He also devised a new packaging system for preserving coffee in which the cans were filled with inert gases instead of air pressurization. Illy coffee was soon “exported: outside the immediate Trieste area and was eventually sold all over Italy. Website : Lamborghini.com (http://www.lamborghini.com/) Lambretta In 1922, Ferdinando Innocenti of Pescia built a steel-tubing factory in Rome and in 1931 took the business to Milan where he built a larger factory. During the Second World War, Innocenti saw the future of cheap, private transport and decided to produce a motor scooter – competing on cost and weather protection against the ubiquitous motorcycle. As wealth increased in Western Europe in the late 1960s, the demand for motor scooters fell as the small car became available to more people and Lambretta started to struggle financially as did the parent company Innocenti. Innocenti/Lambretta was eventually sold to BLMC. Unfortunately, lack of foresight had caused BLMC to join a fashion trend that was ending rapidly. Long industrial strikes in BLMC ensued; motor-scooter sales took a nosedive, and both Innocenti and Lambretta shut up shop in 1972. The Indian government bought the Milanese factory for essentially the same reasons that Ferdinando Innocenti had built it after the War, creating Scooters India Limited (SIL). India was a country with poor infrastructure, economically not ready for small private cars yet with a demand for private transport. Today, the Innocenti brand name brands are owned by Fiat whereas the oldest Lambretta and Lambro trademark registrations worldwide are owned by Lambretta Consortium. It was first patented by inventor Luigi De Ponti for Alfonso Bialetti in 1933. Bialetti Industrie continues to produce the same model under the name “Moka Express. Il Centro – Co.As.It Resource Centre Newsletter Volume 20, Issue 2 \ Angelo Motta was an Italian entrepreneur, founder of the food company Motta associated with the commercial production of the sweet yeast bread panettone (or in Milanese panaton). He was born in the Lombardy commune of Gessate in 1890 and by 1921 was using special baking paper to produce a distinctive dome like version of the festive bread. Motta and his rival panettone maker Gioacchino Alemagna are credited with the industrialisation of panettone from its Milanese origins to a staple of the Italian Christmas. The Motta and Alemagna brands are now owned by Bauli an Italian bakery company based in Verona. Murano glass is a famous product of the Venetian island of Murano. th It is believed that glassmaking in Murano originated in 9 century Rome, with significant Asian and Muslim influences, as Venice was a major trading port. Murano’s reputation as a centre for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their foundries to Murano in 1291. Murano glass is still interwoven with Venetian glass. Today, the artisans of Murano are still employing these century-old techniques, crafting everything from contemporary art glass and glass figurines to Murano glass chandeliers and wine stoppers. Nutella is the brand name of a chocolate hazelnut spread. Nutella, manufactured by the Italian company Ferrero, was introduced on the market in 1963. The recipe was developed from an earlier Ferrero spread released in 1944 and is now sold in over 75 countries. An older recipe, Gianduja, was a mixture containing approximately 50% almond and/or hazelnut paste and 50% chocolate. It was developed in Piedmont, Italy, after taxes on cocoa beans hindered the manufacture and distribution of conventional chocolate. Pietro Ferrero, who owned a patisserie in Alba, in the Langhe district of Piedmont, sold an initial batch of 300 kilograms of “Pasta Gianduja” in 1946. This was originally a solid block, but in 1949, Pietro started to sell a creamy version as “Supercrema.” In 1963, Pietro’s son, Michele, revamped this recipe with the intention of marketing it across Europe and re-named it “Nutella.” The product was an instant success and remains widely popular worldwide. SpA is a diverse multinational company based in Milan, Italy. The company, the world’s fifth largest tyre manufacturer, is present in over 160 countries, has 20 manufacturing sites around the world and a network of around 10,000 distributors and retailers. In the 1950s, Alberto Pirelli commissioned the building of a famous Milanese skyscraper in the same area that housed the very first Pirelli factory during the 19th century which is known as the Pirelli Tower. Founded in 1872 in Milan by Giovanni Battista Pirelli, the company initially specialised in rubber and derivative processes. In 1974, Pirelli invented the “wide radial tyre”, upon a request from the Lancia rally racing team for a tyre strong enough to withstand the power of the new Lancia Stratos. At that time, racing tyres were either slick tyres made with the cross ply technique (very wider tyres with a reduced sidewall height), or radial tyres, which were too narrow to withstand the Stratos’ power and did not provide enough stability or grip. Website : versace.com (http://www.versace.com/) Il Centro – Co.As.It Resource Centre Newsletter Volume 20, Issue 2 \ Vespa is an Italian brand of scooter manufactured by Piaggio. The name means wasp in Italian. The Vespa has evolved from a single model mother scooter manufactured in 1946 by Piaggio & Co. S.p.A. of Pontedera, Italy – to a full line of scooters and one of seven companies today owned by Piaggio – now Europe’s largest manufacturer of two-wheeled vehicles and the world’ fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer by unit sales. Post World War II Italy, in light of its agreement to cessation of war activities with the Allies, had its aircraft industry severely restricted in both capability and capacity. Piaggio emerged from the conflict with its Pontedera fighter plane plant demolished by bombing. Italy's crippled economy and the disastrous state of the roads did not assist in the re-development of the automobile markets. Enrico Piaggio, the son of Piaggio's founder Rinaldo Piaggio, decided to leave the aeronautical field in order to address Italy's urgent need for a modern and affordable mode of transportation for the masses. As well as producing suits for its own labels, it manufactures suits for labels such as Gucci, Yves St Laurent and Tom Ford.
