IT HAS BEEN A VERY GOOD YEAR
Today's
Game
by Horace Gosier
The intersectional rivalry between
FAMU and Tennessee State University is without doubt the keenest on the
list of out-of-state Rattler opponents.
It is an annual grid-iron clash that
viscerally involves not only the
players, but the followers of both
teams as wells.
And so tonight, look for a hotly
contested battle with each participants giving his all. The winner
won't necessarily be the best team.
Rather, the team which can best control the emotion and excess adrenalin
and keep its cool in the unorthodoxed situations which inevitably surface, will likely be the game's victor.
The game is a crucial one for both
teams. The Rattlers are looking to
regain the poise that escaped them in
their 16-13 loss to Alabama State and
their 14-14 tie with Morris Brown. A
decisive win over Tennessee State
might put them on the right track for
the tough schedule ahead, and gain
the attention of the ranking "experts"
who earlier this season shunned them
so unjustly.
Tennessee State, which entered the
1976 season on the heels of a 5-4-0
record for 1975, would do much to
assuage the spirits of Head Coach
John Merritt who boasts an overall
106-19-3 record as he enters his 14th
year at the Tiger helm.
Going into tonight's game, the Big
Blue Tigers are 5-1-0, having won over
Middle Tennessee State (26-17),
Jackson State (23-20), Alabama A & M
(26-0), Texas Southern (21-8), and
Grambling (34-20). Their only loss has
come at the hands of FAMU's Orange
Blossom Classic opponent, the Central State Marauders who eased past
TSU 24-18.
To date, TSU is averaging 303 yards
per game in total offense. The team is
averaging 139 yards per game rushing
and 164 yards passing. Fullback
Lawrence Barnes is the Tigers' leading
rusher with 3)5 net ground yards and
seven touchdowns to his credit.
Quarterback Austin Thompson has
passed .119 times, making 59 completions for 942 yards and has drawn
10 interceptions. Twenty of those
passes were caught by flanker Jerrold
McRae (number 83) for 200 yards and
two touchdowns. Flanker Rodney
Parker (numer(number 40) has caught 13
practice, working on their overal
game and concentrating on som,
fundamentals that hopefully wil
return the poise the team has lacket
in its last two outings.
Albert Chester, shaken up in th.
final period against Morris Brown, i
back in shape and will call the signal
for the Rattlers. He may be spelled b"
Ricky Pope who came in an(
engineered the final Rattler drive las
week that ended in a missed field goa
last week.
But that was last week. Coach Rud,
Hubbard and the Rattlers have lef
that one behind and are concen
trating on gaining their fourth seasor
win here tonight.
passes for 331 yards and four TD's.
All four of the above named are expected to figure prominently in
tonight's contest.
FAMU's average total offense350.2 yards per game-exceeds that
of TSU, however, the Rattlers have
not been able to translate those yards
into victories due mainly to costly turnovers.
In last week's contest with Morris
Brown in Atlanta, the Rattlers
dominated the game in terms of yardage. Tailbacks James Early and
Michael Thomas both gained in excess of 100 yards. Still the game ended
in a tie.
The Rattlers had a good week of
1975 FLASHBACK
Florida A&M 20, Tennessee State 0
NASHVILLE, Tenn., October 25-Blending a magnificent defensive effort
with a persistent and opportunistic offense, Florida A&M's Rattlers stuck it to
Tennessee State 20-0 and cast aside what was thought to be a hex held over the
Rattlers by the Big Blue Tigers.
Not since 1968 had Florida A&M been able to beat Tennessee State, and
never had the Rattlers been able to win in Nashville, but this cold, rainny night
in Nashville marked the end of an era . . . or the beginning of one, if you will.
The Rattler defense intercepted six Tennessee State passes, forced two
safeties and set up the rest of the scoring for offense, which stood ready and
cashed in.

RUDY HUBBARD
-Head Football Coach
When Ruuy Hubbard accepted the challenge of
resurrecting Florida A&M's collapsing football fortunes
in 1974, he didn't make any long range plans. He wanted
. and not them.
immediate results
In just two years Hubbard redirected the FAMU
football program and under his leadership the Rattlers
regained that respectability that had become a tradition
on the highest of Tallahassee's seven hills.
Florida A&M had has a history of winning at football.
From 1937 through 1969 the Rattlers won 252 games and
lost only 46, an average of just over one loss per year for
33 seasons. In the four years immediately preceding
Hubbard's arrival A&M dropped 22 games for an average
of 5.5 losses per season, while winning only 21.
In Hubbard's first season, 1974, he coached the
Rattlers to a 6-5 season, their first winning record since a
similar mark in 1971. And that was just the beginning. In
1975 Hubbard's team posted a 9-2 record, their best
overall since 1969. It also was the first time a Florida A&M
team had won as many as nine games in a single season
since 1964.
With a background as a former player and coach under Woody Hayes at Ohio State, Hubbard brought in a
winning attitude. He is a believer in sound, fundamental
football and knows how to recruit the horses to make his
program go.
While at Ohio State, Hubbard personally recruited
Archie Griffin, who later became the only person ever to
win the Heisman Trophy twice, Cornelius Greene and
John Hicks. Greene has been the MVP in the Rose Bowl
while Hicks won the Outland and Lombardi trophies
before entering the National Football League.
An All-Conference and All-County performer in
high school basketball and football for three years, Hubbard was player-of-the-year as a freshman at Ohio State.
A knee injury sidelined the running back for most of
his sophomore year, but he fought back and was in uniform before the season's end. He was a starter all his
junior year and really blossomed during his senior year,
averaging 5.3 yards per carry, scoring three touchdowns,
catching 13 passes for 98 yards and averaging 17.1 yards
per attempt on kickoff returns.
Hubbard was drafted by Montreal of the Canadian
Football League in 1968 but forewent a professional football career when he was offered a job as backfield coach
for Ohio State. Hubbard said he wanted someday to
become a head coach and "I felt my chances were far
greater as an assistant to Coach Hayes than chancing a
professional football career."
He joined the Buckeye staff in 1968 and that year
Ohio State won the national championship. He has
coached Jim Otis, Leo Hayden and John Brockington, all
now prominent figures in the National Football League.
Hubbard has chartered the path for himself and his
Rattlers and from all indications that path leads to continued success. He will accept no less.
Hubbard hails from Hubbard. Ohio, where he
attended Hubbard High School (the names are mere
coincidence). He was recruited by over 60 colleges
before finally deciding on Ohio State.
He is married to the former Belinda Schwartz and is
the father of one son. Sean, and one daughter, olinda.
AL BOGAN
Offensive
Centers & Guards
Bogan became the first
member of Rudy Hubbard's
staff when Hubbard was named head coach. "AI will help
our program tremendously,"
Hubbard said. Bogan is a
graduate of Ohio University
and was an assistant at Indiana State University before
coming to Florida A&M. Dur/
ing his playing days at Ohio
University he starred asa running back and wide receiver. He is a student of the game
and approaches it with much vigor and enthusiasm.

OFFICER OF THE DECK.
AYEAR OUT OF COLLEGE AND IN CHARGE
OF THE ENTIRE SHIP.
The Midshipmen of the Naval ROTC at
FAMU have returned from their Summer
Cruises to Hong Kong, Hawaii, Rio De
Janiero and the Mediterranean. They've seen
a lot and they have enjoyed an exciting and
challenging summer. But Most important,
they each were given responsibilities which
most people never see in a lifetime. Picture
yourself on the Bridge of a Destroyer, or at
the controls of an F-14 Tomcat or leading a
platoon of Marines. Our NROTC graduates
are out there now as leaders in the Navy and
Marine corps.
If you are looking for a challenge and a
position with some real responsibility after
you graduate from FAMU then the Naval
ROTC may be just the thing for you. The
NROTC has a program designed for
freshmen and sophomores through which
you can earn a commission as an officer in the
Navy or Marine Corps. And if you are a
Technology, Math. Physics or Chemistry
major you may qualify for a full-time
Scholarship.
We invite you to stop by the Unit at 690
Gamble Street to discuss the many
opportunities available to men and women
at FAMU in the Naval Service. Or call us at
599-3980 or 599-3989. When you see our
Midshipmen on campus ask them what their
future holds. That future could be yours.

The
New
Chevrolet
The handwriting was on the wall.
It clearly said that the time had
come for a new kind of 6-passenger
car. One that would use fuel and space
more sparingly yet still provide the
kind of room and ride you've found so
comfortable and comforting in our
popular full-size Chevys of the past.
The car is here.
It's called The New Chevrolet.
makes it easier to climb into and out of.
More trunk room
Thetrunk is truly enormous, more than
a cubic foot bigger than last year, with
a nice flat floor that makes it easy to
arrange things.
It's one of many pleasant surprises
awaiting you in The New Chevrolet.
More efficient
The New Chevrolet is, by design, a
very lean but very strong automobile,
with not a trace of flab anywhere on its
beautiful body, chassis or frame.
And it pays off at the gas pump.
In EPA tests, The New Chevrolet is
rated at 22 mpg highway 17 mpg city
with the new standard Six, auto. trans.
and 2.73 axle. Remember, EPA figures
are estimates. The actual mileage you
get will vary depending on the type of
driving you do, your driving habits, your
car's condition and available equipment. (In California, EPA mileage
figures are lower.)
The New Chevrolet.
We made it right for the times
without making it wrong for the people.
You're going to love it.
More head room
The New Chevrolet stands a
little taller than last year's full-size
Chevy, which perhaps explains why it
looks so very proud in profile.
Inside, there's a little more clearance for heads and hats and hairdos,
both in the back seat and up front.
A new acoustical ceiling helps
keep things nice and quiet.
More leg room
We've increased the rear seat
leg room by an inch in The Sedan
(below) and by nearly two inches in
The Coupe.
It will make a significant difference
in riding comfort, especially on trips.
The straight-up styling of the car
Now that's more like it.

FAMU CO-CAPTAINS ARE
TEAM LEADERS
.re
;gi
MIKE SOREY
by Horace Gosier
"A Rattler team captain isa guy that
all the players respect, and he has to
be someone who I can believe in.
Most importantly, he has to be a good
football player."
Those thoughts, says FAMU Head
Coach Rudy Hubbard, are the
guiding principles to which he
adheres in selecting team captains
for each season.
On the 1976 Rattler roster, there are
many players who possess traits of
leadership. But when the selection
process was conducted earlier this
year, four names stood out from the
rest.
Rattler co-captains Cal Burgess, Earl
Goodman, Curtis Parnell and Michael
Sorey were selected by Coach Hubbard to provide the necessary player
leadership, and they have done so admirably.
According to Hubbard, other factors in their selections were their individual improvement as players, and
their motivation to work on their own
during the off-season.
"All four are hard workers," said
Hubbard. "They did a lot of work on
theirown weight-lifting and runningand this affected the whole team."
Cal Burgess, the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Wallace H.
Burgess of
Tallahassee, is a senior Business
Management major. His hobbies are
sports, traveling and pretty girls. Cal
is a wide receiver and he is interested
in pro football and private business as
career options. He wears number 21
on offense.
Earl Roland Goodman, defensive
end, is the son of Mrs. Raynell Goodman of Tampa. He is a Health and
Physical Education major and has his
eyes on a career in pro football or
teaching. Earl enjoys music and sports
-24-
in his spare time, and he is a member
of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity, and is number 38 on defense.
Curtis Parnell, affectionately called
"Pecan," plays deep back for the
Rattlers and is a senior Health and
Physical Education major. He is the
son of Mrs. Lula Mae Russ of Miami.
Curtis plays, among other things in his
spare time, basketball, softball, pingpong, and tennis. His career choices
are professional football, teaching
and coaching football. Curt wears
number 20 on defense.
Michael Sorey, a senior Business
Management major, is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. Arthur H. Sorey of Miami.
Mike plays tight end and plans to
have careers in pro football and
business. He plays basketball, pool,
tennis and likes to swim in his spare
time, He is number 81 on offense.
The Rattlers are fortunate to have
four men of their caliber.
