Personal Statement
Within my home discipline of Information Retrieval, I have served as both the Program Chair and
General Chair for the main international conference in the area, SIGIR. Within my university, I
currently serve as the Associate Dean of Faculty within my college, and I serve on the universitywide Academic Plan Steering Committee, chairing the working group on the Faculty of the Future.
I am particularly interested in the issue of interdisciplinarity, both in research and in faculty
development. Fully 1/3 of the faculty in my College have interdisciplinary appointments, including
many that I recruited as Hiring Chair and Associate Dean.
