Applications
The Flo-Dar area/velocity radar flow meter offers a revolutionary approach to monitoring flow in open channel
systems. It is equipped with two sensors. A radar source measures the surface flow velocity and the associated
ultrasound probe measures the water level.
Flo-Dar is used for the following applications:
o Industrial:
- Monitoring and compliance of rain water,
- Operational waste,
- Factory inlets,
- Factory outlets,
- Non-contact cooling water.
o
Design offices and communities:
- Sewer sanitary evaluation studies,
- Collector systems,
- Capacity studies,
- Combined sewer overflows,
- Inflow and infiltration studies,
- Invoicing/property transfer,
- Factory inlets and outlets.
Measurement Principle
Velocity measurement
The water surface velocity is measured by radar technology. A radar beam is
sent from the sensor to the water surface at the middle of the pipe. A portion of
the signal is reflected at a slightly different frequency. The frequency difference,
called the Doppler frequency, is directly proportional to the flow velocity.
Proprietary algorithms are then used to calculate the mean velocity of the fluid.
Depth measurement
The water depth is measured with an ultrasound pulse echo sensor. An
electronic pulse is sent to the surface of the water, and a portion of the signal is
sent back to the sensor. The return travel time to and from the surface is used
to calculate the distance between the water surface and the sensor. The water
level is deduced according to the sensor installation height.
Flow calculation
The flow rate Q is calculated from the following formula: Q = S x Vm
- S: Water area obtained from the water level,
- Vm: Mean fluid velocity.
Advantages
Precise flow rate measurement
Flo-Dar gives the user precise fluid flow rate measurements over a
wide range of flow rates and for challenging flow condition
applications by measuring the surface velocity of the fluid.
Easy installation and maintenance
Because the sensor is mounted above the fluid flow, the sensor is
easy to install and remove. Moreover, Flo-Dar has ATEX
certification (available as an option), and can therefore be installed
in explosion-hazard areas.
Ideal solution for challenging flow conditions
Flo-Dar operates in most challenging conditions, including flows
with a high solids content, high temperatures, shallow and
corrosive flows, man-made channels, and high velocities up to 6
m/s.
Optional SVS surcharge velocity sensor
In case of surcharge, velocity measurement is handled by Flo-Dar's
optional SVS electromagnetic sensor. The flow sensor provides
constant monitoring with continuous measurement in dry or rainy
weather, with no need for periodic servicing or cleaning of the
sensor.
