We couldn’t do it without you. While growing up in any circumstance presents its own set of challenges, growing up without a parent or mentor presents overwhelming hurdles that can lead to lifelong struggles and pain. Each time Big Brothers Big Sisters pairs a child with a mentor, we start something big: a one-to-one relationship built on trust and friendship that changes children’s lives for the better, forever. Gloria Lewis, President & CEO 2011 was an outstanding year for our organization! Our continuing, unwavering emphasis upon education is reflected in the year’s results: 70% of our Littles improved their academic performance and our high school seniors graduated at a 40% higher rate than the state average based on the demographics of youth in our program. In addition, our Education and Enrichment Program has now helped send 177 students to college. Seventeen of our students were awarded Annexstad Scholarships in 2011 allowing them to attend a four year university. Our first Annexstad Scholar graduated from college and is now pursuing a Masters Degree at DePaul University. Beth LeBreche, President, Board of Directors For the year, our mentoring programs served 2,950 Little Brothers and Sisters. And our 3,400 volunteers – including board and committee members, interns, AmeriCorps members, Everyday Advocates, and volunteer mentors – contributed 112,425 hours. Last but not least, our Board of Directors continues to guide our efforts ensuring Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities remains focused on its mission and functions as a highly effective, fiscally responsible and transparent organization. The articles and figures in our 2011 Annual Report share some of our most significant accomplishments for the past fiscal year. We invite you to share them with others and spread the message of hope we are imparting to children and youth. Thank you for all the gifts you give throughout the year—including your time, talent and financial support. Warm Regards, Gloria Lewis, President & CEO Beth LeBreche President, Board of Directors Start Something ™ BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE GREATER TWIN CITIES :: 2011 ANNUAL REPORT > 3 “We like inventing games, working on my instruction book, playing board games and drawing.” –Angel, age 10 Angel & Carlos MATCH PROFILE LITTLE BROTHER: Angel, age 10 BIG BROTHER: Carlos, College Student HE’S A LITTLE BROTHER BECAUSE: HE’S A BIG BROTHER BECAUSE: His father lives in Mexico, which caused his mother, Yolanda, to enroll Angel in Big Brothers Big Sisters. Angel’s cousins were in the program. “We noticed it was good for them, so we wanted to try it.” “I always wanted an older brother. I had a rough adolescence because I didn’t have guidance. Now I can make a difference in someone’s life. It’s like paying it forward in a different way. Even though it wasn’t done for me, I would like to do it for someone else.” ABOUT HIS BIG BROTHER: “The thing that I like most about Carlos is he is CREATIVE! He is nice, very smart and helpful with homework.” ABOUT HIS LITTLE BROTHER: “Angel gets along with everyone. His biggest strength is that he is good with new ideas.” THE MATCH : In addition to homework, Angel and Carlos invent all sorts of games during their time together. They have taken this creativity to the next level by writing and illustrating a book of their favorite games. This shared creative strength has been the foundation for their long-lasting mentoring relationship. Angel and his Big Brother, Carlos Espinosa, have been matched for three years and were named the School Based Match of the Year for 2011. “Angel enjoys the company of his Big Brother and help with his homework. I recommend the program because Big Brothers Big Sisters helps kids get smarter and provides good role models.” 4 –Angel’s mother WWW.BIGSTWINCITIES.ORG Kayliana & Louise MATCH PROFILE LITTLE SISTER: Kayliana, age 9 BIG SISTER: Louise, Program Director SHE’S A LITTLE SISTER BECAUSE: SHE’S A BIG SISTER BECAUSE: Kayliana lives with her grandparents and sister. Over a year ago staff at Kayliana’s school approached her family to see if she would be interested in enrolling in Big Brothers Big Sisters. Kayliana’s grandmother decided that “it would be good for Kayliana to have a positive role model.” “Being a Big Sister is fun for me, and it’s made me a better person. I see the power of mentoring. It is a traditional practice in the Native American community. We know that it works.” ABOUT HER BIG SISTER: “We’re both Native American and we both like cats! I know she likes me because she smiles and shows me pictures of her family.” “I hope that this school year we can teach each other to do new math lessons or Ojibwe speaking. I’d also like to teach Louise to knit.” –Kayliana, age 9 ABOUT HER LITTLE SISTER: “Kayliana is personality plus – very friendly and enthusiastic. She is also very bright. She has a great vocabulary and loves to read. She loves to play games, do crafts, and play outside.” THE MATCH : Kayliana and her Big Sister, Louise, are approaching the one year anniversary of their match. The two have found a common bond through their Native American heritage that has resulted in a meaningful mentoring relationship. Louise Matson is a 2011 inductee to Mpls.St. Paul Magazine’s Volunteer Hall of Fame. She has been a Big Sister to three Little Sisters over the past nine years and was a Big Sister of the Year in 2003. “Ever since Kayliana has been involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters she jumps out of bed and is ready to go to school every day. Last year, she had perfect attendance in school and got a plaque of recognition.” –Kayliana’s grandmother BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE GREATER TWIN CITIES :: 2011 ANNUAL REPORT 5 “Bob is a caring person who wants to help people move in the right direction.” –Antwan, age 18 Antwan & Bob MATCH PROFILE LITTLE BROTHER: Antwan, age 18 HE’S A LITTLE BROTHER BECAUSE: BIG BROTHER: Bob, Vice President of Sales HE’S A BIG BROTHER BECAUSE: “Bob gives me advice and pushes me to make better decisions, like deciding to go to college.” “I needed something more in my life. BBBS made the process very easy.” ABOUT HIS BIG BROTHER: ABOUT HIS LITTLE BROTHER: “Bob is a caring person who wants to help people move in the right direction.” “Antwan made the decision and took action to change his life. Being part of that is priceless.” THE MATCH : Bob and Antwan have been a match for nine years. They enjoy a wide range of activities from the pure fun of laser tag to the serious (but also fun) work of participating in the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Youth Leadership Council. In spring of 2012, Antwan will graduate from high school and enter college in the fall. Bob Oliker was so inspired by his experience as a Big Brother that he joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities’ Board of Directors. He serves on two committees and is the Board Secretary. “Antwan started to believe he could go to college when he attended the BBBS Annual Meeting. He then attended a number of Education and Enrichment college workshops and went on a Bigs Brothers Big Sisters trip to Atlanta to visit five colleges. All of that was huge. I am proud to say that he has enrolled in North Hennepin Community College.” –Bob Oliker Start Something ™ 6 > WWW.BIGSTWINCITIES.ORG 2011 PROGRAM SUMMARY Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities serves its mission through a wide variety of programs and services designed “to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.” Our core programs and services include: Community-based Mentoring Program Matches spend time together two to four times each month (for a minimum of four to eight hours each month) engaging in a variety of activities such as sports-related outings and recreation; educational or community service sessions; or artistic or crafts exploration. 2011 BY THE NUMBERS Site-based Mentoring Program TOTAL MATCHES Matches spend time together for a minimum of at least one hour every week during the school year at one of our 22 metropolitan partner schools (or in another BBBS/school arranged supervised setting), engaging in a variety of activities—working on homework or playing board game or on the computer—that build and nurture a relationship. Big Brothers Big Sisters has developed the following special focus initiatives, most of which are open to participants in our Site- and Community-based programs and intended to support all children in reaching their potential. Education & Enrichment To encourage high school graduation, career exploration, and promote postsecondary educational opportunities, we offer in-depth, interactive visits to corporations and nonprofits; career fairs; community service and leadership opportunities; one-to-one and workshopbased assistance supporting college applications, financial aid, and scholarship search and access process; and visits to two-and four-year institutions. Wellness for Life This initiative, focuses on linking youth, their families, and mentors to education and activities that support health and wellness. Program goals include 1) model healthy eating through education and healthier food choices at BBBS events and activities; 2) encourage physical activity by offering no/low-cost fitness activities; 3) facilitate access to community health and wellness resources and provide wellness education sessions; and 4) use the mentoring relationship to reinforce positive health behaviors. Mentoring Children of Prisoners Approximately 15,000 Minnesota children have a parent or significant family member incarcerated. Through no fault of their own, these children face many negative impacts that may lead to an increased likelihood of substance abuse, school truancy, criminal activities and violent behaviors. We are a national leader in providing and supporting mentors who can help mitigate these negative consequences. Beyond School Walls Big Brothers Big Sisters newest mentoring model, Beyond School Walls is a Site-based mentoring program conducted in partnership with selected area corporations. Carlson Companies and Comcast are our inaugural partners, bringing students from Minneapolis’ KIPP Stand Academy to their corporate headquarters for mentoring activities. General Mills is the most recent corporation to join this effort, with a Beyond School Walls program that will launch in Fall 2012. 2950 794 NEW MATCHES MADE YOUTH DEVELOPMENT OUTCOMES AMONG LITTLES IN 2011 70% IMPROVED THEIR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 67% IMPROVED THEIR ATTITUDE TOWARDS SCHOOL 85% IMPROVED IN SELF CONFIDENCE 81% IMPROVED THEIR ABILITY TO SHOW TRUST Focused Multicultural Mentoring and Outreach To ensure that we provide high quality, diverse, and linguistically appropriate mentoring services to all youth in our programs, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities is focused on increasing both the number of youth and number of volunteer mentors from Hispanic/Latino, Native American, Hmong, African-American, and African-born populations. Start Something ™ BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF THE GREATER TWIN CITIES :: 2011 ANNUAL REPORT > 15 2550 University Ave. W. Suite 410N St. Paul, MN 55114 Big Brothers Big Sisters’ vision is that all children achieve success in life. www.bigstwincities.org For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has operated under the belief that inherent in every child is the ability to succeed and thrive in life. As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. © 2012 Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities. All Rights Reserved.
