NEWS CELEBRATING A CENTURY OF EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATING YOUNG WOMEN ISSUE 1 | 12 FEBRUARY 2016 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of OLSH, Welcome back to the OLSH community! We especially welcome our new students and their families and our new staff. We extend a warm OLSH welcome to our new Acting Assistant Principal Mrs Stacey Potts. In any school environment, the spirit of welcome is so important in creating a strong foundation. We welcomed our Year 7 parents to our community on Wednesday evening. The atmosphere was abuzz with friendly chatter, parents and teachers getting to know one another. A special thank you to the Year 12 Hospitality students; Angelica Legaspi , Jessica Sowerby, Eleanor Torrisi, Fiona Barkho, Maddy Fuller, Kate Domenici & Monique Calleja, who helped serve our guests. Thank you to our Parents and Friends Committee for putting on the parent welcome and being present to meet our new parents. I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me. Matthew 25:35 Welcome to our new staff Madeline Agius – Mathematics Dora Bizannes - HSIE Rachel Buddery - Science Panayiota Economou - English Erika Fitzgerald - HSIE Monalene Inandan - HSIE Ian Ingpen - Science Debbie Jenner - TAS Asst Rodney Kisna - HSIE Nissa Moore - Library Stacey Potts - AP, English, RE Sarah Quirke - PDHPE Brennan Sharpley - LOL Admin, RE Robert Tall - English Holidays are often about recharging the batteries and spending time with family and friends. But for schools it is a time when some big jobs can get completed. We were excited to return to see the new ICT Support desk in our Learning Resource Centre, the refurbishment of some offices and learning spaces in the Fyfe Building. A Business Services training office completed, some corridors and classrooms were painted and new telephone handsets were installed throughout the school. This year Pope Francis announced as, an Extraordinary Jubilee, which has at its center, the mercy of God. It will be a Holy Year of Mercy, a time of grace, peace, conversion and joy. The theme of our Opening Mass last week was 'Open your Heart to God's mercy.' The theme celebrates the Jubilee Year of Mercy and also our identity here at OLSH as a community of the heart, who make God’s love and mercy known to everyone we meet. During our Mass, Dr Dan White the Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools presented us with our Archbishops Charter for Catholic Schools Certificate of Recognition. As a Catholic community, we care for and support each other, we reach out to those in need, we grow in our awareness of God’s love, and, following the way of the Sisters, we try to be the heart and hands of Jesus to everyone we meet. Last year our College was acknowledged and affirmed for the way the school has responded to and implemented the Archbishops Charter for Catholic schools into the life of the College. The external review report stated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart ensures Catholic Life and Religious Education are key priorities underpinning practice, policies and culture. OLSH - A COMMUNITY OF THE HEART, LIVING AND LEARNING TOGETHER W www.olshkensington.catholic.edu.au | E info@olshkensington.catholic.edu.au | P 9662 4088 | F 9663 5252 PRINCIPAL Ash Wednesday this week marked the beginning of Lent, a time for prayer and reflection. We especially thank Sr Philippa, Sr Lorraine, Sr Cathy, Sr Ancilla, Sr Jenny, Sr Teri & Sr Merrilyn for sharing their experience, strength and hope with the students and staff on Ash Wednesday. Their stories and insights give us a global view of our Church and its needs. We are also reminded of the importance of alms giving during our Lenten journey. In the weeks of lent each member of the school community is invited to go without some activity or thing (fast) and to donate money to support the mission work of the OLSH community at Kiribati. As a community we have also made a commitment to support the Project Compassion Appeal. We continue to focus on being a learning centred school where we aspire for everyone in our community to flourish. This year we will aim to REACH in everything we do. R is for being resilient. E is aiming for excellence A is for attitude, maintaining a positive growth mindset C is for commitment, sticking at it H is for humour, having fun inside and outside the classroom. Our newsletters will share with you our REACH stories. The class of 2015 achieved some outstanding HSC results. We are so proud of their achievements. Special mention goes to Isabelle Hargraves who was awarded first place in HSC Society and Culture. Jessica Jakinsjah our College Dux achieved an ATAR of 98. Next week we welcome back members of the Class of 2015 to congratulate and honour them for their success in last year’s HSC. We wish the Class of 2015 every blessing as they set out as OLSH girls do, to make a difference. We honour our past and today acknowledge and remember one of our Ex Principal’s Sister Therese Farrell FDNSC. We were saddened as a community to hear of Sr Therese’s death on Thursday 14 January. Sr Therese was a great believer in the value of education. She was recognised for her creative and effective administrative skills. We thank God for her many gifts. A reminder to parents that holidays taken by students outside of school vacation periods will be included as absences. A certificate of exemption is no longer be granted for this purpose. If travel during school term is necessary the following conditions apply. If the principal accepts the reason for the absence, the absence will be marked as ”L” If the principal does not believe the absence is in the student’s best interests and does not accept the reason, the absence is unjustified and will be recorded as”A” Leave of 10 or more school days will require the completion of an Application for Leave Form (located on the College website). STUDENT ATTENDANCE As we begin our new year, we remind parents of the importance of school attendance. Substantial research exists which highlights the link between attendance and successful learning. With this in mind, we ask that appointments be made outside of school hours and that all girls are well organised so as to get to school on time every day. In an attempt to improve student lateness, Level 1 lunch detentions will be given to students who are late 3 times in 1 cycle regardless of the reason for lateness. If the lateness continues students will move to a Level 2 in the Student Management and Wellbeing plan. We ask that parents support us in this by reinforcing the importance of being at school punctually. If your daughter is absent on any given day, please call our office by 9.00am to inform us of the reason and back this up with a note on your daughter’s first day back. A text message is sent to parents if we have not heard from you with an explanation for your daughter’s absence each morning. STUDENT MANAGEMENT AND WELLBEING 2016 also sees the introduction of the Student Management and Wellbeing policy. Here at OLSH we have been facilitating a swap with Apple so that your daughter’s affected charger is replaced with a new safe plug. The issue is there are still a number of students who are yet to return their affected to the College Library and this is a concern. We are asking parents to please remind your daughter that if they are in Years 8 - 12 they must return their two prong wall plug to the College ASAP as they are no longer safe to use. If you have already taken the charger to Apple and made the swap OR if your daughter has misplaced it we are asking that you write a note to Ms Ackerman giving details of why the charger is not being returned so we can document this in our records. The safety of our students is our main concern and we would like to ensure that no potentially faulty chargers are being used in your homes. DO use this wall plug with DO NOT use this wall plug with THREE PRONGS. TWO PRONGS CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK 6-12 MARCH 2016 I belong. You belong. We belong. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS ENROLLING NOW I belong.
