Services Family and Individual Support Residential Social and Recreation Transportation Message from the Chairman of the Board of Directors Forty years of “Helping People Help Themselves.” Anniversaries, especially big ones, tend to be times of reflection. I’ve been thinking a lot this year about what it truly means to help people help themselves. When people first think of agencies like Greater Marlborough Programs Inc., they often tend to think of the group homes, and the physical infrastructure that allows us to provide basic necessities to our clients such as food, shelter, and security. While those things are all of immeasurable importance, and things GMPI does very well, they aren’t what make us who we are. What makes GMPI special, what makes us who we are, is each other. GMPI provides a safe place for its clients, staff, and volunteers to explore friendship, acceptance, and personal growth together. GMPI is, in the broadest and most wonderful sense of the word, a community made up of our clients, staff, and volunteers. A community where our clients can have fun, make friends, explore their humanity, experience personal growth, and have their needs, on all levels, met. I’d like to share with you my favorite thing about being a member of the GMPI community this year, witnessing the incredible growth of our Advocacy Group. The GMPI Advocacy Group is a group of clients who, with the help of our staff, engage in self-advocacy. The staff acts as facilitators to allow the group’s members to explore the issues important to them. It’s the job of the staff and volunteers at GMPI to be passionate, tireless advocates for our clients, and they are. Self- advocacy is one of the ultimate expressions of empowerment. The difference between being advocated for, and advocating for yourself is subtle on paper, but immeasurable in real life. Helping our clients to advocate on their own behalf is to truly help someone help themselves. As GMPI continues to grow and further explore what “Helping People Help Themselves” will look like for the next 40 years, I invite you to join us. Find out what program we are running that calls to your personal passions and donate to it. You can donate financially, or just as importantly, through your time and talents. These are all resources GMPI needs to be successful. I encourage you to contact GMPI and see what you can do to become more involved, to become a member of our community. We’re doing good things, and we’d like your help. Lastly, some thanks are in order. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to thank the management team, staff, and volunteers of GMPI. You provide daily examples of what it means to live a life that makes a difference. Thank you as well to our clients for providing daily examples of triumphing over adversity, and for welcoming us into your community.
