WHOM DO WE MEET ON THE WAY OF FAITH?
EVANGELIZATION — POPE PAUL VI

The task of evangelizing all people is
the essential mission of the Church.

Evangelizing is in fact the grace and
vocation proper to the Church, her
deepest identity.

She exists in order to evangelize, that
is to say, in order to preach and teach,
to be the channel of the gift of grace, to
reconcile sinners with God, and to
perpetuate Christ’s sacrifice.
EVANGELIZATION AND CATECHESIS — POPE FRANCIS

“How many men and women, on the
existential peripheries…wait for our
closeness and our solidarity!”

New evangelization: “to become conscious
of the merciful love of the Father in order
that we may become pure instruments of
salvation for our brothers and sisters.”

“Catechesis…needs to go beyond the simple
realm of scholastics, in order to educate
believers…to encounter Christ, living and
working in his Church.”
Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New
Evangelization, plenary assembly, May 29, 2015
WHOM DO WE MEET ON THE WAY OF FAITH?
Jane (unbap.)
Jane; 24 year-old single mother with a two-year-old
 She thinks her life is awful and that she’s a bad mother;
she has little money to provide a good life for her son; has
to work several jobs to make ends meet; has no close
friends; her grandmother is helping her raise her child
 Had seen the news about Pope Francis saying that even if
you’re not married you can have your child be baptized;
she saw this as a way to provide a better life for her child
 She is unbaptized and looking for baptism for her child
 In the baptismal preparation for her child, the prep team
asked her five questions. Her reflection on those
questions led her to desire baptism for herself.

HONORING GOD’S VARIED FORMS OF GRACE
Jane (unbap.)
1. Feels abandoned; has some hope; grandma inspires faith;
wants better for child; school drop out; cautious about men;
broken family.
2. Tired, broke, confused, overwhelmed, desperate, angry,
struggling; wants baptism for child, self; felt moment of
peace; sees examples of faith
3. Wants better life for child; looking for meaning; community;
guidance, support, wants change, more involved with child
4. Will come to classes; will make change; bring child to
church; will make time; will ask for practical support
5. Child baptized, feel community, peace, wants to share her
peace, belonging, have support, brings worries to prayer,
know how to pray

Together, as a table group…
1. Choose one teaching for Jane:
we walk together as Body of Christ
Jane
(catechumen)
OR we are the image of God for others
2. Prepare catechetical activity
on this topic for Jane. Remember her:
•
•
responses to 5 questions
catechetical level: initiatory level
Use a strong parish activity:
•
•
•
•
#1: Word: faith-sharing in homes
#2: Community: grief ministry
#3: Worship: adoration
#4: Witness: Food for Friends
3. Choose a person to role play being
Jane to report to large group about her
experience
1. Feels abandoned; has some
hope; grandma inspires faith;
wants better for child; school
drop out; cautious about men;
broken family.
2. Tired, broke, confused,
overwhelmed, desperate, angry,

MYSTAGOGY
MYSTAGOGY
Together, as a table group…
1. *Draw a picture that shows:
• who participates in mystagogy
• what mystagogy is
• where mystagogy happens
• how you participate in mystagogy
*Look at the paragraphs in the Rite that
describe the period of mystagogy to help you.
Pay attention to what’s not in the Rite.
2. Find a table you like, and describe your
picture to them. Listen to their
description of their picture.
• How are your descriptions similar?
• How are they different?
If you had to start an RCIA team from
scratch, who do you need on your team?
