2009 - Colorado Youth At Risk
Transforming Lives 2009 Annual Report “If I can jump off a super high pole, then I can graduate from high school!” “The ropes course is memorable. Being afraid of heights, I had to climb up a super tall, scary pole then jump and reach for another pole that symbolized our goal (mine was to graduate high school). Jumping to graduation made me realize that anything is possible and I can achieve any goal I put my mind to. If I can jump off a super high pole, then I can graduate from high school!” Vanessa Quintana 2 Steps Ahead and Touchstone Youth High school graduate, class of 2009 “Take a risk” “Reach out and stretch yourself” “Take a step beyond your comfort zone” Letter from the Board These are very familiar phrases that our coaches and mentors say to the youth we work with. We realize that the youth will need to be brave, courageous and daring when they accept to be in our Steps Ahead and Touchstone programs. Our mentors are trained to understand that the youth won’t do what we say, but they will tend to do what we do. So, in a tough economic climate where Colorado Youth at Risk (CYAR) had a chance to expand our services, we had to stop and ask ourselves, “What would we tell our youth to do?” As a result, for the first time in the 16 year history of CYAR, we are spreading the impact that we make on youth beyond the boundaries of Denver. In 2009, we took the opportunity to expand our mentoring programs to the communities of Aurora, Elbert County and Logan County. This was possible through a grant we received from the Colorado Statewide Strategic Use Funds. We have learned a tremendous amount about how our program translates from the inner city to rural communities, what it takes to establish relationships in other counties, and the level of documentation it takes to disseminate our programs. We are extremely excited that everything we have learned from this expansion will lay the foundation for growth in the coming years. In addition to our Steps Ahead program, designed specifically for freshman, we provide ongoing support and mentors for the students’ sophomore through senior years with our Touchstone program. We enhanced our Touchstone curriculum this year and look forward to increased retention in the future. When youth stay in our Touchstone program through their senior year, 93% graduate as compared to only 52% of the students in Denver. Quite simply, our programs work. With the support of our Board of Directors, staff, generous donors and tireless volunteers, we were able to make 2009 a banner year. During a time when so many non-profits are struggling we are blessed to be thriving. Thank you all for your unwavering support. Patti Bennett Executive Director, Co-Founder Susan Meeske Chair of the Board of Directors 1 CYAR Mission Statement Colorado Youth at Risk empowers teenage students to make life choices that positively impact their future through community-based mentoring and intensive training. We aim to reduce the number of high school dropouts, match students with an adult mentor and provide students with a sense of the future and their place in that future. 2009 Recap History CYAR served 270 youth, which is a 59% increase over 2007. For the first time ever, we expanded our services beyond Denver into Logan, Elbert and Arapahoe Counties. This was possible due to receiving a contract from the Statewide Strategic Use funds. We hired a full-time Program Director to facilitate this expansion and a part-time Cultivation Manager to communicate with individual donors, cultivate corporations and to increase our presence in the community. Our Board of Directors is a dynamic leadership team actively guiding specific committees to help Colorado Youth at Risk sustain our current business model and effectively prepare for future expansion. 1994 Launched 1st program in conjunction with the Colorado National Guard. We are continuing to deliver quality programs in Manual and George Washington High Schools and now have four other schools requesting our services. Despite the current economic condition, we trust that expanding our services is more than possible with the continued generosity of those who recognize and support the quality and impact of our work. 1996 Worked with youth in the Emily Griffith Second Chance program as well as Denver Public Schools, such as Montebello, East, and CLA. 1998 Created partnership with PS1 Charter School and East High School with a focus on ninth grade students. 2000 Initiated a program at George Washington High School (GW) in addition to PS1 Charter School. 2002 Persevered through tough times after 9/11. 2004 Developed a partnership with Friends of Manual and Adventure Unlimited 100 Elk recreation camp outside of Buena Vista. Created an in-school group mentoring program at Manual High School in conjunction with other youth service providers. 2005 Started another Steps Ahead program at Manual and conducted the 2nd year of the in school group mentoring program. 2006 Continued to work with GW and started redesign of the Touchstone program. Manual closed. 2007 Changed leadership with Patti Bennett as new Executive Director. Manual re-opened and we began serving 9th grade students again in addition to continuing our partnership with youth at GW. 2008 Served the largest number of students to date and expanded the development of Touchstone. 2009 Received a grant to expand services to three new counties while still serving GW and Manual. 2 2010 Goals Launch our first Steps Ahead for Youth program at Aurora Central High School, increasing the number of youth we serve to 305. Continue to develop our committee structure, strengthening our fundraising, marketing and program committees. Increase our income by 10% over 2009. Graduate 30 students from high school, consistently achieving a 93% graduation rate for the youth in our Touchstone programs. Expand our Board of Directors by adding six new Board members. Hire a full time Development Director. Continue to be an active community partner agency by collaborating with the schools we serve: Manual, George Washington and Aurora Central High Schools, other non-profit agencies such as Challenge Denver and Byrne Urban Scholars, and with collaborative partners including the Youth Mentoring Collaborative, Community Shares, GivingFirst and our newest partner, Mile High United Way. We have 30 students graduating from high school this year for a 93% graduation rate! 3 Before I was a girl hiding behind my “hoodie” I was afraid to be me. My peers labeled me as a “Tom-boy.” When I tried to dress cute, like have my hair styled and nails manicured, I was harassed as being “fast.” I felt somewhat ashamed of being a female, so I didn’t ever want to appear as a girly girl anymore. I quickly became a rebellious teen who could care less about what others thought. When I’d stroll down the hallways, I’d always hide behind my hoodie. I didn’t really connect with others, especially adults. Manual High closed their doors so I was forced to go to North High School. I was harassed even more by kids at North and then my grades began to fall dramatically. I started fading away from everyone and didn’t see myself graduating high school. 4 When I was first introduced to Colorado Youth at Risk’s Steps Ahead program, I wasn’t into it at all. The program manager, Martha, was so persistent on me joining; she practically called me every day. I finally agreed to attend a meeting and decided to attend the launch course. The morning of going to the mountains, I wanted to back out but the staff persuaded me to pack my clothes and go. SUCCESS STORY After youth Now I’m a strong, confident woman in college I obtained so much knowledge and insight from the launch course. I was introduced to many new perspectives on life that I was unable to see before. I was able to “empty my cup” and get in touch with my emotions and ended up crying a river telling my life story to a bunch of strangers. I was also able to understand how the negative thoughts about myself were affecting my success in life. I created an everlasting family of support and bonded with people I never thought would be possible. Having completed the Steps Ahead program and becoming a member of Touchstone, I can now see my future is full of endless possibilities. No matter the circumstance, no matter what the obstacle, I know I can and will persevere through it. My past is nothing but the past. I live in the present, and dream of my wonderful future yet to come. I know I am a strong young woman that can endure anything thanks to the support of my wonderful CYAR family. Several mentors throughout the years held me accountable for my goals and actions and have helped to mold me to be the woman I am today. I am now a leader amongst my peers. I am a Daniels Fund Scholar and a proud member of the Dean’s List at Hastings College, majoring in Peace, Justice and Social Change. CYAR’s program has inspired me to carry on with my great work ethic and has allowed me to achieve remarkable things. Vanessa Quintana Steps Ahead and Touchstone Youth 5 SUCCESS STORY Before A woman not reaching her full potential due to lack of confidence I thought I was ‘broken’ and unable to be confident because of the things that happened to me in my past. I was told almost everyday of my childhood that I was stupid, and as an adult I often still believed it. I had a negative self-image when trying new things and when stepping out of my comfort zone. Even though I successfully raised two children and was happily married with a successful career, I was not very confident. This was especially true when I spoke in public and was faced with new challenges. 6 After mentor An inspired leader with self-confidence At CYAR we learn how to communicate and relate to each other without interference from our judgments. We learn how to be straight and real with one another and to be truly authentic. They set the stage called “safe space,” where everyone can share about their experiences and open their hearts to each other. Having a community of people who have my back and have supported me has been such an amazing gift. The first day that I went to pick up my new mentee, her Mom gently said, “Juli doesn’t need a mentor.” Just two months ago her mom said, “I’m so glad that you were Juli’s mentor!” I love Juli’s family values, her tender heart and her willingness to help others. Juli graduated in 2008 and has earned her certificate to be a CNA and is currently working in home healthcare. She and I have been through some difficult times together; the loss of my mom last summer and her sister in February. We have created a life-long friendship and I am so blessed to have her in my life! My other mentee, Vanessa, was a young woman who had some challenging circumstances in her life. Her new dedication to her education and being successful is just awesome. While doing homework and filling out applications for scholarships late into the night, we created a wonderful friendship that will last forever. The day that Vanessa graduated from high school, her little nieces were playing ‘go to college’ and pretending to get their diploma. It was then when I realized that CYAR is not only changing our immediate future, but generations to come. Vanessa earned the Daniels Fund Scholarship and is currently enrolled in Hastings College. She is so inspiring! I signed up to become a mentor and was surprised that the two young women I was paired with inspired and challenged me to grow and learn during some challenging circumstances in my life. I now am able to be more selfexpressed and make powerful choices in my life. I have revitalized all of my relationships in my life, but most of all I am at peace with who I am. I’m so inspired by both of these beautiful and amazing women and this organization. Since becoming a mentor, I have completed CYAR’s yearlong Leadership Training Program (LTP) and am now a certified facilitator. I actually get up and speak in front of people! This has been an incredible journey, and I am so grateful for this experience. Sue Kinney Mentor Before After “I can’t do anything right” “I can and will make a difference” “I hate everyone – even myself” “I’m a powerful person” “My teachers are out to get me” “I am a proud college student” “I think school sucks and is a waist of time” “I’m able to accomplish anything I want in life” “I don’t matter to anyone” “I matter to my mentor and to me” “I don’t care about anything” “I have dreams and goals” “I’m stupid and worthless” “I will graduate high school” “I’m unlovable” “I am unstoppable” “I am a mistake” “I am a leader amongst my peers” 7 2009 Financials 2009 Revenue (from Audited Financials) 2009 Expenses (from Audited Financials) In-Kind Contributions 45% Program Foundations / Grants Gov / Contracts 31% General & Administration Individual Contributions 17% Fundraising Special Events 6% Investment / Earned Income 1% 8 100% 83% 7% 10% 100% ASSETS 2008 2009 Current Assets Cash $148,210 Certificate of deposit 50,000 2,400 1,000 113,850 100,100 Grants receivable 21,604 Pledges receivable, current portion Deposits & prepaid expenses Total current assets 8,685 3,180 $308,784 $324,094 Accounts payable & accrued expenses $ 8,323 $ 7,446 116,150 101,100 $124,473 $108,546 253,000 174,727 188,239 221,095 – – 3,300 – Total net assets $191,539 $221,095 Total liabilities & net assets $569,012 $504,368 Deferred income, current portion Total current liabilities Long-Term Liabilities Deferred income, net of current portion Net Assets Unrestricted Property & Equipment Furniture & equipment 11,941 11,941 Less accumulated depreciation -4,613 -6,394 7,328 5,547 Net property & equipment 2009 Current Liabilities $183,849 Contributions receivable, current portion LIABILITIES & NET ASSETS 2008 Permanently restricted Temporarily restricted Other Assets Contributions receivable, net of current portion 2,810 2,060 250,090 172,667 Total other assets $252,900 $174,727 Total assets $569,012 $504,368 Pledges receivable, net of current portion 9 $250 – Donors $15,000 – $1,001 Yuko Aoyagi * Matt Bliss * Joan Brennan * Mike & Suzannah Brown * Carol Cameron Brian Conboy Mike Katz * Ross & Susan Kinney Christopher Leach Dan McMahon * Susan Meeske & Brady Rhodes * Grant Merrill * Cindy Napier Rebecca Newson * Fred & Barb Pyle * Bob & Sandra Rhodes Tarek Saad Elwyn Schaefer David Williams * Scott Wolf * Scott & Amy Zirbel * $1,000 – $501 David Afraimi Keith Ambuhl * Mike & Marcia Anziano Natasha Badillo Thomas Benigni Patti Bennett & Dave Luker Jody Blomberg Robert & Julie Bogdan Barbara Brooks Michael Delzer * Kevin Duncan * *Bold Leaders 10 Todd Egan Brett Ford * Rodney Franklin Sandi Ghaffari Mark & Marsha Giordano * Doris Gray * Doug Haeussner * Doug Hargrave & Nina Wang Chris & Sarah Hunt * Jeremy Jackson Chris Jacobson * Anne Kern * Michelle Klein Daniel Klowden * Cheryl Ann Ladd * Jon & Lori Lantz Rachel Lovejoy Chris Lynn * Bronwyn Pepple Alec & Riley Rhodes * Bob Rhodes Liz Richards Hanna Steplewska * James Tomonto Michelle Tuttle * Claudia Van Orden * Lucy Vento * Jeff Webb * Lyle Williamson Kathryn Wilson * Bryan Wright * Karen Yablonski-Toll * Tom Zeiler Melissa Zeligman * $500 – $251 Shelly Anderson Scott Beach Eric Burger Patricia Coan Linda Diefendorf Keith & Nicola Dudek Craig Evans Josh Farmer Ronnie Galang Matt Hammel Christian & Katie Hendrickson Robert Hickler Rachel Hultin Kevin Ladd * Laura Love * Jan Marquardt Maureen McNamara Rick Meyer * Bob & Dianne Overstreet Kelsi Page Eric Pollart Jon Roberts * Antonio Ruiz Len Silverston Kelly Smith Charlotte Sweeney Rod Valdez Christiaan Vandenberg Cary Weatherford * Susan Lynn Aberbook Rick Acosta Marlene Adam Paul & Rachel Adkins Diane Akins Kristi Allen Devra Altman RobertAndrew Mary Ashley Angelo Nabeel & Sania Anwar Roger Armstrong Cherie August Nickolo & Chris Badd Joe & Tanya Badillo Barbara Baldock David & Elizabeth Barela Ramon Bargas Gary Barnes Stephen Basch John Becker Deanna Beckett-Geldens Olivia Bell Bonnie Benda Paul Benigni Steven Berg Brian Bergevin Cathy Berry Christian Beyer Jenna Billingsley Robert Bishopp Lee Bley Joan Bloom Stephanie Bodilis Clark Bouton & Denny McGihon Gene & Elaine Boyer Mary Jane Bradbury Tony & Erin Bradley James & Cindie Braun C.L Brekke Deborah Brennan Lon Breslow Alyssa Broker Erica Brooks Christine Brown Donald & Anita Brown Jaynee Brown Lisa Brown Meghan Bruner David Burros Amy Van Bever Burtaine Laurel Burton Steffan Busch Wes Butero Stacie Byers Melissa Cadogan Damien & Kathy Cain Roger & Susan Carollo Amy Carr Alfonzo Carson D.R. The transition period from 8th to 9th grade is an especially critical time for youth. Many experience a decline in grades and attendance, they view themselves more negatively, and experience an increased need for friendships. In the Denver Public School system these issues take a toll on youth – 64% of the youth who drop out will do so before they reach 10th grade. Overall, about 24% of Colorado students do not complete high school and this number is much higher for minority and low-income students. State leaders have widely acknowledged the dropout crisis and supported programs designed to combat it. Programs like CYAR have gained traction reducing the overall state dropout rate from 37% just five years ago to 24% today. Denver, however, continues to experience a 52% dropout rate and minority students continue to struggle with some drop out rates as high as 67%. Studies show that students who drop out of high school cost society an average of $200,000 over their lives as they access needed services through the social services system. 15 Colorado Youth at Risk PO Box 13410 Denver, CO 80201 303.623.9140 www.coyar.org
