL, as part of a wider US$ 4.3 billion package. Developing construction markets will be worth US$ 7 trillion by 2020, 55% of the world total. he value of construction in emerging countries will more than double in the next 11 years according to Global Construction 2020, a new report from Global Construction Perspectives and Oxford Economics. Global construction output is expected to increase +70% overall, with mature countries’ output rising +35%, compared to the +110% rise forecast in the developing world. According to the report, the world construction market will be worth US$ 12.7 trillion in 2020, compared to US$ 7.5 trillion today. The steeper growth of emerging countries mean they will dominate by this time, with an output of US$ 7 trillion – 55% of the total. In contrast, today’s mature markets will rise from their US$ 4.2 trillion value today to US$ 5.7 trillion in 2020. The key driver to this emerging market growth is expected to be infrastructure construction, which the report says will grow +128% over the next decade. At the same time, non-residential construction in emerging markets is expected to double. One result of this is that China is expected to overtake the US as the world’s largest construction market in 2018. By 2020 the Chinese construction market is expected to be worth US£ 2.5 trillion – a staggering 19.1% of the global total. Despite more lacklustre growth in developed world construction markets, there are expected to be some bright spots. Most notable is North America, with the US market forecast for a strong housing-led rebound from 2011 to 2013. ■ For more information, to purchase the report or find out about the Global Construction Perspectives database of forecasts, visit www.globalconstruction2020.com T JAPAN Goldhofer supplied three PST-ES/E Series self-propelled heavy-duty transport systems to the Higashi-Meihan-Highway project to link Nagoya and Osaka in Japan. The 19 axle line vehicle was used by Central Nippon Expressway to transport a 95 m long, 545 tonne bridge section into place at the Tenpaku junction, at a height of some 30 m. Each of the modules was fitted with a 60 tonne capacity lift table, which allowed the deck section to be moved into place in an operation the contractor said would not have been possible with conventional cranes. of Building (CIOB) has given a special award to Yu Yong, a Fellow of the Institute, for his role reconstruction in Sichuan Province, China following last May’s Earthquake. Mr Yu was appointed general manager of Shanghai Research Institute of Building Sciences (SRIBS) Dujiangyan Reconstruction Project Management following the earthquake. According to CIOB, in the following 12 months he oversaw the completion of 22 schools covering 370000 m2 and providing 768 classes for 30000 students. The value of this work was put at CNY 1 billion (US$ 147 million). Professor Li Shirong President of the CIOB said, “The sheer volume of construction is clearly quite incredible. But what makes this project so special are the design and building techniques that have taken place to make these schools as safe, and resistant, as possible should further earthquakes hit the area again. “It is an honour and a privilege to present Mr. Yu with a Special Award that recognises his achievements. It shows just how fundamental the management of construction is for helping, in this case, to repair societies and mend broken lives.” ETHIOPIA Road first China’s Export-Import (EXIM) Bank has signed a US$ 349 million loan agreement to fund the construction of Ethiopia’s first express highway. The 79 km road will connect the capital Addis Ababa with Adama to the Southeast. A year after Boskalis’ hostile approach to Smit, the two companies are to merge on friendly terms. redging company Boskalis Westminster and maritime services company Smit have announced a friendly merger just over a year after Smit rejected a hostile bid from Boskalis. The new deal will see Boskalis acquire Smit for € 60 (US$ 89.40) per share, valuing the company at € 1.06 billion (US$ 1.58 billion). Last September’s hostile offer was pitched at € 62.50 (US$ 93.13) per share, 4.2% higher. A crucial difference between today’s proposal and the 2008 offer is that Boskalis says it will continue with all of Smit’s activities and maintain the Smit brand. In contrast, with last September’s plan, Boskalis was only going to keep Smit’s heavy lift, transport and salvage arm. Two other divisions – towage and operating oil & gas terminals were to be sold-off. Boskalis CEO Peter Berdowski said, “Combining our companies creates a Dutch maritime player of a global scale. This merger fits excellently with out strategy aimed at reinforcing and expanding our maritime services.” The merger is being supported in principle by both companies’ Management and Supervisory Boards. However, Smit has appointed RBS as a financial advisor, and says it will take a view on the for € 60 (US$ 89.40) per share level of Boskalis’ offer at a later date. Notwithstanding this, shareholders representing 44% of Smit’s ownership have accepted the offer. Chris Sleight spoke to Cement Sustainability Initiative programme director Dr Howard Klee. his month will see politicians, businesses, scientists, non-government organisations and all manner of other stakeholders descend on Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference. It will be the 15th time the 192 countries that have signed up to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) have met following the establishment of this treaty at a summit in Rio, Brazil in 1992. The key focus of these annual meetings is of course on emissions of greenhouse gasses, particularly carbon dioxide (CO2). It is the build-up of these gasses in the earth’s atmosphere that are thought to be causing the earth’s temperature to rise. At first glance, the construction industry does not seem to be a prime CO2 emitting culprit compared to transport or energyhungry manufacturing processes. However, the production of cement releases huge amounts of this gas into the atmosphere – not just through the energy consumed in cement kilns, but also from the chemical reaction that takes place within them. In fact for every tonne of cement clinker manufactured, almost the same mass of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. After water, cement is the most widely used material on the planet, and in the region of 2.5 billion tonnes is manufactured every year. Even if the most efficient kilns were used everywhere in the world that would still equate to more than 2 billion tonnes of CO2. Not surprising then that the sector is being targeted to cut its emissions. But what is unusual about the cement sector is that it is the industry itself that is taking the lead through the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), which is organised under the auspices of the World Business Council for Sustainable Sust s ainable Development (WBCSD) and includes the ‘household names’ in the cement industry – the likes of Lafarge, Holcim, Cemex and so on. T CSI programme director Dr Howard Klee. > “Frankly, given the size of the problem, we’re going to need all the options we can dream up.” december 2009 internationalconstruction 13 ICON 1209 Interview.indd 13 26/11/2009 10:47:49 INTERVIEW Copenhagen cement CO2 accounting One of the most important initiatives to come out of the CSI in recent years has been its ‘Getting the Numbers Right’ project, which has seen solid and credible statistics gathered on cement production and emissions, to help the industry find the best way to reduce CO2. But even with this data available, it is a complex challenge due to different laws and policies in place on emissions in different parts of the world. This is why the WBCSD is advocating what it describes as a ‘Sectoral Approach’, which is to say that cement companies will take the lead internationally with the best technologies, but work within the national and regional policy frameworks they find in different parts of the world. CSI programme director Dr Howard Klee explained further, “One reason for this sectoral approach was to come up with policies that would engage emerging economies. Today about 80% of the world’s cement is produced in emerging economies. We need to have a system that does not penalise emerging economies, but allows them to participate,” he said He continued, “Clearly the policy that produces the most emission reductions is having a cap (on CO2 emissions) in place globally, but more than 50% of the world says they’re not going to do that. We just didn’t think that was practical at this stage maybe further down the road it could work.” But one concern that has been voiced is that this scenario of limits on carbon in only one or two regions of the world will lead to a phenomenon called ‘carbon leakage’. The worry is that it will be cheaper to produce cement outside such tightly controlled areas and then ship it in, undercutting local producers that have to pay extra to emit CO2. Besides the question of fairness, this would be counterproductive on a global level. Not only would the transportation of cement add unnecessary CO2, but it may also come from less energy efficient plants. Dr Klee said, “It’s a legitimate concern. Cement is traded internationally and if the carbon price differences get to be large enough between different parts of the world you’ll drive that. All you need to do is match the marginal production cost plus transportation, and at the moment transportation is awfully cheap. There are lots of empty ships sitting around at the moment, although three years ago that was not the case. “We need to have a system that does not penalise emerging economies, but allows them to participate.” “The modelling we did said that if you had a cap in place in Europe and the rest of the world did nothing, you would see 30% to 40% of cement production come from outside Europe.” “Part of the sectoral approach is to combine with those policies that address that issue. In Europe for example the difference between (carbon) allocations that are free against auctioning makes a huge difference. Allowance allocations that are free would more or less dissolve the problem of leakage because it’s much less expensive – you don’t have to put all the money out upfront.” China This is all very well, but the key player in reducing emissions from cement production is China. About half the world’s cement is manufactured in China, and Dr Klee admits that at the moment it is a big gap, although he sees changes afoot. “We’re about to get several Chinese members into the CSI – certainly by the end of the year. That will certainly boost coverage, because at the moment we’re limited to the operations of the international members of the CSI, which represents only about 5% of production. It may be a black hole at the moment in terms of statistics, but Dr Klee said there was still reason to believe the industry was improving its standards. “One of the biggest, most obvious problems is the scale. Lots and lots of companies – it’s a very fragmented industry. The Chinese have been consolidating it over the last few years, and they’ve also been shutting down plants over the last two years. Last year they closed something like 65 million tonnes of capacity, and they actually tore down the old plants – so they’re serious. This year the number is more like 100 million tonnes, so those two numbers combined are close to the total capacity in Europe. “So they are moving, and they are building new plants that are much better than the old ones. There is a movement from small vertical shaft kilns which have no emission controls and are relatively inefficient to larger, typical, state of the art plants,” he said. Copenhagen outcome? Speaking to Dr Klee, it is clear he is convinced the industry is moving in the right direction, and that the sectoral approach the CSI is advocating will be the best way forward. However, he is not ruling out other policies, and his hope from the Copenhagen meeting is for a pragmatic approach. “We would like to see a framework put in place that includes a menu of different mechanisms, and some of the details fleshed out about how they could fit together,” he said. In conclusion, Dr Klee added, “Frankly, given the size of the problem, we’re going to need all the options we can dream up.” iC 14 internationalconstruction december 2009 ICON 1209 Interview.indd 14 26/11/2009 10:48:01 With you all the way. Scott Hazelton reports. he economic outlook for Latin America has improved in the past quarter in tandem with better prospects for the global economy. The rise in commodity prices from their trough in the first quarter of 2009 have been key to this, although actual demand (volume) for Latin American exports remains subdued. In Brazil, the second quarter of the year marked the end of a relatively short-lived recession, from the fourth quarter of 2008 through the first quarter of 2009. It was not investment that led the recovery, but rather private consumption, which was largely encouraged by government subsidies and tax breaks. Other countries such as Peru, Colombia, and Panama are set to post positive growth rates in the third quarter of the year after relatively mild recessions. A further group, including Chile will emerge from a tougher period, but the general outlook is one of recovery. There are however risks that may derail the expected expansion. Most are related to external factors such as the potential deceleration of the Chinese economy, which would not only bring down commodity prices again, but would also T translate into lower demand, lowering Latin American exports. Similar risks are also present in the US and European economies. On the fiscal side, improved public finances during the boom years allowed the governments to execute counter-cyclical policies (i.e. fiscal stimulus) during the worst of the crisis, but this help from the governments will wane in 2010. On the positive side, inflation remains low, so there will be no need to withdraw stimulus spending quickly because of spiralling prices. Strong fundamentals On a positive note, the majority of countries in the region have robust and well-capitalised financial systems that are not burdened by the ‘toxic assets’ that continue to drag on developed world banks. Also, non-performing loans represent only a very small fraction of total loans, most of which are fully covered by loan-loss reserves, making systemic risk very low. Growth in domestic credit is expected to fuel consumption and investment, although IHS Global Insight does not expect to see growth rates on a par with the 2003 to 2008 boom. Investment should return to the region in the coming quarters and will become the major driver of the upturn. Most central banks in the region have completed the expansionary cycle and are not expected to cut interest rates further. Nevertheless, the positive effects on consumption and investment will still be present through the first half of 2010. Construction growth The strongest growth in the medium term will be in Panama, although the size of the construction market is relatively small. Investment related to the expansion of the Panama Canal remains the key driver – not just work on the waterway itself, but also commercial and industrial structures and associated infrastructure. In terms of size, by far the largest market in the region is Brazil. It is a country that many consider to have great potential, but which has not been realised to date. However, there are strong reasons to believe this is changing. First, its fiscal and monetary situations are better than ever before. Second, the discovery of offshore oil will attract foreign investment, > Construction output in US Dollars 300 250 200 150 100 Brazil Argentina Colombia Venezuela 2018 2017 2016 2015 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006 2005 2004 2003 2002 2001 2000 0 Peru december 2009 internationalconstruction 17 ICON 1209 Economic Outlook.indd 17 26/11/2009 10:48:53 ECONOMIC OUTLOOK Latin recovery Construction growth forecasts – 2008 to 2011 while the future oil revenues should provide the financial underpinning for a prolonged expansion. Of course, the award of the Olympic Games will create investment around the host city of Rio in both the venues and supporting infrastructure. There may also be investment in commercial buildings and even residential structures to make the city attractive to the cameras of the world. Indeed, this year’s energy blackout in Brazil (which spread to neighbouring countries), while a short-term embarrassment, will certainly trigger investments in upgrading utilities. Venezuela’s situation is enviable in that its massive energy reserves allow for considerable construction activity. However, the ‘resource About Global Insight 10% 8% 6% 4% 2% 0% -2% -4% -6% Argentina Colombia Peru Venezuela 2009 Recognised as the most consistently accurate forecasting company in the world, IHS Global Insight has over 3800 clients in industry, finance, and government with revenues in excess of US$ 80 million, 600 employees, and 23 offices in 13 countries covering North and South America, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. ■ For more information on matters discussed in this article or Global Insights’ services, visit www.globalinsight.com or contact Scott Hazelton in the US on +1 781 301 9044 or at scott.hazelton@ihsglobalinsight.com 2010 nationalism’ of the Chavez government and the accompanying disregard for the integrity of private property make investment a risky proposition, which reduces the potential for growth. While Venezuela will recover from recession in 2010, growth will be tepid, with a stronger advance in 2011 as the global recovery takes hold and oil prices start to climb again. Argentina and Colombia will experience a more prolonged slowdown, and Colombia could be hindered even into 2011. For Argentina, lower commodity prices and weaker demand for exports have reduced fiscal revenues and reduced the ability of the government to stimulate the economy. 2011 Brazil Panama 2012 More worrisome, the financial system has become more cautious in its lending as nonperforming loans are increasing, making it more difficult for firms to find adequate financing. Similar issues exist for Colombia, but they are compounded by the break-up of commercial relations with neighbouring Venezuela, which will impose additional pressure on the manufacturing sector, particularly automotive. As a region, South America is set to outpace world construction growth in the coming years. While not meeting the performance of Asia, the region will still manage compound growth approaching +10% over the next five years, roughly twice the expected global growth. iC EUROMIX 4000 Mobility for big projects new generation of wheel-based mixing unit 170 m³/h of hardened concrete just in time rapid relocation no foundations required for assembly production independent of local infrastructure SBM Mineral Processing GmbH | Betonmischanlagen | Mobile & Stationäre Anlagen | Service & Support | www.sbm-mp.at 18 internationalconstruction december 2009 ICON 1209 Economic Outlook.indd 18 26/11/2009 10:49:02 Full page.indd 1 25/11/2009 11:04:21 SITE REPORT Clean power Preparing the sides of the 1.2 million m3 storage reservoir for installation of the waterproof membrane. La Confluencia will draw its water from three rivers – the Tinguiririca, Portillo and Azufre, which in turn are fed by rainwater, melting snow and glacial ice. Keeping this wilderness in a pristine state is a high priority for the Chilean government, the project’s owners Tinguiririca Energia and the Constructora Hochtief-Tecsa (CHT) joint venture delivering the project. Tinguiririca Energia has also set up the Tinguiririca Participa initiative, which has already funded nearly 100 community projects in environmental protection, health and education. The site itself is run to the ISO 14000 environmental management standard and there are also other measures imposed by CHT to ensure its work and workforce leave the valley as close to its original state as possible. “No structure on the site will be higher than 15 m,” said Axel Paul, general manager for CHT, “which will reduce the visual impact of the project once it’s complete. “No one was displaced and as La Confluencia is a run-of-river project there is very little impact on the environment – no huge lake, for example. Once this is complete the tunnels walls are shotcreted, although Mr Paul said CHT tried to avoid this where possible. “Like any other partnership our working relationship is based on trust,” said Mr Olguin. “CHT trusts us to deliver our products when they are needed and we trust them to continue the relationship on other projects.” And so far, added Mr Paul, the relationship is working well. “We’ve been very pleased with the availability of the rigs, which is well above 95%. Of course there are the usual stoppages on a job of this size, but I’ve been surprised at how easily the rigs are handling the workload,” he added. São Paulo’s Congonhas airport has already been renovated as part of Infraero’s programme and around US$ 1.6 billion is expected to be invested in building a new terminal and runway at Campinas airport, also in São Paulo. Another major airport project is in Natal in the far North East of Brazil, which will be built and operated as a private- public partnership (PPP). Rachel Dias Azevedo, infrastructure and sports sector manager for UKTI Brazil told iC, “The main thing in terms of investment and budget as well as in terms of importance and impact of the World Cup (and afterwards the Olympics) is going to be airports. “Airports are the most expensive projects and the most problematic because they are really old and really small and people in Brazil haven’t historically travelled by air so it’s been a new phenomenon in the last 10 years and it will just keep growing,” she said. Faith Quigley, Brazil specialist for UKTI, said long distances between the 12 World Cup host cities present huge transport challenges, not least for airport infrastructure. “Air travel will be the main transport method for most of the World Cup fans in 2014. The number of passengers using the air network is expected to double during the month of the World Cup from about 4 million to about 8 million but demand for air travel in general is increasing in Brazil at a rate of around +5% a year so any investment is beneficial in the long term development of Brazil as well.” Infraero does not have the resources required to maintain and regenerate the airports if current growth levels are sustained. Therefore, the Government is looking at alternative models to attract private investment, including privatisation, concessions and public-private partnerships PPPs. Urban transport In 2004, SIMEM provided a complete WetBeton 160 Dam plant to Jayne Construction Company for the construction of the Ärst RCC dam in Iran, Jahgin dam Ms Quigley said one of the key challenges for Brazil ahead of the World Cup and Olympic Games is to improve the country’s urban transport systems, which as well as airports includes railways, ports and roads. She added the Government’s ‘PAC da Copa’ will address this issue and although funding has not yet been agreed proposals suggest more than US$ 16 billion could be invested in this area during the next few years. The Government has committed to improve the rail network via the PAC programme which RELIABLE QUALITY & ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY Providing innovative products and engineering services for concrete production in the most important worldwide construction sites, are our only aim since 1963. Meanwhile, Ms Dias Azevedo said, “I think in terms of infrastructure in general the stadia is what everyone looks at because that’s what football is about, but it will only take about 15% of the total investment.” Olympic links systems such as Trans and light rail, which are fairly new to Brazil, are becoming more popular, Ms Quigley added. Stadiums According to Ms Quigley the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) said that none of the stadiums in Brazil would be suitable to stage 2014 World Cup matches in their current state. Stadiums will be located in 12 host cities including Belo Horizonte, Brasília, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo. “Three new stadia are going to be built and most of the others will undergo major structural work, most needing new or extended roofs, improved media and executive facilities and larger parking areas,” she added. About US$ 2.4 billion is expected to be spent renovating and constructing the new stadiums for the World Cup but the Many of the stadiums and associated infrastructure built for the World Cup will of course benefit the 2016 Olympic Games. The Maracanã stadium in Rio will undergo a major refurbishment for the World Cup, costing around US$ 252 million but it will also stage the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Meanwhile, around US$ 3.4 billion will be invested in the Rio’s transport network – a rapid bus system will be built around the city as well as a new metro line which will link the city centre to Barra, where the Olympic and Paralympic Village will be located. The Olympic training centre will incorporate two existing venues which were built for the 2007 Pan American games, also held in Brazil, as well as a number of new facilities for the 2016 Games. The existing João Havelange stadium, the Olympic athletics venue, will also be renovated and its capacity increased from 45000 to 60000. Meanwhile, the Deodoro region to the north of the city will be regenerated and will become home to the new ‘X Park, a sports complex that will combine various Olympic disciplines with more modern ‘extreme’ sports and this is hoped to be part of the legacy of the Games. “In terms of sport and infrastructure Brazil really is the place to be for the next 10 years,” Ms Quigley said. iC 28 internationalconstruction december 2009 ICON 1209 Regional Report.indd 28 26/11/2009 10:53:22 Full page.indd 1 26/11/2009 09:52:46 www.hyundai-ce.com Overcome the Limits HYUNDAI - The New Standards Come and experience up-to-the-minute technology of Hyundai ᵉ HEAD OFFICE TEL : 82 52 202 7970, 7729 FAX : 82 52 202 7979, 7720 www.hyundai-ce.com ᵉ HHI USA TEL : 1 847 437 3333 FAX : 1 847 437 3574 www.hceusa.com ᵉ HHI EUROPE TEL : 32 14 56 2200 FAX : 32 14 59 3405~6 www.hyundai.eu Full page.indd 1 ᵉ HHI JIANGSU TEL : 86 519 519 1301 FAX : 86 519 519 1385 www.hyundai-cn.com ᵉ HHI BEIJING TEL : 86 10 8321 4735 FAX : 86 10 8321 2726 www.hyundai-bj.com ᵉ HHI INDIA TEL : 91 21 3530 1700 FAX : 91 21 3530 1712 25/11/2009 11:27:32 CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION In the mix A Zoomlion ZLJ5261THB four section, 37 m, Z boom truck mounted pump has become the first Chinese concrete pump to start operating in Greece. In the mix Developments in concrete mixing technology are cutting production times and reducing consumption of both energy and cement. Steve Skinner reports on the impetus for speed set against a need for concrete excellence. his year’s SAIE exhibition in Italy was note-worthy for the number of new concrete mixing and batching plants on show. From innovative new systems to enhanced versions of existing technology, SAIE demonstrated that equipment behind the production of concrete is evolving at a pace. Armando Chillon unveiled its new range of single shaft concrete mixers. Ideally suited to precast and ready mix applications as well as large scale on-site production, the AC mixers are capable of mixing up to 5 m3 of concrete in just 30 seconds. At the heart of the mixers is a belt-driven solid steel input shaft to which two helical shovels are attached. At 20 rpm, the shovels turn the material 40 times in 30 seconds to achieve a fast yet high quality mix in which water content is continually measured with a microwave probe. T With limited moving parts and the incorporation of a cast iron liner designed with a lifespan throughput of 1 million m3, the AC range discharges mixed concrete in under 10 seconds through a hydraulically operated gate. In situations where drum cleaning might be required between batches, Chillon also has an optional 10 nozzle high pressure automatic cleaning system for the AC range. Partner in the company, Lisa Chillon told iC, “This new mixing technology is available to both manufacturers of batching plants and to end users. The Chillon AC mixer is extremely strong mechanically and requires a much lower power motor than alternative mixing systems, so is kinder to the environment and is cost efficient to operate.” Officine Piccini used the show to launch its new four strong series of concrete batching and mixing plants featuring capacities of between 30 and 120 m3. Customer care representative Marianna Martucci told iC, “We used to manufacture bespoke plants, but we noticed that demand usually fell in the same areas so we decided to produce a standard series. “The new series represents easy to use simple batching plants with all components manufactured by Piccini. We are confident that a standard offering suits the current market demands,” she said. O. Cuoghi launched its concrete high technology turbo (CHTT) mixer for the production of cement paste. > december 2009 internationalconstruction 31 ICON 1209 Concrete Con.indd 31 26/11/2009 10:54:52 CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION In the mix Meka’s new C20 batching plant fits in a 12 m container and can be set up in less than a day on level compact ground. Euromecc’s new Euromobil4 Fast 100 is a three element modular mobile mixing and batching plant featuring a 100 m3 per hour capacity. At the heart of Armando Chillon’s single-shaft mixers is a belt driven solid iron input shaft to which two helical shovels are attached, turning the material 40 times in 30 seconds. Technical and commercial manager, Salvatore Roccaforte said, “The CHTT mixer can be combined with an existing dry batching plant to convert it into a full wet concrete plant. “This system saves on cement yet the concrete is extremely consistent and has better flowability over dry mix,” he told iC. Paste Mixing takes place under pressure, while additional disturbers are mounted within the drum to add turbulence to improve the mix. The CHTT mixer is equipped with a 45 kW electric centrifugal pump and the drum sits on electronic weight sensors for accurate batching. “We believe that through mixing cement paste with this system a producer can achieve a better class slump from the same quantities of materials,” said Mr Roccaforte. The mixer features four water jets that operate at 200 bar to clean the drum automatically after each batch, and the water is kept within the system to act as the batching water for the next cycle. Mr Roccaforte told iC, “Another significant advantage of this system is that it uses up to -75% less energy than classic planetary or twin-shaft mixers while producing more homogeneous concrete with better mechanical properties.” The CHTT mixer features the capacity to produce 12 m3 batches in six minutes, including loading and cleaning, so has a maximum throughput of 120 m3 per hour. Kimera, a division of the Socage Group, showed its truck mounted batching and mixing plant at SAIE. Featuring an output capacity of 60 m3 per hour, the unit mixes a cement paste, which is in turn mixed with aggregate, a process that takes just 20 seconds for an 8 m3 batch. Engineering manager at Kimera, Danilo Maffei told iC, “This unit is ideal for long distance and urban construction where a traditional drum mixer would be impractical. It also suits hot climates such as the Middle East and South America because the concrete is only mixed when it’s needed.” Featuring four 800 l water tanks, the 40 tonne truck can be loaded with 12 m3 of aggregates and 5 tonnes of cement, yet with its continuous flow capability and low regulated height can also be fed with materials transported separately. “This system is particularly ecologically friendly because there’s no footprint and operators only mix the exact quantity that’s needed. Furthermore, because the unit’s fully mobile, operators don’t need to worry about obtaining planning permission to set-up on site,” said Mr Maffei. Following the launch, Kimera is already designing a smaller unit to fit a twin axle truck in the 9 to 11 tonne range. Beyond SAIE, Ammann’s Amix twinshaft paddle mixer features an optimised plate design and has been designed with wear resistant coatings on the feeder lining, mixing arms and blades to prolong service intervals and reduce operating costs. Marketing assistant Marion Ciaffoni said, “Ecology and safety are key aspects in new product development here at Ammann. Furthermore, to address a growing demand for high capacity plants that can be easily relocated, we are now working on the expansion of our range to include a semi-mobile plant featuring a large volume Amix mixer.” BHS –Sonthofen has extended its range of mixers to suit advanced concrete recipes and enable its systems to be configured more precisely to mix designs. Managing director, Chrsitof Kemmann told iC, “Most recently we launched a twin-shaft batch mixer with two opposite mixing arms to introduce more shear forces into the mix. Each tunnel measures 1550 m in length with a diameter of 3.5 m and both cover a vertical drop of 750 m. O. Cuoghi’s new concrete high technology turbo (CHTT) mixer has been designed to produce cement paste and has a maximum throughput of 120 m3 per hour. Mecbo debuted its MB24L Lineare truck mounted mixer pump with a 24 m boom at SAIE. The offset of the boom means the outriggers only protrude on one side giving an operating width of just 3.7 m. To cope with the enormous pressures on the first tunnel, a Schwing SP4000S long stroke concrete pump with electric drive was connected to a heavy duty 125 mm concrete pipeline featuring a wall thickness of 8.8 mm, slimming down to 7.1 mm for the upper reaches. The pressure in the pipeline was constantly monitored using pressure gauges on the pump and in the line. “During the last concrete pour, over the full record breaking vertical climb of 715 m, the pressure in the pipeline registered 220 bar, with the Schwing rock valve resisting a weight of 43 tonnes of concrete,” said a Schwing spokesperson. “With the SP4000S running at eight strokes per minute Gammon-India was able to pump 12 m3 per hour.” With the first tunnel now completed, the pump and pipeline are being installed in the second tunnel, with completion scheduled for the summer of 2010. Capable of pumping up to 40 m3 per hour, the track mounted Cingolo is self-propelled and with dimensions of 1.6 m by 4.3 m, and a height of 2.5 m, has been designed for easy movement around sites. Also at SAIE, Mecbo debuted its MB24L Lineare truck mounted mixer pump with a three section, 24 m boom and carbon steel pipeline. The 400 l hopper can either be fed by the truck’s own mixer drum or by additional truck mixers due to its low level mounting. Maurizio Negroni of Mecbo’s commercial office told iC, “Because of the offset of the boom, the outriggers only protrude on one side of the truck. This means the unit has a total operating width of just 3.7 m, yet still offers a horizontal reach of 19.5 m and a vertical reach of 23.8 m.” The up to 17.8 tonne MB24L Lineare unit can be equipped with mixing drums of either 7, 8 or 9 m3 capacity and is fitted with Mecbo’s Pulsar 4 hydraulic ‘S’ valve pump with a maximum output of 60 m3 per hour. Revolution While the concrete sector is far from facing a revolution, mix designs and the equipment to produce and manage them are evolving. As BHS-Sonthofen’s Mr Kemmann told iC, “Contractors are under tough competition and are looking for more benefits such as reduced energy consumption set against excellent mix quality. “We also see a growing number of contractors looking for increased flexibility in their equipment so they can produce both standard and advanced concrete recipes with the same tools.” iC A ceiling mounted runway beam and trolley system devised by RMD Kwikform has been used to move four 8 x 6 m panels. Weighing 16 tonnes in total, the panels are being used to form the north structure escape of the new Tyne Tunnel in Newcastle, UK. Becca Wilkins reports. arthmoving equipment manufacturers are developing more fuel efficient machines to help contractors increase productivity and lower overall operating costs. At the same time the industry is consumed with preparing for the next stage of engine emissions regulations which come into force in 2011. E Legislative drive Volvo’s A35D articulated dump truck (ADT) and EC700B LC crawler excavator working on Saudi Arabia’s expanding rail network. machines’ already restricted engine compartments. However, Mr Rinaldo added, “Thanks to the wider Volvo Group we have experience within the on-road equipment sector and we also have our (engine business) Volvo Penta, which is working on this and they are one step ahead of the off-road industry so it won’t be an issue for us as a company.” David Bell, managing director for sales at JCB, agrees meeting the Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final regulations is one of the key product drivers within the earthmoving industry. He also said the installation of the new engines could present challenges. He said, “I don’t think the industry has done a great job in presenting the issues to the (European) Commission. I think the Commission is much more driven by trucks and cars in terms of emissions regulations. > Arvid Rinaldo, market communications manager for Volvo, said the earthmoving industry faces many challenges surrounding the installation of new Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB engines. He said one of the main challenges will be integrating the Tier 4 Interim technology into the machines so that the end user doesn’t notice it, while also ensuring machine productivity isn’t compromised. “The other focus must be to make the new technology as trouble-free as possible for the customers because we don’t want to give them something that will prove problematic.” he added. Manufacturers will face some installation issues when it comes to fitting the new engines because he said there are many new components that have to be included in the earthmoving The engine in the new Case 650L crawler dozer is equipped with electronic fuel injection for maximum fuel efficiency. december 2009 internationalconstruction 41 ICON 1209 Earthmoving.indd 41 26/11/2009 10:59:51 EARTHMOVING Efficient earthmovers The new Komatsu D375A-6 crawler dozer features reduced fuel consumption due to the automatic transmission with lockup torque converter. “The industry explained to the Commission that most of us (manufacturers) have 200 or 300 models and each one of those needs to be re-engineered in order to put in a new engine. However, I don’t think the size of that task was understood and it’s partly because we haven’t done a great job in making the Commission aware of it – we tend to just follow on from cars and trucks – we come third.” Market view Emerging markets providing growth opportunities for JCB uture growth opportunities for JCB’s earthmoving equipment will come from the Indian, Chinese and Brazilian markets according to David Bell, the company’s managing director for sales. Mr Bell said, “Our position in India is very solid and the Indian market is doing well and they are a nation that will be investing in infrastructure. We are well positioned there with our heavy products plant so I think that’s clearly a market that is doing well and will do well in future.” Latin America and Brazil in particular is also performing well for the company, Mr Bell added. “Whereas before it has been a very turbulent market it now has a more solid base for sustained growth. I think oil is probably the main driver there and what I find is that when nations become optimistic it filters right down so that everyone becomes optimistic and certainly in Brazil you get that feeling,” he told iC. He added China is also strong and is the only market that has shown actual growth in 2009. However Mr Bell said Russia hasn’t really shown any signs of improvement but the oilbased economies, such as the Middle East should return to health in the next couple of years. F Mr Bell added the time scale for meeting the next stage of emissions regulations is tight but despite difficult economic conditions and extra pressure on research and development budgets manufacturers have no choice but to comply with legislative requirements. He said, “Whereas we could be spending our research money looking at genuine innovation a lot of it is consumed with just meeting legislation,” he told iC. Fuelling ideas While meeting the next stage of emissions regulations is at the forefront of new product development within the earthmoving industry, the drive towards making more fuel efficient machines is becoming increasing important. Mr Rinaldo told iC one of the company’s main focuses is looking at how to make the most out of every single drop of fuel. “This is something that we are really focused on and of course continuing to maintain the high quality of the machines is something we are constantly improving and working on as well,” he said. Alternative fuel is another area the company is investigating although he added reaching a decision on a global scale about which path to take will probably take some time. “So in the meantime Volvo is trying extremely hard to further emphasise its push on fuel efficiency because that’s where we can really make a difference,” Mr Rinaldo added. He said another major area of investigation for Volvo is centred on increasing machine automation, which in some cases can also help improve fuel efficiency. Elsewhere, Mr Bell said, “There is no question that efficiency will be a driver and whereas before you saw horsepower being 42 internationalconstruction december 2009 ICON 1209 Earthmoving.indd 42 26/11/2009 11:00:52 EARTHMOVING Efficient earthmovers Excavator introductions Flexible machines with enhanced stability radall has introduced the 18 tonne XL 3200 III crawler excavator to its new Series 3 line up. Komatsu launched the world’s first hybrid excavator in its home market of Japan last year and now the company has extended availability to China, and is ramping up production accordingly. Following the introduction to China, the company also plans to make the model available in the US in the first half of 2010. Volvo, which has also entered into the arena of hybrid technology with its L220F wheeled loader, continues to have “great faith” in following this path, > Caterpillar’s D7E uses an electric drive system which offers increased productivity and lower lifecycle service costs than conventionally designed crawler dozers of equal weight and horsepower. Now the company has extended availability to China, and is ramping up production accordingly. Komatsu now has the capacity to build 100 20 tonne class PC200-8 Hybrids per month following a JPY 1.66 billion (US$ 18.6 million) investment programme at its Shonan Plant in Kiratsuka, Japan, where the excavators are assembled. Following the introduction to China, the company also plans to make the model available in the US in the first half of 2010. The company chose China as the next market for the hybrid after Japan because of its size – it is the largest excavator market in the world – and growth potential. Another factor is that utilisation rates for excavators in China are among the highest in the world, so the pay-back for customers from fuel savings will come quicker because the machines are used for more hours per day. J K Tech has introduced the 1254 scraper which is designed to be pulled with a more than 36 tonne, six-wheel drive articulated dump truck (ADT). according to Mr Rinaldo. “We see it as a major part of our efforts into making even more fuel efficient vehicles,” he said. Meanwhile, Mr Bell told iC the real drive within the industry will be improving the overall efficiency of existing machines rather than introducing new hybrid models. He added, “There will be some hybrid machines but most of all people will be trying to improve efficiency through using things like our torque lock.” He added certain earthmoving machines are suited to hybrid technology while others, like excavators, already run efficiently all day. A spokesman for John Deere said research and development into electrification and hybrid solutions for construction 44 internationalconstruction december 2009 ICON 1209 Earthmoving.indd 44 26/11/2009 11:01:20 EARTHMOVING Efficient earthmovers equipment is being driven by emissions regulations and also by the need for increased fuel economy, noise suppression and lower life cycle costs. The spokesman said, “Deere is already heavily involved in electrification research, but will not rush a construction product for publicity’s sake – it has to be right.” reduced due to the automatic transmission with lockup torque converter. Meanwhile, in the US, Case has introduced its 650L crawler dozer which delivers 55 kW through a Tier 3 certified, fourcylinder, 4.5 litre turbocharged engine which features electronic fuel injection for maximum fuel efficiency. A spokesman for Case said a high-pressure common-rail injection system delivers > Dozer deluge Manufacturers have introduced a number of new dozers in the past year many of which use less fuel. Caterpillar’s D7E which uses an electric drive system delivers +10% to +30 % greater fuel economy the company said. “The D7E meets the increasing demand for powerful, manoeuvrable, fuel-efficient dozers that have the versatility to work effectively in both production dozing and fine grading applications,” a spokesman for Caterpillar said. The overall efficiency of the new D7E stems from its ability to deliver enhanced engine power to the ground, the company explained. This means the D7E can use a smaller engine than comparable competitor machines, yet it can outperform them, Caterpillar said. In addition, the engine runs in a narrow 1500 to 1800 rpm speed range which further reduces fuel consumption and extends engine life. “In an age of increasing environmental awareness and regulation, the diesel-electric hybrid technology of the D7E offers unprecedented sustainability benefits. It is designed to burn considerably less fuel and consume fewer fluids and parts for reduced owning and operating costs. “Improved productivity and efficiency means getting more work done, while consuming fewer resources,” the spokesman said. Also offering improved productivity, lower fuel consumption as well as increased reliability is the new 49 tonne WD600-6 wheeled dozer from Komatsu. The new machine is powered by a Komatsu Tier 3, SAA6D170E-5 six-cylinder engine which is equipped with an electronic control system to optimise performance. It is also fitted with a heavy-duty high pressure common rail fuel injection system, a new combustion system for reduced noise and fuel consumption and a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system. The WD600-6 features dual-mode engine power, with economy mode for maximum fuel efficiency and power mode for maximum productivity. A new, large capacity torque converter with lock-up transmission provides increased productivity, faster cycle times and improved fuel consumption, the company said. Komatsu has also launched the D375A-6 crawler dozer which features a number of enhancements for even greater productivity. The Tier 3, fuel efficient dozer delivers 474 kW at 1800 rpm and according to the company fuel consumption has been New ADTs Series II models feature fuel-saving devices ohn Deere has introduced four new Series II articulated dump trucks (ADTs) in the shape of the 250 D, 300 D, 350 D and 400 D. The new models feature onboard weighing systems, tyre pressure monitoring systems, and a host of control and cab changes designed to enhance comfort and productivity. The six-wheel-drive models, which provide powerful traction in demanding conditions, are designed for maximum productivity, increased uptime and low operating costs. John Chesterman, John Deere’s product marketing manager for ADTs said, “Because John Deere ADTs already have a significant weight advantage and the lowest ground pressure among the top five ADT manufacturers, Deere trucks burn less fuel, particularly in high timeon-grade applications and poor underfoot conditions.” To help owners reduce costs, the Series II ADTs have auto-shutdown timers to save fuel, reduce noise and minimise engine use during periods of downtime. Outlook With the deadline for compliance looming earthmoving equipment manufacturers are undoubtedly prioritising engine emissions regulations in their product development strategies. However they are also increasingly focused on meeting the contractors’ demands for more fuel efficient machines. The next opportunity to see new fuel-related technologies and developments within the earthmoving sector will of course be at Bauma in April next year, however, whether manufacturers choose to preview their Tier 4 Interim machines at the event remains to be seen. Mr Rinaldo said, “We are facing an extremely interesting future when it comes to the development of earthmoving equipment because I think there are a lot of improvements to be made in how the machines are put together, how they are best operated and how they use the latest technologies. I think we are going to see a lot of new exciting developments within this industry and we at Volvo have a number of interesting technologies coming up.” iC Caterpillar’s 613G wheeled tractor scraper has a 8.4 m³ heaped capacity and can load material +13% faster than its predecessor. Becca Wilkins reports. ore than 200 customers and dealers had the chance to view and test-drive new equipment from Ditch Witch at an event held at the company’s International Underground Systems factory in Barcelona. Making their international debut on the day were the JT100 Mach 1, the largest Ditch Witch horizontal directional drill (HDD), the RT45 and RT80 ride-on trenchers, the RT10 and RT12 walk-behind trenchers and the PR 100 pipe bursting unit. The Tier 3/Stage IIIA compliant RT45, an upgrade of the company’s RT40 trencher, features improved air filtration and new easy-to-read gauges in the operator’s station. The RT45 has a range of attachments including a centreline or dualposition trencher, vibratory plough, rotary saw, combination trencher/ plough, and backhoe. Ditch Witch said the new quiet engine allows the machine to be operated in noise-sensitive urban areas and this also means working conditions are improved for the operator. The RT45 includes a spacious operator’s station, intuitive controls and easily accessible M service points. Meanwhile, the new RT80, a utility-based, fully hydrostatic trencher with a compact footprint and 62 kW turbocharged diesel engine replaces the company’s RT75 trencher. With a top speed of 15.9 km/hour it is the fastest trencher in its class and it offers four combinations of torque and speed, making it adaptable to different ground conditions, Ditch Witch said. The RT10 and the RT12 walk-behind trenchers feature fully hydrostatic steering for easy handling, and come with a choice of high-flotation tires “for outstanding traction and stability” or heavy-duty tracks that oscillate. Options available for both units include a pin-on backfill blade that efficiently restores the trench after the product is installed. Another option, primarily for contractors, is the Roto Witch, an attachment that enables the operator to bore under pavements, driveways, and other obstacles. Trenchless The new JT100 Mach 1 – the company’s most powerful horizontal directional drill (HDD) – is equipped with a 200 kW engine. The machine is designed so that rotation, thrust, and drilling fluid flow can operate simultaneously at full power, which leads to faster job completion. With 445 kN of pullback and 16270 Nm of torque, the JT100 is a directional drill built for both long-range bores, such as river crossings, and installations of largediameter pipe. According to Ditch Witch the power of the JT100 allows for the The RT45 trencher from Ditch Witch is one of the new products from the company. addition of two optional features that can save the contractor significant time and money. The first is an onboard crane, which is used to load and unload pipe boxes, anchor the unit, and handle downhole tools, especially drill pipe. Ditch Witch said directional drills without an onboard crane require additional equipment, such as an excavator, to perform these functions. The second optional feature is an onboard anchor system that stabilises the machine on virtually any terrain. The JT100 is equipped with a large-capacity 870 l/minute fluid pump and larger than average hoses and fittings to help move drilling fluid downhole faster, therefore increasing productivity. Meanwhile, the PR100 pipe bursting system is the newest and most powerful of the company’s pipe bursting systems, which are Ditch Witch representatives, Scott Smith, international sales manager, Shan Kirtley, director of sales and marketing and Joe Smith Jr, European sales manager pictured in front of the new JT100 Mach 1 HDD. used to fracture or cut any type of water, sewer, or utility pipe and pull in new pipe of equal or larger diameter. The PR100 offers more efficient hydraulics, reduced power pack noise output and 906 kN of pullback. Product focus The Ditch Witch factory in Barcelona supports its European, Middle East and African dealers and as well as being used for training purposes it also allows customers to view the full-line of Ditch Witch equipment. Joe Smith Jr, European sales manager for Ditch Witch said the difficult market conditions of the past year have not deterred Ditch Witch from introducing new products in 2009 – the company has in fact launched nine new machines this year. He added, “We could have pulled back and stopped design and testing and waited a year, but we wanted to continue because it’s our feeling that 2010 is going to be a positive year in the industry and when our customers start buying products to be able to handle the upturn we want them to have the best there is.” iC december 2009 internationalconstruction 55 ICON 1209 Equipment.indd 55 26/11/2009 11:09:36 EQUIPMENT Liugong Liugong’s largest loader The biggest loader made in China was unveiled at BICES, but the boom in the equipment market may be over. iugong used last month’s BICES exhibition in Beijing, China to launch its largest wheeled loader to date. The 899 III features a 391 kW Tier 3/Stage IIIA compliant engine, and with a bucket capacity of 6.4 m3 to 10 m3, it is the largest wheeled loader made in China. The machine has an operating weight of 48 tonnes. Despite being relatively unknown compared to the likes of Caterpillar, Komatsu and Volvo, the size of the Chinese market is such that Liugong is one of the world’s largest wheeled loader manufacturers. According to company president Zeng Guang’an, Liugong’s domestic market share has grown by +3% this year to 23%. He puts company global market share at 17%. The reason for this is the sheer size of the Chinese wheeled loader market. Data from Off-Highway L Research forecasts that the Chinese wheeled loader market will hit 125000 units this year – that is more than three times the demand of the rest of the world. But the steep growth that has driven demand in China may be coming to an end according to Mr Zeng. “The Chinese market is already too big – that’s my opinion. In the next two years I think the market will not be bad, but some products will come down,” he said. Commenting on the wheeled loader segment he added, “This year the wheeled loader market will be down at least -20%, and next year perhaps -5%. Our customers’ industries have changed, and that has affected demand.” In conclusion, Mr Zeng added, “The construction equipment population in China is more than 2 million, maybe 3 million. It’s huge.” iC DOWNLOAD THIS MAGAZINE NOW!
