Hello everyone and welcome to Spring.
First let me apologize to Gary MacCauley, our newsletter editor for
my usual late arrival of my column. Gary likes to get this out on the first
of each month and yes, I am holding up the process as usual. Sorry Gary.
February was another fun month of flying, our highlight being February
2nd, when we had 30 scouts with us. For two hours we had each scout
and then each parent managing the dual control transmitter for a short
flight. At the conclusion we presented a short air show for them. The
rest of their day was spent experiencing all parts of the University.
Our February student “Come Fly with Us” was more like come play in
the snow with us. We still had nine students who braved the cold and
had a good time. At least I hope they did.
For our next meeting, scheduled for Tuesday March 5th will have a
super program presented my our own Vice President Dave Domzalski.
Dave has the greatest imagination and talents, so I know you will enjoy
his presentation. We will also be voting to change one of our rules, that
being able to fly by your self if you so desire.
A special thank you to Gary Swigart and Walter Wilken for all of their
work dragging and rolling the field. A thank you to John Conrad for
preparing the field each morning.
I’m told that SPRING is on it’s way so come on out and have some
fun.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING

Well, it’s the “funny weather” time of the year.
Sunny, warm then snows, windy and cold. When
it is nice, it’s been very nice with light winds and
decent temps. Walt and Gary have done a nice
job keeping the runway in great shape and El
presidente has done a fine job interfacing and
networking with school officials and students,
thus keeping us in good graces with our “landlord”.
We’ve been operating pretty safely but with
more people flying on a regular basis than have
in quite a while, we want to be aware that there
might be 3 others in the air at the same time we
are. Keep in mind flight courtesy by announcing
your intentions, especially taking off and landing.
If someone is landing, try to stay away from their
approach. Landings can be nerve-racking
enough without having traffic near by. Aerobatics
should be performed on the far side of the
runway, leaving area above the runway for fly-by
and take-off or landing passes. Crisscross flying
over the runway with other traffic not only
involves flying towards the pits but also invites a
possible collision.
We’re going to be voting on the “solo flying”
rule this meeting and proponents have thoroughly
researched the AMA rules and legality of this to
the satisfaction of your safety officer. I feel there
are many members that can fly solo safely and
there may be some who should not. I should hope
that anyone with a known health issue would use
common sense. I should hate to use circling birds
to locate a missing member who went looking for
a downed plane! Perhaps having a cell phone on

President Jack Hardy called the meeting to
order at 7 pm with the Pledge of Allegiance by the
club members and opened the meeting with a
short video slide show of the members and their
airplanes.
Vice President’s Report (Dave Domsalski):
Dave reminded everyone of the Sweetheart
Dinner Thursday evening, February 14, 2013 at
the Lone Spur Cafe. So far 42 people have signed
up. Dave has a sign up sheet. If you are
interested let Dave know at the field or give him
a call at 237-9093. Dave announced that
Saturday, September 28th has been reserved for
the Annual Boat Float/Picnic at Goldwater Lake.
Secretary’s Report (Gary Swigart):
We
have 56 members who have renewed.
Treasurer’s Report (Dave Marston): Dave
reported we have $3300 in the account.
Safety Report (Tom Gatchell):
No
significant incidents to report. Charlie Bock talked
about his lipo battery incident with his Electric
Bi-Plane.
Flight Instructor’s Report (John Conrad):
John has three students. However the student
flying is slow due to the cold weather.
President’s Report (Jack Hardy): Jack
thanked everyone who participated in last
Saturdays’ (Feb 2nd) Boy Scout Orientation
Program at the field. We had approximately 30
scouts and adults at the field.

Jack thanked Walter Wilken for dragging and
rolling the field.
Jack announced the university has requested
the club put on a flying demo four different
afternoons during June and July to support
ERAU’s Summer Orientation Program for high
school students. More info to follow.
The members voted (24 yes, 0 no) to eliminate
the requirement to use the Freq Board and Pins
for those members using radios with 2.4Ghz.
Jack announced that at the March meeting the
members will vote to either eliminate or keep the
current requirement of no solitary flying.
Jack mentioned hats and t-shirts are available,
with the club’s logo, on line. Check the Flite Lines.
Show and Tell:
Vince Herod showed his recently purchased
giant scale Piper Cub. It has 50cc gas engine.
Gary Swigart showed his scratch built 40 size
glow sport plane.
Dave Domzalski showed his A-1 Electric
Skyraider. Dave also put on a short flight demo
of a mini quadcopter.
Other Business:
Cinnimon Bandy mentioned that the local Big
Brother/Big Sisters organization is looking for
adults to act as big brothers for young boys.
Meeting adjourned at 8:05 pm.
