During this time of reflection, I think back to what a tremendous year B’nai Torah Congregation has had. Oprah Winfrey, in her publication, often ends with an article “What I Know for Sure” and that title always resonated with me. In reflecting upon this past year, here’s what I know for sure about B’nai Torah, and what it means to me personally, and to us as a community. What I know for sure: That B’nai Torah Congregation is a very important part of my life, and I am fortunate and honored to be your President. That we have some of the most talented and intelligent not to mention charismatic - clergy in the country, who have a vision that has sustained B’nai Torah by infusing both traditional teachings with new ideas and programming and continue to be forward thinking. That we are a very blessed congregation where we as individuals and families come together as a community to find spirituality and warmth. That we have staff at B’nai Torah who are extraordinary and whose creative brilliance, can-do spirit and ethical maturity are focused on a larger good that makes us all proud and me in particular. That we are a congregation that strives to make a difference in our lives, the lives of our fellow congregants and those we come into contact with whatever the circumstances. That we should always create a friendly and welcoming environment – one that members and potential members will remember and to which they will happily return time and time again. 4 That we have to be cognizant of those who walk through our doors who will forever remember their first encounter, be it good or bad. Everyone should be greeted and made to feel that they are an important part of our family. No one should be a stranger twice, and everyone should feel that a stranger is welcome here. That we need to cultivate the needs and desires of young families with children without neglecting the demographics that have been the central standard of our Jewish community. That we have to continue to provide excellent adult Jewish learning opportunities by providing classes that encourage adults to discover meaning in our religious texts. It is said that “Adult Learning at the synagogue should be the kind of life changing learning that helps us understand better who we are and where we want our lives to go”. That we as members need to get the word out that B’nai Torah Congregation is meaningful to our lives, and to who we are, where we are and what we have to offer our Jewish community. That I want to thank all of our volunteers for giving of themselves and realizing that this is a labor of love and for all of their hours committed, it is so very much appreciated. That the more you give – your time, your donations, your commitment – the more you get in return. That we have to treasure the memories and good experiences in our lives and to keep living in the moment and keep moving forward. That I wish you all joy and peace in your lives, and hope to see you at B’nai Torah often over the next several months. May your holiday season be as bright as the candles on the hanukkiah! CHAI www.bnai-torah.org The Lights of Hanukkah by Rabbi David Steinhardt W e all know the expression, “The lights are going out.” It might refer to one who is falling asleep or losing consciousness, but it’s also said about people going through the intellectual deficits that come with dementia, or the diminishing awareness that can come with aging. Aging is a huge issue in our society. Thankfully, we are seeing more and more people living well and productively into their nineties and beyond. We’re also seeing more people being kept alive through the wonders of modern medicine, but the quality of life is compromised as some are simply no longer functional. We live in the epicenter of aging. South Palm Beach County has a greater per capita population of people who are over eighty and ninety than any other area in the country; perhaps the world. This provides great challenges for families, for housing, for medical care, and on the social networks of our non-profits and governmental agencies. For us here at our synagogue, it provides both responsibilities and obligations to provide transportation, visitation and programming for the elderly. Personally, I have a heightened awareness of some of these issues because my wonderful mother is in a local facility living with advanced dementia. I visit and sit with her and her co-residents a number of times a week. I see their loneliness, and I see how incredibly appreciative they are for attention, visitors, and a touch. In my mom’s residence, there is musical performance almost daily. The residents come to life as they hear familiar music. But there is one thing that sparks their interest and moves their spirits even more than old music, and that is ritual. During Shabbat or holidays, when they participate in a service, say brachot, or light candles, they wake up as if they were young again. There is such great power in ritual. And there is such great fascination in the words, the melodies and the prayers of a tradition, and their familiarity and memories they evoke. WINTER 2015/16 Hanukkah captures this so beautifully. And it does so intergenerationally. We all love the lighting of the candles. They evoke not only our shared story as a people, but also our own stories as individuals. The elderly have much to teach us, but perhaps what they can teach us best is how to age. My subjective observation is that those who age with a connection to prayer, tradition and ritual have something that brings great comfort, joy and inspiration. And so, there’s a lot for us to do, and a lot for us to learn. By connecting our children and ourselves to ritual, we not only enrich life now, but bring joy and comfort in the future. In keeping with tradition, our TLC program has arranged for lighting the menorah at Stratford Court again this year. Please consider joining with your fellow congregants. Here is the schedule: Sunday, December 6 - Men’s Club Tuesday, December 8 - Mirochnick Religious School Wednesday, December 9 - Women’s League Thursday, December 10 - TLC Volunteers (all ages!) Friday, December 11 - Kids Care (for young children with an adult) Sunday, December 13 - Middle School & High School We will meet at Stratford Court at 3:30 p.m. on each day. Chag Urim Sameach! I wish you all a very Happy Hanukkah! Don’t let the lights go out! 5 Rabbi David Englander H anukkah is quintessentially a holiday of miracles. Whether it is the miracle of an early version of the Israeli army triumphing over a foe; the spiritual memory of oil that lasted for eight days; or the miracle of how days get shorter and shorter and then longer and longer insuring the continuation of the extraordinary cycle of nature, we praise God: sheh-asah nisim la’avoiteinu ba-yamim ha-hem, Who performed miracles for our ancestors in their time. Yet you know that is not the conclusion of the blessing! Instead it ends: u’vaz’man ha-zeh, and also in our time. So Hanukkah is a time to recognize not just the miracles of the past, but of the present. How do we define a miracle? That is a good question which has been asked through the generations. Our knee-jerk response is to say, you know, like in the movies, with seas parting and thunder clapping and voices from on-high. In other words, when natural law is suspended, God’s presence is revealed, and awe-inspiring things happen. Yet many in our tradition, while not denying the power of the grand godly gesture, see miracles “in our day” evidenced in God-inspired acts of transformation, goodness, and achievement in our world. In Jewish terms perhaps they include the establishment, growth and flourishing of the State of Israel; the release of millions of Russian Jews whose children are now Jewish Americans, Jewish Israelis, or Jewish Australians; the continued impact on the world of one of its smallest minority groups and more. Are “these” miracles much different than “those” miracles? I’m not so sure. Look closely enough at the “Hollywood” miracles and you’ll find people who were ready to partner in the mission they announced. Listen closely enough to the “human” miracles and you can hear the voice of God encouraging and inspiring. A miracle without someone to appreciate it and bless its occurrence is only an opportunity missed. This Hanukkah, we will not miss our chance to remember the miracles of the past, and to embrace and give thanks for those happening baz’man hazeh. Secure our Fu ure Rabbi Rikki Arad Executive Director I t seems hard to believe, but I am nearing my oneyear anniversary at B’nai Torah Congregation! On one hand, it feels like I am still so new and have so much yet to learn; on the other hand, it feels as if I have been here for years because of how “at home” I feel. As most of you know, if you were here with us during the High Holy Days, I was asked by Rabbi Steinhardt to give the Kol Nidre appeal. While I was truly honored, I was also a bit hesitant. Being so new, how I could I possibly be a credible source of information about the state of B’nai Torah and its needs? Well, as I stated during my message, while I may be new to B’nai Torah, I am definitely not new to synagogue and Jewish communal life, and I am able to give a fresh perspective on B’nai Torah. What we have here is a true synagogue for the future, and it’s our collective responsibility to ensure we maintain and perpetuate the B’nai Torah legacy. I am proud to report that our members were extremely generous this year, with one of the most successful Kol Nidre campaigns in our history! To those who WINTER 2015/16 gave - thank you! Because of your generosity and commitment, we will continue providing the best programming, most robust educational opportunities, and most meaningful worship experiences for people of all generations - all within a beautiful physical space. You will also help ensure that no one who wants to become a part of our community, or give themselves or their children a Jewish education but may not have the means to do so - will ever be turned away. This is sacred work. Enclosed is a list of all those who donated to Kol Nidre thus far. If your name isn’t on this list, and you would like it to be, please visit or call the Synagogue Office or you can make your pledge online at www. btcboca.org/kolnidre. As always, I am available to speak to you if you any questions, ideas or concerns about B’nai Torah, or if you are looking for a meaningful way to make a gift. Thank you for making my first year here at B’nai Torah so incredible. I look forward to working with all of you to continue our great work. 7 Thank you to the following members for supporting our Kol Nidre Appeal 5776 Ms. Rosalyn Abrams Ms. Jodi Adams Dr. & Mrs. Howard Adler Dr. Edward Alpert & Ms. Ida Zack Mr. & Mrs. Gary Altschul Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Altschul Mr. & Mrs. Marcos Amar Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Amiel Mr. & Mrs. Aaron Appelbaum Mr. Paul Appelbaum Dr. & Mrs. Richard Aronsohn Mr. & Mrs. Daniel Artzi Mr. & Mrs. Morris Artzi Mr. & Mrs. Yehuda Atias Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Attman Mr. & Mrs. Sidney Awerbuck Ms. Deborah Ayache Dr. & Mrs. Joshua Bailin Mr. & Mrs. Robert Bamdas Dr. & Mrs. Adam Barbag Dr. & Mrs. Harvey Barbag Mr. & Mrs. Neil Baritz Mr. & Mrs. Michael Baron Mr. & Mrs. Scott Becher Mr. Gary & Dr. Lisa Becker Mrs. Carole Behrman Mr. & Mrs. Mark Bender Mr. & Mrs. Michael Berezin Dr. & Mrs. Alan Berger Mrs. Gloria Berger Dr. Glenn Berger & Dr. Michelle Fiorillo Mr. & Mrs. Fred Berkowitz Mr. & Mrs. Jay Berkowitz Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Berman Mr. & Mrs. Edward Bernstein Dr. Mitchell Bernknopf Mr. & Mrs. Henri Bertuch Dr. Bert & Mrs. Carol Bez Dr. Theodore Bieber Mrs. Joy Binkovitz Mr. & Mrs. Richard Birdie Mr. & Mrs. Larry Birkner Drs. Most of you recognize me as “the woman from the choir who sings the Ladino Ein Keloheinu,” and yes, that’s true. But in the world outside of Shul, I am a licensed interior designer with a passion for Universal Design. What does that mean? It means that my work involves not only creating spaces that look beautiful, but that I put emphasis in their safety and accessibility. A big thank you to Anne and Norman Jacobson for their generosity in underwriting our Noah’s Ark Welcome Aboard Initiative again this year. The main focus of this program is to create a sense of community for our new members and help them become better acquainted at B’nai Torah Congregation. I was given an opportunity in this edition of the Chai to explore with you a topic that in one way or another pertain to all of us today: Aging in Place. Aging in place is defined as the ability to live in one’s own home and community safely, independently, and comfortably; regardless of age, income, or ability level. It sounds like a wonderful idea - and it can certainly be achieved - if you start taking steps towards that goal, no matter your age. (561) 392-856611 Cantor Udi Spielman As I play the game of life, I try to make it better each and every day. And when I struggle in the night, the magic of the music seems to light the way. - John Lennon (Intuition) O n December 20, 2013, the UN General Assembly proclaimed 2015 as the International Year of Light. For me, music is what lights the way. There is nothing like getting all the notes right; to sing the feelings within the notes, the light around them, the darkness behind them. When used correctly, music is the universal light that shines without need for language or words. As we head into Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights, it occurs to me that this year we have 8 “candles” to add to the worldwide celebration of lighting the world, and I feel like the Shamash. Each concert and theater performance sheds its own light on a different aspect of our Jewish musical tradition. I hope you will join us beginning January 20 for “A Cantor’s Life,” the fascinating life story of Cantor Meir Finkelstein from Bimah to Hollywood. We will have Chazzanim and Chazzanot, male and female voices celebrating Cantorial and popular music, and a special treat with Gòn Halevi, one of the brightest young lights coming from Israel today. Baladino will regale us with a spirited twist on Sephardic/Ladino music, and The King of Kosher Gospel will close out the season with a bang. In addition to these concerts, we will have two outstanding, award-winning theater productions, “Women’s Minyan” and “Bridge and Tunnel,’ directed by Shari Upbin. As I write this from Israel, I am a first-hand witness to the darkness that can live within people. As we go through these difficult times, I urge you to keep on shining your light, in any way you are able, to counteract the darkness that is in this world. B’Shalom. KOSHER GOSPEL BAND Soul and Neshama: Gospel at its Best American Divas of Chazzanut Jan 27 You may have never heard of “kosher gospel” music before, but the inspirational performance of Joshua Nelson, the creator of this style - along with his special guests and the B’nai Torah choir - will surely call out to your soul. Kosher gospel is the marriage of Jewish religious lyrics and meanings with the soulful sounds of American gospel music. Such soulinflected vocalizations filled the Black Hebrew synagogue Joshua Nelson attended as a child with his family, observant Jews who traced their lineage back to Senegal. The addition of a brass band for this performance will take this artform to a new and exciting place. Awe-inspiring soprano vocals sharing Cantorial and popular music. Featuring Cantor Arianne BTC Theater Arts Series Brown,Cantor Rebecca Garfein, Cantor Magda Fishman, and Musical Director Raymond Goldstein. Joshua Nelson Mar 30 The Prince of Kosher Gospel performs his original, spiritual, uplifting and soulful compositions. Joshua Nelson was inspired to become a gospel singer after he heard an album by gospel superstar Mahalia Jackson when he was just eight years old. Nelson combined Jewish liturgical lyrics with the soulful sounds of American gospel music, sparking a revolution in Jewish music. Hear “The Prince of Kosher Gospel” perform his original compositions with his band and a special brass section in this spiritual, uplifting concert. 3 WOMEN'STheaterFeb MINYAN Return of the Cantors Feb 10 Based on a true story of a haredi (ultra orthodox) woman, wife of a rabbi, mother of twelve, who leaves her family for unspecific reasons. The woman is punished and the community's 'modesty squad' prevents her from seeing her children. Desperate to regain access to her children, she determines that the women of the community must stand in judgement, hoping that once they hear her shocking story and the truth of why she left they will allow her to be reunited with her children. Women's Minyan ran for five years in Habima, Israel's national theater. Israel’s brightest Cantorial lights present a varied musical selection. Featuring Cantor Simon Coher, Cantor Yechezkel Klang, Cantor Raphael Frieder, and Musical Director Raymond Goldstein. (561) 392-8566 . www.bnai-torah.org 2016 B’nai Torah Congregation presents: The Ruth & Edward Taubman Early Childhood Center Making The World A Better Place M y favorite quote states “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.” - Aristotle Several years ago, we began a philanthropic initiative called Big Lessons For Little People. The idea sparked from the collaborative effort of a few teachers who were trying to come up with a solution to a “problem” in their classrooms - their students were preoccupied with super heroes. We needed to teach Torah and impart the stories and values of the Jewish people to these young minds. But how could we make these ancient stories meaningful to 3, 4, & 5 year olds children, who only wanted to talk about super heroes? After much discussion, we came up with a plan - making the children the heroes! For thousands of years, heroic stories have been used to inspire, motivate, and transfer cultural values to children. The stories have a common pattern. They begin with a likeable hero who encounters a challenge or roadblock in life and then, with the help of others, the hero emerges from the difficult situation transformed by his or her experiences. Heroic stories are found everywhere in modern media, but they are also found in the Torah and the stories of the Jewish people. Thus began our first big lesson: Heroes For Heroes. By involving our families, congregants and community, we are able to offer our children the experience of tying modern day heroes back to the story of the Maccabees. We reached out specifically to the family of Major Stuart Adam Wolfer (April 23, 1971 - April 6, 2008 KIA Baghdad, Iraq), son of Esther and Len Wolfer. Stuart is our hometown hero. And so, in his memory, each Hanukkah we honor him and celebrate his life by coming together as a community. We spend the day assembling comfort packages, with items the children have collected, for men and women stationed overseas. The children learn that they themselves can be REAL heroes. This event has been generously sponsored for the last three years by Lauren Cohen (Zevi) in memory of her father and hero, Alan Cohen. If you or someone you know is active or retired military and would like to join us for this most special event on December 16, 2015, please call Debbie Fried at (561) 750-9665 ext.302 or email Debbie.Fried@bnai-torah.org. Major Stuart Adam Wolfer z”l To learn more about Stuart, please visit www.msawi.org. The Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute (MSAWI) was established so that his legacy of leadership, commitment to his country and community service will continue to live on and to inspire future generations of children, adults and leaders. 14 CHAI www.bnai-torah.org Family Time is launching a new podcast - See Me Hear Me Love Me for parents and the grown-ups who care for and about young children. We know that life with kids is messy and we want to be there to celebrate the messes - from spilled milk to emotions spilling out of little volcanoes. Parents have been able to find friendship, support and trusted information in Family Time programs at B’nai Torah Congregation for the last 12 years. With podcasting, we can be available to parents “on demand”...where and when they need us. We have started recording the first episodes in a beautiful Sound Room off the Millicent and Sigmund Nathan Library and look forward to posting complete episodes mid-November. You will find us on iTunes, on the Family Time website - www.FamilyTimeInc.com, on Twitter @FamilyTimeInc, and on Karen Deerwester’s Facebook page. Be sure to tune in to hear our friend David Dweck’s fabulous voiceover - it’s all about the bass! Thank you to B’nai Torah Congregation for this incredible opportunity to have a new expanded conversation with parents, to share their stories and, most of all, to let parents know they are not alone in the joy or the challenges. Rabbi Steinhardt - we LOVE the Sound Room! We are looking forward to introducing everyone to the remarkable, interesting and extraordinary families and resources here at B’nai Torah Congregation! In this feature, I conduct quick interviews with our amazing clergy, staff and community leaders. These questions are meant to be light and fun, and provide a little insight into the people of B’nai Torah. In this issue, I interviewed B’nai Torah member and 2016 Dinner Dance honoree, Jerry Kramer. Q: How did your time in the military shape the person you are today? A: Q: What brought you to B’nai Torah Congregation? A: I came in as a non-member initially and attended services. After a couple of months I told my wife, ‘This is the place I want to be!’ Q: What do you love about B’nai Torah? A: I love the rabbis, the cantors, the sermons. From day one, as a stranger, I felt such warmth from the congregation. I recall the first day I was here, a congregant came over to me and welcomed me; it was a great feeling and I felt immediately connected to B’nai Torah. Q: What made you decide to enlist in the Military? A: I was looking for stability, for family and for connection to other people. I only had an elementary school education and the military seemed the best place for me. 24 Q: What is something that most people would be surprised to know about you? A: The military gave me courage, the formation of relationships that were lacking in my life, and the knowledge to follow orders and carry out what was requested of me and to not make excuses! That I turned 87 years old in November! Q: You have been married 41 years. movies! A: You have to remember to always place that you have visited? What advice would you give young people being married today? compromise. You are part of a partnership and it’s no longer about ‘having it your way.’ You always must consider your partner. Q: What word would your kids use to describe you? Your wife? A: I think they would both say that I am their best friend! Q: What is your favorite way to relax? A: I like to play bridge and watch classic Q: What do you consider a favorite A: I love Israel! I find it inspirational. Q: The theme of this years’ dinner dance is Caring Hearts. What do caring hearts look like to you? A: You make a living by what you earn but a life by what you give. A Caring Heart is a Giving Heart. Q: Is there a moment that stands out as a defining moment in your life? A: Yom Kippur War started me on the road to realizing that I want to make a difference. She is professional & knows her stuff. She priced our home right, negotiated on our behalf and sold it quickly. This was the 2nd time I used Claire to sell a home & I recommend her to everyone!
