Our JOURNEY TOGETHER/Summer 2011
FromThe Administrator
Our Blessings
Dear Friends of St. Patrick’s,
Once again our prayers were answered for beautiful
weather for our 22nd Annual Golf Outing. Bless all who
came to play, all who volunteered for the event and all of
our generous donors.
Our Volunteer Mass was celebrated by Monsignor Dalton
on April 30th. Donna Sable was the recipient of the Light of
St. Patrick’s Award for outstanding volunteer leadership and
dedication to our residents and the Carmelite Mission. The
Youth Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Emily
Bajzek for exhibiting leadership among her peers and devotion
to our residents. We thank them and ALL our volunteers for
their time, love and devotion.
Summer of Service, our youth volunteer program, is in full
swing with 34 teens visiting St. Patrick’s throughout the summer
months participating in intergenerational activities. The teens
coordinated three special events with the residents including
Gourmet Dessert & Broadway Music Party, a Hawaiian Luau
and a Magic Show.
I will soon be setting up a family meeting to review the outcome
of our Illinois Department of Public Health and Life Safety
annual surveys. I hope to have a guest speaker as well. I thank
our staff for the excellent job they do for caring for and about
our residents.
We have wonderful events coming up this fall. Our 3rd Annual
Grandparent’s Day will be held on Sunday, September 11th.
Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of current
residents are welcome. We will also be hosting our 8th Annual
Gold Key Gala on Thursday, September 22nd at Cress Creek
Country Club. I hope you will be able to join us.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and please know that we pray for
all of you.

Our JOURNEY TOGETHER/Summer 2011
Rotarians Remember Ron Buonauro with Garden Makeover
R
on Buonauro loved
his family, friends
and St. Patrick’s
Residence. Ron, owner of
Café Buonaro’s passed
away in 2008 after a
courageous battle with
cancer. “When looking
for a local community
project and to keep
Ron’s memory in the
forefront, the Rotary
chose St. Patrick’s,
not only because of Ron’s devotion to St. Patrick’s
and the Carmelite Sisters, but to honor the selfless
work they do caring for the elderly citizens of our
community,” said Mary Ann Junkroski, Community
Chair of Sunrise Rotary and one of the organizers
of the project. The makeover was made possible
through collaborative grants from the Rotary Clubs of
Naperville, Sunrise and Downtown, and the
Ron Buonauro Memorial Foundation.
On Sunday, July 10th, forty volunteers from Sunrise
Rotary came to St. Patrick’s to give the garden and
areas around the facility a beauty boost with bushes,
flowers, fresh mulch and specially designed trellises
for the enjoyment of the residents and families of
St. Patrick’s. Rotarian, Geoff Roehll, designed the
new landscape and coordinated the outdoor planting
project. The team pruned and shaped trees and other
existing shrubbery. The funding from the grants
allowed for new trellises that were constructed and
stained on site, and many new bushes and flowers
that were lovingly planted by everyone who shared
their day with us to make a difference in the lives of
our residents. “This wonderful project will greatly
enhance our garden,” said Sister Jeanne. “It means so
much to our residents who enjoy their time outdoors
and will now be able to do it with added shade and
beautiful flowers in so many different colors,” she
added. “This is their Home. God Bless the Rotary!”
“Ron would be proud of his fellow Rotarians and so
pleased they chose St. Patrick’s to bring beauty and
joy to those who live here,” said Madelene Bernar,
Director of Development. “This really is a tribute to
Ron’s goodness and his love of Naperville.”

Resident Artisans Exhibit Their Talents
T
he Residents of St. Patrick’s led very full,
productive and interesting lives. Many served in
the Armed Forces, but all raised their families,
worked hard and made time to pursue hobbies they
loved. On May 27th, the St. Patrick’s Life Enrichment
Department hosted “Meet the Artist”, a gallery-like
event exhibiting the artwork of our residents. Artwork
of different mediums were displayed throughout the
first floor where many of the artists were available and
happy to tell their guests about their work. “This is so
exciting for me,” bubbled Lucile N., who sat by a winter
scene she painted in oils. Invited guests and residents
strolled the hallway and among the tables to admire the
talents of those who live, work and visit at St. Patrick’s.
The idea for “Meet the Artist” came about as the
Life Enrichment staff began to interview residents
about their life interests. “It became apparent we had
many talented artists in the facility,” said Stephanie
Donaghey, Assistant Administrator. “With the help of
supportive families, we were able to bring together
a variety of genres.” There were bronze sculptures,
published books, glasswork, hand-made jewelry, fabric
art and scenes painted in pastels, pencil and oils.
Also exhibited were the talents of resident families
and our own staff. Beautiful wood carvings created by
family member Hector F. were proudly displayed and
quilting done by our social worker, Joanne Sheahan,
covered the table while she answered questions of
interested guests. The lilting tones of the flute were
provided by Life Enrichment staff member, Jenny
McDougal, who also entertains weekly on our 2-E unit.
The beautiful piano music and opera that embraced the
room was played and sung by Tony Antonuk, a CNA
on 3-E. The pièce de résistance were the decadent
desserts. It was a lovely evening that enlightened
friends, families and staff alike. It inspired us to realize
that life generates legacies that will be gifts forever.
The St. Patrick’s Life Enrichment Department
is collecting resident life history information to be
put on DVD and used in their programs.

New Rooftop Garden Offers Memorial Opportunities
O
ur second floor
rooftop has been
transformed into a
beautiful garden, complete
with shade and ornamental
trees, flowers and a pergola
that offers shade from the
summer sun. The focus of
the garden is the beautiful
fountain that adds to the
ambiance of the parklike space. St. Patrick’s is
offering our families whose
loved ones have passed away, the opportunity to bestow a memorial in
their name. There are sponsorships for the purchase of the foliage and
furniture, such as trees, garden chairs, benches and bistro tables with
chairs. There are also opportunities to sponsor the fountain and a garden
naming sponsorship. Memorials will range from $800 to $10,000. The
garden sponsorships are limited. For more details, please call Madelene
Bernar, Director of Development at (630) 416-6565, extension 511, or
email mbernar@stpatricksresidence.org. St. Patrick’s wishes to thank
all our wonderful friends and families who attended last year’s Gold Key
Gala, to which proceeds helped make our garden possible.
The new pergola provides extra shade to protect the
residents fromdirect sunlight.
ADay to Celebrate Grandparents
T
he Residents of St. Patrick’s will be hosting the 3rd Annual
Grandparent’s Day on Sunday, September 11th at 1:30 p.m.4:00 p.m. It’s a day of celebration for all their grandchildren,
great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. It’s a fun, family
day packed with activities planned for residents and children to
enjoy together. Rick Colen will entertain the audience with his
Juggling, Comedy and Magic Show. Perhaps you have seen him
entertaining the crowds at Navy Pier? Coming back by popular
demand will be the Dunk-A-Nun Contest. Two of our Sisters will
be donning their swim gear to prepare for what could be a very
wet afternoon. In addition to the entertainment, guests will enjoy
making Grandparent’s Day cards, children’s games, face painting,
a clown and a fun menu of hot dogs, lemonade, popcorn, yummy
cotton candy and other snacks.
