HAMPTON BAYS PUBLIC LIBRARY bridge to life long learning A Message from the Director Children’s Room Learn and Play 2-4 The Hampton Bays Public Library will hold its annual budget vote on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm in the Helen Gould Meeting Room. Copies of the proposed 2016 budget will be mailed to district residents and may be obtained in the library by July 28. The Budget Information Hearing is on August 4, 2015 at 7pm. Did you know that the no-parking signs in front of the library have been removed and that parking is now permitted in front of the Library on Ponquogue Avenue? The Ponquogue entrance of the Library is open all regular hours. Español/Spanish Included in this mailing is the Friends of the Library Annual Programas y Servicios Membership letter. The Friends rely on your membership dues and 5 the Friends Book Store to fund Summer Reading Clubs, and special Teens Programs & News 6-7 Adult Services Programs & Events 8, 11-14 Technology Classes & Tech Help 15 programs & purchases. On July 14th the Friends will host an Author Luncheon at Oakland’s Restaurant featuring Roger Rosenblatt and Meg Wolitzer. Tickets are selling fast; stop at the circulation desk for information and tickets! If you are not currently a member, please consider joining and become a Friend! As always, each department is offering an exciting array of new and ongoing programs for patrons of all ages and interests. Remember–if you can’t get to the library, we offer many online resources that are available to you 24/7 via the library website, including free eBooks and audio books, electronic magazines, streaming video, language courses and numerous reference & educational tools. Check us out at hamptonbayslibrary.org. Library Board Vacancy The Hampton Bays Library Board of Trustees is seeking applications to fill two upcoming vacancies on the Library Board. Applicants must be residents of the Hampton Bays School District and have been a patron of the Library for at least one year. The position requires attendance at monthly meetings on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 pm. Those interested in serving may obtain an application form at the circulation desk in the library. Printed on Recycled Paper July/August 2015 News from The Children’s Room Summer Weekly Programs Our Weeklies have been created anew for Summer! They begin on Monday, July 13 and run for five weeks (through the week of August 10). Registration for this session begins Tuesday, June 30 and is ongoing through this session. Registration MUST be in person. Phone registration begins Wednesday, July 1 and is ongoing through this session. There is no limit to registration for our Weekly Programs. In the past you’ve joined us in the spirit of this nationwide movement called “No Child Left Inside” and met us at local parks, farms and art studios for storytimes and exploration time, this is where we will be meeting in the Summer: Mock Stranding Presented by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research & Preservation @ Ponquogue Bridge Beach (weather permitting) Wednesday, August 12, 1:30 pm Sponsored by the Friends of the Library Mock Strandings give participants an inside view of rescuing stranded marine mammals on Long Island. Procedure, as well as what you can do as a bystander, are discussed as well as the work of the New York State Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Stranding Program. Join us for a storytime in honor of the annual benefit for our favorite wildlife refuge. Quogue Wildlife Refuge was founded and incorporated in 1934 and is a non-profit organization that is supported by sponsors and through generous donations. We present this program days before their annual Summer Benefit, a $10.00 donation per child is required at the time of registration which will be given to the Refuge. Wednesday, July 1 through Wednesday, August 19 Each month, the Teen Department facilitates programs that directly help shelter animals. Teens, submit a photo of a shelter animal that you have helped or adopted, create a unique piece of art, or share your story, describing how you have been a hero to a shelter animal. This can be through volunteering, adoption, or by attending shelter-themed library programs. One lucky teen will win a $50 Visa gift card. Plus, we will also donate much needed items to the shelter! You may submit your item in person to the Teen department from Wednesday, July 1 through Wednesday, August 19. We’ll take pictures of shelter animals that are up for adoption and transform them with ink and paint into Super-Dogs and Super-Cats! We’ll then use these images to promote their adoption. Saturdays from 9:00 am-2:00 pm; please enter from the parking lot. The Friend’s Matching Grant Challenge reached its goal of $500! A grateful “thank you” to the generous donor and to all who contributed to the challenge. The Memorial Day Book Sale on the Lawn: Girl Scouts and volunteers had a great time selling a variety of books under the tent on the front lawn of the library. The Authors’ Luncheon: The Friends of the Hampton Bays Public Library will host an Authors’ Luncheon at Oakland’s Restaurant (373 Dune Road) in Hampton Bays on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 from noon to 4:00 pm. Roger Rosenblatt and Meg Wolitzer will be the guest authors. Most recently Mr. Rosenblatt authored The Book of Love and The Boy Detective while Ms. Wolitzer wrote The Interestings, and a book for young adults, Belzhar. The cost of this event is $50.00 per person. Tickets are on sale now at the library circulation desk through July 6, 2015 and are non-refundable. Books to be signed on the day of the event may be pre-ordered at the time of ticket purchase. Proceeds from this event will help fund future programs at the library to benefit the community. Book Store News: Join us at the Book Store for “Christmas in July” on the 25th! Try our new play-a-ways, perfect for the beach. $5 includes play-a-way book, battery, & earphones. Art on Display Every month the paintings, photography, sculpture and other creative crafts are displayed in the Helen Gould Room located directly off the main foyer, and in the Lower Lobby display cases. We are pleased to present the following exhibitions: July On display this month are the paintings, lithographs and illustrations of local artist Andrew Morris. Andrew is an accomplished fine-artist with over 100 of his original works of art and commissions in numerous private and corporate collections. His colorful paintings, illustrations and lithographs have been featured in many one-man and group shows here on Long Island. An artist’s reception will be held Sunday, July 5 in the Helen Gould Room. August Returning artist Paul Padovano will display paintings of Long Island represented in seascapes, landscapes and still lifes. We welcome inquiries about displaying your work.
