Now researchers have discovered that singing also helps those with dementia. In a study from the University of Helsinki, 89 pairs of patients (with mild to moderate dementia) plus their caregivers were assigned for 10 weeks to one of three groups: listening to music, singing or only standard care. After nine months, patients were assessed, and researchers found better memory function, focusing, planning, multi-tasking, orientation and mood in the groups that participated in music. The results weren’t the same, though. The biggest benefit for memory and orientation came from the singing group, especially those with mild dementia. In patients with more severe dementia, it was listening to familiar music that provided cognitive benefits. Researchers suggested that in early, mild dementia, singing could help maintain memory. In both groups, music helped alleviate depression, especially those with mild Alzheimer’s disease. Music as a therapy for Alzheimer’s isn’t new. In 1989, researchers in Colorado conducted a small study to determine if music had any impact on patient physical and social behavior. Specifically, they wanted to encourage conversation. The results showed that those who participated in group singing had higher vocal and verbal behaviors than those who were in the discussiononly group. In a recent study in Israel, researchers wanted to encourage conversation in mostly nonverbal patients with middle to late Alzheimer’s by using familiar songs. Songs were carefully chosen with behaviors noted after each one. The result was that songs related to their social and national identity brought out memories and much subsequent conversation. Afterward the participants had a feeling of accomplishment and belonging. Have you considered the benefits of joining a local choir or chorus? (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc. Tomlin St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Fort Plain has gone through some rough patches in the road over the past few years, with the retirement of the well-loved Rev. Kenneth Dingman, who had been with the congregation for over 35 years, and the moving away of many members; it has been a struggle financially for the small community church. But now, just in time for Christmas and the new year, Pastor Jonathan Litzner, has been called to the church. Along with the new pastor comes new ideas and a reaffirmation of old values. Church council members, including Vice-President Helen Calbet, see a new future for the church. “In addition to our ‘Just One More’ ministry and the ‘Shoebox’ ministry that we have every year, we have already taken on more new community outreach programs,” said Calbet. Two of these new ministries include “adopting” a local family (not part of the congregation) and delivering several boxes of food and appropriate gifts to them at Christmas. Another new outreach ministry is the ‘Mitten Tree’, inspired by a ministry at St. John’s-St. Mark’s in Canajoharie, which was begun by elementary teacher, the late Jimmie Pecora, many years ago. The winter hats, scarves, gloves and mittens collected will be donated to children at the Harry Hoag Elementary School. - Dog Food - Barn Dri - Gypsum Products SWAREY Bros. Aaron Swarey 315-868-8207 Fort Plain, NY Pastor Jonathan Litzner joins several members of St. Paul’s around the ‘Mitten Tree’, which is laden with winter hats and gloves to be donated to children at Fort Plain’s Harry Hoag Elementary School. Third grade teacher Mrs. Patricia Sweet spoke about receiving the donation of winter items. “We are really happy to receive these at Harry Hoag Elementary School,” said Sweet. “The children love to play outside and these hats and mittens will allow children that don’t already have them, to play outside with the other children.” Sweet explained that classes are unable to go outside unless all children are prepared and properly dressed. St. Paul’ members speak highly of the new pastor. “He’s already making a positive difference in our togetherness as a congregation,” said member/pianist Rachael Takacs. “His humility is inspiring and he shows compassion towards everyone.” Pr. Litzner, who is already visiting area shutins, was asked about the Mitten Tree and the adoption of the family in need. He commented, “Because Christmas is about a poor, homeless, refugee baby named Jesus, who had nothing; giving gifts to those in need is what Christmas is really all about.” Pr. Litzner and his wife, Pastor Sarah Litzner (Zion Cobleskill) reside in Cobleskill and have three children. To donate non-perishable items to St. Paul’s ‘One More Ministry’, contact Helen Calbet at 518993-4330. Include instructions on how you will handle your health concerns and how you will contact your family or care for your children when you are at work and an emergency occurs,” said Diane Ward, RN of Herkimer County Public Health. “Because many people spend most of their time each day at their job, it makes sense to be prepared and have a work place emergency plan that deals with your needs,” she said. Ms. Ward said nearly all workplaces have emergency plans for their employees. “It’s important to know what the plan is and how its affects you. Be familiar with that plan by participating in emergency drills and evacuations. That way, you will know what to do if a real emergency occurs. Also, let your employer know if you need special accommodations or assistance, such as walking down the stairwell during a building evacuation. These procedures can also be practiced during the drill,” she said. Your emergency workplace plan should work in conjunction with your employer’s plan. Your plan should include information on your health concerns, how you communicate with or locate your family if you become separated, and what provisions you need to make. Consider the following checklist as you develop your personal workplace plan. Evaluate your workplace: Know where there are safe places (e.g., in the stairwells, under heavy tables or desks, and corners of rooms away from windows) and dangerous places (e.g., near windows, and heavy furniture and equipment that may get knocked over) around your work area. Know the locations of fire extinguishers, first aid equipment, and fire alarms in your office, as well as any shared spaces. Post all emergency numbers in a location that is visible and accessible. Be familiar with your internal emergency broadcasting system. Be familiar with the name of the person and/or department who will give official instructions. Notify them if you have a disability that prevents you from seeing, hearing or understanding that emergency communication system. Know who are the floor wardens and other first aid attendants. If you will need assistance of any kind, let them know now, before an emergency occurs. Know the safe evacua- Real Estate Agent Patricia Edick 518-673-2820 Licensed Real Estate Broker Laurie Weingart 518-673-2820 tion routes from your work area. Contact your floor warden or security staff if you don’t know; if routes have not been established, or if you need assistance using these routes. Be aware of co-workers and your customers with special needs that might need your help. If you have a disability or will need assistance, know who can help you and plan ahead. Ask a person, or a group of people who you can rely on and trust, if they will be able to help you during an emergency. Make Personal Provisions: Arrange with your family to have an out-of-area telephone contact to help coordinate your family’s whereabouts. Familiarize yourself with your children’s daycare and/or school emergency plan and policies. Plan how your children will be cared for if your family is separated. Have emergency sup- plies available. Remember that power could be disrupted, water could be contaminated and phone lines could be damaged. Your emergency kit should be able to sustain you for at least 72 hours. Assemble a workplace emergency kit. Consider including: comfortable walking shoes; high-energy food bar; warm jacket; foil water pouches or bottled water; first aid sup- plies; medications; personal medical information; back-up durable equipment and spare eyeglasses; flashlight with fresh batteries, and a working AM/FM portable radio. Keep this kit in an easily accessible place. For more information on workplace emergency plans, call Herkimer County Public Health at 315-867-1610. This small unit, standing about 4 inches in height, would be fastened to a miner’s hardhat so the miner could see in the dark. This unit is divided into two chambers, an upper and a lower; the lamp works by adding calcium carbide to the lower chamber and water to the upper chamber. Acetylene gas is created as a byproduct of the chemical reaction. To light the gas, a striker flint is located on the front of the panface, near the gas hole. The lever turns to controls the flow of the drip. Subsequently, this lever also controls the intensity of the light. To shut off this unit, simply shut down the drip lever to halt the chemical reaction. Do you have your own Whatchamacallit? While many working men and women take one or two vacations per year, recreational vehicle owners can travel more often without breaking the bank. THIS WEEK’S SPECIAL!! 2005 DODGE MAGNUM R/T AWD Blue, 98K, Hemi V-8, Auto, Heated, Leather, Moonroof, Alloys, All Wheel Drive Recreational vehicles, or RVs, are often referred to as campers or motor homes. Equipped with many amenities, ranging from kitchens to multiple sleeping areas to entertainment spaces, RVs offer many of the comforts of home. The Recreational Vehicle Industry Association says RV ownership is currently at an all-time high. According to Dr. Richard Curtin, RV industry analyst and director of consumer surveys at the University of Michigan, 8.9 million households now own an RV. That’s up from 7.9 million in 2005. Drivers considering buying an RV may have many questions about these increasingly popular vehicles. RVs come in two main types: motorized and towable. Under- standing the differences between the two and the various subcategories of RV can help drivers make the most informed decisions when purchasing their RVs. Motorized Motorized RVs are broken down by class, including class A, B and C. The distinction between the classes of RV is based on size. • Class A: This class of motor home is very large and offers all of the comforts you’d expect from home. Slide-outs can expand the living area when parked, and full bathrooms, complete kitchens and more are the norm. Because of their size, class A RVs tend to be the most expensive and may be more vehicle than many people can afford. Their large size (many look like a bus on the road) can make them difficult to navigate for novices. • Class B: Class B RVs are often referred to as “van conversions.” Class B are the smallest, fully enclosed campers available in the motorized category. Living space is limited in these RVs, but economy and versatility make them quite popular. Usually these campers can sleep between two and four people. • Class C: Class C RVs are a compromise between types A and B. Class C are mid-sized with a driver’s compartment similar to a van and a larger box in the back for the living area. Some come with a sleeping bunk above the cab. Depending on the floor plan, class C campers can sleep up to 10 people. Towable Towable RVs are another option and can be more affordable because they can be pulled behind your existing vehicle. • Travel trailers: Travel trailers look similar to traditional motorized RVs but without the driving cab. They can be hitched to the back of a vehicle. Travel trailers are popular because of their versatility. Travel trailers can be ideal for those with limited budgets but the desire to have a self-contained unit. • Pop-up: Folding camping trailers, or popup trailers, are inexpensive and lightweight. They provide many of the conveniences found in a basic travel trailer but in a smaller size. • Fifth-wheel: If you own a pickup truck, a fifth-wheel trailer may be good for you. These hitch to the top of the pickup bed and have similar features to a traditional travel trailer. RVs make great investments for men and women who love the open road. They also are a great way to take the entire family on an affordable and memorable vacation. That may sound like a winter wonderland, but many motorists experienced breakdowns because they did not take preventative measures to make sure their vehicles were ready for the elements,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Taking the time now to have your vehicle checked will help you avoid getting stranded in sub-zero temperatures and facing a costly repair bill.” The non-profit Car Care Council recommends checking the following areas of your vehi- LET 3555 State Highway 5, Fonda, NY 12068 (518) 853-2143 • trackside1autos@gmail.com www.tracksideautos.com cle so it is road ready when severe winter weather strikes. • Check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries. • Check the antifreeze. As a general rule of thumb, clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling system every two years. • Check that heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly. Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather washer fluid. • Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure should be checked weekly. • Check the oil and filter and be diligent about changing them at recommended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter. Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a cold climate. • Check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. • Check engine performance before winter sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. • Check the brakes. The braking system is the vehicle’s most important safety item. • Check the exhaust system for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. • Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and headlights are properly aimed. During winter, drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. Motorists should also check the tire pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication. To learn more about winterizing your vehicle, view the council’s Car Care Minute video and visit www.carcare.org to order a free copy of the 80-page Car Care Guide.
