The Hampton Bays Public Library will hold its annual budget vote on Tuesday, August 11, 2015
from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm in the Helen Gould Meeting Room. Copies of the proposed 2016
budget will be mailed to district residents and may be obtained in the library by July 28. The
Budget Information Hearing is on August 4, 2015 at 7pm.
Did you know that the no-parking signs in front of the library have been removed and that
parking is now permitted in front of the Library on Ponquogue Avenue? The Ponquogue
entrance of the Library is open all regular hours.

Meg Wolitzer. Tickets are selling fast; stop at the circulation desk for

As always, each department is offering an exciting array of new and ongoing programs for
patrons of all ages and interests. Remember–if you can’t get to the library, we offer many
online resources that are available to you 24/7 via the library website, including free eBooks
and audio books, electronic magazines, streaming video, language courses and numerous

Library Board Vacancy
The Hampton Bays Library Board of Trustees is seeking applications to fill two upcoming
vacancies on the Library Board. Applicants must be residents of the Hampton Bays School
District and have been a patron of the Library for at least one year. The position requires
attendance at monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm.
Those interested in serving may obtain an application form at the circulation desk in the
library. For additional information you may call the Director, Susan LaVista
or the Head of Circulation, Nancy Cariello at 728-6241.

Summer Weekly Programs
Our Weeklies have been created anew for Summer! They begin on Monday, July 13 and run for five
weeks (through the week of August 10). Registration for this session begins Tuesday, June 30 and
is ongoing through this session. Registration MUST be in person. Phone registration begins
Wednesday, July 1 and is ongoing through this session. There is no limit to registration for our
Weekly Programs. Each child must have his/her own HBPL library card in order to register.

Summer Reading Club!!

Readers of all ages will explore all sorts of exciting types of marine
life this Summer! Our activities are going to include a series of
special programs presented by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine
Research & Preservation and more! Sign up for the Summer Reading
Club and receive a cool beach towel with our Summer Seal logo as a
prize (for Pre-Readers & Readers, Babies will receive seal water toys–one per person).
Bring Reading Logs back between August 25 and 27 to receive raffle tickets for prizes.

No Child Left Inside Programs
Too much time indoors with television, video games and computers can be harmful
to our children. In the past you’ve joined us in the spirit of this nationwide movement
called “No Child Left Inside” and met us at local parks, farms and art studios for

Mock Strandings give participants an inside view of rescuing stranded
marine mammals on Long Island. Procedure, as well as what you can
do as a bystander, are discussed as well as the work of the New York
State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Program. Artifacts and life size models
of stranded animals are used in this exciting glimpse of what actually happens on a

The 2015 Adult Summer Reading Club @ HBPL: Escape the Ordinary
Sign up beginning Monday,
July 6 for a book club packet
consisting of six raffle tickets, a
Grand Prize ticket, and a suggested reading list with many ways to
“escape the ordinary.” Read six books of your choice (audiobooks OK
too!) through Friday, August 14. Submit one raffle ticket per book
per week for a chance to win a weekly prize and turn in your completed Grand Prize ticket for a chance to win the final Grand Prize!
This year the Grand Prize is a
10’-0” Pelican Kayak Esprit 100 with Paddle!

Summer is here and it’s our favorite time of year! As usual, we are
very excited about our summer line-up. Join our 2015 Summer
Reading Club Every Hero Has a Story and you can win awesome
prizes!! All prizes will be raffled off at our End of the Summer Party
on Friday, August 21!
We have something for everyone this summer! Some of our
awesome superhero-themed programs include: Superhero
Training Camp, Ninja Turtle Cupcakes, Anti-Hero Skull Earrings,
Comic Book Picture Frames, and more.
A HUGE thank you goes out to everyone who contributed to our
Prom Dress Drive. We collected over 200 dresses. Special thanks to

Join our fun summer reading club! For every book you read, you will receive a
raffle ticket. Prizes include gift cards, admission to Dave & Busters, the DVD or
video game of your choice and much more! PLUS, once you read 20 books or
more you will be entered into a drawing for the grand prize: a $250 Amazon

LUCKY US! Erik P. Kraft, author of the hilarious

reading theme: Every Hero Has a Story. He will
also tell us what inspired his novels, followed by a

Animal Shelter Writing Contest:
How Have You Been a Hero to Animals?
Wednesday, July 1 through Wednesday, August 19
Each month, the Teen Department facilitates programs that
directly help shelter animals. Teens, submit a photo of a shelter
animal that you have helped or adopted, create a unique piece
of art, or share your story, describing how you have been a hero
to a shelter animal. This can be through volunteering, adoption,
or by attending shelter-themed library programs.
One lucky teen will win a $50 Visa gift card. Plus,
we will also donate much needed items to the
shelter! You may submit your item in person to the
Teen department from Wednesday, July 1 through
Wednesday, August 19. Winner announced

Let’s “Superhero” the shelter animals again!
We’ll take pictures of shelter animals that
are up for adoption and transform them
with ink and paint into Super-Dogs and
Super-Cats! We’ll then use these images to
promote their adoption. What a fun way to
do something for your community.

Canasta Instructor Jacqui Palatnik will teach a beginner or refresher. Learn this card game that was popular in the fifties, and

Memoir Writing Workshop Series

Goldsmith, also known as the beloved Southampton High School
Varsity Football coach from 1955-1978.

Library patrons who would like help researching their ancestors
using online resources including Ancestry.com can sign up for a
one-hour session with Carol. You will get hints on how to start your
research and a list of online resources that you can access at the
library or from home. When you schedule your first session, pick
up a “Genealogy Introduction” form to fill out and bring with
you when you start.
Small Business Counseling (SCORE)
The first and third Tuesdays of the month from 6:00-9:00 pm
A representative from SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives)
will provide FREE business counseling at the Hampton Bays Library.
SCORE business counselors can help you develop
effective business plans and create strategies for
business growth. This free service is provided
by appointment only; call the circulation desk at 728-6241 to
schedule a one-hour appointment.

Friends “Twice Sold Tales” Book Store
Open all year! Saturdays from 9:00 am-2:00 pm;
please enter from the parking lot.
The Friend’s Matching Grant Challenge reached its goal of $500! A
grateful “thank you” to the generous donor and to all who contributed to
the challenge.
The Memorial Day Book Sale on the Lawn: Girl Scouts and volunteers
had a great time selling a variety of books under the tent on the front lawn
of the library.
The Authors’ Luncheon: The Friends of the Hampton Bays Public Library
will host an Authors’ Luncheon at Oakland’s Restaurant (373 Dune Road)
in Hampton Bays on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 from noon to 4:00 pm. Roger
Rosenblatt and Meg Wolitzer will be the guest authors. Most recently
Mr. Rosenblatt authored The Book of Love and The Boy Detective while Ms.
Wolitzer wrote The Interestings, and a book for young adults, Belzhar. The
cost of this event is $50.00 per person. Tickets are on sale now at the library
circulation desk through July 6, 2015 and are non-refundable. Books to be
signed on the day of the event may be pre-ordered at the time of ticket
purchase. Proceeds from this event will help fund future programs at the
library to benefit the community.
Book Store News: Join us at the Book Store for “Christmas in July” on the
25th! Try our new play-a-ways, perfect for the beach. $5 includes play-a-way
book, battery, & earphones.
Everyone needs Friends, especially the library! It’s never
too late to send in your membership check to join the
Friends of the Hampton Bays Library. Through your
support, the Friends sponsor special programs and projects for the Library.
Art on Display
Every month the paintings, photography, sculpture
and other creative crafts are displayed in the Helen
Gould Room located directly off the main foyer,
and in the Lower Lobby display cases. We are
pleased to present the following exhibitions:
July
On display this month are the paintings,
lithographs and illustrations of local artist Andrew
Morris. Andrew is an accomplished fine-artist
with over 100 of his original works of art and
commissions in numerous private and corporate
collections. His colorful paintings, illustrations and
lithographs have been featured in many one-man
and group shows here on Long Island. An artist’s
reception will be held Sunday, July 5 in the Helen
Gould Room.
August
Returning artist Paul Padovano will display
paintings of Long Island represented in seascapes,
landscapes and still lifes.
We welcome inquiries about displaying your work. If
